{coyotes} Hats off: Donskoi scores 3 in 1st, Avs beat Coyotes 9-3

DENVER (AP) Joonas Donskoi scored three times during Colorado's five-goal first period, and the Avalanche beat the Arizona Coyotes 9-3 on Wednesday night in front of home fans for the first time this season.

The team invited frontline and health-care workers, first responders, players' families and employees into Ball Arena. The last time the Avs played in front of a home crowd was on March 11, 2020 - just before the league halted the season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

To celebrate Donskoi's accomplishment, fans tossed hats onto the ice - just like old times.

Donskoi secured his second career hat trick over a 3:27 span. It was the second-fastest three-goal spurt by a Colorado/Quebec player in team history. Alain Cote had a hat trick in 2:17 on April 1, 1982, while with the Nordiques.

Andre Burakovsky and Pierre-Edouard Bellemare also scored in a wild first period that included Arizona goals by Michael Bunting and Oliver Ekman-Larsson.

Gabriel Landeskog finished with two goals, Mikko Rantanen added another and Burakovsky scored his second with 3:11 remaining on an assist by Donskoi.

In all, 14 different Avalanche players had at least a point.

Conor Garland also scored for Arizona, which had won three in a row.

Philipp Grubauer stopped 28 shots for his league-leading 22nd win.

The Avalanche improved to 12-2-3 in March, setting a franchise record for wins in a month. It also was their 12th straight game with at least a point.

Arizona goaltender Adin Hill was pulled 6:04 into the game after allowing four goals on 10 shots. He was replaced by Ivan Prosvetov, who allowed five goals.

Things got chippy between Nathan MacKinnon and Garland late in the third. After a tussle, MacKinnon took Garland's helmet and tossed it at him.

Donskoi revved up the crowd by scoring his third goal just 7:31 into the game. About the only thing that slowed him was losing his left skate blade in the second period. He quickly went into the dressing room to get it fixed.

On Friday, ticketed fans will be welcome.

''Nice to get fans back in the building and get the energy up,'' Colorado forward J.T. Compher said. ''They make the game more fun.''

NEWHOOK SIGNED

Colorado signed forward Alex Newhook, the 16th overall pick in 2019, to a three-year, entry-level deal. The team assigned him to the Colorado Eagles of the American Hockey League.

RANTANEN'S MONTH

Rantanen finished March with 13 goals. It was the second-most in Avalanche history behind Joe Sakic, who had 15 in March 2000.

SCORING SPREE

At one point in the first period, the Avs (five) and Coyotes (one) combined for six goals over 3:27, which was the fifth-fastest between two teams in NHL history, according to the league.

LONG TRIP

The Coyotes began a nine-game trip. Their next home game is April 17.

That's a lot of clothes to pack.

''Nine dress shirts, just in case I spill a couple of coffees on it,'' Arizona coach Rick Tocchet said.

There will be some team activities, too - protocol safe, of course.

''We've got to get our minds off hockey,'' Tocchet said. ''That last road trip, we were really isolated and I just felt there were just parts of that trip when guys were really tense.''

{coyotes} Kessel hat trick lifts Coyotes past Sharks 4-0

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) Phil Kessel scored three goals for his seventh career hat trick and Adin Hill made 33 saves to lead the Arizona Coyotes to their third straight victory, 4-0 over the San Jose Sharks on Saturday night.

Clayton Keller had a goal and two assists for the Coyotes, who tied St. Louis for fourth place in the West Division with 37 points.

Kessel took over the team lead with 14 goals, including five in his last three games. Keller's assist put him one point ahead of Conor Garland with 37.

Hill only had to make 20 saves in Friday's 5-2 win, but he was tested by the Sharks in the first period, stopping 17 shots. The Coyotes only had 14 in the first two periods.

Keller opened the scoring with an unassisted goal 5:49 into the game, beating Devan Dubnyk to the stick side.

Kessel scored on a power play in the second period, scored on a rebound in front of the net with 5:57 left. and added an empty-net goal with 2:32 remaining to seal the win - and the hat trick.

Hill's shutout was the second of his career. Dubnyk faced 27 shots for San Jose

Gabriel was called for a 5-minute major for interference, plus a game misconduct, with 12:58 to play after taking down Arizona's Johan Larsson behind the play.

The Coyotes trimmed the shots advantage during the major, but couldn't get one past Dubnyk despite seven shots on goal. It was extended for nearly two minutes when Radim Simek was called for delay of game at 11:56.

DURABILITY

Patrick Marleau played in his 1,756th career game Saturday night, tying Mark Messier for second place in NHL history. Marleau, in his 23rd NHL season, is 11 games behind Gordie Howe for the top spot.

Marleau has played in 887 consecutive games, a streak that dates to 2009. Kessel, who reached 1,100 career games on Friday, has played in 878 straight games through Saturday. Both veterans scored goals in Friday night's game.

FINED

The NHL fined Arizona center Nick Schmaltz $500 for a hit in Friday's game.

Schmaltz was penalized for boarding against Radim Simek in the third period in that game. Simek left the ice and did not play again Friday but returned to action Saturday night.

STREAKS

Kessel's goal, his team-leading 12th of the season, extended his point streak to five games.

SORRY, COACH

Keller's goal was his 65th as a member of the Coyotes, passing coach Rick Tocchet for 13th in team history.

{coyotes} Dvorak scores twice, Coyotes beat Sharks 5-2

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) Christian Dvorak scored twice to lift the Arizona Coyotes over the San Jose Sharks 5-2 on Friday night.

Nick Schmaltz, Dryden Hunt and Phil Kessel also scored for Arizona, and Adin Hill stopped 20 shots. The win moved the Coyotes within two points of St. Louis for fourth place in the West Division.

''Every line contributed tonight,'' Arizona coach Rick Tocchet said. ''Schmaltz really had a good game. Hunt had a lot of energy. He was very disruptive, and I'm glad he got that goal.''

Tomas Hertl and Patrick Marleau scored for San Jose. Marleau's goal was the 564th of his career, tying him with Mats Sundin and Joe Nieuwendyk for 23rd in league history. Martin Jones stopped 23 shots,

The teams meet again Saturday night in Glendale.

With injuries taking out the Coyotes' top two goaltenders and other key contributors, and playing late in the game without defenseman Jakob Chychrun, Tocchet was pleased to see everyone come to play.

''When you have people banged up, you look for guys to step their game up,'' Tocchet said. ''We need that if we're going to get in this thing, the playoff race.''

Dvorak took over the team lead in goals with 11. He opened the scoring 6:20 into the game off a pass from Conor Garland - part of a period when the Coyotes outshot the Sharks 12-4.

Hertl's short-handed goal tied it 1:54 into the second period. He went in alone on Hill just after Garland hit the post on Arizona's power play, with San Jose's Mario Ferraro in the penalty box for holding.

Schmaltz redirected Ilya Lyubushkin's shot from the point to beat Jones with 1:16 remaining in the second period to put the Coyotes ahead 2-1. Dvorak made it 3-1 with an unassisted goal 7:48 into the third.

Kessel celebrated his 1,100th career game with a power-play goal midway through the third. San Jose was assessed a bench minor for delay of game when the Sharks appealed for goaltender interference on Hunt's goal.

Marleau's power-play goal, with Schmaltz off for boarding, came with 7:30 to play.

CONGRATULATIONS

Kessel became the 201st player to reach 1,100 career games. Well ahead of him on the list is Marleau, who can tie Mark Messier on Saturday for second place in most NHL games played with 1,756. That would put him within 11 of all-time leader Gordie Howe.

INJURY REPORT

Arizona placed its third player on injured reserve this week Thursday when center Tyler Pitlick went down with an undisclosed injury.

Pitlick, who last played Tuesday against Colorado, joins defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson and goalie Antti Raanta, who last played Monday. Arizona was already without its No. 1 goalie, Darcy Kuemper, who was injured last week.

The Sharks' Logan Couture, who left San Jose's game against Los Angeles on Wednesday night with an upper-body injury, started at center on Friday. Couture entered Friday tied with Evander Kane for the Sharks' lead with 14 goals and has played in all 32 Sharks games this season.

{coyotes} Coyotes rally, then win shootout to stop Avs' winning streak

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) Phil Kessel and Lawson Crouse rallied Arizona with goals in the third period, Christian Dvorak got the shootout clincher and the Coyotes beat Colorado 5-4 Tuesday night, ending the Avalanche's seven-game winning streak.

Nick Schmaltz and Conor Garland also scored for the Coyotes in the shootout. Joonas Donskoi scored for the Avalanche, but Nathan McKinnon missed wide right against Adin Hill, who stopped 35 shots as Arizona rallied from a 4-2 deficit.

The Coyotes killed off a penalty on Schmaltz in the extra period, with Hill making two outstanding saves during the power play.

Defensemen Jakob Chychrun and Alex Goligoski also scored for Arizona, while Gabriel Landeskog, Mikko Rantanen, MacKinnon and Valeri Nichuskin scored for Colorado. Jonas Johansson stopped 28 shots for the Avs, who beat Arizona 5-1 on Monday night.

The Coyotes were up 2-0 before the Avalanche had a shot on goal. Chychrun scored his ninth goal of the season 1:25 into the game, beating Johansson from the left point. Goligoski scored his first of the season on a feed from Kessel at 4:52.

The high-flying Avalanche began to shift the momentum and scored on the power play at 14:47. Landeskog scored his 10th of the season on a scrum in front of the net with Chychrun off for tripping.

Rantanen tied it with 1:11 left in the first on a backhand feed from behind the net from McKinnon. Despite the slow start, the Avs had an 11-8 edge in shots on goal for the period.

Colorado took its first lead with 10.4 seconds left in the second period when McKinnon's shot through Landeskog's screen beat Hill.

Nichuskin scored the Avalanche's fourth straight goal, redirecting Ryan Graves' shot from the point, at 5:28. But just 1:10 later, Crouse put home a rebound to make it a one-goal game again.

The Coyotes tied it with 11:19 to play when Kessel, after being stopped in front of the net by Johansson, knocked in a rebound.

McKinnon and Rantanen have scored in six straight games and Landeskog extended his scoring streak to five.

{coyotes} NHL Draft Lottery changes announced for 2021

The 2021 NHL Draft Lottery will be reduced from three drawings to two as part of changes announced Tuesday.

The changes, approved by the NHL Board of Governors, will determine the order of the NHL Draft for the teams that do not qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Two other changes will begin with the 2022 NHL Draft Lottery:

-- Teams will be restricted from moving up more than 10 spots if it wins one of the lottery draws.

-- Teams cannot win the lottery more than twice in a five-year period. Wins in the lottery prior to 2022 will not be counted toward this total.

The NHL said the changes will reduce the likelihood of the worst-finishing team dropping in the draft order and not retaining the right to the No. 1 pick; reduce the magnitude of any possible drop in draft order for the worst-finishing team; limit the number of teams eligible to win the No. 1 pick (based on final regular-season standings); and limit the number of times the same team can benefit from winning a lottery drawing.

The 2021 NHL Draft is scheduled for July 23-24.

Since 2016, the draft lottery has used three drawings with any team that did not qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs having a chance to win one of the top three picks.

The reduction to two drawings ensures that the team that finishes last in the NHL standings would pick no lower than No. 3. Under the current system, the team that finished last in the NHL standings could drop to No. 4, which occurred in 2017 (Colorado Avalanche), 2019 (Ottawa Senators) and 2020 (Detroit Red Wings).

The restriction on teams moving up more than 10 places in the first round means the bottom 11 teams in the standings are eligible to win the No. 1 pick. The bottom 12 teams would then be eligible for the No. 2 pick if one of them doesn't win the first drawing.

The 15 teams that fail to qualify for the 2021 Stanley Cup Playoffs, and the expansion Seattle Kraken, who begin play in the 2021-22 NHL season, will be involved in the 2021 lottery. The 2022 NHL Draft Lottery will include the 16 teams that miss the playoffs next season.

{coyotes} Avalanche win 7th straight, rout Coyotes 5-1

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) Mikko Rantanen scored his 18th goal of the season and the Colorado Avalanche won their seventh game in a row by beating the Arizona Coyotes 5-1 on Monday night.

Philipp Grubauer, playing in his 200th NHL game, stopped 31 shots for Colorado. In net throughout the winning streak, Grubauer set a career high with his 19th victory of the season.

Joonas Donskoi scored two late goals, including an empty-netter. Pierre-Eduoard Bellemare and Nazem Kadri also scored for the Avalanche.

Coyotes captain Oliver Ekman-Larsson scored late in the third period, his first goal of the season.

Bellemare opened the scoring for Colorado, taking a feed in front from Matt Calvert behind the net to beat goalie Antii Raanta high at 14:22 of the first period.

Just 68 seconds later, Rantanen scored from the left side for a two-goal lead. Nathan MacKinnon and Gabriel Landeskog assisted. Rantanen leads all NHL players with 10 goals in March.

Kadri scored his 10th of the season midway through the second period - dominated by Colorado - to make it 3-0.

The Avalanche outshot the Coyotes 21-9 in the period and only some strong work by Raanta kept Arizona within range.

Arizona finally got on the board with Ekman-Larsson's power-play goal with 3:41 left.

Coyotes defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson exited after two periods with an upper-body injury.

{coyotes} Daly: NHL still not expecting to have full arenas this season

We've seen in recent months various NHL teams be allowed to host spectators in a limited capacity as COVID-19 restrictions ease in some North American jurisdictions.

For example, MSG Sports announced Monday it'll be easier for fans to attend New York Rangers home games starting April 1 with a press release stating "fans can utilize antigen testing or provide proof of full vaccination to gain entry to Madison Square Garden."

Does this mean the NHL could see full arenas at any point during the shortened 2020-21 campaign?

"With vaccinations coming online and coming online rapidly, obviously we're going to have to evaluate what that means. What that means vis-à-vis players, what that means vis-à-vis fans and the like," NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said Monday during an appearance on Hockey Central. "We are updating our spectator capacity guidelines. Currently it does not take into account necessarily vaccination, but I think most of the significant changes that you'll see in terms of where we are this year won't really be effectuated or implemented until next season."

As of Monday, 12 of the NHL's 31 teams had hosted limited fans at games this season with more teams expected to begin allowing spectators this month.

"There no doubt will be further changes as we go forward this year but we're past the halfway mark," Daly added. "We move into a situation where we start playoffs in early May – hopefully, knock on wood. I'm not sure you're going to see huge changes this year in terms of what you've seen to this point other than I think that things will continue to improve, get better, environments get better, but I don't think (this season) we'll be back to where we were pre-pandemic."

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Derick Brassard completed a hat trick early in the second period and the Arizona Coyotes beat the Anaheim Ducks 5-1 on Saturday night to end a five-game losing streak.

Jakob Chychrun had a goal and an assist, and Clayton Keller scored for the second straight game. Antti Raanta made 27 saves, allowing only Adam Henrique's late goal.

''We've had our struggles during those two weeks,'' Brassard said. ''We're trying to find a solution, we're trying to improve our game. We have to just to build our game now.''

Ryan Miller was pulled after allowing three goals on 14 shots in the first period for the Ducks. Anthony Stolarz made 12 saves in relief. Anaheim has lost five of six, with the victory coming in overtime Thursday night against Arizona.

''That's the one problem with the back-to-backs is a lot of times they do end up split, but that's no excuse for us. We have to start games better. It's as simple as that,'' Ducks coach Dallas Eakins said.

Brassard completed his first regular-season hat trick with a slap shot from the left dot 36 seconds into the second period to put Arizona up 4-0. Brassard came into the night having played the second-most games by an active player without a hat trick, trailing only Red Wings center Valtteri Filppula at 1,038 games, but Brassard erased that distinction in his 883rd contest.

''Yeah, it's a special night but you're trying to help the team win any way you can. I was just at the right place at the right time tonight,'' said Brassard, who also had a three-goal game in the 2015 playoffs for the New York Rangers.

Coyotes coach Rick Rick Tocchet shuffled three of his lines and two defensive pairings in hopes of creating a spark, but it was the groups that stayed intact that gave them a lead 2:53 into the game when Brassard redirected Chychrun's shot past Miller.

Chychrun made it 2-0 at 5:35 on a shot from the point, continuing his breakout season as he ranks fourth among defenseman with eight goals. It was Chychrun's fifth multipoint game.

Brassard completed the strong opening period by tipping Oliver Ekman-Larsson's pass to the slot in for the 3-0 lead at 15:22. The power-play goal to end an 0-for-18 drought was Arizona's first in six games.

''I think it was just everyone just being ready to play, and we got to take a page of that first period and try to bring it on home,'' Brassard said.

Phil Kessel had the secondary assist to reach 500 in his career.

Keller extended the lead to 5-0 at 12:17 of the third period, but Henrique scored at 14:27 to deny Raanta his 14th career shutout.

''Teams adjust,'' said Henrique, who scored for the third straight game. ''It seemed they were a little more aggressive today than they were the other night, and then maybe we weren't as aggressive or didn't work enough certainly in our system the way we did last game. It took us too long to get back in there.''

GOOD COMPANY

Chychrun picked up his 100th career point with the assist on the opening goal, the second-youngest Coyotes defenseman to reach the century mark behind only Ekman-Larsson. Chychrun is the fourth defenseman from the 2016 draft class to reach 100 points, joining Tampa Bay's Mikhail Sergachev, Boston's Charlie McAvoy and Colorado's Samuel Girard.

NOT AT HOME

The Ducks have yet to win consecutive home games this season. Anaheim has allowed at least four goals and been held to one goal or fewer in six of its past 15 home games.

{coyotes} Henrique's power-play goal in OT leads Ducks past Coyotes

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Adam Henrique scored a power-play goal 43 seconds into overtime, Jamie Drysdale had a goal and an assist in his NHL debut and the Anaheim Ducks rallied from an early two-goal deficit and beat the Arizona Coyotes 3-2 on Thursday night.

Trevor Zegras scored his first career goal, Ryan Miller made 23 saves and the Ducks ended a four-game losing streak.

Henrique scored on a sharp-angle one-timer on a pass from from Kevin Shattenkirk to complete the comeback for Anaheim, which trailed 2-0 midway through the first period.

Conor Garland and Clayton Keller scored for the Coyotes, who dropped their fifth straight game. Adin Hill made 28 saves.

Zegras used an impressive bit of skill for his first goal, faking a shot to the near post as he charged in on net and got Hill to commit before pulling the puck back to his right and flicking it in at the edge of the crease to tie it at 2-all at 14:30 of the second period.

With the arrival of Drysdale, the sixth overall pick in the 2020 draft, representing another step in Anaheim's rebuild, it was that youth movement that powered the Ducks' offense. Drysdale's shot from the point deflected off a Coyote player and got the Ducks within 2-1 at 12:01. He picked up the secondary assist on Zegras' goal.

Drysdale is the third NHL defenseman younger than 19 with multiple points in his debut, joining Ray Bourque and Petr Svoboda.

The Coyotes scored twice in the first period, matching their offensive production during the previous four games. Garland put Arizona ahead 1:13 into the game, burying Nick Schmaltz's pass for his ninth goal. Keller made it 2-0 at 7:07, sneaking a wrist shot from the left circle in at the short side off Garland's feed.

The Coyotes and Ducks will play again in Anaheim on Saturday.

UP THE RANKS

Miller won his 390th game, passing Dominik Hasek to take sole possession of 14th place in NHL history.

MR. 700

Ryan Getzlaf had the secondary assist on Drysdale's goal to reach 700 in his career. Already the franchise leader in assists, he is the 55th player in NHL history with 700. The next big milestone awaiting Getzlaf is becoming the Ducks' all-time leader in points. He is 12 away from passing Teemu Selanne's 988.
