{coyotes} Dec. 1: NHL debuts in United States

THIS DATE IN HISTORY: Dec. 1

1924: The NHL makes its debut in the United States when the Boston Bruins play their first game, a 2-1 victory against the Montreal Maroons at Boston Arena.

Smokey Harris and Carson Cooper score for Boston after Montreal takes the lead when Chuck Dinsmore beats Hec Fowler midway through the first period.

The opening-night victory is one of the few highlights for the Bruins in their first NHL season; they go 6-24-0 and finish last in the six-team league. But Boston finishes above .500 in its second season and wins the Stanley Cup in 1929.

MORE MOMENTS

1940: "Brotherly love" takes on a whole new meaning when the Chicago Blackhawks defeat the New York Rangers 4-1 at Chicago Stadium. The game features four sets of brothers: New York's Lynn Patrick and Muzz Patrick, and Neil Colville and Mac Colville play against Chicago's brother combinations of Max Bentley and Doug Bentley, and Bob Carse and Bill Carse.

On the same night, the Bruins score seven unanswered goals in the third period to defeat the New York Americans 10-3 at Madison Square Garden. Bill Cowley sets a Bruins record with six points (two goals, four assists). Three of the assists come on goals by Eddie Wiseman.

1960: Gordie Howe has two third-period assists for the Detroit Red Wings in a 3-2 home loss to the Bruins, moving him past the NHL record of 1,091 points (regular season and Stanley Cup Playoffs) set by recently retired Montreal Canadiens star Maurice Richard.

1988: Bernie Nicholls sets team records with six assists and eight points in the Los Angeles Kings' 9-3 victory against the Toronto Maple Leafs at the Forum in Inglewood, California. Nicholls' big night overshadows a five-assist performance by Wayne Gretzky and a hat trick by Dave Taylor

1996: Gretzky becomes the first (and still only) player in NHL history to reach the 3,000-point plateau (including the Stanley Cup Playoffs) when he has a goal and an assist in the Rangers' 6-2 win against the Montreal Canadiens at Madison Square Garden. Gretzky finishes his NHL career with 2,857 regular-season points and 382 in the playoffs.

1997: The Montreal Canadiens become the first team in NHL history to play 5,000 games when they face the Pittsburgh Penguins at Molson Centre (now Bell Centre). The Penguins spoil the festivities by winning 1-0.

2014: Arizona Coyotes rookie Tobias Rieder scores shorthanded goals 58 seconds apart in the second period of a 5-2 victory against the Edmonton Oilers at Rexall Place. Rieder becomes the first rookie in NHL history to score two shorthanded goals in less than one minute. He beats Viktor Fasth on a breakaway 36 seconds into the second period, then scores again at 1:34.

2018: The New York Islanders rally for a 3-2 win against the Columbus Blue Jackets in their first home game at Nassau Coliseum since 2015. The Islanders move to Barclays Center in Brooklyn for the start of the 2015-16 season, but after getting approval for a new arena at Belmont Park that's scheduled to open in 2021-22, they split their 2018-19 schedule between their new and old homes.

2019: Mikko Koivu has a night to remember in the Minnesota Wild's 3-2 shootout win against the Dallas Stars at Xcel Energy Center. Koivu becomes the first player in Wild history to play in 1,000 NHL games (all with Minnesota), gets his 700th assist on a first-period goal by Kevin Fiala, then tops off his night by scoring the deciding goal in the shootout.

{coyotes} Time running short for NHL to start next season Jan. 1

A far cry from the standings at Thanksgiving serving as a barometer of which teams are most likely to make the playoffs, the NHL heads into the U.S. holiday without a firm plan announced for next season.

The league and players are running out of time to start the season Jan. 1 as previously planned, with various pandemic-related problems standing in the way. There is uncertainty on many fronts.

"The landscape is — there's a lot of unknowns associated with where we're going in the immediate future," Boston Bruins general manager Don Sweeney said Monday. "Hopefully things, with all the positive news associated with vaccines and a hopeful climate that could potentially exist that we get back on track. But we have some ground to cover."

Some of the groundwork is already in place. Realignment featuring an all-Canadian division and regional play in the U.S. appears likely and should push the thorny issue of cross-border travel back to the playoffs. The NHL and NHL Players' Association also agreed to a long-term extension of the collective bargaining agreement last summer to get hockey through the pandemic.

But with virus cases surging across North America and the prospect of an even bigger revenue shortfall than owners originally feared, questions have arisen about amending that agreement, which has put the start of the season in peril.

PLAYER SALARIES

Much like Major League Baseball's struggle to start the 2020 season, it's all about the money. The CBA — which now runs through 2026 — ensures a 50/50 split of hockey-related revenue; includes players deferring 10% of their salary for the upcoming season; and puts a cap on how much money will be kept in escrow over the length of the deal.

Less than five months since the CBA agreement, the league has asked players to increase salary deferrals to 20% or 26% and increasing the escrow caps, according to a person with knowledge of the discussions who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because neither side is publicly announcing details of negotiations.

Assuming the season is shorter than a full 82 games, players could balk at taking pro-rated salaries while escrow amounts are increased.

START DATE

The two sides have targeted Jan. 1 to start the season. Some steps need to be taken soon for that to happen.

A training camp of roughly two weeks would need to precede opening night. The later the season starts, the fewer games there might be. There could be as few as 50 or as many as 70-plus games for each team, with the stipulation that the Stanley Cup should probably be awarded before the Summer Olympics open in Tokyo on July 23.

"What starts with me is: Let's get the season started," Nashville general manager David Poile said. "I'm up for however it looks. Whatever the league and the PA think is the best way to get us back playing, whether it's with fans, some fans, no fans, TV being (more) relevant, if you will. Whatever it takes to get this season going and get it in place."

REALIGNMENT

A division made up of the seven teams based in Canada — Montreal,, Toronto, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver — makes the most sense given the border with the U.S. is closed to nonessential travel through Dec. 21 and possibly beyond. Bettman said earlier this month the NHL isn't moving those seven teams south of the border "so we have to look at alternative ways to play."

If there was one Canadian division, three U.S. divisions to cut down on long-distance travel might look like this, though discussions are ongoing and nothing has been finalized:

— A division with Arizona, Los Angeles, Anaheim, San Jose, Vegas, Colorado, Dallas and either Minnesota or St. Louis.

— A division with St. Louis or Minnesota, Chicago, Nashville, Detroit, Columbus, Carolina, Tampa Bay and Florida.

— A division with Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Washington, New Jersey, Boston and all three New York teams.

Playoffs in the same divisions would determine the final four playing for the Stanley Cup.

"Whatever it looks like, to me, I know it'll be well thought out," Poile said. "I just don't know what it's going to look like right now."

VIRUS CONCERNS

Multiple Columbus Blue Jackets and Vegas Golden Knights recently tested positive for the coronavirus. Team facilities are open for voluntary workouts with protocols in place, though those teams had to close off-ice areas.

After the NHL constructed tight bubbles for the postseason amid the summer surge, players testing positive — and how to deal with that like other leagues have — might be a factor early in 2021.

{coyotes} NHL in legal battle with insurers refusing to pay concussion lawsuit costs

The National Hockey League is embroiled in a legal fight with insurance companies that refuse to pay most of the costs related to the league's years-long concussion lawsuit and the settlement the league reached with retired players.

The NHL filed a lawsuit in New York State Supreme Court on July 31 against eight insurance companies: TIG Insurance Co., Federal Insurance Co., Chubb Insurance Co. of Canada, National Union Fire Insurance Co. of Pittsburgh, Vigilant Insurance Co., American Home Assurance Co., Aviva Insurance Co. of Canada, and Zurich Insurance Co.

The NHL in November of 2018 announced an $18.9 million (U.S.) settlement with 318 former players who joined a lawsuit accusing the league of downplaying the long-term dangers of repeated brain trauma. The settlement included plaintiff lawyers' fees and costs, free neuropsychological tests for players, up to $75,000 for medical treatments, cash payouts of roughly $20,000 per player and the establishment of a Common Good Fund to help retired players in need.

The NHL alleges in its lawsuit that it paid for insurance coverage dating back to 1974 and that it has made five demands since settling the concussion litigation to the insurance companies to pay its legal costs related to the case but that the insurance firms have reimbursed the league only for about a quarter of what the NHL says it is owed.

The league said it is seeking "tens of millions of dollars in damages, plus 9 per cent interest, for breach of policies."

"For approximately five years, the NHL vigorously defended the concussion litigation while keeping the insurers fully apprised," the league wrote in its 19-page lawsuit. "Over the course of extremely complex litigation, the NHL paid substantial fees and expenses; reviewed and produced millions of pages of documents; deposed and defended depositions of dozens of fact and expert witnesses; and engaged in significant contested motion practice."

The NHL says it has paid $16,981,600 of the settlement amount and that the insurers have not reimbursed them for that payout.

In a counterclaim lawsuit against the NHL on Oct. 9, Federal Insurance, Chubb and Vigilant wrote that they want the NHL to repay them the funds they already have forwarded to the league. The companies did not specify the amount.

Because the retired players accused the NHL of fraud, not only negligence, for deliberately hiding the dangers of concussions from them, Federal Insurance, Chubb and Vigilant argued that they did not have to cover the league's legal costs or the payments from the settlement.

The insurers also allege that the NHL's settlement covers players who first played in the league in 1951. The league was uninsured for all periods prior to 1974, they allege.

American Home Assurance (AIG) and National Union Fire Insurance allege in their own countersuit, also filed Oct. 9, that they were working with the NHL on a legal defence to the concussion lawsuit before the working relationship collapsed.

"In order to obtain the contractual defence under the AIG policies, the NHL must comply with all conditions of coverage, including the NHL must provide notice of any potentially covered claim, indicate that it wishes for the AIG insurers to provide a defence, and tender control of the defence to the AIG insurers," AIG and National Union Fire wrote.

The NHL advised AIG in December of 2013 that a concussion lawsuit had been filed against the league, but it did not indicate if it wanted AIG to organize its legal defence, AIG and National Union Fire wrote in their countersuit.

The insurers allege that AIG hired the law firm Nixon Peabody in March of 2014 to provide a legal defence. The NHL rejected that move and instead hired the firms Skadden and Proskauer Rose. The NHL later allegedly refused the offer of AIG and National Union Fire to reimburse the NHL for its defence costs at the rate Nixon Peabody had charged.

"Despite repeated requests, the NHL refused for three years to provide any of its defence cost invoices to the AIG insurers," AIG and National Union Fire wrote. "Not until March 2017 that the NHL finally provided AIG with the first tranche of defence invoices that it expected the AIG insurers to cover."

The NHL's legal invoices to AIG allegedly revealed significant unreasonable expenditures, including excessive and unnecessary time billed, the insurers' countersuit says.

"Three NHL firms duplicated significant efforts with no explanations," AIG's lawsuit says. "Rates charged were excessive. Vague entries, unreasonable charges for overhead and other expenses."

{coyotes} Former NHL official alleges league fired him for being whistle-blower on racism

A former National Hockey League off-ice official alleges in a newly filed lawsuit that he was fired for reporting a colleague who for years used racist and sexually charged language while working for the league.

In a lawsuit filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida, lawyers for Laurence Sullivan, a former crew official who recorded in-game statistics during Lightning games in Tampa Bay, wrote that Sullivan should be rehired by the NHL and that he should receive punitive damages for his treatment.

The amount Sullivan is suing for was not specified. The NHL has not filed a statement of defence, and Sullivan's allegations have not been proven in court. An NHL spokesman did not respond to a request for comment. A Lightning spokesman declined to comment.

Sullivan alleged in his wrongful dismissal lawsuit that he was hired by the NHL in August 2013 and fired on Feb. 26, 2020.

During his tenure with the NHL, Sullivan alleged that colleague Pat DeLorenzo Jr. repeatedly used the N-word and other racist language at work.

"DeLorenzo, at work in the booth and with other co-workers around to hear, told [Sullivan] that 'chocolate was his code word for [the N- word]'," Sullivan's lawsuit alleges.

Sullivan alleges that he reported DeLorenzo's behaviour to Ron Brace, the NHL's former crew chief in Tampa. Sullivan alleges Brace failed to take any action for five years. The lawsuit does not specify when Sullivan reported DeLorenzo's behaviour.

"The racial comments were so offensive and so pervasive that [Sullivan] began recording DeLorenzo's racial comments at work," the lawsuit says.

Besides working for the NHL, DeLorenzo also has worked in a Tampa tire and auto shop owned by his family. An employee in that shop told TSN on Thursday that DeLorenzo suffered a stroke a month ago and was not available for comment.

In an interview with TSN on Thursday, Brace denied that he'd ever heard DeLorenzo using racist language.

"I heard jokes with sexual connotations, but nothing racist," Brace said. "None of the NHL's off-ice officials down here in Tampa is a racist."

In December 2019, during the course of investigating the conduct of another NHL employee in Tampa, NHL vice-president of human resources Patrice Distler and Katherine Watson, an NHL lawyer, were put in contact with Sullivan.

Sullivan alleges that he was initially nervous about speaking with Distler and Watson when they reached out to him on Dec. 30, 2019.

"[Sullivan] expressed fear of speaking out against DeLorenzo due to Brace's ongoing protection of him despite previous complaints and, upon information and belief, due to a previous female off-ice official from another city that was terminated by [the NHL] shortly after reporting sexual harassment at work," the lawsuit says.

Sullivan alleges that after Distler and Watson promised him that he would be protected under the NHL's whistle-blower policy, he provided them with six recordings of DeLorenzo's "racially discriminatory behaviour including his use of the [N- word], along with videos of DeLorenzo making other comments such as 'once you go black, you never go back,' asking someone if they wanted 'head,' and saying that others were 'internally retarded.'"

Last December, following several scandals involving abusive behaviour and misconduct, the NHL said it would create a way for whistle-blowers to report inappropriate behaviour to the league. Commissioner Gary Bettman said the league would introduce a hotline for players and team and league personnel to report instances of misconduct.

Brace says the NHL fired him and DeLorenzo on Jan. 2, 2020.

"Patrice called me on the phone, didn't give me a chance to defend myself at all, it was a done deal already," Brace said. "After 28 years working for the NHL, she told me to destroy my NHL jacket and anything else I had that said NHL on it because I would not be permitted to enter the arena wearing anything that suggested that I worked for the league."

Despite the assurances that he would be protected by the NHL, Sullivan alleges that he became, "the target of a proactive, vengeful, campaign to solicit a pre-textual reason to terminate him for reporting the offensive and discriminatory behaviour of DeLorenzo and the protection of that behaviour by Brace."

On Feb. 26, 2020, the NHL terminated Sullivan, "for allegedly being a part of a 2016 group message thread of DeLorenzo's."
Sullivan alleges in the lawsuit that Watson wrote to him and told him to "destroy any and all videos that you have recorded in the workplace."

"[The NHL] did nothing to stop the racially discriminatory comments that were broadcast to its employees and crew every night on its communication system and in the booth shared by the off- ice officials," Sullivan alleges. "Instead, only after being confronted with video evidence of the wrongful behaviour, [the NHL] terminated DeLorenzo and Brace, and then terminated the whistle-blowers, including [Sullivan]. [The NHL] then promoted Gary Reilly, another NHL official that heard – and stayed silent – for all of DeLorenzo's racial slurs."

{coyotes} NHL seeking additional pay deferral from players for 2020-21 season

The NHL is asking players to defer an additional 13 per cent of their 2020-21 pay as part of return-to-play negotiations for the upcoming season, Sportsnet can confirm.

The NHLPA already agreed to a 10 per cent salary deferral in the six-year collective bargaining agreement extension signed in July, ahead of the league's completion of its 2019-20 campaign in Edmonton and Toronto bubbles.

The news was first reported by Larry Brooks of the New York Post.

Per Brooks, it is unclear how the players' union will respond and if the request from the league represents an ultimatum or if it is an initial position in the bargaining between the two parties.

The players' original deferral is set to be repaid in three instalments (without interest) in October of 2022, 2023 and 2024. The CBA extension ruled out the prorating of salaries, as was done in the MLB's pandemic-shortened 2020 season, but says, "The parties also agree to continue discussions regarding the possibility of allowing players and clubs to negotiate additional deferrals on a case-by-case basis."

The NHL has previously said it is targeting a Jan. 1 start to the 2020-21 season, but details remain up in the air.

{coyotes} Three questions facing Arizona Coyotes

1. Where will the scoring come from?

The Coyotes averaged 2.71 goals per game last season, 23rd in the NHL, and forward Conor Garland (22) was their only player who scored more than 18 goals. They'll have to find more offense without forward Taylor Hall, who signed a one-year contract with the Buffalo Sabres on Oct. 11. Hall has averaged 1.05 points per game over the past three seasons.

"I think where we're going to get that number up is by understanding we're going to play our way," center Derek Stepan said. "But at the same time, when we get our opportunities, we need to execute a little bit better with the puck in the offensive zone. When we do get the chance to score, we've got to be sharp and execute and make sure we put it in the back of the net."

2. Can they provide more support in front of goalie Darcy Kuemper?

Kuemper's combined 2.29 goals-against average the past two seasons is second in the NHL behind Ben Bishop of the Dallas Stars (2.23). He faced 334 shots in nine postseason games (37.1 per game), was pulled from Game 4 of the Western Conference First Round after allowing four goals on 22 shots, and gave up six goals on 30 shots in a 7-1 loss to the Colorado Avalanche in Game 5 that ended the Coyotes' first Stanley Cup Playoff appearance since 2012.

"I feel like we do a good job without the puck defending and limiting them to chances from the outside," Stepan said. "In my eyes it's when we do get the puck, what we're doing with it and executing and making sure that we're doing all the right things with the puck, so that we can take some pressure off Darcy."

3. Will at least one of their top young players take the next step?

Jakob Chychrun, a 22-year-old defenseman, Clayton Keller, a 22-year-old right wing, and Christian Dvorak, a 24-year-old center, are part of a core group that has been in the Coyotes system long enough to go from being players with potential to top-flight NHL players. Barrett Hayton, a 20-year-old center chosen with the No. 5 pick in the 2018 NHL Draft, scored 66 points (26 goals, 40 assists) in 39 games for Sault Ste. Marie of the Ontario Hockey League in 2018-19 and could provide an offensive spark.

"Now we have to find that 0.3 to 0.5 more goals a game," Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet said. "Can we find 50 goals somewhere from our lineup to give us a margin of error to win a little bit more? You always look at the Stanley Cup champs, they find those plays at the end. They score on that 2-on-1 or that odd-man rush late in the game, one of those star players puts it in the net. We're looking for that kind of weapon to do that for us."

{coyotes} Arizona Coyotes key statistics

1. Kessel shots

Right wing Phil Kessel had an NHL career-low 153 shots on goal in 70 games for the Arizona Coyotes last season, and his 14 goals were the second fewest in his 14 NHL seasons and 13 fewer than he scored in 2018-19, his final season with the Pittsburgh Penguins. The drop-off in goals can be explained by Kessel taking fewer shots than previous seasons; he averaged 2.98 shots per game in his four seasons with Pittsburgh, but that number fell to 2.19 with Arizona. His shooting percentage decreased from 11.2 percent with the Penguins to 9.2 percent with the Coyotes, who will likely rely on him even more this season after the departure of left wing Taylor Hall, who led Arizona with 2.29 points per 60 minutes of 5-on-5 ice time in 35 games after being acquired in a trade from the New Jersey Devils on Dec. 16, 2019. Hall signed a one-year contract with the Buffalo Sabres on Oct. 11. Kessel averaged 0.20 goals per game last season, but if he can increase his shot volume, he could produce closer to his NHL career average of 0.35 per game.

2. Kuemper's 5-on-5 save percentage

Darcy Kuemper had a .934 even-strength save percentage last season, third in the NHL (minimum 20 games played) behind Anton Khudobin of the Dallas Stars (.945) and Tuukka Rask of the Boston Bruins (.939). Kuemper's success at even strength was even more impressive considering the Coyotes were minus-215 in shot attempts differential (SAT), 24th in the League. Despite below-average puck-possession numbers, they were fourth in 5-on-5 save percentage (92.9 percent), behind the Bruins (93.3 percent), Stars (93.2 percent) and Colorado Avalanche (93.2 percent). Arizona, which finished with a .529 points percentage (33-29-8), has gotten elite goaltending at 5-on-5 and could have a higher points percentage this season if it can add more offense to a lineup that was 23rd in scoring last season (2.71 goals per game).

3. Penalty kill

The Coyotes were fifth in the NHL on the penalty kill last season (82.7 percent) despite the fact that defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson, who led them in average shorthanded ice time (2:40 per game), missed 43 of 70 games because of a lower-body injury. Antti Raanta's .917 save percentage against opponents' power plays was third in the NHL (minimum 30 games played), behind Martin Jones of the San Jose Sharks (.918) and Robin Lehner of the Vegas Golden Knights (.918). Raanta and Kuemper can perhaps be more effective on the penalty kill if Hjalmarsson stays healthy.

{coyotes} Top prospects for Arizona Coyotes

1. Barrett Hayton, F

How acquired: Selected with No. 5 pick in 2018 NHL Draft

2019-20 season: Arizona (NHL): 20 GP, 1-3-4; Tucson (AHL): 5 GP, 1-4-5

Hayton is on loan with Ilves in Liiga, the top pro league in Finland, after the 20-year-old center was cleared to play Oct. 31 following a shoulder injury sustained while playing for Canada at the 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship.

"I'm fortunate to be over here," Hayton told the Coyotes website. "I'll have a lot of momentum coming into camp. I'll be on my game, and personally that's something I can really use to kind of propel myself into the season this year."

Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet said he believes Hayton (6-foot-1, 190 pounds) possesses the traits that could lead to a full-time role in the NHL.

"For him, it starts with his pedigree," Tocchet said. "He's a high-character guy. He's a guy that wants to be great. He'll do whatever it takes. When you have high character and leadership skills that he does, the future's bright in your career. That's the two checkmarks that I see with him, his character and his leadership skills."

Projected NHL arrival: This season

2. Victor Soderstrom, D

How acquired: Selected with No. 11 pick in 2019 NHL Draft

2019-20 season: Brynas (SHL): 35 GP, 5-11-16

The 19-year-old (5-11, 179) could make his North America debut with Tucson of the American Hockey League this season. Soderstrom is expected to play for Sweden in the 2021 World Juniors after he scored six points (one goal, five assists) in seven games in a third-place finish in 2020.

"Very heads-up right defenseman that we definitely need in our organization," Tocchet said. "High skill. Excellent at breakouts, can run a power play. He's got to play reps, whether it's in the minors or with us. He's got to play pro reps, and we've got to get him out in those situations, wherever that is for his development."

Projected NHL arrival: 2021-22 season

3. Kyle Capobianco, D

How acquired: Selected with No. 63 pick in 2015 NHL Draft

2019-20 season: Arizona (NHL): 9 GP, 1-0-1; Tucson (AHL): 42 GP, 10-27-37

Capobianco (6-1, 196) signed a two-year contract Oct. 5 after leading Tucson defensemen in scoring last season. A three-time AHL all-star, the 23-year-old has scored 99 points (19 goals, 80 assists) and is plus-26 in 135 games.

"This is an important year for Kyle," Tocchet said. "We have to know where he's at. Can he make our team, and can he contribute? The mental part of Kyle's game has to get stronger. This offseason of training and getting himself ready is going to be huge."

Projected NHL arrival: This season

4. Jan Jenik, F

How acquired: Selected with No. 65 pick in 2018 NHL Draft

2019-20 season: Hamilton (OHL): 27 GP, 22-34-56

The 20-year-old right wing is expected at Coyotes training camp but is projected for the AHL so he can get more acclimated to the pro game after two seasons in the Ontario Hockey League. Jenik (6-1, 161) played three games for the Czech Republic at the 2020 World Juniors until a knee injury that required surgery ended his season.

Projected NHL arrival: 2021-22

5. Matias MacCelli, F

How acquired: Selected with No. 98 pick in 2019 NHL Draft

2019-20 season: Ilves (Liiga): 43 GP, 13-17-30

MacCelli (5-11, 165) is playing on the same line as Hayton in Finland; it's MacCelli's second season with Ilves after he was named Liiga rookie of the year. The 20-year-old left wing could play for Finland at the 2021 World Juniors after he scored seven points (two goals, three assists) in seven games in the 2020 tournament.

"Getting on the ice with him and being on the same line, it's pretty eye-opening how skilled he is," Hayton said. "We have a similar feel for the game."

Projected NHL arrival: 2021-22
