{coyotes} Pesce’s late power-play goal keeps Hurricanes undefeated

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) Defenseman Brett Pesce scored a power-play goal with 2:27 left in regulation Sunday to keep the Carolina Hurricanes undefeated with a 2-1 victory over the winless Arizona Coyotes.

The Hurricanes are the last standing unbeaten team in the NHL at 8-0-0, extending the best start to a season in franchise history. Carolina's winning streak is also tied for the fourth-longest to begin a season in NHL history.

''We're going to have to grind,'' Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour said. ''It could have easily been a really frustrating game.''

Martin Necas scored the Hurricanes' other goal and set up Pesce's game-winner. Frederik Andersen stopped 22 shots for his seventh win.

''We're oozing confidence. We believe that we can win every game we're in,'' Pesce said. ''The biggest thing for us was just sticking to our game plan. I thought it was a gutsy win for us.''

Pesce's first goal of the season allowed him to become the 14th different Carolina player with at least one goal.

Rookie Karel Vejmelka made 37 saves for the Coyotes, who are 0-8-1. Christian Fischer had the team's lone goal.

''They deserve more,'' Arizona coach Andre Tourigny said of his players. ''They really earned the right to get a point at least.''

It was the first game in NHL history between an undefeated team having played seven or more games against a winless team with at least seven games, according to NHL Stats.

Necas scored five seconds after a faceoff on Carolina's 26th shot of the game to pull even with 3:03 left in the second period.

''Of course you want to get on the board,'' Necas said. ''But at the end of the day, I haven't scored my first seven games, but we were still winning.''

Fischer opened the scoring with a first-period goal for his second tally of the season.

''I saw an opening, take it to the net,'' Fischer said. ''We're struggling to score right now. We know what we have to do. It's on us. We just have to find a way.''

It was the third time in Carolina's four-game homestand that the opponent scored first.

''The key was not giving up another one,'' Brind'Amour said. ''If they had got that second one, those are the games that you're getting a bunch of chances and that would have been tough to come back from.''

While it's Andersen's first season with Carolina, Sunday was his 400th NHL game. He holds a 233-100-48 record.

TAKE A LOOK

The Hurricanes had their first lineup change - other than in goal -after using the same skaters for the first seven games.

With right winger Nino Niederreiter out with a lower-body injury suffered Friday night, so 19-year-old Seth Jarvis made his NHL debut and assisted on Pesce's goal.

''No nerves at all. That's what makes him special, he's out there at the end on the power play,'' Brind'Amour said. ''Plays huge moments, making plays.''

Jarvis, who was a first-round draft pick in 2020, is one of only two players with less than 100 career games to play for the Hurricanes so far this season.

''I had a great time and tons of fun,'' Jarvis said.

FLIP THE CALENDAR

In their last seven October games, the Coyotes faced four undefeated teams and another without a regulation loss.

This was the second one-goal setback for Arizona, though Friday night's 2-0 defeat at Washington included an empty-net goal for the Capitals.

''They fight hard. They work as hard as we can hope and dream,'' Tourigny said. ''But right now we have nothing to show for it. It's too bad.''

{coyotes} Capitals hand Coyotes 8th consecutive loss to start season

WASHINGTON (AP) John Carlson scored a long-awaited power-play goal, Alex Ovechkin added an empty-netter and the Washington Capitals beat Arizona 2-0 Friday night, handing the Coyotes their eighth consecutive loss to start the season.

Carlson's goal with 7:58 left in the third period was the Capitals' third in 25 opportunities on the power play dating to opening night. They came up empty on their first five power-play chances against Arizona before breaking through.

''You're hammering away all night, you're trying to find a goal,'' coach Peter Laviolette said. ''You're trying to make it happen. It's easy to get frustrated and start derailing, and I thought that we stayed with it and got a big goal at the end.''

Washington outshot the Arizona 32-16 but struggled to create quality scoring chances, let alone score, on rookie goaltender Karel Vejmelka before Carlson's shot deflected in off a penalty-killer. Vejmelka, a 25-year-old from the Czech Republic, finished with 30 saves, including a few notable stops at even strength to give the Coyotes a puncher's chance at their first victory of the season.

''`Vej' was rock solid,'' first-year Coyotes coach Andre Tourigny said. ''He was really solid, and he gave us the hope all the time. We were one shot away and we knew `Vej' would be tough to beat.''

Still, the Capitals skated circles around their overmatched opponent, and eventually the talent disparity came through. Ovechkin's goal in the final minute was his league-leading ninth of the season and 739th of his career, two shy of Brett Hull for fourth on the all-time list.

The 36-year-old Ovechkin also tied reigning MVP Connor McDavid for the most points in the NHL at 15 apiece.

''We're not too shocked by it, but it's pretty cool to see,'' Capitals defenseman Justin Schultz said of Ovechkin. ''I don't think he's going to slow down at all.''

Playing its first game without injured winger T.J. Oshie and still missing top center Nicklas Backstrom, Washington avoided back-to-back losses and still has not lost in regulation this season.

''It was a good month,'' Schultz said. ''Obviously not losing in regulation, it's nice. It's a good start for us.''

Rebuilding Arizona fell to 0-8-1 and remained last in the league standings with one point. With 2018 Stanley Cup-winning fan favorite Jay Beagle returning to town, the Coyotes put quite the scare into the Capitals before falling short.

''Got to give Arizona credit too because they played last night and they competed hard out there and competed for ice,'' Laviolette said. ''It came down to the third period having to find a goal.''

Making his third start of the season, Ilya Samsonov stopped all 16 shots he faced to pick up the fourth shutout of his NHL career.

''It was a little bit hard for me because hard to keep concentration,'' Samsonov said. ''A hard win today, but we all feel happy.''

NOTES: Washington's Evgeny Kuznetsov picked up his sixth and seventh assists of the season to tie Tom Wilson for the team lead. ... Carlson assisted on Ovechkin's goal to give him a two-point game. ... Brett Leason made his NHL debut for the Capitals in the absence of Nic Dowd, who aggravated a lower-body injury at the morning skate. ... With Leason in, Washington dressed a lineup with four rookies for the first time since April 7, 2018. ... Former Capitals prospect Travis Boyd was a healthy scratch for Arizona to make room for veteran Swede Loui Eriksson.

{coyotes} Killorn scores 2, Tampa Bay beats Arizona for 1st home win

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) Alex Killorn scored twice in the first period and the Tampa Bay Lightning earned their first home victory of the season, beating the Arizona Coyotes 5-1 on Thursday night.

The Lightning were 0-2-1 at Amalie Arena before beating the Coyotes, who fell to 0-6-1 and have lost the first two games of their five-game trip.

Steven Stamkos had a goal and an assist in the first period, Andrej Sustr also scored and Andrei Vasilevskiy made 24 saves. Vasilevskiy lost his shutout bid when Lawson Crouse scored with 7:24 remaining in the third period.

Rookie goalie Ivan Prosvetov, playing his first game since being recalled from Tucson of the American Hockey League on Wednesday, finished with 23 saves for Arizona in his fourth NHL game.

Tampa Bay took a 1-0 lead 5:39 into the game when Killorn finished off a 2-on-1 break by taking a pass from Stamkos and beating Prosvetov from inside the left circle. Killorn made it 2-0 at 7:40 with his sixth of the season, scoring on a breakaway after Coyotes defenseman David Mayo misplayed the puck at Tampa Bay's blue line.

It became 3-0 at 10:41 when Stamkos ended Tampa Bay's 0-for-15 power-play drought. He controlled the puck behind the net to the right of Prosvetov and backhanded it off the goalie's back and into the net for his fifth goal.

It was the Lightning's first power-play goal at home this season in 12 opportunities.

Tampa Bay had scored one first-period goal in its first six games.

Alex Barre-Boulet scored his first of the season at 13:38 of the second period, using a backhand chip to deflect Mikhail Sergachev's left-point pass over Prosvetov.

The Coyotes avoided the shutout when Crouse scored his second of the season, beating Vasilevskiy from the right circle.

Sustr scored his first of the season with 1:37 remaining on a slap shot from inside the blue line.

{coyotes} NHL sends memo to teams in response to Blackhawks scandal

The NHL sent a memo to all 32 teams Wednesday after serious failings within the Chicago Blackhawks organization were brought to light this week, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported Thursday on The Jeff Marek Show.

"One of the things the NHL sent out in its memo to teams is a reminder that you can report these things now and you are expected to report these things now," Friedman said.

According to ESPN's Emily Kaplan, the memo was titled "Fostering A Safe and Inclusive Culture" and included directions that anyone associated with the league is "required to immediately report" conduct to commissioner Gary Bettman and deputy commissioner Bill Daly that "is clearly inappropriate, unlawful or demonstrably abusive."

In a statement Tuesday, the NHL said it had opened a "confidential and anonymous Hot Line" for any league personal to use to report misconduct.

The NHL has faced a reckoning this week after the findings of an independent investigation into allegations of sexual assault by a former Blackhawks coach against a former player was published Tuesday.

In the investigation, lead investigator Reid Schar of Jenner & Block LLP learned that a meeting was held on May 23, 2010, during which leaders at the time within the Blackhawks organization -- including team president John McDonough, hockey operations executive Al MacIsaac, executive vice president Jay Blunk, general manager Stan Bowman, head coach Joel Quenneville and assistant GM Kevin Cheveldayoff -- discussed how to handle a recent sexual assault allegation made by forward Kyle Beach against assistant coach Brad Aldrich. However, Schar discovered that no action was taken by the organization against Aldrich until mid-June during which time the team completed its quest for the Stanley Cup.

In the aftermath of the report going public, the NHL fined the Blackhawks $2 million and Bowman and MacIsaac resigned from the team. Quenneville -- now head coach of the Panthers -- and Cheveldayoff -- now GM of the Jets -- have meetings scheduled with Bettman to determine what, if any, discipline will be levelled against them for their roles in the situation.

"We acknowledge that the Blackhawks have taken responsibility and ownership for what transpired, and have already implemented new preventative measures, as well as committed to additional changes that may be deemed appropriate as part of its responsive plan of action to the investigation and Report," Bettman said in a statement Tuesday. "Having said that, today's fine represents a direct and necessary response to the failure of the Club to follow-up and address the 2010 incident in a timely and appropriate manner. And, this response should send a clear message to all NHL Clubs and all NHL personnel that inappropriate acts must be addressed in a timely fashion."

{coyotes} Hutton, Timmins each out for Coyotes because of lower-body injury

Carter Hutton is expected to be out 2-4 weeks, and Conor Timmins will be sidelined 8-12 weeks, each because of a lower-body injury sustained in the Arizona Coyotes' 5-3 loss at the Florida Panthers on Monday.

Hutton left after the first period, when he allowed one goal on 11 shots. Karel Vejmelka made 26 saves in relief.

Hutton is 0-2-0 with a 7.76 goals-against average and .741 save percentage in three starts this season. The 35-year-old signed a one-year contract with Arizona on July 28 after three seasons with the Buffalo Sabres.

Timmins, a defenseman, left after being checked into the boards by Panthers defenseman Radko Gukas in the second period. Timmins has no points in six games this season after being traded to Arizona by the Colorado Avalanche on July 28.

Ryan Dzingel was also injured in the loss at Florida; Arizona did not have an update on the center.

The Coyotes recalled goalie Ivan Prosvetov, defenseman Cam Dineen and forward Barrett Hayton from Tucson of the American Hockey League on Tuesday.

The Coyotes (0-5-1) do not have a win in their first six games for the second time in franchise history; they were also 0-5-1 in 2017-18.

"You never hope to go through it, but we're in the thick of it and there's no easy way out," forward Christian Fischer said. "It's going to take a lot of work. It's early, but it [stinks]."

Arizona will play the second of a season-high six-game road trip at the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday.

{coyotes} Panthers stay unbeaten, beat Coyotes 5-3 to move to 6-0

SUNRISE, Fla.- (AP) Frank Vatrano and Joe Thornton each scored their first goals of the season and the Florida Panthers stretched their unbeaten streak to six games with a 5-3 victory over the winless Arizona Coyotes on Monday night.

Anthony Duclair, Jonathan Huberdeau and Aaron Ekblad also scored goals for the Panthers.

Spencer Knight made 18 saves. Brandon Montour had two assists.

Liam O'Brien and Phil Kessel scored late goals for the Coyotes. Clayton Keller also scored a goal.

Carter Hutton made 10 saves before leaving the game after the first period with a lower-body injury. Karel Vejmelka started the second period and stopped 26 shots.

Florida's 6-0-0 record extends the best start in franchise history and is the first 6-0-0 start in the NHL since Montreal in 2015-16.

The Arizona loss marks the second time in the franchise's 42 seasons that they don't have a win after six games (were 0-5-1 to start 2017-18 season)

''You never hope to go through it but we're in the thick of it and there's no easy way out,'' Coyotes forward Christian Fischer said. ''It's going to take a lot of work. It's early (in the season) but it (stinks). We've got to put it together soon.''

Leading 4-1 midway through the third period, the Panthers seemed to be cruising to an easy victory, but O'Brien scored at 11: 57 to make the score 4-2. Kessel scored 34 seconds later to close the Coyotes to 4-3.

''I think we did a good job at capitalizing on our chances,'' Vatrano said. ''I think their goalie made two big saves there where we could have put the game away and we gave them life. It's the NHL and you can't give any team life. We took the timeout, we knew we had the lead and just play hockey the way we know how and close it out.''

Duclair's empty-net goal with 38.9 left made the score 5-3 and iced the game.

''We knew going in it was kind of a dangerous opponent, and I think that being respectful from start to finish is part of it, and sometimes you get ahead, you get a little careless, we get a couple of situations that we mis-played and both ended up in the net, now it's a hockey game,'' coach Joel Quenneville said. ''We nailed it down at the end but certainly don't take anything for granted in this game.''

With the game tied at 1, Vatrano gave the Panthers a 2-1 lead when he found a loose puck in front and swept it past Vejmelka at 6:00 of the second.

Ekblad's power-play goal came on a shot from the point that may have hit a Coyotes player before it went into the net and put the Panthers ahead 3-1.

Huberdeau's goal at 6:54 of the third stretched the Panthers lead to 4-1.

At that point, it seemed the game was over but the two late goals made it a nail-biter until Duclair's empty-netter.

''The guys came out with a lot of pride. They battled hard and we made more plays. I liked our attitude in the third,'' coach Andre Tourigny said. ''We had the right mindset. In the first two we gave up a lot of speed and momentum to Florida.''

The Coyotes took a 1-0 lead on their first shot of the game. Keller pushed the puck between Knight's pads from the slot with 2:17 left in the first. It was the first time this season that the Panthers opponent scored the games' first goal.

The lead didn't last long. Thornton's power-play goal tied the game at 1-all with 18.8 seconds left in the first. Thornton, who signed to a one-year contract this season, poked in the puck from in front. The goal was the 24-year veteran's first as a member of the Panthers.

The Panthers outshot the Coyotes 11-1 in the first and 31-8 through two periods.

NOTES: Panthers C Sam Reinhart his recorded 300th NHL point with an assist on Thornton's goal. This is only the third time in the franchise's 28-year history that the Panthers have at least 10 standings points through six games, joining last season (11 points) and 1996-97 (10). The fewest Florida ever had after six games was two in 2012-13, Jonathan Huberdeau's rookie season. ... Coyotes D Conor Timmons sustained a lower-body injury and did not return for the third period. C Ryan Dzingel did not return after suffering an upper-body injury. There was no further information on the injured players post-game.This was the start of a season-long six-game road trip for Arizona. The Coyotes aren't home again until facing Seattle on Nov. 6.

{coyotes} Sorokin stops 26 shots in Islanders' 3-0 win over Coyotes

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) Brock Nelson had a goal and an assist, Ilya Sorokin stopped 26 shots and the New York Islanders kept the Arizona Coyotes winless with a 3-0 victory Saturday night.

New York got off to slow starts in the first two periods, but Sorokin made some tough saves for his fourth shutout in 27 career games. Cal Clutterbuck and Anthony Beauvillier also scored for the Islanders, who have five points in three games after two opening losses.

''They didn't give us much really in the game, but we were able to capitalize on some chances and Ilya made a couple of key saves,'' Islanders coach Barry Trotz said.

Arizona played perhaps its best game of the season and still came away with a loss.

The Coyotes limited shots on defense, controlled the puck for long stretches of the opening two periods and created plenty of good scoring chances. They just couldn't get anything to go into the net, whether it was because of Sorokin or a bad bounce.

Karel Vejmelka had 21 saves for Arizona, which has one point (0-4-1) in five games this season.

''It's one of those nights where we deserved something to show for it,'' Coyotes first-year coach Andre Tourigny said. ''I believe it will balance out by the end of the season, but I'm proud of the effort, proud of the focus.''

The Islanders arrived in the desert for game five of their season-opening 13-game road trip while construction of their new arena is being completed.

New York missed an opportunity for a second straight win on Thursday, failing to convert when a Columbus player lost his stick before giving up the overtime winner to Patrik Laine.

The Islanders are still ahead of the Coyotes' pace. Arizona has struggled mightily defensively with a rebuilt roster, allowing at least five goals three times while being outscored 22-8 through the first four games.

The Coyotes dominated early, holding New York with a shot on goal the opening 8 1/2 minutes. Sorokin made some tough saves in his fifth straight start - the best on Liam O'Brien from just outside the crease - and Clutterbuck scored late in the first period by keeping it on a 2-on-1, then beating Vejmelka to the glove side.

The second period had a similar feel.

The Coyotes limited New York's shots early, Sorokin made some tough saves and the Islanders scored late. Nelson got it on a power play when a shot by Josh Bailey from between the circles caromed off him past Vejmelka.

Beauvillier made it 3-0 midway through the third period, using a deke to get Vejmelka out of position on a mini breakaway.

''We had chances, were strong on the puck, we created loose pucks and we did the right thing,'' Beauvillier said. ''We had chances and it was a big win for us.''

PENALTY NON-KILL

The Coyotes were going to need some time to gel with an overhauled roster, and expected to hit some bumps along the way.

Perhaps the slowest area to come around is on the penalty kills.

Arizona has allowed a power-play goal in four of five games this season and has allowed five goals in 11 chances on the penalty kill. The Coyotes were 1 for 2 on the penalty kill against New York.

''As a unit, we have a lot of guys who haven't killed before,'' O'Brien said. ''Obviously, you don't want to make excuses, but we're trying to work on things every game.''

ICE CHIPS

New York's Zdeno Chara played in his 1,613th career game, passing Ray Borque for fourth on the NHL's all-time games played list by a defenseman. ... Arizona F Johan Larsson played in his 450th career game. . New York's Kyle Palmieri had a goal waved off midway through the third period after officials ruled Vejmelka had frozen the puck upon review.

{coyotes} McDavid scores 200th goal in Oilers' 5-1 win over Coyotes

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) Connor McDavid scored twice to eclipse 200 career goals and had an assist, Zach Hyman had two goals and the Edmonton Oilers remained undefeated with a 5-1 victory over the winless Arizona Coyotes on Thursday night.

The Oilers were sharp in their first regular-season in the U.S. since March 5, 2020, due to the pandemic, scoring at least five goals for the third straight game.

McDavid scored in the second period to hit the 200-goal mark - two days after teammate Leon Draisaitl reached the milestone - and scored his sixth goal in four games in the third. He has multiple points in every game this season and 11 overall.

Mikko Koskinen had 25 saves in his first start since Mike Smith went on injured reserve with a lower-body injury. Warren Foegele also scored for Edmonton.

Dysin Mayo scored in his NHL debut and Karel Vejmelka stopped 26 shots for the 0-3-1 Coyotes. They allowed at least five goals for the third time this season.

The Coyotes were good in their own end early after first-year coach Alex Tourigny switched up his defensive pairings against Edmonton.

That changed late in the first period, when Foegele used some nifty stickhandling to get around Mayo and beat Vejmelka to the stick side.

The goals kept coming for the Oilers.

Hyman scored a shorthanded goal early in the second, when he kept the puck on a 2-on-1 and beat Vejmelka to the glove side. McDavid made it 3-0 midway through the period, working his way around Coyotes Johan Larsson before whipping a shot past Vejmelka from the right circle.

Arizona finally got to Koskinen early in the third period, when Mayo gathered Ryan Dzingel's cross-ice pass and beat him from the right circle.

The momentum didn't last. Hyman scored on a redirect of a pass from McDavid on a power play and McDavid added his 201st goal a few minutes later on another power play.

{coyotes} Kyrou, Kostin score 2 apiece in 2nd as Blues top Coyotes 7-4

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) Jordan Kyrou had two goals and two assists, and the St. Louis Blues scored five times in a 5:07 span of the second period for a 7-4 victory over Arizona in the Coyotes' home opener Monday night.

Kyrou and Klim Kostin had two goals apiece during the second-period flurry, which began when Justin Faulk scored on a power play to tie it 2-all at 11:10 after goalie Carter Hutton lost his stick during a scramble in the crease.

Kyrou scored his first goal after a Coyotes giveaway at 12:46 to give the Blues a 3-2 lead, and Kostin got two goals 47 seconds apart to make it 5-2 as Arizona had trouble getting the puck out of its own end.

Hutton was pulled for Karel Vejmelka after Kyrou skated in alone to cap the scoring burst for a 6-2 lead at 16:17.

Clayton Keller had a goal and an assist, and Phil Kessel and Shayne Gostisbehere added three assists apiece for the Coyotes, who are winless in three games under new coach Andre Tourigny in his first NHL season.

Pavel Buchnevich and Ivan Barbashev also scored for the Blues, who have won the first two games of a season-opening three-game road trip.

Christian Fischer and Ilya Lyubushkin scored three minutes apart midway through the third period as the Coyotes closed to 6-4, but Barbashev's goal four minutes later closed the door.

The Coyotes are winless in their first three games for the first time since 2017-18, when they opened 0-10-1.

Jordan Binnington made 22 saves for the Blues. Hutton stopped 15 of 21 shots.

Kessel has played in 903 consecutive games, the fifth-longest streak in league history and the third-longest active streak.

Buchnevich was given a five-minute major penalty and ejected with 1:07 remaining in the first period for headbutting Lawson Crouse, whose goal gave the Coyotes a 2-1 lead early in the second.
