TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) Michael Carcone had three goals and an assist in his first career hat trick, and the Arizona Coyotes pounded Connor Bedard and the Chicago Blackhawks 8-1 on Monday night.

Bedard scored 28 seconds into the game, and then it was all Arizona.

Jack McBain had two goals and two assists for the Coyotes, who were coming off consecutive losses to the Los Angeles Kings. Liam O'Brien and Sean Durzi each had a goal and an assist, and Alex Kerfoot had three assists.

Arizona led 7-1 after two periods. It was more than enough for Connor Ingram, who made 31 saves in the win.

Chicago stopped a three-game slide with a 4-3 overtime win at Vegas on Friday, handing the Golden Knights their first loss of the season. But the Blackhawks were unable to build on the effort.

Ingram was seldom tested after Bedard, the No. 1 overall pick in the NHL draft, scored for the third time in four games. Bedard took a cross-ice pass from Kevin Korchinski near the right circle and skated in before flipping in a wrist shot on Ingram's glove side.

It was all Coyotes from there as they improved to 4-4, their best start in four seasons in their second at 5,000-seat Mullett Arena.

Carcone scored at 2:23 on a shot from a severe angle near the goal line. Brown made it 2-1 when put in a rebound of McBain's quick shot from out front, and Carson scored on a power play after Bedard was called for slashing.

Carcone completed his hat trick five minutes into the second, when his shot from the side of the net trickled off Arvid Soderblom's back and rolled in. It was his first career multigoal game.

McBain, Durzi and O'Brien also scored in the second, and Soberblom was replaced after O'Brien's goal with 4:34 remaining in the period. He stopped 15 of 22 shots.

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) Drew Dougnty scored his second goal of the game with 1:59 remaining and the Los Angeles Kings rallied from three goals down and beat the Arizona Coyotes 5-4 on Friday night.

Mikey Anderson, Quinton Byfield and Anze Kopitar also scored for the Kings, who got three goals in the third period to complete a comeback from a 4-1 deficit. Pheonix Copley was pulled after giving up three goals on six shots, and Cam Talbot finished with 16 saves.

Coyotes forward Matias Maccelli scored 37 seconds into the game, and J.J. Moser, Jack McBain and Sean Durzi scored in a 69-second span later in the first for the three-goal lead, but the Kings controlled play the rest of the way and finally caught up in the third period. Karol Vejmelka had 34 saves.

Doughty's power-play goal with 3:49 left in the second made it 4-2.

Byfield scored at 1:50 of the third period to pull Los Angeles within one - just 3 seconds after a power play expired - and Kopitar tied it at 4 on a wrist short from the right circle through a screen at 6:54.

Doughty's slap shot from the above the right circle capped a scoring to put the Kings ahead.

The Kings scored at least four goals in five of their last six games, including a 6-3 victory over the Coyotes in Los Angeles on Tuesday. The Coyotes entered as one of the eight teams to not have lost at home.

The Kings outshot the Coyotes 39-23, and the Coyotes went almost 16 minutes without a shot on goal after Durzi's goal made it 4-1 at 8:55 of the first period. The Coyotes did not have anther shot until Nick Schmaltz's shot on a power play five minutes into the second.

Maccelli scored on a wrist shot from the right circle 37 seconds into the game and Anderson snapped a wrist shot past Vejmelka at 5:56 of the fast-paced the first period before the Coyotes spurted to their 4-1 lead.

Moser controlled a puck on the right side of the net after Schmaltz's shot bounced off the top of the goal and pushed it past Copley at 7:46. McBain scored 35 seconds later when he skated in front of the net and redirected a shot from Liam O'Brien.

Durzi made it 4-1 when he gathered the puck at the red line, spun past defenseman Doughty at the left circle and put a wrist shot past Talbot - the first he faced - at 8:55 for the Coyotes' third goal in 69 seconds.

{coyotes} Coyotes’ Travis Dermott on using Pride tape, forcing NHL’s hand: ‘Had to be done’

--
banners Meal Ninja - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

Travis Dermott had a lot on his mind as he carefully wrapped the shaft of his hockey stick with rainbow-colored tape.

The NHL had dispatched a memo to teams before the season, reiterating its ban on altering on-ice gear for warmups and practices to reflect theme nights.

The Arizona Coyotes defenseman was about to become the first player to defy that edict on supporting social causes — including Pride tape for the LGBTQ community. And he was going to do it in a game.

"A bunch of thoughts are going through your head," Dermott said. "But not one of them was, 'Should I do this or shouldn't I do this?' It was more, 'How fast is it going to blow up? How much is it going to blow up? Is anyone even going to notice?'

"It had to be done. I was going to deal with whatever came my way."

What came his way was an avalanche of support after Dermott sported the tape on Saturday in Arizona's home opener against the Los Angeles Kings.

It also didn't take long for the NHL to backpedal. The league announced less than 72 hours later its ban on using stick tape to support social causes, including rainbow-colored Pride tape, had been rescinded.

The 26-year-old from Newmarket, Ontario, said working for causes away from the rink is great, but on TV under the bright lights is where there's the most exposure.

"That's when those little things would be picked up in the most meaningful way, the most powerful way," he said. "My parents really made it an important lesson that you want to be the best influence you can for the next generation."

Pride nights became a hot-button issue in hockey after six players chose not to participate in pregame warmups last season when their team wore rainbow-themed jerseys. Teams this season are not allowed to wear any kind of theme jerseys, including military appreciation and Hockey Fights Cancer, for warmups.

Players across the league publicly expressed their disappointment of the league's guidance.

Dermott said standing up isn't always easy but becoming a father for the first time last year — and with another baby on the way — shifted his perspective.

"This got laid out in front of me," he said. "And with the amount that I care about (the LGBTQ) community and the amount of ties that I had before doing this, and now the amount of people that have come out of the woodwork saying that this affected them in a way that I didn't even think was possible ... it lets you know it was probably the right move."

It was also a risk. Dermott inked a one-year, two-way contract for about the league minimum in Arizona this summer after an injury-ravaged 2022-23 season with the Vancouver Canucks. He noted he didn't know what the "repercussions could be."

But if things went against him, it would be on his terms.

"That alone pushed me to go through with this," Dermott said. "As well as the support from my team ... they gave me the confidence to stand up for what was right."

{coyotes} Zack Kassian retires after 12 NHL seasons

--
banners Meal Ninja - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

TORONTO (Oct. 26, 2023) Zack Kassian has officially announced his retirement from the National Hockey League today following 12 NHL seasons, which included 661 regular-season games and 45 postseason appearances.

"To play in the NHL is one thing, but to make a 12-year career of it is pretty special," said Zack Kassian. "From coaches to equipment staff and fellow players I've met along the way, I've made so many relationships that are going to last a lifetime."

Born Jan. 24, 1991, in Windsor, Ontario, the first-round pick was selected 13th overall by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2009 NHL Draft. Kassian went on to play for four NHL teams, scoring 92 goals and 111 assists to combine for 203 points. Known for his grit and physical presence on the ice, Kassian's 913 NHL career penalty minutes currently rank ninth among all skaters since the winger joined the league in 2011.

Before his NHL debut, Kassian embarked on his Ontario Hockey League career in 2007-08 with the Peterborough Petes where he served as the team's captain during 2009-10 until he was traded to his hometown Windsor Spitfires that season, and went on to help the club win the 2010 Memorial Cup with a goal and assist in the final. He then represented his country internationally by playing for Team Canada at the 2011 IIHF World Junior Championship, where he earned a silver medal while contributing two goals and an assist.

The 6-foot-3, 211-pound forward picked up his first NHL point with an assist in his NHL debut for the Sabres Nov. 25, 2011, while on the road in Columbus. He scored his first NHL goal the following day in Buffalo as part of a 5-1 victory over the Washington Capitals.

Prior to being traded in February 2012 to the Vancouver Canucks, Kassian played 27 games with the Sabres. Over nearly four seasons in Vancouver, he played 171 games while contributing 59 points. In 2013-14, he skated in 73 games while finishing fourth in goals scored (14), sixth in points (29) and second in penalty minutes (124) among his Canucks teammates.

Kassian began a seven-season tenure with the Oilers after a pair of trades in 2015 sent him from the Canucks to the Montreal Canadiens and, ultimately, to Edmonton. He played in 412 regular-season games and made 37 postseason appearances with the team. During his time in Edmonton, he led the team in penalty minutes for six of his seven seasons, and he scored 136 regular-season points along with nine postseason points.

In 2016-17, Kassian posted 24 points and 101 penalty minutes over 79 games to help Edmonton reach the Stanley Cup Playoffs, ending a 10-season drought for the club. He scored three goals in the postseason run as the Oilers reached the second round. Kassian's best offensive season came in 2019-20, during which he scored 15 goals and 19 assists for 34 points. In his final season with Edmonton, he contributed four points over 16 playoff games while helping the Oilers reach the 2021-22 Western Conference Final. Kassian was traded in July 2022 to the Arizona Coyotes where he would play 51 games in the 2022-23 season.

{coyotes} Fiala, Kings keep rolling on offense in 6-3 win over Coyotes

--
banners Meal Ninja - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

LOS ANGELES (AP) Kevin Fiala had a goal and an assist, Anze Kopitar scored on the power play and had an assist, and the Los Angeles Kings defeated the Arizona Coyotes 6-3 on Tuesday night.

Trevor Lewis, Trevor Moore, Blake Lizotte and Adrian Kempe also scored for the Kings, who had been winless in their first three games on home ice. Pheonix Copley made 24 saves.

Clayton Keller had a power-play goal as he scored for the third straight game, Jack McBain and Nick Bjugstad also scored, but the Coyotes couldn't get their third straight win.

Connor Ingram was replaced midway through the first period after allowing three goals on nine shots. Karel Vejmelka replaced him and made 15 saves.

The Kings shook off a sluggish start, allowing McBain to get to a rebound and put the Coyotes up 2:59 into the game, and responded with three straight goals to close out the first.

Kopitar tied it up on the power play after drawing a hooking penalty, scoring on a one-timer set up by Fiala's eighth assist during a five-game streak of helpers to start the season.

Los Angeles went in front 2-1 on Lewis' first goal of his second stint with the team, putting in a wrist shot from the left circle as the trailing man coming into the zone.

Moore ended Ingram's night with under eight minutes to go in the period, though the goalie was not at fault for leaving Moore unmarked attacking the back post to put in Phillip Danault's pass through the slot.

It was not the shortest start of Ingram's three seasons in the NHL. He was pulled after 11:18 in November 2022 against the Dallas Stars when he gave up three goals on 10 shots.

Arizona cut it to a one-goal deficit twice in the second period. Bjugstad's goal was canceled out by Lizotte's response 1:22 later, but Keller buried a one-timer on the power play late in the middle stanza to pull within 4-3.

Fiala all but locked up the Kings' first home win of the season with his first goal 5:35 into the third period. Vladislav Gavrikov's shot from distance trickled through Vejmelka's legs, and Fiala was able to bat it in.

NOTES: Coyotes forward Jason Zucker is week to week because of a lower-body injury. He was hurt in a 2-1 win against the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday. … Coyotes rookie Logan Cooley got his fifth assist in six games, all of which have come on the power play.

The Coyotes (3-2) have won three of their first five games for the first time since the 2015-16 season when they won their first three, and they won their home opener for the first time since 2016-17.

"So far, so good," said Coyotes coach Andre Tourigny, home after a four-game road trip that included victories over New Jersey and St. Louis and one-goal losses to the Rangers and Islanders. "We had really good opponents in that stretch. The New York teams are elite teams. I'll take it."

Frank Vatrano tipped in a cross-ice pass from Jakob Silfverberg for his fourth goal of the season on a power play to cut the Coyotes' lead to 2-1 at 7:47 of the third period.

The Ducks pulled goaltender Lukas Dostal with two minutes remaining but could not score again in a contentious game that included 14 penalties, eight by Anaheim.

"We want to be competitive," Vatrano said. "We want to be hard to play against. Sometimes the calls don't go your way. We're not going to change the way we play. We just have to do it a little smarter."

Coyotes forward Liam O'Brien and Ducks forward Ross Johnston were given five-minute fighting penalties for a scrap that knocked the goal off its moorings midway through the second period.

"We knew what Anaheim would bring," Tourigny said. "They were really aggressive on the forecheck. It's really draining physically. There are a lot of emotions in that game. You can lose your focus. I really loved the way our guys reacted. They pushed through and found a way to win."

Zucker scored on a quick wrist shot from the top of the right circle that squeaked under Dostal's glove for a 1-0 lead with 2:19 remaining in the first period, nine seconds into a power play.

Dostal saved two shots from Nick Schmaltz from point-blank range minutes earlier on the first of the Coyotes' two power plays.

Keller gave the Coyotes a 2-0 lead with a wrist shot from the top of the right circle at 14:01 of the second period. The Coyotes spent almost a minute working the puck around in their zone before Keller's score, after a delayed penalty call enabled them to pull Vejmelka for an extra skater.

"We had a really good possession, and that opened up play for us," Tourigny said.

The Ducks put their most consistent pressure on Vejmelka during a power play early in the second period. Vejmelka turned aside three shots, two by Trevor Zegras, and the defense blocked three others in the first 80 seconds.

"He played a great game," Vatrano said of Vejmelka.

HOME STILL HOME

The Coyotes, 21-15-5 at home a year ago, began their second season at 5,000-seat Mullett Arena on the Arizona State University campus without a permanent home. Tempe voters last spring rejected a proposed development that would have included a 16,000-seat arena and an entertainment district west of downtown.

"We are using all our resources to secure a new permanent home that will be the envy of Arizona and all of the NHL," Coyotes chairman Alex Meruelo said in a letter to fans two weeks ago. "Know this: we have left no potential option unturned. The Valley is where the organization and I want to be. My family lives here. We are all in."

DUCKLINGS

The Ducks have six rookies on the roster, the most in the league, and also have the most players who are 19 and under (three), 20 and under (four), and 22 and under (seven). Leo Carlsson, at 18 years and 297 days, is the third-youngest player in the league and the third-youngest player in Ducks' history.

"You have to learn as you go," Vatrano said. "Sometimes it's going to be tough to hear things you don't want to hear, but it's only going to help those guys in the long run. Everyone's been through it. We have to have each other's back."

TRAINERS ROOM

Ducks F Brock McGinn (lower body), C Alex Killorn (broken finger) and D Jamie Drysdale (lower body) were held out. Killorn has 198 career goals. ... C Adam Henrique returned after missing the last game with an illness.

Coyotes F Michael Carcone left the ice with 40.1 seconds left in the first period and did not return after taking a shoulder-to-shoulder hit from Rakio Gudas. … Zucker had only 5:33 of ice time before leaving with a lower body injury. ... The Coyotes practiced at Mullett on Friday, their first time on home ice. They opening training camp in Australia.

Arizona Coyotes defenceman Travis Dermott became the first NHL player to use the recently-banned Pride Tape on the shaft of his stick in Saturday's matinee game against the Anaheim Ducks.

The Canadian Press reported in early October that the NHL sent a memo to teams clarifying what players can and cannot do as part of theme celebrations this season, including a ban on the use of rainbow-coloured stick tape for Pride nights.

CP added that the updated guidance reaffirms on-ice player uniforms and gear for games, warm-ups and official team practices cannot be altered to reflect theme nights.

Dermott logged 17:29 minutes of ice time with the tape in the Coyotes' 2-1 win.

When asked if the 26-year-old Newmarket, Ont., native would be fined or disciplined, the NHL told The Athletic "We will review it in due course," in a statement.

ST. LOUIS (AP) Clayton Keller and Nick Schmaltz each had a goal and an assist, sparking the Arizona Coyotes to a 6-2 victory over the St. Louis Blues on Thursday night.

Nick Bjugstad, Jason Zuker and Sean Durzi scored on the power play for the Coyotes, and Michael Carcone added a goal. The Coyotes finished their season-opening road trip 2-2-0.

Jakub Vrana and Sammy Blais scored for St. Louis, which slipped to 1-1-1 with the regulation loss after going to shootouts in its first two games.

Connor Ingram was in net for the Coyotes, who have alternated goaltending duties in each game so far this season. Ingram, who had never faced the Blues, stopped 24 shots.

The Blues' Joel Hofer made first start of the season and his first career start against Arizona. He stopped 36 shots. Last season, Hofer made six starts, going 3-1-1 with a .905 save percentage and 3.22 goals against average.

Bjugstad scored on a power play with a wrist shot from the slot at 14:42 of the first period. Bjugstad's first goal of the season came on a pass from the left circle by Matis Maccelli.

The Coyotes outscored the Blues 3-1 in the second period.

Keller gave Arizona a 2-0 lead by scoring on a nifty backhand finish after an Alexey Toropchenko turnover in the neutral zone at 2:34. Keller got a nice pass from Nick Schmaltz, who has 22 points in 15 games since the 2020-21 season against the Blues.

Keller has 26 points in 25 career games in his hometown of St. Louis.

Vrana scored at 7:02 for St. Louis. Marco Scandella sent a backhand pass to Vrana, who skated into the slot and sent a wrister past Ingram on the stick side.

Arizona got the goal back 42 seconds later when Carcone answered with a wide speed rush that allowed him to cut to the net and slip it past Hofer. That gave the Coyotes two 5-on-5 goals in the game, after they had just one in the previous three.

Keller fed Schmaltz, who scored on a backhander in the slot at 13:58, giving the Coyotes a 4-1 lead.

Zuker's goal came on a power play at 2:09 of the third, scoring on a one-timer after getting a pass from Macelli.

The Blues answered at 3:16 on a goal by Blais.

Durzi scored an unassisted power-play goal at 16:59.

BLUES HALL OF FAME

The St. Louis Blues announced during the first period that Pavol Demitra, Mike Luit, and Keith Tkachuk have been voted as the Class of 2024 for the Blues Hall of Fame. The team will officially induct the players into the team's hall on Jan. 19, 2024, during a ceremonial dinner at the downtown Missouri Athletic Club. The inductees will then be honored prior to the Jan. 20 game, when the Blues host the Washington Capitals.

{coyotes} Report: NHL considering decentralized draft akin to NFL, NBA

--
banners Meal Ninja - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

The NHL has asked teams for their thoughts on a "decentralized" draft akin to the NBA and NFL drafts, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reports.

Should there be a desire for change, Friedman reports the decision could come into effect as soon as the 2025 draft, with an outside chance of the decision affecting the 2024 draft expected to be held in Las Vegas.

The decision would be a stark move away from how the NHL has traditionally conducted the event, with the 2020 and 2021 drafts — both of which were impacted by COVID — the only such years to take place under a format comparable to the decentralized version.

Expanding upon the report in his 32 Thoughts column, Friedman explained that teams would remain in their home cities, with prospects making their way to wherever the draft is held. Currently, NHL teams all descend upon a given market each summer, which provides an opportunity to not only gather nearly the entire hockey world but also leads to plenty of great moments.

Amongst the reported reasons behind the NHL's speculated push to change formats includes the tight window between the draft and opening of NHL free agency. The gap between the two major touchstones on the NHL calendar can be as short as two days — as was the case in 2023 and will again be next summer with the draft falling on June 28-29 both years — leaving teams little time to return to their markets in preparation for the chaos of July 1.

Friedman also reports that concerns exist surrounding conducting "private business" with so many scouts, executives and other team figures "snooping around."

Should the NHL decide to go down the decentralized route, with commissioner Gary Bettman announcing each individual selection, one major change that will need to be worked through will be the time the draft takes to complete. Day 2 of the 2020 NHL draft lasted an astonishing eight and a half hours, largely caused by clubs working abroad in war rooms across the country.

{coyotes} Mathew Barzal scores as New York Islanders beat Arizona Coyotes 1-0

NEW YORK (AP) — Mathew Barzal scored a power-play goal in the second period, and the New York Islanders beat the Arizona Coyotes 1-0 on Tuesday night.

Ilya Sorokin had 14 saves in his first shutout of the season. Noah Dobson and Kyle Palmieri each picked up an assist on the game's only goal in the Islanders' second straight win.

"We were really good in the (offensive zone)," Islanders captain Anders Lee said. "If our forecheck is good and we have an offensive-zone shift, they are getting the puck out and looking to change. We have been on the other side of that at times, its tough to create a lot when you are hemmed in your zone."

Karel Vejmelka made 30 saves for Arizona in its second straight loss. The Coyotes visit St. Louis on Thursday night and then play their home opener Saturday against Anaheim.

Barzal connected on a one-timer at 3:47 shortly after Coyotes forward Barret Hayton was penalized for slashing Simon Holmstrom, preventing a scoring opportunity for New York.

"It was good battle by Palmieri on the faceoff to win the puck back," Barzal said of the play. "I got a little lucky, I kind of fanned on it a touch. But sometimes when you are creating a lot of chances and they are not going in, you get one like that."

Sorokin signed a contract extension this summer after supplanting Semyon Varlamov as the Islanders' starting goalie. The 28-year-old goaltender has three shutouts against the Coyotes and 17 overall for his career.

"Thankfully we didn't force him to be tested too much," Lee said. "When we need him, he's there."

The Coyotes struggled to establish a presence in the offensive zone and only generated seven shots on goal through the first two periods.

"We didn't execute at all," Coyotes coach Andre Tourigny said. "We start the game by trying to do too much. Each line has to find their own identity. ... We need to put pucks on the net. We need to be a little bit simpler, we passed on too many opportunities."

WINNING WAYS

The Islanders won two consecutive games to start the season for the first time since 2014-15, when they opened with four straight victories.
