{coyotes} Aug. 30: Poile hired as general manager by Capitals

THIS DATE IN HISTORY: Aug. 30

1982: The Washington Capitals, who have yet to qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs in eight seasons since entering the NHL in 1974, hire 32-year-old David Poile as their general manager.

Poile, who's been an assistant GM with the Calgary Flames, wastes no time making changes; he acquires future Hall of Fame defenseman Rod Langway in a trade with the Montreal Canadiens on Sept. 9. With Langway winning the Norris Trophy in each of his first two seasons in Washington, Poile assembles a team that makes the playoffs in 1983 and every season through 1996.

The Capitals miss the playoffs in 1997 and Poile is fired, though the team he put together rebounds one season later to advance to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time. The Capitals go 594-454 with 132 ties during Poile's 15 seasons and win their first division title (in 1988-89).

Poile isn't out of work for long after being let go by the Capitals; he's quickly hired as the first GM of the expansion Nashville Predators.

MORE MOMENTS

1994: Kirk Muller is named the 20th captain in the history of the Montreal Canadiens. The move comes 11 days after Guy Carbonneau is traded to the St. Louis Blues, ending his five-season run as captain. Muller's tenure is much shorter; he's traded to the New York Islanders on April 5, 1995.

2013: Teemu Selanne signs a one-year contract with the Anaheim Ducks and announces that 2013-14 will be his 21st and last season in the NHL. His announcement comes in a humorous video confirming he'll be back for one more run at another Stanley Cup title. He says he also hopes to play for Finland in his record sixth Winter Olympics in February 2014.

2017: Longtime Arizona Coyotes captain Shane Doan announces his retirement after 21 seasons with the Coyotes/Winnipeg Jets franchise. Doan makes his NHL debut with the Jets in 1995-96, their final season in Winnipeg, then becomes the face of the franchise after the move to Arizona. He's named captain in 2003. Doan retires as the Coyotes/Jets all-time leader in goals (402), assists (570) and points (972). His 1,540 games are tied with Johnny Bucyk for 14th all-time. The Coyotes retire his No. 19 on Feb. 24, 2019.

{coyotes} NHL announces sanctions to Coyotes for violating combine testing policy

NEW YORK -- The National Hockey League has sanctioned the Arizona Coyotes for violating the NHL's Combine Testing Policy during the 2019-20 season, directing the forfeiture of the Club's 2nd-round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft and 1st-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft.

The sanctions were announced by Commissioner Gary Bettman, who convened a hearing on the matter August 6 that included testimony from representatives of the Coyotes and the NHL. At the outset of the hearing, the Club acknowledged that it had violated the Policy by conducting physical testing on 2020 draft-eligible players prior to the Combine.

In reaching his decision, Commissioner Bettman outlined key reasons for the Policy's prohibition on physical testing prior to the Combine: to ensure competitive fairness among Clubs with respect to evaluating and drafting prospects and to avoid subjecting prospects to repeated and duplicative testing procedures.

The sanctions were imposed under Article 6.3 of the NHL Constitution, which authorizes the Commissioner to impose discipline "if he determines . . . that any person . . . has either violated the Constitution, the By-Laws, or any other governing rule or regulation of the League, or has been or is guilty of conduct . . . detrimental to the League or the game of hockey."

Further, Article 6.3 empowers the Commissioner to deprive the offending Club of draft choices "if the conduct in question affects the competitive aspects of the game."

"While the Combine Testing Policy Memoranda reference a fine of "no less than $250,000 for each violation" of the Policy, I exercise my discretion to impose the aforementioned discipline-which I consider to be more appropriate given the specific circumstances of this case," said Commissioner Bettman.

"As for the Club personnel who participated in, or may have contributed to, the Club's violation of the Policy, I have decided that no discipline shall be imposed on these individuals. While I conclude that certain Club personnel acted in a grossly negligent manner at best, which was conceded by the Club, I ultimately conclude that the record does not establish-to a standard with which I am comfortable-that those individuals engaged in intentional wrongdoing, as opposed to grossly negligent behavior."

The NHL will not comment further on this matter.

{coyotes} Aug. 26: Orr signs record contract with Bruins

THIS DATE IN HISTORY: Aug. 26

1971: Bobby Orr becomes the NHL's first million-dollar man when he signs a new contract with the Boston Bruins.

Orr, coming off a record-setting 139-point season in 1970-71, is already the NHL's highest-paid player. But he breaks new ground by signing a contract with the Bruins that will pay him $200,000 for each of the next five seasons, a total of $1 million.

The contract more than pays for itself; Orr helps the Bruins win the Stanley Cup in 1972 and scores at least 101 points in each of the first four seasons before knee injuries limit him to 10 games in 1975-76.

MORE MOMENTS

1961: The Hockey Hall of Fame officially opens its doors at the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto. Canadian Prime Minister John Diefenbaker and United States Ambassador Livingston Merchant preside over the opening. The Hall celebrates by inducting nine new members: Maurice Richard, Syl Apps, Charlie Conacher, Hap Day, George Hainsworth, Joe Hall, Percy LeSueur, Milt Schmidt and Oliver Seibert. The Hall remains at the CNE for nearly 32 years before moving to BCE Place in Toronto in June 1993.

1998: Mike Gartner officially retires from the NHL after 19 seasons, finishing as the fifth-highest goal-scorer in League history with 708. The last 12 goals come with the Phoenix Coyotes, his fifth NHL team, in 1997-98. Gartner begins his NHL career with the Washington Capitals in 1979 and continues with the Minnesota North Stars, New York Rangers, Toronto Maple Leafs and the Coyotes. Though he owns the NHL record for the most 30-goal seasons (17) and is part of two Canada Cup-winning teams, Gartner never wins the Stanley Cup. However, he is inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001 and named to the 100 Greatest NHL Players in 2017.

{coyotes} Bubble fatigue cited as mental challenge during NHL playoffs

The hotels might be posh, their amenities and service first rate, and yet life inside the NHL's two playoff bubbles isn't exactly glamorous.

Having spent nearly a month cooped up at the tunnel-connected hotel-arena complex in Edmonton, Alberta, Rick Bowness acknowledged there's times he's had to coax himself to step outside to bask in the sun and breathe in some fresh, nonfiltered air.

"If people think living in a bubble is great, it's tough. It's mentally tough. And everyone's making the best of it," the Stars interim coach said after Dallas advanced to the second round with Game 6 victory over Calgary last week.

"It's not your typical playoffs. It's not, where, OK, you play, you jump in your car and you go home or whatever. It's none of that. It's play, go back to your room," Bowness said, beginning to laugh. "This isn't as easy as you think it is."

Bowness emphasized he wasn't complaining, but simply noting the challenges that come with the NHL's most unusual playoffs, which haven't yet reached the halfway mark in a bid to award the Stanley Cup by early October — or sooner.

"Listen," he said. "Until you live in this, you have no idea what we're doing, what we're going through."

The potential for NHL bubble fatigue is real.

The close confines, daily COVID-19 testing, lack of freedom to venture beyond the security fences surrounding hotels and arenas in Edmonton and Toronto, and the separation from loved ones can weigh heavily on everyone. Teams have access to outdoor stadiums in both cities, and the NHL has arranged golf outings on off days, in which players are bused to and from the facilities with no access to those outside the bubble.

"It's hard when you're in that type of environment because it's almost like you're in prison," Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman said after Chicago was eliminated by Colorado in five games in the first round.

"When the pandemic hit, you could still leave your house, you could walk outside and get some fresh air," Bowman added. "But here, I think it's the mental toll that you're kind of trapped. You can't go anywhere. And over time, it does start to get to you."

Arizona Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet noted the bubble-related challenges during his team's three-week stay, which ended with back-to-back 7-1 losses to Colorado.

"It's basically monotonous every day. We had 2 1/2 blocks with nothing to really do other than hockey. This is where mental will comes in," Tocchet said. "The teams that go far, obviously you got to have the talent. But you also have to have the strong mental fortitude to get through that for sure."

NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly wrote in an email to The Associated Press that the league is "actively trying to minimize the length" of the playoffs "in part due to the dynamics and constraints of 'bubble life.'"

That was evident Friday, when the NHL scheduled the second round of the playoffs to open before the first round was complete. And with the conference and Cup finals set for Edmonton, the two East finalists will likely have only two days to acclimate to their new surroundings upon traveling from Toronto.

"We will continue to pursue all 'move up' opportunities aggressively as we go forward," Daly wrote.

He added the NHL is still checking with health authorities on whether family members will be allowed to enter the bubble before or during the conference finals.

In noting the bubble challenges, Boston Bruins forward Brad Marchand said players can also use them as motivation.

"We're all sacrificing to be here, so I think the drive is there to want to make it all worth it," Marchand said.

"So when you get on the ice, you want to win, because otherwise this whole thing is for nothing," he said. "It'll be worth it if we win. So it's that fear of losing, I guess, that kind of drains you mentally, and being away from the family."

Teams arrived at their hub cities on July 26, before playing an exhibition game, followed by a two-part preliminary round. The bottom 16 teams competed in a best-of-five elimination series, while each conference's top four teams played a round-robin tournament to determine seeding.

The first round began on Aug 11 and lasted just 11 days.

There were no series sweeps in the first round for just the fourth time since the 2005 lockout, with no series going the maximum seven games — the first time that's happened in the first round since 2001.

Overall, a combined 43 games were played, which matched the second-lowest total since 41 games were needed to complete the first round in 2000.

Though it's unclear what those numbers reflect, Bowness said the notable momentum swings within a series or even a game were "absolutely" the result of life in the bubble.

Columbus and Toronto each rallied from three-goal deficits during their preliminary round series. Dallas did the same in a series-deciding 7-3 win over the Flames.

"The way we're living and playing, that's going to lead to a lot of emotional swings," Bowness said. "Give our guys credit, they battled back."

In a bid to break the monotony, Bowness scheduled a mandatory fun day for the Stars at Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium on Friday.

"We need to get out of the hotel. We need a mental break," he said.

The players repaid Bowness with a 5-3 series-opening win over Colorado a day later. The only drawback was Bowness and his staff couldn't join them because they had to spend Friday at the hotel prepping for the Avalanche.

"It would've been a good day for us to get out with them, but hey, that didn't happen," Bowness said. "And we knew when we came into this bubble, you roll with the punches."

{coyotes} Hall says winning 'what I'm after' approaching free agency with Coyotes

Taylor Hall's top priority is clear as he heads toward becoming an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his 10-season NHL career.

"I think, honestly, it's probably all winning," the Arizona Coyotes forward said Friday when asked what was most important.

Hall has had individual honors -- picked No. 1 in the 2010 NHL Draft by the Edmonton Oilers, being voted the Hart Trophy winner as the NHL most valuable player in 2017-18 with the New Jersey Devils -- but has played 14 NHL postseason games.

The NHL salary cap also was affected after the season was paused March 12 due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus. The cap will stay at $81.5 million for at least next season.

"Any player at this stage in their career that has had the career that I've had, 10 seasons, only make the [Stanley Cup] Playoffs twice, that's really what I'm after," the 28-year-old said. "So we'll see what happens there.

"I think the Coyotes have a bright future. They have some great guys, some good young players. When I get around to crossing that bridge and I kind of come to what I want to do, we'll see.

"But yeah, I'd say it's pretty much all winning. I don't think the money's going to be what it was maybe before COVID or before the season, but that's fine. I think we get paid a lot of money to play a game, and we'll see what happens."

The Coyotes got Hall in a trade from the Devils on Dec. 16, 2019, but the general manager who acquired him, John Chayka, is no longer with Arizona after quitting July 26. He was replaced by Steve Sullivan.

"It kind of clouds it a bit," Hall said. "I think John leaving was unexpected for everyone. I had a good relationship with him. He's the one that traded for me and obviously had a lot of belief in me, and that was important.

"But we'll see. A change happens a lot in hockey, and you have to be ready for that stuff. We'll see what happens. We'll see how the conversations go with whoever's having them."

Hall scored 27 points (10 goals, 17 assists) in 35 games for Arizona in the regular season and six points (two goals, four assists) in nine postseason games. The Coyotes, who qualified for the playoffs for the first time since 2012, defeated the Nashville Predators 3-1 in a best-of-5 series in the Stanley Cup Qualifiers and lost to the Colorado Avalanche 4-1 in a best-of-7 series in the Western Conference First Round.

The Devils were not part of the NHL Return to Play Plan, a 24-team tournament with 12 Western Conference teams in Edmonton and 12 Eastern Conference teams in Toronto.

"I choose to look at it from a positive," Hall said. "I got to play in the playoffs, and not only the playoffs but the play-in round. Obviously, that wouldn't have been possible if I was in New Jersey still. I'm grateful for that opportunity.

"Obviously, getting a chance to spend time in Arizona and to join a new team was really fun. It's a great group of guys, and I thought the coaching staff was awesome to work with. I look at it from a positive.

"Obviously, it would have been nice to have more success against Colorado, but for me personally, I was able to get some experience that I wouldn't have had … and I'm grateful for that."

Hall said he learned a lot during his time with the Coyotes.

"I'd never played in a market like Arizona, like, a hot-weather market, a place that might not be a classic hockey market," he said. "But they care about hockey there. That was surprising to me, the amount of sellouts that we had, and the fan support was awesome. That's something that I wouldn't have known about before coming here.

"And then just the guys. I mean, honestly, the guys in the locker room made me feel so welcome and really was a great team, a team that supports each other, a team that really gets along well off the ice, and those are kind of things that you really don't have any clue about until you get there. Every team says that they're close, but the Coyotes was truly a close team and a team that I had a lot of fun playing for, so we'll see."

Hall said he would take a few days to let things soak in, then speak to his agent. Like everyone else, he doesn't even know the date free agency will begin because it has yet to be determined.

"To be honest, though, when you're set to become a free agent, when it's your first time, you really don't know what to expect," he said. "It's not something that happens every year. I'm trying to look at it from a positive and just enjoy everything that happens, and we'll see what happens with the Coyotes leading up to it and have conversations with everyone I trust and see what their opinions are.

"But yeah, I don't know what to expect. It's a weird offseason for everyone. I'll try to take it in stride and see what happens."
