{coyotes} Ten minute overtime? Longer TV timeouts? 4 Nations Face-Off is an NHL testing ground

MONTREAL (AP) — Canada and Sweden traded chances back and forth, skating up and down the ice for 3-on-3 overtime that provided dazzling entertainment in the opener of the 4 Nations Face-Off.

By the time Mitch Marner scored the winner for Canada, more than six minutes had elapsed. Had it been during the NHL regular season, the horn would have sounded at the 5-minute mark and the game decided in a shootout.

Extending OT to 10 minutes is one of the experiments taking place at the tournament that could go into use as soon as next season. There's still plenty of debate over whether it should, and Marner's goal made it a hot topic in Montreal.

"I don't know. It's a good question," Finland captain Aleksander Barkov said Thursday. "Obviously there's a lot of games — 82 regular-season games — and on top of it, if you keep adding longer and longer overtimes, I don't know how guys would take that. I'm fine with how it is right now."

Canada's Nathan MacKinnon, who played more than a third of OT, said the discussion even came up in Canada's locker room on Wednesday night. His answer about 10-minute overtimes becoming a reality in the NHL was clearer than he could see by the end of that game.

"No. No. No," MacKinnon said. "I was happy when Marner scored because I didn't have much left to give, so 5 to 7 would be good."

Changing the rules would require an agreement between the league and Players' Association, though it's good timing for that with collective bargaining talks ongoing and official negotiations on the horizon. Adding more of a workload without extra pay is a strike against extending OT, and it would tax the top players more than others.

"I like it as far as I think it's more fun, overtime," U.S. goaltender Jake Oettinger said. "You have to ask the top players that would be playing extra minutes, I think, for them, but I vote yes on it. I think it's great."

It would also increase the likelihood of games ending before a shootout, which Canada's Mark Stone called "a glorified skills competition." Self-professed shootout-hating U.S. defenseman Zach Werenski would prefer that but is concerned at the potential consequences.

"In overtime, usually your top guys are going and if it's a back to back or whatnot, obviously it takes a lot out of you," Werenski said. "It was something to mess around with, I think, especially maybe preseason or something just to see how guys feel. I wouldn't be opposed to going to 10 minutes. I just don't like shootouts that much."

The NHL is also using the tournament to try adding 30 seconds to each of the three television timeouts every period and subtracting a minute from each of the two intermissions. Canada coach Jon Cooper isn't sure about how much of an impact that might have, if any.

"TV timeouts are long as it is," Cooper said. "Can you recharge some of your top-end players? Of course you can. But then what does it do to the guys that haven't been out there, haven't been out before the TV timeout? And now you've got to wait through that. It's kind of the double-edged sword in that part."

The 4 Nations is also using the international system of awarding three points for a regulation win, two for an overtime or shootout win, one for an overtime or shootout loss and none for a regulation loss.

"I feel like it makes a bigger difference in the end," Sweden's Lucas Raymond said. "I'm used to it back in Sweden when I was playing, it was always a three-point system. It's a little bit different, but it for sure brings a bigger impact."

Changing the point system is the least likely thing for the NHL. When asked about it, Commissioner Gary Bettman has said there is not much of an appetite to abandon the current format of two points for a win of any kind and one for an overtime or shootout loss.

{coyotes} Eriksson retires from NHL after 16 seasons

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

Loui Eriksson retired from the NHL on Monday after 16 seasons.

The 39-year-old forward had 613 points (253 goals, 360 assists) in 1,050 games with the Dallas Stars, Boston Bruins, Vancouver Canucks and Arizona Coyotes. He also had 14 points (six goals, eight assists) in 44 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

Eriksson last played in the NHL during the 2021-22 season, when he had 19 points (three goals, 16 assists) in 73 games for the Coyotes.

"It's time," Eriksson said in a post by CAA Hockey on Instagram. "After a year and a half of reflection, it's time to officially retire. Hockey has given me more than I could have ever imagined. I've had the highest of highs and lowest of lows, but at the end of the day, I'm so thankful for the memories that I'm bringing as I walk away from the game of hockey."

Selected by Dallas in the second round (No. 33) of the 2003 NHL Draft, Eriksson made an immediate impact, scoring in his NHL debut against the Colorado Avalanche on Oct. 4, 2006.

The best stretch of his career came from 2008-12, when he had 278 points (118 goals, 160 assists) in 325 games for the Stars, which ranked 21st in the League. During that span, he was also selected to play in the NHL All-Star Game in 2011, when he finished with a career-high 73 points (27 goals, 46 assists) in 79 games.

Eriksson was traded to Boston on July 4, 2013, as part of the deal that brought Tyler Seguin to Dallas.

"A special thank you to the Dallas Stars organization for helping me as a young man transition into the life of an athlete in the states, for believing in me and giving me a chance to play in the NHL and making my dreams come true," Eriksson said. "The city of Dallas and the friends I crossed paths with through the years will forever have a special place in my heart."

{coyotes} Nick Schmaltz scores the shootout winner to send Utah to a 5-4 victory over the Capitals

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

WASHINGTON (AP) Nick Schmaltz scored the shootout winner, leading the Utah Hockey Club to a 5-4 win over the Washington Capitals on Sunday.

Josh Doan and Dylan Guenther each had a goal and an assist, and Michael Carcone and Jack McBain also scored for Utah, which has won three of its last four games. Utah jumped out to an early lead when Doan scored just over a minute into the game and Carcone scored 32 seconds later.

Connor Ingram had nine saves on 11 shots before leaving the game due to an upper-body injury. Karel Vejmelka stopped 30 of 32 shots in relief and all three shootout attempts for Utah.

Tom Wilson scored twice, Alex Ovechkin had three assists and Dylan Strome and Pierre-Luc Dubois added goals for Washington, which has lost three of its last five games. Logan Thompson, who entered the game ranked second in the NHL in save percentage, made 24 saves.

Utah: Dylan Guenther continues to be a force on offense, extending his point streak to four games. He has seven points in that span and reached the 20-goal mark for the first time in his career.

Capitals: After going three straight games without a power-play goal, Washington went 2 for 2 with a man advantage.

After a late rally by Washington forced overtime and an eventual shootout, Nick Schmaltz deked Thompson and beat him high on the stick side.

Alex Ovechkin didn't inch closer to Wayne Gretzky's scoring record, but his three assists extended his point streak to five games and moved him past Phil Esposito for 11th place on the NHL's all-time point list.

After a break for the 4 Nations Face-Off, the Capitals are at Pittsburgh on Feb. 22. Utah is at Los Angeles, also on Feb. 22.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) Seth Jarvis had two goals and two assists, and the Carolina Hurricanes beat Utah 7-3 on Saturday to stop a three-game losing streak.

Sebastian Aho added two goals and an assist for Carolina, which scored a total of three times during its losing streak. Jalen Chatfield, Jordan Martinook and Jack Roslovic also scored, and Pyotr Kochetkov made 36 saves to reach the 20-win mark.

Clayton Keller scored twice and Josh Doan had a goal for Utah, which won its previous two games in overtime. Karel Vejmelka stopped 31 shots.

The Hurricanes scored four times, including two goals from Aho, across the last 15 minutes of the second period.

Utah: Keller took over the team lead with 20 goals. But the team stumbled in the second.

Hurricanes: Andrei Svechnikov and Jackson Blake each had two assists as the Hurricanes avenged a November setback at Utah.

The second-period outburst for the Hurricanes included a short-handed goal by Aho that made it 4-2 at 14:14.

Aho reached the 20-goal mark for the ninth season in a row. He has scored in six of the last nine games.

Utah goes to Washington on Sunday, and Carolina is off until Feb. 22 at Toronto.

{coyotes} Blues beat Utah 2-1 on Jordan Kyrou's late goal to snap 4-game losing streak

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Jordan Kyrou broke a tie on a slap shot at 7:13 of the third period, Jordan Binnington made 24 saves and the St. Louis Blues beat the Utah Hockey Club 2-1 on Sunday night to end a four-game losing streak.

Alexandre Texier opened the scoring for the Blues late in the first period. St. Louis beat Utah for the first time this season after losing two previous meetings.

Michael Kesselring tied it for Utah early in the third. Connor Ingram made 27 saves as Utah dropped it third straight at home.

Texier threaded the puck between Ingram's legs off a wrist shot with 2:19 left in the first. Kesselring tied it at 3:27 of the third on a long-distance slap shot.

Blues: St. Louis imposed its will on defense early, posting a 15-6 advantage in shots on goal during the first period.

Utah: An inability to consistently pressure the goal contrasted Utah's earlier wins over the Blues where it averaged 4 goals.

Kesselring injected brief life into a potential Utah rally with his 67-foot blast. Kyrou's go-ahead goal gave St. Louis enough of a cushion to snap the four-game skid.

St. Louis improved to 14-1-2 this season when leading after the first period. The Blues have 17 wins in 25 games where they've scored first.

Both teams are back in action Tuesday niht. St. Louis opens a six-game homestand against Edmonton, while Utah hosts Philadelphia.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Zach Werenski scored on a breakaway 1:01 into overtime and the Columbus Blue Jackets beat the Utah Hockey Club 3-2 on Friday night.

Kirill Marchenko and Kent Johnson scored in the third period to rally Columbus from a two-goal deficit. Danil Tarasov stopped 34 shots.

Nick Schmaltz and Alexander Kerfoot scored for Utah and Clayton Keller assisted on both goals. Karel Vejmelka finished with 20 saves as Utah lost its second straight in overtime and fourth in a row overall.

In the extra period, Cole Sillinger swiped the puck from Barrett Hayton and passed to Werenski, who snapped the puck past Vejmelka's outstretched stick.

Schmaltz tapped in the puck at the tail end of a power play, putting Utah on the board 41 seconds into the second period. Utah extended its lead to 2-0 when Kerfoot scored on a long-distance wrist shot 29 seconds into the third.

Marchenko got Columbus withing one at 6:25 after snapping in the puck from close range. Johnson tied it with 8:18 left.

Blue Jackets: Columbus has now scored two or more goals in four straight road games.

Utah: Schmaltz has found the scoresheet in 10 of his last 11 games with five goals and seven assists in that stretch.

Marchenko's 21st goal of the season breathed new life into Columbus after offensive struggles limited the Blue Jackets to 15 shots on goal through the first two periods.

Utah is a league-leading 66 for -74 on penalty kills over its last 28 games.

Blue Jackets play at Dallas on Sunday, and Utah hosts St. Louis.

The National Hockey League salary cap is expected to rise significantly over the next three seasons, according to projections released by the league and the NHLPA on Friday.

The salary is expected to jump by $7.5 million to $95.5 million in 2025-26, with a rise to $104 million the following season and $113.5 million in 2027-28.

"Both Clubs and Players have sought a certain level of predictability with respect to Payroll ranges from year to year and over time for advance planning capabilities," NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly told TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun. "In reviewing our numbers with the Players' Association as part of our collective bargaining, we finally felt like we were in a position to give them that.

"It's not 'absolute certainty,' but maybe it's the next best thing.''

The forecast comes with several big-name players currently slated to become unrestricted free agents this summer, including newly acquired Carolina Hurricanes star Mikko Rantanen. Toronto Maple Leafs forwards Mitch Marner and John Tavares are also playing on expiring deals, along with Nikolaj Ehlers of the Winnipeg Jets and Boston Bruins captain Brad Marchand.

The salary cap for this season sits at $88 million after rising $4.5 million from the previous $83.5 million mark.

The salary cap for the 2022-23 season was $82.5 million, marking the first time the cap increased in three years due to the pandemic as it remained at $81.5 million from the 2019-20 campaign through 2021-22.

{coyotes} Utah adds Outlaws as choice to fan vote for permanent nickname

The Utah Hockey Club is making a change to the list of options fans can vote on for a permanent nickname.

The team announced Thursday that Outlaws will now be a choice, along with Mammoth and Hockey Club. Wasatch, the name of a mountain range in Utah, was one of the three original options offered by the team on Wednesday, but the first night of fan voting changed the team's mind.

Outlaws was one of the six previous finalists in an earlier stage of voting.

"Hey Utah hockey fans! We listened to your feedback and dug into all the Qualtrics data from last night's survey. For the team name, it's clear Outlaws should be in the mix instead of Wasatch, so we're swapping it out," the team posted on social media. "Surveys will continue at the arena Friday, Sunday and Tuesday for you to vote for the options Utah Mammoth, Utah Hockey Club and Utah Outlaws.

"Excited to see the votes roll in."

Smith Entertainment Group announced Wednesday that fans will be able to vote at iPad stations set up throughout Delta Center for a four-game stretch that began with Wednesday's 3-2 overtime loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

"The voting at this stage of the process will only be done in-arena." Smith Entertainment Group executive Mike Maughan said. "We're doing that because this time we're including names and potential logos with them. … Because of the logos, we're doing this only in-arena and not showing those publicly so that we can protect those images."

Utah plans to announce the winning name and logo at a time to be determined following the end of this season and before the start of next season. Hockey Club was the name selected for Utah's inaugural NHL season after co-owners Ryan and Ashley Smith purchased the contracts of Arizona Coyotes executives, coaches and players.

Fan voting will continue when Utah hosts the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday, St. Louis Blues on Sunday and Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday. Maughan estimated Utah will have approximately 15,000 fans at the each of the four home games who will have the opportunity to vote.

Maughan said it is to be determined whether there will be another stage needed after this one to select the winning name and logo, but, ultimately, the fans will have the final say because Ryan and Ashley Smith see the team as "a community asset."

"[The Smiths] view this as a really exciting opportunity to do something that has never been done in the history of professional sports, which is involve fans to this level and go with them through this entire process as we seek to name a team together," Maughan said. "That's what we're very excited about. They are very community-focused and community-oriented people, and we're excited to be able to announce this next stage of the process where we'll be working with everybody on the naming of the team."

The fan survey will be run utilizing methodology provided by Qualtrics, an experience management company that Ryan Smith co-founded. The same process was used to select the "Mountain Basketball" uniforms worn by the Utah Jazz NBA team.

This is the fourth stage of fan involvement, which began with an open invitation for suggestions. Those suggestions were narrowed down by voting to the top 20 and, subsequently, the top six. Hockey Club and Mammoth are the remaining names from voting on that top six. Wasatch was a new submission in place of Yeti, but that has been replaced by Outlaws.

Utah decided to move on from Yeti after being unable to reach a coexistence agreement with Yeti cooler company, which Maughan said has, "a unique and strong trademark on anything published 'Yeti' or 'Yetis', either the singular or the plural … on clothing or any other licensed gear."

The name Wasatch is in tribute to the Wasatch Mountains that run from the Utah-Idaho border south to central Utah.

During the survey, fans will be able to choose from different combinations of the names and associated logos, including what they would look like on jerseys and on the ice.

Although the United States Patent and Trademark Office rejected submissions for Hockey Club and Mammoth previously, along with the 18 other names from the final 20, Maughan said that was not a surprise and that plans are in place to resolve any issues with the names under consideration.

"This is a very standard part of any process naming, "Maughan said. "Now, obviously, we're trying to do things in a much more condensed fashion than has largely ever been done before in professional sports, so we're expediting that entire process. But nothing is unexpected. … We've known about all of those for months and have strategies to deal with anything that would be coming out from the trademark office regarding any of the names previously on the list or that remain on the list today."
