The Utah HC have signed defenceman Robert Bortuzzo to a one-year, two-way contract on Saturday.

Bortuzzo, 35, finished the season with the New York Islanders after being acquired from the St. Louis Blues for a draft pick in December of 2023.

The 6-foot-4 right-shot defenceman did not record a point in 27 games this season after sustaining a lower body-injury that caused him to miss 30 games. He recorded one assist in the Islanders' five-game loss to the Carolina Hurricanes in the first round of the playoffs.

Bortuzzo is coming off a two-year, $1.9 million deal he signed with the Blues in February of 2022.

Drafted 78th overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2007, Bortuzzo has 20 goals and 74 points in 560 career games split between the Penguins, Blues, and Islanders.

The Thunder Bay, Ont., native helped the Blues to their first Stanley Cup victory in franchise history in 2019.

{coyotes} NHL EDGE stats for Utah Hockey Club

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

1. Defenseman Mikhail Sergachev ranked in the 96th percentile in average shot speed (68.34 mph) and 92nd percentile in top shot speed (98.92 miles per hour) last season.

The trade to acquire Sergachev was one of the most significant moves of the NHL offseason, with the 26-year-old now having a chance to be a workhorse defenseman and first power-play fixture after playing in the shadow of elite defenseman Victor Hedman for his entire career and missing significant time last season because of injuries.

In 2022-23, during Sergachev's best offensive season, he had an even better top shot speed (100.17 mph; 97th percentile), was among the leaders in average shot speed (66.16 mph; 95th percentile) and also excelled in total skating distance (253 miles; 91st percentile), long-range shots on goal (100; 98th percentile; 10th in NHL) and long-range goals (seven; 98th percentile; tied for sixth).

2. Goalie Connor Ingram ranked sixth in the NHL in high-danger save percentage (.833) last season.

Despite the Arizona Coyotes missing the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the fourth straight season, Ingram was their unsung hero last season, ranking ninth in even-strength save percentage (.917) among the 20 NHL goalies who played at least 50 games. The Coyotes scored 149 goals in support of Ingram, which ranked 14th among those 20 goalies who played at least 50 games.

Now, with a young forward group featuring Clayton Keller, Logan Cooley, Matias Maccelli, Dylan Guenther, Barrett Hayton and Josh Doan, and a defenseman group led by Sergachev, Sean Durzi and John Marino (acquired from New Jersey Devils), Ingram could reaffirm his role as the clear starter over Karel Vejmelka and help Utah become one of the most improved teams in the NHL with a realistic chance to make the playoffs.

3. Guenther was among the NHL leaders in average skating distance per 60 minutes at even strength (10.16 miles; 88th percentile) last season.

Arizona's offense ranked sixth in the NHL in midrange goals (83) last season, led by Keller's strong totals in midrange shots on goal (75; 91st percentile) and midrange goals (eight; 86th percentile). But in order for Utah to take the next step toward the postseason, its middle-six scorers like Guenther, Lawson Crouse, Maccelli and Doan will need to play close to full seasons and achieve better possession metrics.

The Coyotes generated 27.7 shots on goal per game last season, tied for the fifth fewest in the NHL, and allowed 31.7 per game, the ninth most in the League; they also ranked 22nd among the 32 teams in shot attempts percentage (48.5). But Guenther's breakout stretch late in the season (23 points, 73 shots on goal in final 23 games since March 1) on a line with mostly Cooley and Crouse is what Utah will need more consistently on a separate unit from top forwards Keller and Nick Schmaltz.

{coyotes} 3 questions facing Utah Hockey Club

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

1. How do the former players handle the transition?

No team in the NHL is undergoing a more tumultuous offseason than the Utah Hockey Club, which will be playing its first season after the NHL Board of Governors voted on April 18 to establish the franchise.

There are houses to be bought, schools to be found, a whole new infrastructure to make work.

But unlike the expansion teams in Las Vegas in 2017-18 and Seattle in 2021-22, the Utah Hockey Club is made up of an already-in-place team, with players who have been teammates for years. That should help bring some continuity to a situation where there is so much upheaval.

There is excitement in the city, which should help, and there's also now certainty. For a long time, the players didn't know what their future would hold. Now, they do. It'll be up to them how they handle it.

2. How will the team's revamped defenseman group perform?

The Utah Hockey Club made two major acquisitions this offseason, each on the defensive end of the ice. Utah acquired 26-year-old Mikhail Sergachev in a trade with the Tampa Bay Lightning and 27-year-old John Marino in a trade with the New Jersey Devils on June 29.

At the time, coach Andre Tourigny said of Sergachev, "No doubt he's our No. 1 defenseman."

The moves should be massive for a franchise trying to take the next step in its rebuild, with Sergachev signed for eight seasons and Marino for three. They fit nicely into the young core that Utah is building and will help push the pace and move the puck.

But, still, there are questions: How will the defense as a whole perform? How will Sergachev play coming off a broken leg that limited him to 34 games in the regular season before he returned for Tampa Bay's final two games in the Stanley Cup Playoffs?

3. How do their young players continue to progress?

If there's anything the Utah Hockey Club has, it's young talent.

That starts with players like Logan Cooley, 20, Dylan Guenther, 21, Matias Maccelli, 23, and Josh Doan, 22. But those players need to continue to take steps to build on what they've done in the NHL to this point, like the 44 points (20 goals, 24 assists) Cooley had in 82 games during his rookie season in 2023-24 and the 35 points (18 goals, 17 assists) that Guenther had in 45 games last season.

They added two big weapons in the 2024 NHL Draft -- 18-year-old forward Tij Iginla with the No. 6 pick and 18-year-old center Cole Beaudoin with the No. 24 pick -- building on a prospect pool that should be the envy of many clubs.

And with a coach in Tourigny, whose hallmark is working with young players, the future is bright for Utah. How bright it is this season, though, could come down to how soon those players can continue to progress.

{coyotes} Top prospects for Utah Hockey Club

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

1. Dmitriy Simashev, D

How acquired: Selected with No. 6 pick in 2023 NHL Draft
2023-24 season: Lokomotiv Yaroslavl (KHL): 63 GP, 4-6-10

Simashev boasts an impressive profile, starting with his size (6-foot-4, 198 pounds) and his skating ability. Utah has been pleased with his defensive IQ and his ability to break up plays.

"If you want to become faster, add two fast guys. If you want to become tougher, add two tough guys. If you want to get big, we're going to add some size to our team with Simashev and (Danil) But and you throw (Maveric) Lamoureux in the mix," Utah general manager Bill Armstrong said.

Projected NHL arrival: Next season

2. Tij Iginla, F

How acquired: Selected with No. 6 pick in 2024 NHL Draft
2023-24 season: Kelowna (WHL): 64 GP, 47-37-84; Canada (WJC): 7 GP, 6-6-12

The conversation about Tij Iginla (6-0, 182) starts with bloodlines.

His father is Hockey Hall of Fame forward Jarome Iginla. Tij plays a style of hockey reminiscent of his father's, with skill and competitiveness at the center and wing positions, along with a similar build and heavy shot.

"It'll be interesting to see what Iginla can do," Armstrong said. "He's somebody that you get excited about. Prospect camp he was lights out."

Projected NHL arrival: Next season

3. Maveric Lamoureux, D

How acquired: Selected with No. 29 pick in 2022 NHL Draft
2023-24 season: Drummondville (QMJHL): 39 GP, 9-24-33; Canada (WJC): 5 GP, 1-2-3

Continuing Utah's commitment to size is Lamoureux (6-6, 196), a 20-year-old defenseman who has had some setbacks over the past few seasons with surgery on each of his shoulders.

Though Utah traded for two defensemen this offseason, "underneath that, in the following years, you've got Simashev and Lamoureux coming that are going to add some size to us and some mobility," said Armstrong, who has previously compared Lamoureux to Colton Parayko of the St. Louis Blues.

Not only does Lamoureux bring size and mobility, but he has the hockey IQ and playmaking ability to succeed in the NHL.

Projected NHL arrival: Next season

4. Daniil But, F

How acquired: Selected with No. 12 pick in 2023 NHL Draft
2023-24 season: Lokomotiv Yaroslavl (KHL): 55 GP, 10-11-21

But (6-5, 203) is an enormous forward with enormous talent, a player who can score and play a 200-foot game.

"He was pretty interesting at our development camp because our fans obviously didn't know who he is, but when they were chanting his name at the end of the game after he had five goals, they did," Armstrong said. "We found a player in him that not only had the ability to score, make plays, great hockey sense, but he had tremendous size. We like that combination. We think that's a unique combination that can help us win a championship at some point."

The 19-year-old averaged just 9:26 minutes per game last season, but Armstrong said he battled to have an impact and put up 21 points.

Projected NHL arrival: 2026-27

5. Cole Beaudoin, F

How acquired: Selected with No. 24 pick in 2024 NHL Draft
2023-24 season: Barrie (OHL): 67 GP, 28-34-62; Canada (WJC): 7 GP, 2-2-4

Utah moved up in the draft to land Beaudoin at No. 24, trading the No. 38 and 71 picks this season and a second-round pick next season for the 18-year-old center.

"We think that Cole has the ability to almost change our culture in some degree [with] how hard his work ethic is and how he plays and how he thinks about the game," Armstrong said. "He's a really incredible kid on his thought process of trying to make the NHL and trying to get better."

Projected NHL arrival: Next season

{coyotes} Inside look at Utah Hockey Club

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

While most of the NHL is preparing for new arrivals in the form of draft picks and free agents ahead of the 2024-25 season, things are a little different in Utah. Players and staff for the Utah Hockey Club are picking out houses, choosing school systems and finding their way to the nearest grocery store.

But once training camp starts, the Utah Hockey Club will get started on a season that it hopes will end in a competitive spring -- and maybe even in a spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

General manager Bill Armstrong won't go quite that far, though.

"I really like the way it's come together," Armstrong told NHL.com in late July. "I like the way the organization is set up. It's very rare that you don't have a bad contract on your team, and we've set ourselves up to now make that next step.

"But it also has to happen organically. You can't just make it happen on paper. The team has to make a step on the ice. And they have a chance to do that this year. If we can be playing meaningful games down the stretch, it's going to be a hell of a season."

The Utah Hockey Club officially joined the NHL on June 13 and purchased the contracts of Arizona Coyotes executives, coaches and players, taking over a rebuild that is in its fourth year. To go along with a bright young core, the organization has accumulated and hit on draft picks to bolster its prospect pool by taking on contracts and developing a scouting staff.

It has gotten them to the point where Armstrong will call his charges "a decent team."

And though everyone in Utah, from the new owners to its newest fans, would welcome a playoff spot, that's something Armstrong believes is a goal for next season. For this season, he's keeping his expectations more tempered.

"If you look at our roster, how far we stripped it down, it's very rare that a team going through the rebuild coming out of the fourth year makes the playoffs," Armstrong said. "We've got to set realistic goals here. I don't see us [in the postseason] -- you never know -- but it's unlikely. What we want to do is take that step where we know we can be in the hunt and play meaningful games.

"If we can do that coming down the stretch and be driving in the final 20 games, it's going to give us a lot of momentum for the following season."

How will Utah prepare for their inaugural season?

Still, Armstrong went out and made a splash before the opening of free agency on July 1, acquiring Mikhail Sergachev in a trade with the Tampa Bay Lightning and John Marino in a trade with the New Jersey Devils. The two defensemen will strengthen Utah's defense, which ranked 25th in the League last season (3.34 goals against per game). Armstrong said he felt that the team had been able to build its base of forwards through the draft but was thin on the defensive side.

"We're basically trying to trade our way into that group of building a good D," he said, acknowledging that Utah does have some highly regarded defensive prospects on the way in Dmitriy Simashev and Maveric Lamoureux. "That core is slowly coming together. You're trying to build a good top four that can play major minutes and give us some stability on the back side, which we haven't had in the past three years."

Adding those defensemen to a forward group that is led by Clayton Keller and some rapidly developing young players -- Logan Cooley, Dylan Guenther, Matias Maccelli and Josh Doan -- and it's easy to understand that the future is bright for Utah, which gets a fresh start this season.

"I think the excitement level, from not only the players but the staff going there, seeing the excitement in the fans' eyes, it's just been an amazing experience," Armstrong said.

The Utah players saw that firsthand when they were greeted at the airport on April 24 by hundreds of local youth hockey players, followed by a welcome event at Delta Center that was packed by fans.

"Everywhere you go, they're just hockey crazed," Armstong said.

That helps. It helps that the players and staff know now where their long-term future will be. It helps that their new home has received them so well.

And now it's up to them to reward that excitement.

"It was like the sun suddenly appeared and the clouds separated," Armstrong said. "Now the franchise could finally take a step."

Re: [cactuswings 4670] Mojave flyover.

Hi

I'm heading to the boneyards and elsewhere in September.

Checked and confirmed with Midfield Aviation at Apple Valley that they DO NOT do flyovers of Victorville or Mojave any more.

I've booked with Corsair Aviation out of Van Nuys 17/09. More expensive but saves time on the drive out.

Hope that helps
Damien

I believe the operator that is based at Apple Valley near Victorville were happy to fly up to MHV… but I seem to remember something about them not being able to do overflights of VCV anymore, but maybe worth investigating? Unfortunately I can't remember their name, but maybe someone on here can?

I believe the operator that is based at Apple Valley near Victorville were happy to fly up to MHV… but I seem to remember something about them not being able to do overflights of VCV anymore, but maybe worth investigating? Unfortunately I can't remember their name, but maybe someone on here can?

Double Eagle are good but they are in Tucson, AZ.

Duncan was asking about Mojave, CA.

I don't know of any operators that do this at Mojave although I imagine someone will.

Good luck

Pete

Hi Duncan,

I have used Double Eagle/Velocity Air a number of times over the last 10 years and they are brilliant.  Dope Jim/Tim and e-mail and they will sort it all for you.  My advise is get the earliest departure as possible.
