{coyotes} Nugent-Hopkins stars in OT as Oilers edge Coyotes 3-2

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) Not a lot has gone right for the Edmonton Oilers this season, but they caught a couple of breaks on Tuesday night.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored 4:20 into overtime as the Oilers defeated the Arizona Coyotes 3-2 for their second win in a row. The Coyotes had the best chances in overtime, ringing two shots off the crossbar, but a late turnover led to Nugent-Hopkins getting a breakaway and scoring his ninth goal of the season.

''I had to come up with a couple of big saves there and got lucky a couple of times off the post, but those are the bounces that haven't been going our way so it's nice to get a couple of those,'' said Oilers goalie Cam Talbot, who made 29 saves, four in overtime. ''I think we definitely have to build off it, but we can't get too complacent.

''After we string a win or two together we seem to come out in the next game a little flat. We have to build off this and come out strong next game and build off that momentum moving forward.''

Zack Kassian and Matt Benning also scored for the Oilers, who have only won two straight games on one other occasion all season.

''It's nice for our confidence right now,'' Nugent-Hopkins said. ''In each of our last two games we came back from being down a goal. We are showing a lot more fight, a lot more resilience right now. It should go a long way for our team.''

Christian Fischer and Oliver Ekman-Larsson scored for the Coyotes, who have lost three of their last four games.

''Their three goals were just breakdowns,'' Fischer said. ''I think for the most part we probably out-chanced them and limited their top guys. But three-on-three is anybody's game and it all it takes is one bad bounce or a missed shot wide. We got a point and we move on and go to Calgary.''

Fischer showed a great second effort to lift his own rebound over outstretched Oilers goalie Cam Talbot during a scramble in front to give Arizona an early lead. It was the 17th time in 25 games this season that Edmonton has trailed 1-0.

Kassian finally converted on one of many breakaways this season, beating Coyotes goalie Scott Wedgewood for his first goal of the campaign to tie the game 1-1 with 3:30 left in the first.

Arizona regained the lead with 49 seconds left in the second period as Ekman-Larsson's power-play point blast beat Talbot.

Benning's shot hit a defender in front and deflected into the Arizona net to send the game to extra time with 5:35 left in the third period.

The Coyotes had the best chances in overtime, ringing two shots off the crossbar, but a late turnover led to Nugent-Hopkins getting a breakaway and scoring his ninth goal of the season.

Notes: It was the first of four meetings between the teams this season, with the next coming on Jan. 12 in Arizona. . With four wins in their six games before facing Edmonton, the Coyotes had won more in that stretch than in their first 20 games. They had also won three straight on the road. . Although it was just the 10th NHL game of his career, it was the second time Arizona's Dylan Strome had played in a game against older brother Ryan, a forward with the Oilers. . Coyotes defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson suffered an upper-body injury and did not return.

{coyotes} Nov. 27: Howe reaches three milestones

THIS DATE IN HISTORY: Nov. 27

Gordie Howe reaches three major milestones on the same day during a span of nine years.

1960: Howe becomes the first player in NHL history to reach 1,000 points when he assists on Howie Glover's first-period goal in the Detroit Red Wings' 2-0 victory against the Toronto Maple Leafs at Olympia Stadium. Howe's 1,000th point comes in his 938th NHL game.

1965: Howe scores his 600th NHL goal during Detroit's 3-2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens. He is the first player in League history to score 600 goals.

1969: To complete his personal hat trick of milestones on this date, Howe has two assists in a 5-1 victory against the Los Angeles Kings to become the first NHL player with 1,700 points. He gets point No. 1,700 in his 1,567th regular-season game.

MORE MOMENTS

1941: The Boston Bruins tie an NHL record by scoring four goals in the 10-minute overtime period to defeat the Brooklyn Americans 6-2 at Madison Square Garden. Overtime is a mandatory 10-minute period before being discontinued in November 1942. When the NHL reinstitutes it in 1983, the format is changed to a five-minute period, when the first team to score wins the game.

1946: Assistant coach Dit Clapper comes out of retirement to help the Bruins on defense, replacing the injured Jack Crawford. He gets a standing ovation from 14,000 fans at Boston Garden. The inspired Bruins defeat the New York Rangers 5-2.

Dit Clapper

1974: The Canadiens begin an NHL-record 23-game road undefeated streak (14-0-9) with a 3-2 win against the Pittsburgh Penguins at Civic Arena. Jacques Lemaire scores the winning goal at 11:54 of the third period.

1991: The Penguins hold a 10-minute candlelight ceremony in honor of coach Bob Johnson, who died one day earlier, prior to their game against the New Jersey Devils at Civic Arena. Pittsburgh then rolls to an 8-4 victory, giving Scotty Bowman, who has stepped in after Johnson becomes ill, his 750th NHL win.

2007: Mats Sundin becomes the first player to score 400 goals as a member of the Maple Leafs. The milestone comes in a 4-3 shootout loss to Montreal at Air Canada Centre. Sundin's 400th goal comes with 17.6 seconds remaining in the third period. Sundin scores 420 of his 564 NHL goals with Toronto, and he is inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2012.

2015: Dave Tippett gets his 500th win as an NHL coach when the Arizona Coyotes defeat the Calgary Flames 2-1 at Gila River Arena. Oliver Ekman-Larsson's goal with 39.9 seconds left in overtime makes Tippett the 22nd coach in League history with 500 victories.

The 20-year-old Strome, the No. 3 overall pick in 2015, had eight goals and 18 assists in 15 games for Tucson. He had points in his last season games and is second in the AHL with 1.73 points per game.

Strome was scoreless in two games for Arizona this season and has an assist in nine career NHL games.

The 29-year-old Kempe had two goals and two assists in 18 games for the Coyotes this season.

{coyotes} Knights win 5th straight with 2nd-period outburst

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) Tomas Nosek, William Karlsson and Erik Haula scored in a 1:42 span of the second period and the Las Vegas Golden Knights went on to win their fifth straight, 4-2 over the Arizona Coyotes on Saturday night.

Jonathan Marchessault had an empty-net goal right before the buzzer and an earlier pair of assists for the Knights. They improved to 3-0 against Arizona and solidified their spot in first place in the Pacific Division in their inaugural season.

Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Brendan Perlini scored in a third-period Coyotes comeback. Perlini's spectacular goal through traffic and past goalie Malcolm Subban cut the lead to 3-2 with 9:25 remaining.

The Coyotes, who had won four of their previous five, killed a four-minute, double-minor penalty by Jason Demers for high-sticking and had 3:24 left when play returned to five-on-five.

The Knights' first two goals came just 31 seconds apart.

Ekman-Larsson lost control of the puck and Nosek took it away. Nosek skated unchecked down the ice and knocked it past goalie Scott Wedgewood for a short-handed goal to make it 1-0 with at 7:23 of the second period. Seconds later, Las Vegas won the ensuing face-off and William Karlsson's one-timer put the Knights up 2-0 at the 7:54 mark.

Slightly more than a minute passed before the finale of the scoring barrage. Erik Haula knocked in the rebound after Marchessault's shot was blocked by Wedgewood and the Golden Knights led 3-0.

Wedgewood was replaced by Marek Langhamer.

Subban, in his first start in more than a month due to injury, had 23 saves.

The Coyotes appeared to strike first with 10:29 left in the first period when, on an Arizona power play, Jason Demers' slap shot found the back of the net. But the goal was waived off on a call of goaltender interference against Arizona's Derek Stepan, who appeared to bump Subban as the shot approached.

Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet challenged the ruling but the no-goal call was upheld.

NOTES: Knights are 15-6-1 in their inaugural season. ... Both teams were coming off overtime victories the previous night - Las Vegas 5-4 at home over San Jose, Arizona 3-2 at home over the Los Angeles Kings. ... Perlini scored for the fourth straight game. ... Subban appeared in 127 games for AHL's Providence Bruins but this was only his seventh career NHL game. Five have been with Las Vegas this season. ... Knights were 1-5 on power plays, Arizona 0-5, including 1:29 with a two-man advantage.

{coyotes} Fischer scores in overtime, Coyotes beat Kings 3-2

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) Christian Fischer broke out of scoring slump for the resurgent Arizona Coyotes.

Fischer scored on a rebound 2:43 into overtime to give the Arizona Coyotes a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Friday night.

''I've been down on myself the last three of four games because I'm not scoring,'' Fischer said. ''I've had all the chances in the world but couldn't put them home.''

That changed in a flash midway through the overtime period. Christian Dvorak took the initial shot, which goalie Darcy Kuemper seemed to stop with his right pad. But the puck trickled behind him and Fischer, who was trailing the play pounced on it and scored into the vacated net from 3 feet away.

''That's what you're looking for, not guys playing outstanding but a lot of good games,'' said Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet, whose team has won three of four after a 2-15-3 start. ''There were no passengers tonight. It was a team game.''

Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Brendan Perlini also scored for the Coyotes, who won at home for the first second time in 10 games (2-7-1).

Anze Kopitar and Trevor Lewis scored the Kings, who have lost three straight and seven of eight.

Alex Goligoski had a chance to end the game for Arizona one minute into overtime when he took a long outlet pass from Max Domi, but Kuemper stopped his point-blank shot.

''Tonight was a game where you're thinking here we go again,'' Tocchet said. ''But I didn't feel that at all on the bench.''

Ekman-Larsson gave the Coyotes a 1-0 lead midway through the first period, scoring a power-play goal on a long, sweeping shot through traffic from the top of the left circle.

The Kings tied it at 1 nearly three minutes into the second, when Kopitar pushed a pass from Martin Gaborik in the right circle past Wedgewood from just inside the left hash marks. Kopitar's goal was his 10th of the season and first in four games.

''We try to put an emphasis on having a high guy there, have a good cycle and having everyone on the same page and I think we did that quite a bit tonight,'' Gaborik said. ''We couldn't got a lot of opportunity tonight, in those areas were pretty good.''

Perlini made it 2-1 at with 2:10 left in the period, taking Goligoski's shot from the point and redirecting it from the low slot for his third goal in as many games.

Lewis pulled the Kings even at 2-2 with 17:08 remaining. Scott Wedgewood made an initial skate save on a short shot but couldn't control the puck. Andy Andreoff chipped repeatedly at the loose puck, which finally slid untended in the crease behind Wedgewood's right pad before Lewis shoved it the final few inches.

''They got it back in the third period and gave us a chance,'' Kings coach John Stevens said. ''We obviously got a point there but we would like to get two out of the situation.''

NOTES: Lewis has three goals in his past four games. ... Ekman-Larsson has five points in his past four games and 10 in his last 11 against Los Angeles. ... Coyotes C Derek Steppan notched an assist on Ekman-Larsson's goal to extend his point streak to five games. ... Gaborik was making his season debut after missing Los Angeles' first 22 games with a knee injury. ... The Coyotes were without starting goaltender Antti Raanta, who left Tuesday's game with an upper-body injury after colliding with a San Jose player in the crease. Raanta likely will also miss Saturday's home game against Las Vegas. Arizona called up G Marek Langhamer from Tucson of the American Hockey League on Thursday.

{coyotes} 12 breakout stars through first quarter of season

Goalies and a new building, forwards and a new scoreboard, a T-shirt, a new team and two hilarious guys producing some memorable skits. They're all featured in our look at 12 first-quarter breakout stars in the NHL:

Andrei Vasilevskiy, Tampa Bay Lightning

Vasilevskiy, who is 23 years old and in his first full season as Tampa Bay's No. 1 goalie, is an early top candidate for the Vezina Trophy. He is first in the NHL in wins (15), and has a 2.32 goals-against average, a .929 save percentage.

Coach Jon Cooper said Vasilevskiy has been the Lightning's most valuable player, which is saying something because Tampa Bay also has the NHL's top two scorers in Steven Stamkos (36 points) and Nikita Kucherov (33 points).

Vegas Golden Knights

The Golden Knights, the League's 31st team, are riding a seven-game home winning streak a quarter of the way through their inaugural season, allowing them to be firmly entrenched in a Stanley Cup Playoff position and on pace for more than 100 points.

That the Golden Knights are on pace to be the best expansion team in NHL history, better than the 1993-94 Florida Panthers, who had 83 points, is even more startling when you consider they have already used five goalies, the most of any team in the League this season.

What if, as Vegas' social media team questioned on its edgy Twitter account Sunday, this isn't a fluke and the Golden Knights really are just a good team?

The boys from "On the Bench"

Characters Olly Postanin and Jacob Ardown, otherwise known as Steven Campbell and Ryan Russell, a pair of Alberta-born and -raised hockey fanatics, have brought their physical and edgy humor into the hockey's pop culture with their web-based series "On the Bench," where they teach the "fundies" (fundamentals) to star NHL players in various "eppies" (episodes).

Olly and Jacob, donning a mixture of western wear, old-school hockey gear and sweaters, have tried to teach Winnipeg Jets center Mark Scheifele how to "grease the stick" to win a face-off and Buffalo Sabres center Jack Eichel how to work on his "wristy" so he can go "bar down into the top corns."

They played a game of 2-on-2 against Dallas Stars forwards Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn, worked with Golden Knights goalie Marc-Andre Fleury on techniques for clearing the traffic in front of him, and went over various "fundies" with Los Angeles Kings forwards Jeff Carter, Tyler Toffoli and Kyle Clifford.

They get schooled in every video by the NHL players, who show no remorse either for Olly and Jacob's lack of skill.

The videos have become a social media sensation. "On the Bench" has more than 311,000 followers on Instagram, more than 125,000 on Facebook, more than 31,500 on YouTube, more than 23,500 on Twitter and more than 30,000 on Snapchat.

Jaden Schwartz, St. Louis Blues

Ask around about Schwartz, the Blues' 5-foot-10, 190-pound left wing, and you'll hear coaches, players, executives and scouts praise him for his combination of skill, grit and intelligence. But not until this season has he been treated as an elite forward, a potential Hart Trophy candidate.

Schwartz has moved up the ladder, going from a good top-six player to a front-line scorer this season. He has 30 points (11 goals, 19 assists) in 22 games, putting him among the offensive leaders this season in multiple categories.

Schwartz is on pace for moré than 100 points. His previous NHL career-high was 63 points (28 goals, 35 assists) in 75 games in the 2014-15 season.

Prudential Center's scoreboard

It's massive.

That's the guaranteed first reaction you'll have when you see the new scoreboard hanging above center ice (and basically the entire neutral zone) inside Prudential Center, home of the New Jersey Devils. It is the largest in-arena, center-hung scoreboard in the world, according to the Devils.

The scoreboard, designed by Trans-Lux, an LED solutions company, weighs 88,401 pounds, covers 9,584.9 square feet and is nearly four stories tall when measured from the bottom of the barge to the top of the main frame.

The video screens in the scoreboard are equivalent in square footage to 1,300 50-inch televisions. One of the four main screens on the scoreboard is nine times the size of any of the screens on the previous scoreboard that hung above center ice in Prudential Center.

Connor Hellebuyck, Winnipeg Jets

The Jets may finally have their goalie of the present and the future.

Hellebuyck, 24, is playing like a real No. 1 and has essentially run away with a job that was thought to be Steve Mason's to lose going into the season. Mason has struggled (2-3-1, 3.31 goals-against average, .907 save percentage), but Hellebuyck (11-2-2, 2.45 GAA, .925 save percentage) has is among the League leaders in all the major statistical categories for goalies.

Hellebuyck can be a restricted free agent after the season, meaning he's in line for a big payday.

Little Caesars Arena

Oh, how far the Detroit Red Wings have come from Joe Louis Arena. Their new home, Little Caesars Arena, is a modern-day paradise complete with every amenity you could want compared to the building they called home from 1979-2017.

Little Caesars Arena cost $863 million to build. It features two outdoor plazas, four restaurants, seven clubs, a glass-enclosed concourse making you feel like you're on an indoor city street, a 600-foot video screen that wraps the arena, an LED grid ceiling, a 5,100-square foot scoreboard, a 25,000-square foot locker room area for the Red Wings, a players' family lounge, built-in practice facility and historic artifacts from former homes, Olympia Stadium and Joe Louis Arena.

Anthony Mantha, Detroit Red Wings

The Red Wings might as well usher in a new core of potential star players along with their new arena. Mantha looks like he'll be a fixture of the new-era Red Wings.

Mantha has 19 points (10 goals, nine assists) through 22 games. He's been the prototypical power forward the Red Wings need him to be, skilled with great hands and unafraid to go to the net, to throw around his 6-foot-5, 225-pound body and to drop the gloves if necessary.

Arguably his biggest impact has come on the power play. Mantha leads the Red Wings with five power-play goals and seven power-play points. He had 36 points (17 goals, 19 assists), including one power-play goal and three power-play points, in 60 games last season.

Clayton Keller, Arizona Coyotes

Keller has been one of the few bright spots in what has been an otherwise difficult first quarter for the Coyotes. He leads Arizona and all rookies in goals (11). He also leads the Coyotes in points (20) and has been at or near the top of the leaders among rookies in that category all season as well.

The Coyotes were hoping that Keller would make an immediate impact, but few could have predicted his impact would be as significant as it has been. Max Domi, who plays on Arizona's top line with Keller and center Derek Stepan, said Keller reminds him of a younger version of Patrick Kane, who won the Calder Trophy in 2008 with the Chicago Blackhawks.

Mathew Barzal, New York Islanders

In Barzal, a 20-year-old rookie, it appears the Islanders finally have a No. 2 center to play behind captain John Tavares. Now all they have to do is lock up Tavares to keep the 1-2 punch intact for years to come.

Barzal has climbed into the Calder Trophy conversation and into a tie with Keller for second place in rookie scoring by making an impact in almost every game, including his five-assist performance in a 6-4 win against the Colorado Avalanche on Nov. 5.

Islanders coach Doug Weight said Barzal plays like someone who wants to be a star. He's on his way.

Ryan Reaves, Pittsburgh Penguins

Reaves isn't on this list for what he has done on the ice, although he's been the shot of energy and adrenaline the Penguins hoped he would be when they acquired him in a trade from the St. Louis Blues on June 23. Instead, Reaves makes this list for what he has done to teammate Phil Kessel.

It started when Reaves pranked Kessel by donning a frightening mask and scaring the wits out of Kessel on Oct. 27. Reaves posted a video of the scene to his Twitter account (@rreaves75) and told Sportsnet he did the same thing to former Blues teammate Scott Gomez.

Next came the game of one-on-one basketball in the parking lot outside the Penguins' practice facility. Reaves said Kessel challenged him, but didn't stand a chance.

Then, during a segment with Scott Oake on Sportsnet after a game at the Vancouver Canucks on Nov. 4, Reaves wore a T-shirt with a picture of Kessel superimposed over Michael Jackson's from the "Thriller" album cover.

Reaves told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that he has more Kessel-themed T-shirts coming.

Sean Couturier, Philadelphia Flyers

Moving captain Claude Giroux to left wing and putting Couturier between him and Jakub Voracek started as a preseason experiment by Flyers coach Dave Hakstol. It has become a fixture, in part because Couturier's offensive game is finally flourishing in his seventh NHL season.

Known primarily as a shutdown center for most of his first six seasons, Couturier is now an offensive force with 23 points (12 goals, 11 assists) in 22 games, putting him on pace for 86 this season.

Couturier never had more than 39 points in any of his previous seasons. At his current pace, he should have at least 40 by Christmas.
