SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Roope Hintz scored his team-leading 15th goal to help the Dallas Stars beat Utah 3-2 on Monday night.

Hintz snapped a 1-1 tie 12:39 into the second period. Jamie Benn and Colin Blackwell also scored for Dallas, and Casey DeSmith made 24 stops.

The Stars had lost two in a row.

Kevin Stenlund and Barrett Hayton scored for Utah, and Karel Vejmelka had 27 saves. Utah has won just one home game in December.

Dallas jumped in front in the first when Blackwell scored following a Utah turnover. Stenlund responded with his sixth of the season at 12:41.

Benn lifted the Stars to a 3-1 lead when he got his seventh with 2:10 left in the second.

Utah pulled one back on Hayton's goal with 8:21 left in the third but couldn't find the tying goal.

Stars: Aggressive defense and relentless attacking helped Dallas create several quality shots during a dominant second period.

Utah: Home ice struggles continued for Utah, which fell to 1-4-3 in its last seven home games.

The second-period goals for Hintz and Benn gave the Stars enough of a cushion to pull out a second road win against Utah in December.

The Stars had an 18-6 advantage in shots on goal in the second.

Dallas hosts Minnesota on Friday, and Utah hosts Colorado on Friday.

{coyotes} Mason McTavish scores in shootout and sends the Ducks to a 5-4 win over Utah

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Mason McTavish was the only scorer in the shootout and the Anaheim Ducks rallied from a three-goal deficit, beating the Utah Hockey Club 5-4 on Sunday.

Robby Fabbri scored twice and Isac Lundestrom and Brett Leason added goals for Anaheim, which won for the third time in four games after a five-game skid. Lukas Dostal finished with 21 saves.

Clayton Keller had two goals and two assists. Barrett Hayton and Logan Cooley also scored and Jaxson Stauber made 26 saves for Utah, which had its four-game winning streak halted.

Keller tapped in the puck off a rebound 86 seconds into the first period and Utah never trailed in regulation. Fabbri tied the game five minutes into the period, scoring off a takeaway.

Keller helped Utah pull away from the Ducks, assisting on the goals by Hayton and Cooley. Then, Keller scored his second goal on a snap shot with 14:03 left in the second period, giving Utah a 4-1 lead.

Anaheim chipped away at its deficit and forced overtime when Leason scored on a power play with 4:45 left in regulation.

Ducks: Anaheim went 0 for 5 on the power play before Leason's late equalizer.

Utah: A defensive collapse in the third sent Utah to its second shootout loss in its last three home games.

A diving Fabbri got his second goal with 7:25 left in the third, when he sent the puck trickling through Stauber's legs, giving Anaheim a chance to erase its deficit and force overtime.

Keller has six goals and five assists in his last six games. He has 13 goals and 22 assists this season.

Anaheim is at Vegas and Utah hosts Dallas, with both games on Monday.

It'd been almost two years since my last visit to Goodyear and in that report I rued the construction of warehouses in the immediate vicinity of the airport.  In a word I was Rong.

The warehouses have resulted in parking lots that allow easy driving access to sightlines from which almost the entire field can be soaked up with ease.  My visit at dawn (or possibly it was just the lack of occupancy?) meant that these parking lots were completely empty and, well, I feasted.

Also, the new (new on my 2023 visit at least) segment of South Bullard Avenue between the baseball facilities and the airfield has also helped immensely.

This was my best visit to Goodyear ever, in my >10 years visiting this airfield.  There are still bits of the field and the hangars which are tough but wow.  Below is my full log, brought to you by the color yellow.

After lunch, and while working from my mobile command post, I headed east to check out Mesa Gateway Airport.  There was nothing quite so dramatic out there but the place is always worth visiting.  Thursday must be a peak day for Allegiant because I never recall seeing so many movements there in the past…the landside was bursting at the seams.

The Intel parking lot was full but there were no aircraft outside – perhaps there's still some time left before their shuttle closes?  The small observation area proved a good place to observe movements and the distant, anonymous ramp for deportation flights…now a GlobalX franchise.  Oh, and Allegiant has taken over the hangar previously used by the mystery C-130 operator.  And there were no commercial-grade aircraft at Embraer's now-much-harder-to-see ramp.

Warehouses are popping up all over the Gateway area as well and the mapping program directed me to the airport by roads that I don't recall ever using.  The Valley of the Sun is booming!

Noted below are my non-Allegiant sightings.

Aeronaves TSM     CRJ  XAADS   freighter
GlobalX           320  N630VA
320  N289GX  white with Alaska rudder

PHX (12/19/2024)
----------------
The Sky Train (sorry Freddie!) remains a great way to see things, as do the huge airside windows in Terminal 3.  There were no major surprises in the failing daylight and I took an early flight home.  The interesting bits are noted below.

Ameriflight        SWM  N370AE  active, Texas flag fin c/s
Ameriflight        SWM  N578AF  missing an engine
Arizona Cardinals  772  N777AZ
Contour            ER3  N16501  at FBO
Westwind           CNA  N786WW  at cargo ramp
                   752  MRISE   at FBO
                   772  N865DA

…plus another Ameriflight Metro missing an engine in the small scrapping area slash hangar, the standard 757/E170 at the Honeywell facility, nothing at the distant Mesa hangar, and at the FBO a mostly-white BBJ2 that defied my attempts to read it off.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) Dylan Guenther scored his second goal of the game midway through the third period and the Utah Hockey Club beat the Minnesota Wild 2-1 Friday night.

Guenther beat Marc-Andre Fleury five seconds into a power play for the go-ahead goal.

Karel Vejmelka made 28 saves for Utah, which won its season-high fourth straight game and seventh straight road game, extending its league record for most consecutive road wins by a franchise in its inaugural season.

Mats Zuccarello had the Minnesota goal, and the Wild have lost four of five and have been outscored 19-9 in that span. Fleury finished with 16 saves.

Zuccarello completed a three-person passing play with Kirill Kaprizov and Marco Rossi for a 1-0 Minnesota lead midway through the first period, but Guenther scored his first a minute later.

Utah: Utah was 1 for 3 on the power play. In its past 13 games, Utah has scored 13 power-play goals on 36 tries, including eight goals in the last six outings.

Wild: Injury-plagued Minnesota had Brock Faber in the lineup after he was struck in the side of the neck by a shot during Wednesday's 6-1 loss to the Panthers. He went to the hospital to be evaluated and said it now feels like he has a bad case of strep throat.

Utah appeared to go up 2-1 midway through the second period on a rebound goal by Jack McBain, but Minnesota successfully challenged that there was goaltender interference by Kevin Stenlund.

Wild right wing Ryan Hartman doesn't have a point in his past 14 games and doesn't have a goal in 16 games. He has four goals and three assists in 28 games this season after recording 21 goals and 24 assists in 74 games last season.

Utah opens a three-game homestand Sunday against Anaheim. Minnesota is at Winnipeg Saturday.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Mikhail Sergachev scored 4:48 into overtime to lift the Utah Hockey Club to a 3-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday night.

Clayton Keller and Nick Schmaltz scored for Utah in the third period to force overtime. Karel Vejmelka made 24 saves. Logan Cooley added two assists.

Danton Heinen and Dakota Joshua scored for Vancouver, and Thatcher Demko stopped 28 shots. Quinn Hughes assisted on both goals.

Utah: Utah is now on a three-game winning streak.

Schmaltz tied the game at 2-2 on a power play with 4:30 to play, after Utah trailed 2-0 earlier in the period.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) Clayton Keller scored a power-play goal with 43.8 seconds remaining and the Utah Hockey Club rallied to beat the San Jose Sharks 4-3 on Saturday night.

Michael Carcone tied it midway through the third and then Utah won it during 4-on-3 play shortly after Cody Ceci was called for high-sticking.

Utah won the faceoff and Keller got the puck in the slot and beat Vitek Vanecek for his 10th goal of the season.

Dylan Guenther and Nick Schmaltz also scored for Utah. Karel Vejmelka made 19 saves.

Fabian Zetterlund gave San Jose a 3-2 lead early in the third period on the power play but the Sharks couldn't close it out. Alexander Wennberg and Mikael Granlund also scored for San Jose. Vanecek made 36 saves.

Utah: Utah has won four of five games and has points in all five thanks to the comeback win.

Sharks: San Jose returned home following a 3-3 road trip and had a lead early in the third period but couldn't close it out. The Sharks have lost four of five games.

Utah forward Kevin Stenlund sent San Jose rookie Macklin Celebrini into the boards with a hit from behind in the second period that didn't lead to a penalty to the ire of the Sharks. Celebrini was able to stay in the game. Stenlund tripped Celebrini in a preseason game that sent him into the boards in a crash that injured Celebrini's ankle.

Celebrini assisted on Zetterlund's goal and has 20 points in his first 21 career games. The other other 18-year olds in the last 30 seasons to do that are Sidney Crosby (25 points), Ryan Nugent Hopkins (22) and Patrick Kane (22).

Utah hosts Vancouver on Wednesday night while the Sharks host Winnipeg on Tuesday night.

DENVER (AP) Dylan Guenther had two goals and an assist and the Utah Hockey Club beat the Colorado Avalanche 4-1 on Thursday night.

Vladislav Kolyachonok and Kevin Stenlund also scored as Utah improved to 3-0-1 in its last four games. Karel Vejmelka stopped 22 shots.

Nathan MacKinnon scored his 11th goal of the season for Colorado, and Scott Wedgewood had 19 saves in his first home start with the Avalanche since coming over in a trade with Nashville on Nov. 30. The Avalanche snapped a three-game win streak.

Guenther opened the scoring at 8:26 of the first period when his centering pass deflected off Artturi Lehknonen's skate and past Wedgewood. Kolyachonok and Guenther then scored 1:47 apart midway through the second period to put Utah up 3-0.

MacKinnon made it 3-1 with 4:34 left in the third, but Stenlund scored into an empty net 23 seconds later.

Utah: Has a losing record at home but is 9-6-2 on the road. Utah has won five straight road games, where it plays six of its next 10 games.

Avalanche: New goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood served as Wedgewood's backup three days after being acquired from San Jose. Blackwood is expected to be Colorado's No. 1 goalie

Colorado had a chance to cut into the deficit in the final minute of the second period when Cale Makar's shot trickled through Vejmelka and landed in front of the net. Casey Mittlestadt fanned trying to knock it in and Utah was able to clear it out of the crease.

MacKinnon's goal was his 946 career point, tying him with Michel Goulet for third in franchise history.

Utah travels to San Jose on Saturday night while the Avalanche host Nashville.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Matt Boldy was the only scorer in the shootout and lifted the Minnesota Wild to a 5-4 victory over the Utah Hockey Club on Tuesday night.

Minnesota's Marco Rossi scored with 43.2 seconds left in regulation to force overtime. Kirill Kaprizov added his 18th goal of the season, and Marat Khusnutdinov and Marcus Johansson also scored for the Wild. Filip Gustavsson finished with 21 saves.

Clayton Keller scored twice in the third period to rally the Utah Hockey Club from a one-goal deficit. Kevin Stenlund and Juuso Valimaki also scored, and Karel Vejmelka made 34 saves.

Utah lost its fifth straight home game. Minnesota won for the sixth time in seven games.

The Wild erased a 1-0 deficit late in the second after scoring twice in a 36-second span. Khusnutdinov evened the score when he raced down the middle unobstructed and snapped the puck past Vejmelka. Minnesota went up 2-1 after Kaprizov swiped the puck from Olli Maatta and scored on a successful counterattack.

Keller rallied Utah with two third-period goals, both coming on the power play. Valimaki's goal with 8:15 remaining gave Utah a 4-3 lead before Rossi forced overtime.

Wild: Minnesota dominated on defense through the first two periods, allowing just 12 shots on goal before slipping a bit during a chaotic third.

Utah: Keller has 22 points in 28 career games against Minnesota after scoring his eighth and ninth goals of the season.

Rossi gave the Wild new life when he snapped the puck through two sets of legs and over Vejmelka's hip for the tying goal.

Minnesota has recorded a league-leading 12 road wins through 17 games.

Minnesota returns home for five straight games, starting with Edmonton on Thursday. Utah visits Colorado on Thursday.

{coyotes} NHL salary cap projected to jump to at least $92.4 million next season, Bettman says

--

MANALAPAN, Fla. -- The NHL salary cap is projected to be $92.4 million next season with the potential of it climbing slightly higher pending a possible negotiation between the League and NHL Players' Association, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said Tuesday.

This season's salary cap is $88 million.

Bettman, speaking at the end of the two-day NHL Board of Governors meeting at Eau Palm Beach Resort & Spa with NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly, also said the League is currently projecting $6.6 billion in revenues for this season.

"The cap under the current guidelines in the Collective Bargaining Agreement would go up 5 percent," Bettman said Tuesday. "As we look at revenues, we're going to have discussions with the Players' Association about escrow levels and whether or not the cap can or should be tweaked a little more on an ongoing basis, but that's something that we have to really work out with the Players' Association and we're having those discussions."

Bettman said those discussions with the NHLPA could be done separately from upcoming collective bargaining discussions.

"I wouldn't necessarily view the CBA as the only point in time that you can make adjustments," Bettman said. "We might decide to make an adjustment and then deal with the CBA. We may decide to make it all part of the package. It's a little more free flowing."

The NHL and NHLPA have been meeting regularly, including as recently as last week, Bettman said. The current plan is for the two sides to begin formal discussions on a new CBA in February.

The current CBA expires in September 2026, but Bettman has said the hope is to have the new agreement finalized sometime in 2025, potentially before the Stanley Cup Final.

Bettman also indicated items such as a new schedule format and extending the salary cap into the Stanley Cup Playoffs could be part of collective bargaining discussions if they are topics of interest to each side.

"I don't want to prognosticate on collective bargaining," Bettman said. "We have a very open, constructive relationship with the Players' Association right now. I find working with (NHLPA executive director) Marty Walsh and (assistant executive director) Ron Hainsey, as does Bill, very constructive, very professional, very cordial. So we're not going to get ahead of ourselves and prognosticate as to what's going to happen, although we hope to do this as quickly and as seamlessly as possible."

Daly said the League has been in regular communication with the International Olympic Committee and the International Ice Hockey Federation to finalize the NHL's agreement with those governing bodies to have players participate in the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan, Italy.

"We're getting close," Daly said. "We exchanged some more documents with the IOC and IIHF on Friday. I remain confident we'll get there soon."

Daly said the NHL recently received a positive update on the state of the construction of the arena that will be used for the Olympic hockey tournaments.

"They still are on track for an October completion, and they want to have a test event in December," Daly said. "I know (NHLPA senior director of international strategy and growth) Rob Zepp had occasion to be there within the last two weeks. He said impressive progress."

The League said last February that NHL players will participate in the 2026 Olympics pending agreements with the IOC and IIHF, with the intent of starting a regular rotation of Olympic participation and a World Cup of Hockey.

The NHL and NHLPA will hold the 4 Nations Face-Off with the United States, Canada, Sweden and Finland competing in Montreal and Boston from Feb. 12-20.

Daly said the League also still is working with the IIHF toward finalizing plans for a World Cup of Hockey in 2028. The Board heard an update on that progress this week.

There is no date set to announce plans for the World Cup.

"We had intensive discussions with them during the World Championship," Daly said. "We've updated those discussions over time. We had a meeting with the IIHF in November in Toronto and expect to hear more back from them sometime hopefully before the end of the calendar year."

In addition, the Board of Governors heard presentations from Rogers Sportsnet executives, including Tony Staffieri, the CEO and president of Rogers Communications, and Collette Watson, the president of Rogers Sports and Media.

The NHL's Canadian media rights agreement with Rogers expires after next season and Bettman said the League and Rogers will begin an exclusive negotiating window Jan. 1.

"We thought it would be a good opportunity before we began those formal discussions that they have an opportunity to talk to the board and talk about their view of the world and our relationship," Bettman said. "I think that was very well received."

Shane Jacobson, the CEO of the V Foundation, spoke to the BOG about the first year of the relationship between the V Foundation and the NHL's Hockey Fights Cancer Initiative.

"We've together done some really good work to raise consciousness and raise money for research," Bettman said.

Michael Rubin, the CEO of Fanatics, the NHL's official uniform outfitter, gave a presentation about the transition the League went through from adidas to Fanatics and how together they can continue to grow the League's licensing business.

"We find ourselves in a very strong, good place coming off what may have been the best season we ever had last year," Bettman said. "I think it was all good."
