{coyotes} Vermette retires after 14 NHL seasons

Antoine Vermette, who won the Stanley Cup with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2015, announced his retirement from the NHL on Thursday.

Chicago acquired Vermette in a trade with the Arizona Coyotes on Feb. 28, 2015, and he scored the winning goals in Games 1 and 5 of the Blackhawks' six-game series victory against the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Cup Final.

The 36-year-old had 515 points (228 goals, 287 assists) in 1,046 games during 14 NHL seasons as a forward with the Ottawa Senators, Columbus Blue Jackets, Coyotes, Blackhawks and Anaheim Ducks. He had 28 points (14 goals, 14 assists) in 97 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

Vermette, taken in the second round (No. 55) by the Senators in the 2000 NHL Draft, had 16 points (eight goals, eight assists) in 64 games with the Ducks last season.

"It is with great enthusiasm that I look towards the future and feel a profound joy to finally be able to spend more time with my loved ones, my wife and my kids," Vermette told the NHL Players' Association website.

{coyotes} Jan. 29: Brodeur announces retirement

THIS DATE IN HISTORY: Jan. 29

2015: Martin Brodeur, the winningest goaltender in NHL history, officially announces his retirement.

Brodeur, 42, finishes his NHL career 691-397-49 with 105 ties, a 2.24 goals-against average, .912 save percentage and a League-record 125 shutouts in 1,266 games, all but the last seven with the New Jersey Devils. He holds the NHL's regular-season records for wins, shutouts, games played and minutes played (74,439). He's also first in starts (204) and shutouts (24), and second in victories (113) in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and helps the Devils win championships in 1995, 2000 and 2003.

"If you play hockey, you might as well win," Brodeur says. "The most important record is the wins record that I have."

Brodeur retires after going 3-3-0 with a 2.87 GAA, .899 save percentage and one shutout in seven appearances for the St. Louis Blues. He is inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2018.

MORE MOMENTS

1953: Montreal Canadiens forward Maurice Richard makes NHL history by becoming the first player to score at least 20 goals in each of his first 10 seasons. Richard reaches the milestone with the first of his two goals in Montreal's 5-2 win against the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden.

1985: Center Bryan Trottier becomes the 19th player in NHL history with 1,000 points when he scores two goals to help the New York Islanders rally from down 4-0 for a 4-4 tie with the Minnesota North Stars at Nassau Coliseum. Trottier is the first player to get his 1,000th point by scoring a shorthanded goal.

1998: Luc Robitaille reaches 1,000 NHL points when he has two assists for the Los Angeles Kings in a 5-3 victory against the visiting Calgary Flames. Robitaille is the sixth left wing in League history to reach 1,000 points.

On the same night, Pittsburgh Penguins forward Ron Francis becomes the 11th player in NHL history to reach 1,400 points. He has two assists in a 4-2 road victory against the Boston Bruins. Three years later, Francis, now with the Carolina Hurricanes, is credited with three assists in a 5-2 win against the visiting Tampa Bay Lightning to become the fifth player with 1,600 points.

2004: Steve Yzerman moves past Mario Lemieux into sixth place on the NHL's all-time scoring list. He gets his 1,702nd point with a third-period assist in the Detroit Red Wings' 5-2 victory against the Devils at Joe Louis Arena.

2015: Arizona Coyotes defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson scores a game-tying shorthanded goal against the Toronto Maple Leafs at Air Canada Centre five seconds after the puck drops to start the third period. It's the quickest shorthanded goal from the start of a period in NHL history and sparks the Coyotes to a 3-1 victory.

2017: The Metropolitan Division wins the NHL All-Star Game at Staples Center in Los Angeles by defeating the Pacific Division 4-3 in the championship game of the 3-on-3 tournament. Forward Wayne Simmonds of the Philadelphia Flyers is named MVP after scoring the winning goal midway through the second half, five seconds after the tying goal by Cam Atkinson of the Columbus Blue Jackets.

{coyotes} Coyotes fight through injuries to remain in playoff picture

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- The Arizona Coyotes lost their starting goalie for the season, normally a crushing blow for a team's playoff chances.

The hits literally kept coming.

Their dynamic new player, gone for the year. Their leading scorer, out indefinitely. Six regular players, missing from the lineup at one point. Just when it couldn't seem to get any worse, captain Oliver Ekman-Larsson went down just before the All-Star break.

''I'm expecting the worst; that's just the way we're living right now,'' Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet said while awaiting results on Ekman-Larsson's MRI. ''I'm usually a positive guy, but I'm expecting the worst. It's just weird.''

Thankfully for the Coyotes, the news on Ekman-Larsson didn't go the same route as the other injured players before him. He's only day-to-day.

The best news: Despite all the roster attrition, Arizona is still in the playoff mix.

Relying on leadership from their veteran players, a scrappy group of young players filling bigger roles and superb coaching by Tocchet, the Coyotes will start the second half of the season two points out of the final Western Conference playoff spot after closing the first half 10-2-2.

''The number and types of injuries we've had, it's hard to understand, to believe that they're even real,'' Coyotes GM John Chayka said. ''At some point, adversity hits and you have to decide whether you're going to shy away from it or embrace it. Teams form the character of their coach and guys are looking to Toc to see how he reacts. To his credit, he's embraced the challenge, fought through it and guys have followed his lead.''

Antti Raanta struggled with injuries in his first season as a No. 1 goalie a year ago before playing well down Arizona's strong closing stretch of the 2018-19 season. Raanta kept his roll going early this season, only to have it end after 12 games due to a lower-body injury.

Three of Arizona's four regular centers, Christian Dvorak, Nick Schmaltz and Brad Richardson, went down with injuries. So did Jason Demers, Ekman-Larsson's partner on the top defensive pairing. Defenseman Jakob Chychrun has been limited to 32 games due to lingering knee issues from ACL surgery last year and forward Michael Grabner suffered a gruesome eye injury after taking a stick to the face. Grabner recently started skating again.

The cliche of taking it game by game became a reality in the desert.

''Sometimes I can't tell you who we're playing three days from now,'' Tocchet said. ''My mind is just on that team, our roster, our practice that day and we'll deal with what we deal with the next day. There's always something that comes up the next day and we've just focused on that as a team. Our energy level is better when we do that. I think when we start looking at different scenarios down the road, our focus isn't there, even as a staff. It's helped us taking it day by day. I know it's a cliche, but that's really us.''

Schmaltz dazzled after being traded from Chicago for Dylan Strome and Brendan Perlini, racking up five goals and nine assists in 17 games. He's out for the season after suffering a knee injury. Richardson was Arizona's leading scorer when he went out with a hand injury. He's listed as week to week.

With so many key players out, the Coyotes have been forced to rely on players who have taken on bigger-than-expected roles.

Conor Garland has had an immediate impact, scoring nine goals - one with his face - with three assists in 23 games. Darcy Kuemper has played well since Raanta's injury and Ilya Lyubushkin has been solid on defense.

Veterans like Ekman-Larsson, Richardson, Derek Stepan and Niklas Hjalmarsson have reinforced the coaching staff's message, pushing the younger players to fight through the adversity.

''I had a meeting with those guys last month and told them I'm going to really need you guys to preach what we're saying,'' Tocchet said. ''We have a lot of young guys and they're going to be looking for direction. They're going to get tired of hearing my voice and we really need you guys to step up. They've done a terrific job in being an extension of the coaching staff, made sure the younger players have bought in.''

Tocchet has been the rudder through choppy ice, getting the players to believe and stick to the system, putting himself in the early conversation for the Jack Adams Award as the NHL's best coach.

''His approach is as good as I've seen,'' Chayka said.

The challenge now will be to keep it going.

{coyotes} 2019 SAP NHL All-Star Skills results

Details, rules and results for all six events of the 2019 SAP NHL All-Star Skills™ are listed below:

• Bridgestone NHL Fastest Skater™
• Gatorade NHL Puck Control™
• Ticketmaster NHL Save Streak™
• Enterprise NHL Premier Passer™
• SAP NHL Hardest Shot™
• Honda NHL Accuracy Shooting™

Bridgestone NHL Fastest Skater™

Eight players will compete in the Enterprise NHL Fastest Skater™. Each skater will be timed for one full lap around the rink. The skater may choose the direction of their lap and can be positioned a maximum of three feet behind the start line located on the penalty box side of the center red line. The skater must start on the referee's whistle and the timing clock will start when the skater crosses the start line. In the event of a clock malfunction, the official time will be recorded by the referee's stopwatch. The skater with the fastest time is the winner of the Bridgestone NHL Fastest Skater™, and if there is a tie for the fastest time, the tied players will skate another lap to determine the winner.

Kendall Coyne Schofield, U.S. Women's National Team | 14.346

Miro Heiskanen, Dallas Stars | 13.914

Clayton Keller, Arizona Coyotes | 14.526

Elias Pettersson, Vancouver Canucks | 13.930

Cam Atkinson, Columbus Blue Jackets | 14.152

Jack Eichel, Buffalo Sabres | 13.582

Mathew Barzal, New York Islanders | 13.780

Connor McDavid, Edmonton Oilers | 13.378

Winner: McDavid (13.378)

Gatorade NHL Puck Control™

Eight players will compete in the Gatorade NHL Puck Control™, a timed single-round event that includes three skills: (1) Stickhandling, where a skater controls a puck through a series of ten pucks in a straight line; (2) Cone Control, where a skater controls a puck through a series of eight cones in a zig-zag formation; and (3) Gates, where a skater approaches each gate and is required to shoot or otherwise guide the puck through the lit rung of the gate. Following the gates, time stops when the puck is shot into the game net. Each skill must be completed before moving on to the next skill. The referee's whistles will signal completion of each skill and the player to complete the three skills in the fastest time is deemed the winner of the Gatorade NHL Puck Control™. If there is a tie for the fastest time, the tied players will compete again to determine the winner.

Participants:

Patrick Kane, Chicago Blackhawks (28.611)

Elias Pettersson, Vancouver Canucks (43.622)

Jeff Skinner, Buffalo Sabres (35.407)

Mark Scheifele, Winnipeg Jets (32.161)

Gabriel Landeskog, Colorado Avalanche (33.425)

Claude Giroux, Philadelphia Flyers (30.270)

John Tavares, Toronto Maple Leafs (35.210)

Johnny Gaudreau, Calgary Flames (27.045)

Winner: Gaudreau (27.045)

Ticketmaster NHL Save Streak™

A minimum of four goalies and all 36 skaters will participate in the Ticketmaster NHL Save Streak™, a shootout grouped by division where goalies compete to make the most consecutive saves. Each goalie will face one opposing division and a minimum of nine scoring attempts. Each scoring attempt is officiated in accordance with NHL shootout rules and begins on the referee's whistle. Players from each division will shoot in numerical order, lowest to highest, with the divisional captain shooting ninth. A goalie's round at the Ticketmaster NHL Save Streak™ cannot end with a save - if the divisional captain's shot is saved, the goalie will continue to face shooters until a goal is scored. If the goalie makes a save on the divisional captain's shot, the order of shooters to follow is the same as the original order. The goalie with the longest consecutive save streak during his time in net is the winner of the Ticketmaster NHL Save Streak ™. If at the completion of the event there is a tie for the longest "save streak" the winning goalie will be determined by the total number of saves made in their round. If two or more goalies remain tied based on the total number of saves made then the tied goalies will compete in a sudden death round of "Goalie Goals."

After each player's first attempt, the order of shots for second attempts will be based on the speed recorded in the first round, slowest to fastest. For each attempt, a single puck is positioned on the ice 30 feet from the center of the goal. Starting no further than the nearest blue line, the shooter may skate towards the puck and shoot it from its positioned spot into the goal. Shots must be on goal to be calculated and all shots are recorded by radar in miles per hour. If a puck enters the goal uncalculated due to a malfunction of the radar equipment, the shooter will be allowed an additional attempt. If a player breaks his stick he will be given another attempt. {coyotes} NHL, NHLPA holding 'constructive' CBA talks

Both the NHL and NHL Players' Association sounded optimistic in discussing preliminary talks ahead of the end of the current collective bargaining agreement, with league commissioner Gary Bettman declaring, "We're not looking for a fight."

Bettman and union representative Mathieu Schneider both spoke to reporters before Friday's Skills Challenge during All-Star weekend in San Jose, with each party complimenting the other for starting proactive discussions as the NHL and NHLPA try to avert a fourth lockout since 1994 before the current deal is up in 2022. Both sides have the choice to opt out of the current collective bargaining agreement in September.

"The discussions have been cordial and constructive, even though they're preliminary," Bettman said.

With the league having a streak of work stoppages surrounding negotiations of each of the past three CBAs, all within Bettman's tenure as commissioner, both parties spoke in cautiously optimistic tones about the early talks.

"We've had a couple of meetings and we're exploring the possibility of whether we can bridge gaps early," said NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly. "Earlier the better. We obviously understand the difficulties we've had in the past. I think both parties have acknowledged that. I think the fact that we're sitting down having constructive dialog on open issues at an early date is very positive.

"I can't tell you where it will go. We're, as I said, in the very early stages of that process. But it's been a good process to this point."

With NHL revenues skyrocketing to nearly $5 billion annually as opposed to $400 million when Bettman first held the job in 1993, most of the public questions fall on the players' side and whether or not they will push for a bigger piece economically -- in addition to other issues like whether or not NHL players will return to Olympic action after sitting out the 2018 Games.

"In 2012, you could cut the tension with a knife when you were sitting in those first couple of meetings and in most meetings," said Schneider, the NHLPA's special assistant to the executive director. "We're able to have these discussions now without that tension, without any walls being built up, and it's been very positive so far."

"We're in a place in our relationship where we communicate very well, we have constructive and candid dialog," Bettman said. "The players financially, as the league financially, has never done better. Everybody is going to take a good hard look in terms of what's important and what they may or may not have to have. In a cold sober look at where we are, both the players and the owners are going to have to figure out what's important."

{coyotes} Ekman-Larsson day to day for Coyotes with lower-body injury

Oliver Ekman-Larsson is day to day with a lower-body injury, and the Arizona Coyotes defenseman will be re-evaluated after the 2019 Honda NHL All-Star Weekend.

Ekman-Larsson was injured during the second period of a 3-2 win at the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday and did not play in a 2-1 loss at the Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday.

He is second on the Coyotes with 26 points (six goals, 20 assists) in 49 games.

Arizona has its mandatory five-day break following the 2019 Honda NHL All-Star Weekend and next plays Feb. 2, at the San Jose Sharks at SAP Center.
