{coyotes} Arizona Coyotes Finalize Sale With New Majority Owner Alex Meruelo

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Monday, July 29, 2019

GLENDALE, ARIZONA - The Arizona Coyotes today announced that businessman Alex Meruelo has purchased the controlling interest in the team from Andrew Barroway. The closing of the transaction makes Meruelo, 55, the new Majority Owner, Chairman and Governor of the Coyotes and the only Hispanic controlling owner of a National Hockey League club.

"This is an incredible moment for me and my entire family," said Meruelo. "The Arizona Coyotes team is poised to do great things on and off the ice. I look forward to helping hockey continue to thrive in the desert, and I am committed to providing our passionate fans, loyal partners and the entire State of Arizona with a team they can be proud of for years to come."

Coyotes President & CEO Ahron Cohen called Meruelo's purchase of the team a capstone to what has, thus far, been a momentous off-season. "Mr. Meruelo is a proven winner and his track record of multi-faceted and dynamic business accomplishments makes us well-positioned for continued growth, progress and long-term success here in Arizona. Today marks a major step forward for our organization and our great fans and partners."

The California-based Meruelo Group has roots dating to 1986. Meruelo has built a broad portfolio of businesses in casino gaming, real estate, construction and engineering, hospitality, television and radio stations, food services, and private equity. The son of Cuban immigrants, Meruelo got his start in his father's tuxedo business.

With the transaction, Barroway will retain a minority stake in the team and become an Alternate Governor with the Club. Cohen and John Chayka, President of Hockey Operations and General Manager, will continue as Alternate Governors.

Meruelo thanked Barroway for what he called "invaluable service to the Club."

"Andy deserves credit for stabilizing the franchise and for growing the game of hockey in Arizona," said Meruelo. "I look forward to working with him in the future and want to thank him for his hard work and commitment to the team."

Barroway expressed his excitement for the direction of the franchise moving forward.

"It has been an honor and a privilege serving as the Chairman and Governor of the Coyotes," said Barroway. "I am proud of the work we did to make this organization better, and I am pleased to be passing the torch to someone who will guide this franchise to great days ahead."

{coyotes} Kessel ready to take leadership role with Coyotes

Phil Kessel is ready to embrace the role of leader with the Arizona Coyotes.

"I'm looking forward to it," Kessel told NHL.com on Thursday. "I haven't really got to have that in my career. I think it's going to be great. I'm going to do whatever I can to help these guys win and help them improve. [If] the young guys have questions or anything they want to talk about, I'm there to talk about it. Try to get our team better and them better."

The Coyotes were mostly interested in Kessel's offensive ability when they acquired him in a trade from the Pittsburgh Penguins on June 29 for forward Alex Galchenyuk and defenseman prospect Pierre-Olivier Joseph.

But Kessel, who has won the Stanley Cup twice, played for the United States at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics and 2014 Sochi Olympics, and skated in the NHL All-Star Game three times during his 13 seasons, will be expected to do more than just skate up and down his wing on a team that hasn't qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs since 2012. Arizona was 39-35-8 last season, four points behind the Colorado Avalanche for the second wild card into the playoffs from the Western Conference. Their scoring leader was 20-year-old forward Clayton Keller, who finished with 47 points (14 goals, 33 assists).

"Everyone leads in their own way, and Phil can be a leader in the sense of grabbing young players and talking to them about those situations, what he sees, how he creates offense, how he's done it over a number of years, been one of the most successful guys in the League at doing that," Coyotes general manager John Chayka said Wednesday. "That was a big part of it. We wanted someone that has Phil's mind for the game and can help our young players in that sense."

Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet said he's spoken to Kessel about being part of a veteran leadership group that includes captain Oliver Ekman-Larsson, forwards Derek Stepan and Brad Richardson, and defenseman Jason Demers.

"He's going to accept the role of trying to help young guys, take the young guys out for dinner," said Tocchet, who was an assistant with the Penguins for Kessel's first two seasons. "It's a wider range of leadership for Phil coming here because it's a different dynamic, a different team (than the Penguins). But I still want him to be who he is. I don't want him to come in here with a hammer and say, 'I'm going to lead these guys.' I just need him to be a calming influence. Because I think he's got some good hockey knowledge that can help the young guys."

Kessel, who turns 32 on Oct. 2, the day before Arizona's season opener at the Anaheim Ducks, said he's willing to lead in whatever way is needed.

"I'm not a rah-rah guy, to say the least," he said. "I just want to be a good guy. Guys can relate to me, and I like to have fun. If they want to talk hockey, I like to talk hockey too. But all in all, just enjoy ourselves first and foremost because if you enjoy yourself you can play your best. Be loose and be prepared to play."

Kessel said he's looking forward to having fun in Arizona after a tumultuous end to his time in Pittsburgh. He helped the Penguins win the Cup in 2016 and 2017 but had two points (one goal, one assist) when Pittsburgh was swept by the New York Islanders in the Eastern Conference First Round last season. After the loss, GM Jim Rutherford said he needed to make some changes. Kessel, who has a limited no-trade clause, had vetoed a trade before being sent to Arizona, Rutherford told 93.7 The Fan in Pittsburgh.

"You never know you're going to get traded, (but) you can always sense when your time maybe has come to an end," Kessel said. "I had a great four years there. But I'm really looking forward to the opportunity in Arizona, looking to prove myself again, show people what I've got. You always want to prove yourself and have a good year and have a big year, and hopefully we can do great things."

{coyotes} Soderstrom, Coyotes draft pick, emulating Crosby instead of defenseman

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Victor Soderstrom had his pick of countrymen to look up to as a defenseman growing up in Sweden, including Erik Karlsson, Anton Stralman, Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Victor Hedman, who each plays the position in the NHL and, like Soderstrom, was born there.

But despite wearing No. 77 at Arizona Coyotes development camp in June -- Hedman wears that number for the Tampa Bay Lightning -- the No. 11 pick in the 2019 NHL Draft said the player he watches most closely isn't a defenseman.

It's Pittsburgh Penguins center Sidney Crosby.

"I always had him as my idol, as my favorite player," the 18-year-old said of the three-time Stanley Cup winner who has twice been voted the Hart Trophy winner as NHL MVP. "I just love him as a player, all the qualities he has on the ice and how he has so many assets as a person as well. He's very humble and very social and, yeah, I really like him."

The Coyotes identified Soderstrom as one of the three best players in the draft. They made a trade with the Philadelphia Flyers to move up three spots and select him, and general manager John Chayka said they were determined not to leave the draft without him.

"We had a single goal going in and we didn't want to miss," Chayka said. "We tried to move up as high as we could and we offered a lot to get there (trading the No. 14 and No. 45 picks to Philadelphia), and we left no stone unturned to get our guy."

The Coyotes like how Soderstrom (6-foot, 183 pounds) handled himself against older players while playing for Brynas in the Swedish Hockey League last season, when he had seven points (four goals, three assists) in 44 games.

Arizona scouts have said they saw him execute offensive plays they believe few contemporary players could perform at a similar age, including Rasmus Dahlin, a Sweden-born defenseman who was picked No. 1 by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2018 NHL Draft. They see more offense coming from Soderstrom, a player Chayka described as mature and elite.

Soderstrom moves the puck well in traffic, plays with the instincts of a more experienced player, and has polish and poise.

"I have a real good feel that I can be an impact player in a couple of years," said Soderstrom, who spoke with the Coyotes more than any other team before the draft. "I'm really glad to be here. It feels like it was the best fit for me."

He should feel at home on a team that has Ekman-Larsson as captain and also defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson and forward Carl Soderberg, each born in Sweden (Soderberg was acquired in a trade with the Colorado Avalanche on June 25).

Soderstrom probably won't reach the NHL this season, so Arizona must decide whether he'd be better off going back to Sweden or playing for Tucson of the American Hockey League.

Wherever he plays, Soderstrom understands what he needs do to reach the NHL.

"I think I'm a good skater, I'm smooth, but I need to improve a little bit in my first few strides," he said. "It's a faster game over here, and No. 1, my goal is to get stronger. If you get stronger, everything comes with that."

{coyotes} Kessel trade brings huge jump in season ticket sales for Coyotes: report

Phil Kessel's arrival appears to have energized fans of the Arizona Coyotes.

Season ticket sales at Gila River Arena are up 600 percent compared to the same week last year, including a 550 percent increase in all ticket sales, the Arizona Republic reported Thursday. The Coyotes have also had a 94 percent renewal of season tickets, their highest mark since moving to Glendale, Arizona, in 2003-04.

Kessel, a forward who has scored at least 30 goals in a season six times in the NHL, was acquired in a trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins on June 29.

"It's certainly satisfying and exciting to see us doing something as a franchise that we feel makes us a much more competitive team and puts us in a better position to win," Coyotes president and CEO Ahron Cohen told the paper. "The fact that other people in this market are seeing that, fans are seeing that, and they're jumping on board. It's good, positive momentum for this organization."

The Coyotes (39-35-8) finished four points behind the Colorado Avalanche for the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Western Conference last season. They hope Kessel helps them reach the postseason for the first time since 2011-12, when they advanced to the Western Conference Final. In the trade, Arizona received Kessel, a fourth-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft and minor league defenseman Dane Birks for forward Alex Galchenyuk and defenseman prospect Pierre-Olivier Joseph.

Kessel, who won the Stanley Cup with Pittsburgh in 2016 and 2017, could be the missing offensive piece for the Arizona, which scored 209 goals last season, tied with the Dallas Stars for the third-fewest in the NHL. He had 82 points (27 goals, 55 assists) in 82 games last season and has scored at least 20 goals in 11 straight. The last player to score at least 30 goals for the Coyotes was Radim Vrbata in 2011-12 (35).

Cohen said the rise in ticket sales is proof that fans in Arizona, some of whom have to battle rush-hour traffic during the 10-mile trip from downtown Phoenix, like the direction the Coyotes are headed.

"Some of the challenges that we've experienced in terms of location have been well-documented," Cohen said. "We could be playing in Yuma (Arizona) or in midtown Manhattan, but if we're not doing things to put a successful and competitive team on the ice, then we're going to have limitations on how successful we can be."

{coyotes} Coyotes hope Kessel fills role as goal-scorer

Finding more goals was the offseason plan for the Arizona Coyotes. Enter Phil Kessel.

The Coyotes, who scored 209 goals last season, tied for the third-fewest in the NHL, acquired Kessel in a trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins for forward Alex Galchenyuk and defenseman prospect Pierre-Olivier Joseph on June 29. Arizona also received a fourth-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft and minor league defenseman Dane Birks.

Kessel has scored at least 20 goals in 11 straight seasons, and at least 30 six times in that span. The last player to score at least 30 goals for the Coyotes was Radim Vrbata in 2011-12 (35).

"We felt we needed a lead horse up front, a guy who's produced offensively consistently," Coyotes general manager John Chayka said. "We were looking for a veteran player who has a history of doing it. We have a lot of players who have a lot upside and potential, but we needed a player who could be a 20- or hopefully 30-goal scorer."

Kessel said he likes the players the Coyotes have and is looking forward to making the same kind of impact he did with the Penguins, when he helped them win the Stanley Cup in 2016 and 2017, his first two seasons in Pittsburgh.

He said he's also looking forward to being reunited with coach Rick Tocchet, who was an assistant in Pittsburgh for those two Stanley Cup championships.

"He's a friend of mine," Kessel said. "I think he's a great coach, a good person, and I want to help him succeed and do great things in [Arizona]. I'm looking forward to it and I'm excited that he's going to be my coach."

Video: Chayka on Coyotes being active, Kessel acquisition

The Coyotes also added to their top nine forwards by acquiring Carl Soderberg in a trade with the Colorado Avalanche on June 25. He scored an NHL career-high 23 goals in 82 games last season and could join Derek Stepan and Nick Schmaltz to give the Coyotes depth at center, or play on the wing higher in the lineup.

"He's a horse, so to get a guy like that who's durable, who's productive, who plays hard minutes through the middle of the ice, for us it was an opportunity to make ourselves a better team than we were," Chayka said.

Durability and dependability were two attributes the Coyotes were looking to improve after they lost 380 man-games because of injury last season. Kessel has played every game in each of the past nine seasons (774 straight), and Soderberg has played at least 80 games in four of the past five seasons.

"Durability's an asset, last year taught us that," Chayka said. "Durability and depth. If we'd had more of that last year, we would've been in the playoffs."

Here is what the Coyotes look like today:

Key arrivals

Phil Kessel, F: The 31-year-old should help scoring at 5-on-5 and on the power play. His 24 goals with the man-advantage the past two seasons are tied for ninth in the NHL. ... Carl Soderberg, F: The 33-year-old had 49 points last season, his second-highest total in seven NHL seasons.

Video: Kessel eager to get started after trade to Coyotes

Key departures

Alex Galchenyuk, F: The 25-year-old tied for the Coyotes lead with 19 goals in his only season with Arizona after being traded by the Montreal Canadiens. ... Nick Cousins, F: He had an NHL career-high 27 points (seven goals, 20 assists) last season, but the 25-year-old was not tendered a qualifying offer and became an unrestricted free agent. He signed a one-year contract with the Canadiens on July 5. ... Kevin Connauton, D: The 29-year-old had eight points (one goal, seven assists) and averaged 18:21 of ice time in 50 games. He was part of the trade to the Avalanche for Soderberg. ... Josh Archibald, F: The 26-year-old had an NHL career high in goals (12), assists (10) and points (22) in 68 games but was not tendered a qualifying offer and became an unrestricted free agent. ... Richard Panik, F: The 28-year-old signed a four-year contract with the Washington Capitals on July 1 after he had 33 points (14 goals, 19 assists) in 75 games.

On the cusp

Barrett Hayton, F: Selected with the No. 5 pick in the 2018 NHL Draft, the 19-year-old had 66 points (26 goals, 40 assists) in 39 games with Sault Ste. Marie of the Ontario Hockey League last season and should push for a top-nine spot during training camp. … Nate Schnarr, F: The 20-year-old will push for a top-nine spot after he led Guelph of the OHL with 102 points (34 goals, 68 assists) in 65 games.

What they still need

A No. 1 center. Stepan is a good player, but not the kind of dynamic offensive presence seen on other teams. Could it be Schmaltz? He averaged 2.74 points per 60 minutes in 17 games with the Coyotes before sustaining a season-ending lower-body injury on Dec. 30. The potential of playing a full season with Kessel or Clayton Keller on his line could increase that number.

Fantasy spin

The Coyotes have not had a 75-point player since Ray Whitney in 2011-12 (77) nor an 80-point player since Keith Tkachuk in 1996-97 (86). Kessel, a four-time 80-point scorer with two teams, brings that type of ceiling to the top line with forwards Keller and Schmaltz and first power play with defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson. The Coyotes had numerous fantasy bounce-back candidates, either from injuries or performance trends, prior to the Kessel trade, and now need to be taken even more seriously in mid-to-late rounds. -- Pete Jensen

Projected lineup

Clayton Keller -- Nick Schmaltz -- Phil Kessel

Carl Soderberg -- Derek Stepan -- Lawson Crouse

Michael Grabner -- Brad Richardson -- Vinnie Hinostroza

Barrett Hayton -- Christian Dvorak -- Conor Garland

Oliver Ekman-Larsson -- Jason Demers

Alex Goligoski -- Niklas Hjalmarsson

Jakob Chychrun -- Jordan Oesterle

{coyotes} Soderstrom signs entry-level contract with Coyotes

Victor Soderstrom signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Arizona Coyotes on Sunday.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

The 18-year-old defenseman was selected by Arizona with the No. 11 pick in the 2019 NHL Draft after he had seven points (four goals, three assists) for Brynas IF of the Swedish Hockey League, the most by a player under the age of 18 in the league last season.

"Victor is a highly skilled player and an elite prospect," Coyotes general manager John Chayka said. "We are very pleased to get him signed and look forward to having him come to training camp and compete for a spot on our roster."

Soderstrom (6-foot, 182 pounds) also had one assist in four games to help Sweden win the 2019 IIHF World Under-18 Championship.

"I'm very excited to sign with the Coyotes," Soderstrom said. "It's a dream come true for me and my family. The Coyotes are a first-class organization and I look forward to playing for them in the future."

{coyotes} NHL claims Montador’s brain injuries caused by his ‘own lack of due care and fault’

The National Hockey League alleges in a new court filing that it is not to blame for any of the injuries or health problems suffered by former NHL player Steve Montador, who was posthumously diagnosed with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) after his death in 2015.

Montador was 35 when he died on Feb. 15, 2015. Three months after his death, researchers with the Canadian Sports Concussion Project at Toronto's Krembil Neuroscience Centre disclosed the former defenceman had suffered from CTE.

Montador's family sued the NHL in December 2015, alleging the league has promoted violence and profited off of it while not adequately advising players of the risks of repeated long-term brain injuries.

The Montador family's lawsuit against the NHL was put on hold for four years while the NHL fought a proposed class-action lawsuit filed by more than 100 former NHL players. Now that there is a settlement in that case – which bars nearly 300 former players and their families of pursuing legal action in the future in exchange for a $22,000 (U.S.) per player settlement –Montador's case is moving forward.

In a 26-page document filed June 28 in U.S. district court in Minneapolis, the NHL asked that Montador's case be transferred back to Chicago, where it was initially filed. In a series of 26 stated defences, the league insists it isn't to blame for Montador's death.

Any legal claims related to Montador's injury "may be barred, in whole or in part, from recovery due to his contributory and/or comparative negligence," the NHL alleged.

"Any injury or damage sustained by [Montador] was caused, in whole or in part, by [Montador's] own lack of due care and fault, and/or by pre-existing conditions; and/or the lack of due care of others for whom the NHL has no responsibility or control," the league wrote in its answer to the Montador family's lawsuit.

The NHL also alleged it should not face liability from being sued for promoting violence because "such conduct is protected under the First Amendment to the United States Constitution."

In an interview with the Peterborough Examiner newspaper in 2015, Montador said that he suffered from depression during his NHL career as he struggled to recover from brain injuries.

In their lawsuit against the NHL, Montador's family alleged that he has suffered at least 11 documented concussions in the NHL, including four in 12 weeks in 2012. Montador played 571 NHL games during a 14-year pro career that included stints with the Flames, Panthers, Ducks, Bruins, Sabres and Blackhawks.

Earlier this year, Toronto neurosurgeon Dr. Charles Tator told a government hearing in Ottawa that he examined Montador's records and discovered that he had actually suffered 19 documented concussions.

In an interview on Tuesday, Dr. Tator said that total included brain injuries Montador suffered in junior hockey, the NHL and in his final season as a professional in Zagreb, where he played 11 games for a Croatian-based team in the KHL.

{coyotes} Panik signs four-year contract with Capitals

Richard Panik signed a four-year, $11 million contract with the Washington Capitals on Monday. It has an average annual value of $2.75 million.

The 28-year-old forward had 33 points (14 goals, 19 assists) in 75 games with the Arizona Coyotes last season.

It's a great team and a great organization," Panik said of the Capitals. "They're always in the playoffs and it's a good opportunity for me. Hopefully I will be helping the team doing the best way I can.

"I think I can play everything. It just depends where I'm going to fit. I can play on the third line, fourth line, first line -- it doesn't matter. I just want to be the difference guy and make the team better. We will see where I'm going to end up."

Selected by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the second round (No. 52) of the 2009 NHL Draft, Panik has 159 points (75 goals, 84 assists) in 410 regular-season games with the Lightning, Toronto Maple Leafs, Chicago Blackhawks and Coyotes. He has four assists in 12 Stanley Cup Playoff games with Tampa Bay and Chicago.
