{coyotes} NHL cutting isolation time to five days, change doesn't apply to Canada

The NHL is following other leagues and the CDC by cutting COVID-19 isolation times to five days under certain conditions and where it is allowed by local laws.

The change went into effect Wednesday and applies only in the U.S. because of stricter pandemic regulations in Canada. The league has 25 teams based in the U.S. and seven in Canada and on Tuesday postponed nine games scheduled for north of the border because of attendance limits imposed by provincial governments.

Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly confirmed the new protocols, which were first reported by Daily Faceoff. They apply for 14 days, at which time league and players' association officials will reconvene to review the situation.

Players, coaches and staff who tested positive for the coronavirus can return after five days if symptoms are gone or resolving themselves with a negative PCR test or two negative rapid test results taken more than two hours apart.

"I think that's a good step," Nashville Predators forward Filip Forsberg said on a video call. "Obviously testing will still be a regular thing, I'm sure, and that's something that we dealt with all last year, so we're used to that. But I think that's the way to do it as long as we can keep everything in the way it's been, which has been pretty safe to me."

The 10-day isolation requirement remains in Canada. The NBA and NFL previously reduced to six and five days, respectively, after the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued new guidance.

Hockey players this week had expressed a desire for shorter isolation times. Daily testing and enhanced protocols, including mask-wearing at team facilities unless on the ice for games or practices, are in effect through at least Jan. 7.

The league has postponed 80 games so far this season, counting the nine in Canada because of crowd restrictions in the provinces of Quebec, Ontario and Manitoba. Another game, scheduled for Jan. 12 between the Canadiens and Bruins, was moved from Montreal to Boston, where fans are permitted.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) Tomas Hertl came out of COVID-19 protocols and delivered twice for the San Jose Sharks in their 8-7 shootout victory over the Arizona Coyotes on Tuesday night.

{coyotes} NHL postpones 14 games; won’t resume play until Tuesday

The NHL pushed back its return from an already extended holiday break an extra day by postponing its entire 14-game Monday schedule for COVID-19 testing reasons.

The league said Friday it now plans to resume play Tuesday in a decision that increases the total of postponed games to 64 this season.

Teams are still scheduled to resume practicing Sunday, but won't be allowed to take the ice until players, coaches and traveling officials are cleared following a round of COVID-19 tests. The decision to delay the resumption of play will allow what the NHL called "an adequate opportunity to analyze league-wide testing results and to assess clubs' readiness to play."

The NHL said it will provide further updates on its return to play plans Sunday.

The move comes after the NHL opened its annual holiday break on Wednesday, two days earlier than scheduled, because of a significant jump in players landing in the league's COVID-19 protocols, and with 10 teams' schedules paused.

The sudden rash of postponed games also led the NHL to exercise its right to withdraw from participating in the Winter Olympics in February. The league will instead use its previously scheduled Olympic break, which runs from Feb. 6-22, to make up its postponed games in order to complete an 82-game season.

Toronto forward William Nylander entered the NHL's COVID-19 protocols Friday, giving the Maple Leafs 13 players on the list. Maple Leafs captain John Tavares, defenseman Morgan Rielly and goaltender Jack Campbell also are in the protocols along with coach Sheldon Keefe, two assistants and four other members of the organization.

{coyotes} NHL Confirms Players Will Skip Beijing Olympics Over Covid Concerns, Anticipating 2026 Return To Games

The National Hockey League has confirmed its players will not take part in the Beijing Olympics in February, but the league expects a return to the Games in 2026.

Covid concerns have mounted significantly in recent weeks, and multiple media reports suggested on Tuesday that the NHL would likely pull the plug. The angst level has been heightened by worries about the "Covid zero" strategy employed by Chinese officials in their fight against the virus. That means a player who tests positive during the already two-week-plus trip would have to self-isolate and quarantine for two weeks, potentially turning an Olympics trip into more than a month-long proposition.

The league has already had to postpone 50 games and has even played some in front of no fans amid rising infection rates and the now-dominant Omicron variant. It opted to pause its season early for Christmas in an effort to regroup. Instead of taking part in the Olympic tournament from February 6 to 22, the NHL now plans to fill that period with rescheduled games, hoping to keep its season on track.

"The National Hockey League respects and admires the desire of NHL players to represent their countries and participate in a 'best on best' tournament. Accordingly, we have waited as long as possible to make this decision while exploring every available option to enable our players to participate in the 2022 Winter Olympic Games," NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said. "Unfortunately, given the profound disruption to the NHL's regular-season schedule caused by recent Covid-related events … Olympic participation is no longer feasible."

Despite "everyone's best efforts," he continued, "current circumstances have made it impossible for us to proceed. … We look forward to Olympic participation in 2026."

Cleared by Olympics organizers to play since 1988, the NHL sent players to the Games from 1998 to 2014, opting out in other years because the event posed too great of an interruption to its regular season. For NBA players, who have competed in the Summer Olympics since 1992, the dynamics are different because the tournament coincides with their off-season. While many basketball stars have passed on playing in the Olympics, a professional presence has nevertheless remained fairly constant over the past three decades.

National Hockey League Players' Association Executive Director Don Fehr said in a statement that players had been looking forward "with great anticipation" to the 2022 Games. "Until very recently, we seemed to be on a clear path to go to Beijing," he added. "Covid-19 has unfortunately intervened, forcing dozens of games to be postponed this month alone. No matter how much we wish it were not the case, we need to utilize the Olympic period to reschedule these games."

He acknowledged that both players and fans "are quite disappointed" by the move. But being able to complete a full 82-game season remains the priority.

{coyotes} Reports: Coyotes can stay in arena after meeting bill deadline

The Arizona Coyotes have met a deadline for paying bills and will avoid being locked out of their arena, according to multiple reports.

After the Coyotes said all their bills were paid earlier this month, Gila River Arena's management company sent a letter to the team saying it still owed more than $2.706 million for rent and other expenses.

The City of Glendale announced recently that it will not renew its agreement with the franchise beyond the 2021-22 season.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman called out Glendale at the league's board of governors meeting earlier this month.

"It's clear that the City of Glendale has either an agenda or an edge in the way they're dealing with the Coyotes," Bettman said. "I think there was miscommunication. All of the outstanding obligations have been brought current."

The Coyotes have played at Gila River Arena since moving from America West Arena, which they shared with the NBA's Phoenix Suns, in downtown Phoenix in 2003.

In September, the Coyotes proposed a $1.7 billion development in Tempe, a city just east of Phoenix, that included a hockey arena, restaurants, shops and apartments on a 46-acre tract of land near the city's downtown.

The team said the arena would be funded by private investors, but would seek city sales tax revenues to help pay for $200 million in additional costs, including infrastructure work.

The city of Tempe said the evaluation process would take several months and will include extensive examinations, with opportunities for community feedback.

{coyotes} Keller scores twice, Coyotes beat Ducks in OT to snap skid

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Clayton Keller had two goals and an assist, including a wrist shot 2:09 into overtime, giving the Arizona Coyotes a 3-2 win over the Anaheim Ducks on Friday night.

Anaheim's Trevor Zegras had a chance to win it, but had his shot go off the post. Arizona quickly went down the ice and converted as Keller's shot snapped a six-game losing streak.

Travis Boyd also had two goals and an assist, and Phil Kessel and Clayton Keller each had a goal and an assist. Christian Fischer also scored for the Coyotes. Scott Wedgewood made 32 saves.

Hampus Lindholm had two goals and an assist for Anaheim, which had won four of its last five coming into the game. Zegras had a goal and an assist, and Kevin Shattenkirk and Derek Grant also scored.

John Gibson, who had missed two games due to a lower-body injury, stopped 21 shots.

Lindholm's goals give him 57 for his career and moves him into third in Anaheim history for most goals by a defenseman. Cam Fowler is the franchise leader with 76, with Scott Niedermayer second with 60.

Arizona took a 1-0 lead less than three minutes into the game on Boyd's seventh goal of the season, before the Ducks scored three times in a 2:54 span to go up 3-1 at 8:41 of the first.

Shattenkirk started the Anaheim flurry with a power-play goal on a one-timer from the left faceoff circle at 5:47. Lindholm followed 57 seconds later on a snap shot from the right circle, and Grant added to the lead two minutes later on a tip-in.

Fischer brought the Coyotes within a goal at 15:12 of the first on the power play with a tip-in, and Kellar tied it at 3-all with 34 seconds remaining in the second on a breakaway for his eighth goal of the season.

Zegras put the Ducks on top 4-3 at 2:07 of the third with a one-timer. The Coyotes took the lead on goals by Ladd and Kessel that were 66 seconds apart, before Lindholm sent it into overtime on a wrist shot while on the power play.

PHYSICAL FIRST

It was a chippy start to the game with two fights during the first period. Anaheim's Nicolas Deslauriers and Arizona's Liam O'Brien got in a fracas at the 2:30 mark.

The Ducks' Sam Carrick then tangled with Johan Larsson 10 minutes later. Carrick also received a roughing penalty, which led to Fischer's goal.

{coyotes} Kakko scores twice, Rangers rally late to beat Coyotes 3-2

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) Kaapo Kakko had two goals, including the game-winner with 2:18 left, and the New York Rangers scored twice on the power play in the final six minutes to beat the Arizona Coyotes 3-2 on Wednesday night.

Mika Zibanejad added a goal and an assist for the Rangers, who had dropped two straight and three of four. Chris Kreider had three assists - matching a career high - after entering the game with four all season.

''Just one of those nights you have to battle,'' Zibanejad said. ''It might not be the prettiest, but it's two points, and that's the important thing. The power play came up big.''

Kakko tapped the tiebreaker into an open side off a pass from Kreider after Zibanejad scored with help from Kreider's screen at 14:14 of the third period to tie it 2-all. Kakko's winner came after the Coyotes were penalized for having too many men on the ice.

''Great pass by Krides and a big goal for us,'' Kakko said. ''Sometimes it's easy. Just go to the net and they can find me.''

Clayton Keller had a goal and an assist, and Loui Eriksson scored short-handed for the struggling Coyotes, who have lost six in a row.

Coming off a 4-2 loss Tuesday night in Colorado, the Rangers played most of the game without leading scorer Artemi Panarin, who logged only seven minutes and was not on the ice in the third period. Kakko was on the top power-play unit for the game-winning goal because Panarin was out.

Rangers coach Gerard Gallant said Panarin is day-to-day with a lower-body injury.

''You have to dig down and find a way,'' Gallant said. ''He's obviously one of our best players if not our best player.

''It was a tough night. Our guys looked tired on the bench. They were dragging their feet a little bit. Fortunately our power play did a great job later in the hockey game. We found some extra energy.''

Keith Kinkaid made 29 saves in his first start of the season for the Rangers.

''He was strong,'' Gallant said. ''He looked solid. For a guy who hadn't played in two or three weeks (since being recalled from the minors), I was happy with his performance.''

Scott Wedgewood stopped 27 shots for the Coyotes in a game that ended with a scrum in front of the New York net.

Arizona had the best scoring chances in the first period before Eriksson's short-handed goal late made it 1-0. He skated in after a pass from Keller and his wrister from the left side got through Kinkaid's pads and trickled over the goal line at 17:46.

Eriksson was inches short of a similar goal five minutes into the period, when his shot from the right circle got through Kinkaid but was swept away at the goal line by the Rangers. A replay review confirmed the puck did not cross the line.

Kinkaid turned away Barrett Hayton on a breakaway with five minutes left in the period, and the teams traded penalties a minute apart before Eriksson scored.

Kakko ended a 10-game goal drought and tied it at 1 midway through the second when he tipped a rebound into an open side after Wedgewood stopped Zibanejad's shot from the right circle but could not control it.

Keller gave the Coyotes a 2-1 lead at 8:47 of the third period.

''It's tough right now,'' coach Andre Tourigny said. ''Tomorrow the sun will come up, but for tonight we're not in the best place mentally.

''The Rangers are a good team. We had more scoring chances. More quality scoring chances. More shots from the slot. We did a lot of good things. We fought. It's frustrating, because 5-on-5 we were really good.''

ICE CHIPS

Eriksson has 251 career goals and 599 points. He is two assists short of becoming the eighth NHL player from Sweden with 1,000 games, 250 goals, 350 assists and 600 points. . The Coyotes announced a partnership with Univision Arizona to broadcast 14 regular-season home games on Spanish language radio station KHOV-FM beginning with the Dec. 23 game against Tampa Bay. . Coyotes D Jakob Chychrun (lower body) was placed on injured reserve after missing his second straight game. D Janis Moser was recalled from Tucson of the American Hockey League. Moser was the fifth Arizona player to make his NHL debut this season. G Karel Vejmelka, D Dysin Mayo, D Cam Dineen and F Ben McCartney are the others. . Coyotes F Christian Fischer sustained an upper-body injury in the first period and did not return.

{coyotes} Van Riemsdyk scores 2, Flyers deal Arizona 5th straight loss

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) James van Riemsdyk scored two goals and Patrick Brown scored his first goal of the season, leading the Philadelphia Flyers to a 5-3 victory over the Arizona Coyotes on Saturday night.

Scott Laughton and Claude Giroux also scored, and Travis Konecny had two assists for the Flyers, who scored twice in a 73-second span of the second period to break a 2-all tie.

Martin Jones had 29 saves for the Flyers, who won their second straight after breaking a 10-game winless streak with a 4-3 victory in Las Vegas on Friday. The Flyers are 7-3-1 against the Western Conference.

''Obviously the confidence isn't at a high when you lose 10 in a row,'' said Laughton, whose Flyers completed a stretch of five games in seven days.

''To go into Vegas and to play a back-to-back here, legs aren't probably the best, but you have to play a smart game and guys did that tonight.''

Brown made it 3-2 at 11:21 of the second, intercepting a cross-ice pass by Coyotes goaltender Karel Vejmelka and scoring into an open net.

Vejmelka had come out of his net to play a long pass near the right circle, but did no get much on his pass.

''The way he worked to get up the ice,'' interim coach Mike Yeo said of Brown. ''Obviously, that's getting a bounce, But I like to think if you do the right things, you get bounces. He's a guy, one of many, who is giving us everything he has right now.''

Van Riemsdyk tipped in a shot from the right side by Konecny on a power play 73 seconds later for a 4-2 lead, the Flyers' third goal of the period.

Van Riemsdyk has three goals in the last two games.

'''Reemer' is always working, always doing the right things,'' Konecny said. ''He's just a natural goal scorer.''

Giroux made it 5-2 midway through the third period.

Jay Beagle, Nick Schmaltz and Lawson Crouse scored for the Coyotes, who have lost five in a row and seven of eight. Defenseman Cam Dineen had two assists as the Coyotes played without injured defensemen Jacob Chychrun.

''I just wanted to play simple, do my job,'' Dineen said.

Vejemlka had 29 saves for the Coyotes, also playing the second of a back-to-back.

Van Riemsdyk scored his first goal 74 seconds into the game when he stole the puck from Kyle Capobianco at center ice and skated in unchallenged. Beagle answered with his first of the season 39 seconds later on a power play to tie it at 1-all.

Laughton scored five minutes into the second period for a 2-1 lead, before Schmaltz tied it at 10:38 with his first.

The tie did not last long. Vejmelka came out of his net into the right circle to play a long pass, but his weak cross-ice pass was intercepted b Brown for an easy goal and the Flyers scored the next two goals for a 5-2 lead.

''The last couple of games, the structure has been a lot better, and when you do that you are in a position to make plays,'' Jones said. ''And also in better position defensively as well. Good couple games to build off of.''

NOTES

Coyotes D Jakob Chychrun (upper body) and F Ryan Dzingel (lower body) were scratched after suffering injuries in a 3-1 loss to Florida on Friday . Laughton's goal, his sixth of the season, came in his 400th career game, all with the Flyers. ...Flyers D Keith Yandle (948) and Coyotes F Phil Kessel (927) are 2-3 in NHL history in consecutive games played. Doug Jarvis (964) leads the way. . Coyotes F Loui Eriksson had an assist Saturday and is two assists shy of 350 for his career and two points shy of 600 career points. If he hits those marks, he would be the eighth NHL player from Sweden with 250 goals, 350 assists, 600 points and 1,000 games. . Shayne Gostisbehere played this first seven seasons with the Flyers, scoring 60 goals and 219 points. He leads the Coyotes with 13 assists in his first season.

You could also subscribe to FreeBird Aviation Database, a  search under Victorville will yield all the aircraft stored there, this is updated on a regular basis, however aircraft may have left or been chopped, although that would not been the case with your query. Currently VH-OQA, VH-OQD to OQL and ANZ B777 ZK-OKC/F/H/P/R and S are stored at VCV. The subscription is yearly at £40, a real bargain, cheaper than a pint of beer a month!

Hope this helps

However PlaneMad Tours have visited the storage sites as I write, believe they are back today or tomorrow. I understand they will put up a detailed report on the their web page, which is under Oxford Aviation Group, so you will get your answers.

Chris

{coyotes} Hornqvist, Bennett go back-to-back, Panthers top Coyotes 3-1

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) Patric Hornqvist and Sam Bennett scored 10 seconds apart in the first period, and Sam Reinhard scored in his fourth straight game to give the Florida Panthers a 3-1 win over the Arizona Coyotes on Friday night.

The Panthers scored all three goals in the first period and Sergei Bobrovsky had 22 saves, giving up only a power-play goal. He is 9-2-1 in 12 career appearances against Arizona.

''He's lights out,'' Bennett said of Bobrovsky. ''I could say that every night. He gives us confidence. He gives us energy. He's playing unbelievable right now.''

Phil Kessel scored on a power play for Arizona, which has lost four in a row and six of seven. The Coyotes pulled Scott Wedgewood, who had 20 saves, with 3:15 remaining.

''I liked how we closed the game out,'' Florida interim coach Andrew Brunette said. ''Probably wasn't as sharp as we'd like to be, but I really like the way we stayed composed five-on-six. The third period was our best period.''

Florida has 21 goals in its last five games and has won five of its last six. The Panthers have earned point in 22 of 26 games this season and lead the NHL with 40 points, one more than Minnesota. Their four losses are the fewest in the league.

''You look at our depth,'' Bennett said. ''Every night everyone is contributing. Sometimes lines are going to have off nights, but we have other lines that are going to step up and carry the load.''

Hornqvist scored the first goal of the game on a wrist shot from the right circle that hit the crossbar and bounced in at 9:05 of the first period, and Bennett scored 10 seconds later when he took a pass after the faceoff and beat Wedgewood with a wrister from the slot.

The Panthers improved to 4-3-4 on the road.

''A little bit of an onus coming into this trip was being a little better on the road,'' Burnette said. ''We've played OK. We've played well enough to get some points, but I think there's another level for our road play that we need to find.''

Kessel made it 2-1, getting the Coyotes' first goal on the power play in 18 chances (since Nov. 16). But Reinhart scored on a power play with 25 seconds left in the first period with a shot through a screen from the slot for a 3-1 lead.

''We played probably against the best team in the NHL tonight, and after the third goal they didn't generate a lot,'' Coyotes coach Andre Tourigny said. ''We played really well defensively and we had our chances. Unfortunately it's not enough, but there's a positive in that game.''

NO ISSUES

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said the Coyotes' future in Arizona is secure and said there is ''no issue'' with the team while speaking at the NHL Board of Governors meetings Friday.

The city of Glendale has told the Coyotes it will not renew their lease beyond this season. The club paid Glendale $1.3 million this week in back taxes and bills caused by what they called an oversight.

''(Coyotes owner) Alex (Meruelo) is committed,'' Bettman said. ''Alex has the resources, and the Coyotes aren't going anywhere. Well, they're going somewhere else other than Glendale, but they're not leaving the greater Phoenix area.''

Meruelo is working to secure a new arena in Tempe.

ICE CHIPS

Florida center Aleksander Barkov and left wing Anthony Duclair were late scratches. ''They didn't feel great today,'' Florida interim head coach Andrew Brunette said. ''We'll see where they're at tomorrow and go from there.'' Barkov 10 goals and 18 points. Duclair has nine goals and 17 points. . The Coyotes had been 2 of 25 on the power play at home before Kessel's first-period goal. It was the worst home conversion rate in the league. . Coyotes center Jay Beagle returned after missing six games with a lower body injury. . The NHL record for the shortest span between goals by the same team is two seconds, by Montreal in 2018.

{coyotes} Coyotes future in Arizona secure, Commissioner Bettman says

MANALAPAN, Fla. -- The future of the Arizona Coyotes in the Phoenix market is secure, and the goal is to continue to work toward securing a new arena in the city of Tempe, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said Friday.

"There's no issue with the Arizona Coyotes," Commissioner Bettman said at the NHL Board of Governors meeting at the Eau Palm Beach.

Commissioner Bettman was commenting on recent reports stating the Coyotes owed $1.3 million in unpaid taxes and bills to the city of Glendale, where they play at Gila River Arena. He said all Coyotes outstanding debts have been paid and they were a result of a "miscommunication."

The city of Glendale has told the Coyotes it will not extend their lease agreement to play at the arena beyond this season, possibly leaving them without a home venue for next season.

"It's clear that the city of Glendale has either an agenda or an edge in the way they're dealing with the Coyotes," Commissioner Bettman said. "I know that [Coyotes owner] Alex Meruelo is committed to Arizona and is working on a plan for a new arena, which is probably what is agitating the city of Glendale.

"The new arena would be in a place where I think everybody would find it much more accessible and would improve the short-term and long-term fortunes of the club. It'll take a couple years to build, and the fact that the city of Glendale wouldn't want the club to remain in their building on an interim basis speaks volumes about the way they're approaching this. But we can deal with all that.

"Alex is committed. Alex has the resources, and the Coyotes aren't going anywhere. Well, they're going somewhere else other than Glendale, but they're not leaving the greater Phoenix area."

The Coyotes have submitted a request for a proposal to Tempe to build an arena and entertainment district on 46 acres. The plan, if approved, is for the proposed arena to be ready for the 2025-26 season.

The Coyotes are simultaneously working on options for a short-term home in an existing venue in the Phoenix market.

"My advice has been, let's focus on the plan for the building that's going to come, and there are plenty of options to deal on an interim basis," Commissioner Bettman said. "I don't want to get into them now and start having comparative speculative stories. We'll deal with it. I am not concerned. There are options that will work."

{coyotes} Report: Coyotes' arena operator says team still owes rent money

The Arizona Coyotes' arena operator says the NHL team still owes money for rent, Craig Morgan of PHNX Sports reports. The Coyotes said earlier Thursday that all bills and taxes owing to the City of Glendale and the state of Arizona were paid, one day after it was reported they might be locked out of their building if they didn't pay up.

Morgan writes that ASM Global, which operates Gila River Arena, received a cheque that brings the Coyotes current on game-day expenses, but not on rent.

ASM Global, Morgan reports, will send a letter to the Coyotes with a schedule for timing of future payments.

Morgan writes the Coyotes dropped off another cheque that makes the team current on payments for the prior season.

The Coyotes declined comment when asked about Morgan's report by Sportsnet.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, speaking at the league's board of governors meeting in Florida, declined to go into detail about the Coyotes' situation when asked.

"There's no problem, but we'll deal with that tomorrow," Bettman said.

The Athletic's Katie Strang had reported on Wednesday that the City of Glendale was owed about $250,000 in unpaid city taxes for use of Gila River Arena, home of the Coyotes.

Further, Strang reported the Arizona Department of Revenue filed a tax lien notice against the company that owns the Coyotes for more than $1.3 million earlier this month.

According to Strang, if the debt hadn't been settled by Dec. 20, the City of Glendale had told arena managers to deny team employees access to the arena.

In a statement late Wednesday, the Coyotes blamed an "unfortunate human error" for the unpaid bills and pledged to settle the accounts Thursday.

The Coyotes had been leasing Gila River Arena on an annual basis since the Glendale City Council voted to opt-out of a multimillion-dollar long-term deal in 2016. Glendale announced recently that it will not renew its agreement with the franchise beyond the 2021-22 season.

Last week, the Coyotes issued a statement denying a report which said the team was up for sale and could be relocated to Houston.

{coyotes} Coyotes pay overdue bills to avoid arena eviction

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — The Arizona Coyotes are all caught up on their bills. No eviction necessary.

The hockey team in the desert paid off its overdue taxes and other bills Thursday, a day after receiving word the city of Glendale was going to lock the Coyotes out of Gila River Arena if all outstanding debts to the city and the management company for the arena are not paid.

Glendale city manager Kevin Phelps sent a letter Wednesday informing the Coyotes they owed $1.3 million in taxes, including $250,000 to the city.

Phelps informed the Coyotes that the Arizona Department of Revenue had filed a notice of tax lien for unpaid state and city taxes owed by IceArizona, the Coyotes' ownership company. Phelps also said in his letter that he had instructed ASM Global, which manages Gila River Arena, to not allow the Coyotes in the arena if the bills were not paid by 5 p.m. on Dec. 20.

The Coyotes issued a statement late Wednesday saying the unpaid bills were an unfortunate human error and they would rectify the situation quickly. They did on Thursday, avoiding what would have been an awkward turn in the franchise's long journey to find a permanent home.

When the Coyotes first moved from Winnipeg in 1996, the team shared America West Arena with the NBA's Phoenix Suns in downtown Phoenix. The team moved to Gila River Arena in 2003, but faced near-constant relocation rumors as ownership changed hands.

Former owner Jerry Moyes took the Coyotes into bankruptcy in 2009 and Canadian billionaire Jim Balsillie put in a bid to purchase the team with the intention of moving it to Hamilton, Ontario. The NHL, wanting to keep the team in Arizona, put in a counter bid and a Phoenix judge ruled the team could not be sold to Balsillie to circumvent the NHL's relocation rules.

The NHL ran the Coyotes for four seasons and the financial constraints associated with that took a toll, leading in part to a seven-year playoff drought.

A new ownership group brought new hope in 2013, but turmoil surfaced again in 2015, when the city of Glendale voted to terminate a 15-year, $225 million lease agreement with the Coyotes for Gila River Arena.

Plans for a new shared arena with Arizona State University fell through in 2017 and the franchise's future in the Phoenix area continued to remain in doubt.

Andrew Barroway gave the Coyotes a bit more financial flexibility when he bought a majority stake in the team in 2017, but he sold the team to current owner Alex Meruelo, who has said he plans to keep the franchise the Phoenix area.

The Coyotes have been leasing Gila River Arena on an annual basis, but Glendale has announced it will not renew its agreement with the franchise beyond the 2021-22 season.

The team has submitted a bid for a tract of land in the suburb of Tempe in what could be its first step to finally landing a permanent home.

{coyotes} Coyotes blame ‘human error,’ vow to pay all bills to avoid arena lockout

The Arizona Coyotes say they will make sure all unpaid bills are dealt with on Thursday after Katie Strang of The Athletic reported on Wednesday that the team could be locked out of its arena later this month because of financial issues.

"We have already launched an investigation to determine how this could have happened and initial indications are that it appears to be the result of an unfortunate human error," the Coyotes said in a statement released early Thursday morning. "Regardless, we deeply regret the inconvenience this has caused. We will make sure that by (Wednesday) morning, the Arizona Coyotes are current on all of our bills and owe no state or local taxes whatsoever. And we will take immediate steps to ensure that nothing like this can ever possibly happen again." Strang reports the City of Glendale is owed about $250,000 in unpaid city taxes for use of Gila River Arena.

Strang writes the Arizona Department of Revenue filed a tax lien notice against the company that owns the Coyotes for more than $1.3 million earlier this month.

According to Strang, if the debt is not settled by Dec. 20, the City of Glendale has told the arena managers to deny team employees access to the arena.

Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, reporting from the NHL's Board of Governors meeting in Florida, said there has been concern about the Coyotes' ability to pay future bills.

"I've been told there's two separate issues here," he said. "The first is that particular ($1.3 million) bill. But also there is a concern about what happens if the Coyotes pay that bill, will they guarantee that future tax monies that are owed until the end of the season? That they are concerned about the possibilities that the Coyotes pay this bill then don't pay in the future and they have to chase them again. So I think there is a possibility the Coyotes could be asked to pay this and future money before they are allowed to go back into the building."

The Coyotes' first game following the deadline is on Dec. 23 against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The NHL did not immediately respond for comment.

The Coyotes had been leasing Gila River Arena on an annual basis since the Glendale City Council voted to opt out of a multimillion-dollar long-term deal in 2016. Glendale announced recently that it will not renew its agreement with the franchise beyond the 2021-22 season.

Last week, the Coyotes issued a statement denying a report which said the team was up for sale and could be relocated to Houston.

"This is false," the statement read. "Totally false. We're not selling. We're not moving. The Coyotes are 100 per cent committed to playing in Arizona."

A legal analyst for Forbes, Eric Macramalla, had reported that the team was for sale with the intention of an eventual relocation to Houston, citing an anonymous banking source.

According to ESPN, the Coyotes are 30th in the 32-team league in average attendance this year at 12,205 fans per game. In a list released Wednesday, Forbes valued the Coyotes as the least valuable NHL franchise at an estimated $400-million.
