SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Zach Werenski scored on a breakaway 1:01 into overtime and the Columbus Blue Jackets beat the Utah Hockey Club 3-2 on Friday night.

Kirill Marchenko and Kent Johnson scored in the third period to rally Columbus from a two-goal deficit. Danil Tarasov stopped 34 shots.

Nick Schmaltz and Alexander Kerfoot scored for Utah and Clayton Keller assisted on both goals. Karel Vejmelka finished with 20 saves as Utah lost its second straight in overtime and fourth in a row overall.

In the extra period, Cole Sillinger swiped the puck from Barrett Hayton and passed to Werenski, who snapped the puck past Vejmelka's outstretched stick.

Schmaltz tapped in the puck at the tail end of a power play, putting Utah on the board 41 seconds into the second period. Utah extended its lead to 2-0 when Kerfoot scored on a long-distance wrist shot 29 seconds into the third.

Marchenko got Columbus withing one at 6:25 after snapping in the puck from close range. Johnson tied it with 8:18 left.

Blue Jackets: Columbus has now scored two or more goals in four straight road games.

Utah: Schmaltz has found the scoresheet in 10 of his last 11 games with five goals and seven assists in that stretch.

Marchenko's 21st goal of the season breathed new life into Columbus after offensive struggles limited the Blue Jackets to 15 shots on goal through the first two periods.

Utah is a league-leading 66 for -74 on penalty kills over its last 28 games.

Blue Jackets play at Dallas on Sunday, and Utah hosts St. Louis.

{coyotes} NHL salary cap expected to jump to $95.5M next season; rise to $113.5M in 2027-28

--

The National Hockey League salary cap is expected to rise significantly over the next three seasons, according to projections released by the league and the NHLPA on Friday.

The salary is expected to jump by $7.5 million to $95.5 million in 2025-26, with a rise to $104 million the following season and $113.5 million in 2027-28.

"Both Clubs and Players have sought a certain level of predictability with respect to Payroll ranges from year to year and over time for advance planning capabilities," NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly told TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun. "In reviewing our numbers with the Players' Association as part of our collective bargaining, we finally felt like we were in a position to give them that.

"It's not 'absolute certainty,' but maybe it's the next best thing.''

The forecast comes with several big-name players currently slated to become unrestricted free agents this summer, including newly acquired Carolina Hurricanes star Mikko Rantanen. Toronto Maple Leafs forwards Mitch Marner and John Tavares are also playing on expiring deals, along with Nikolaj Ehlers of the Winnipeg Jets and Boston Bruins captain Brad Marchand.

The salary cap for this season sits at $88 million after rising $4.5 million from the previous $83.5 million mark.

The salary cap for the 2022-23 season was $82.5 million, marking the first time the cap increased in three years due to the pandemic as it remained at $81.5 million from the 2019-20 campaign through 2021-22.

{coyotes} Utah adds Outlaws as choice to fan vote for permanent nickname

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

The Utah Hockey Club is making a change to the list of options fans can vote on for a permanent nickname.

The team announced Thursday that Outlaws will now be a choice, along with Mammoth and Hockey Club. Wasatch, the name of a mountain range in Utah, was one of the three original options offered by the team on Wednesday, but the first night of fan voting changed the team's mind.

Outlaws was one of the six previous finalists in an earlier stage of voting.

"Hey Utah hockey fans! We listened to your feedback and dug into all the Qualtrics data from last night's survey. For the team name, it's clear Outlaws should be in the mix instead of Wasatch, so we're swapping it out," the team posted on social media. "Surveys will continue at the arena Friday, Sunday and Tuesday for you to vote for the options Utah Mammoth, Utah Hockey Club and Utah Outlaws.

"Excited to see the votes roll in."

Smith Entertainment Group announced Wednesday that fans will be able to vote at iPad stations set up throughout Delta Center for a four-game stretch that began with Wednesday's 3-2 overtime loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

"The voting at this stage of the process will only be done in-arena." Smith Entertainment Group executive Mike Maughan said. "We're doing that because this time we're including names and potential logos with them. … Because of the logos, we're doing this only in-arena and not showing those publicly so that we can protect those images."

Utah plans to announce the winning name and logo at a time to be determined following the end of this season and before the start of next season. Hockey Club was the name selected for Utah's inaugural NHL season after co-owners Ryan and Ashley Smith purchased the contracts of Arizona Coyotes executives, coaches and players.

Fan voting will continue when Utah hosts the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday, St. Louis Blues on Sunday and Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday. Maughan estimated Utah will have approximately 15,000 fans at the each of the four home games who will have the opportunity to vote.

Maughan said it is to be determined whether there will be another stage needed after this one to select the winning name and logo, but, ultimately, the fans will have the final say because Ryan and Ashley Smith see the team as "a community asset."

"[The Smiths] view this as a really exciting opportunity to do something that has never been done in the history of professional sports, which is involve fans to this level and go with them through this entire process as we seek to name a team together," Maughan said. "That's what we're very excited about. They are very community-focused and community-oriented people, and we're excited to be able to announce this next stage of the process where we'll be working with everybody on the naming of the team."

The fan survey will be run utilizing methodology provided by Qualtrics, an experience management company that Ryan Smith co-founded. The same process was used to select the "Mountain Basketball" uniforms worn by the Utah Jazz NBA team.

This is the fourth stage of fan involvement, which began with an open invitation for suggestions. Those suggestions were narrowed down by voting to the top 20 and, subsequently, the top six. Hockey Club and Mammoth are the remaining names from voting on that top six. Wasatch was a new submission in place of Yeti, but that has been replaced by Outlaws.

Utah decided to move on from Yeti after being unable to reach a coexistence agreement with Yeti cooler company, which Maughan said has, "a unique and strong trademark on anything published 'Yeti' or 'Yetis', either the singular or the plural … on clothing or any other licensed gear."

The name Wasatch is in tribute to the Wasatch Mountains that run from the Utah-Idaho border south to central Utah.

During the survey, fans will be able to choose from different combinations of the names and associated logos, including what they would look like on jerseys and on the ice.

Although the United States Patent and Trademark Office rejected submissions for Hockey Club and Mammoth previously, along with the 18 other names from the final 20, Maughan said that was not a surprise and that plans are in place to resolve any issues with the names under consideration.

"This is a very standard part of any process naming, "Maughan said. "Now, obviously, we're trying to do things in a much more condensed fashion than has largely ever been done before in professional sports, so we're expediting that entire process. But nothing is unexpected. … We've known about all of those for months and have strategies to deal with anything that would be coming out from the trademark office regarding any of the names previously on the list or that remain on the list today."

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Sidney Crosby scored at 3:54 of overtime and the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Utah Hockey Club 3-2 on Wednesday night.

Marcus Pettersson and Erik Karlsson scored in regulation as Pittsburgh snapped a three-game losing streak. Alex Nedeljkovic made 27 saves.

Mikhail Sergachev and Michael Carcone scored for Utah, and Connor Ingram had 25 saves.

In the extra period, Crosby got a drop pass from Cody Glass at the bottom of the left circle, skated across the front of the goal and put a backhander over Ingram's left pad.

Sergachev, back in Utah's lineup after missing five games with an upper-body injury, opened the scoring with a power-play goal with 5:09 left in the first period.

Pettersson tied it at 6:40 of the second, before Carcone put Utah back ahead less than 2 minutes later.

Karlsson tied it at 6:17 of the third.

Utah: Utah remained in sixth place in the Central Division, just one point behind St. Louis.

Pittsburgh: The Penguins finished 3-4-0 on a seven-game trip.

Karlsson picked up a loose puck at the blue line as Utah was trying to clear it, and skated in on the right side and beat Ingram up high to tie the score in the third period.

The Penguins improved to 9-17-5 when giving up the first goal.

Utah hosts Columbus on Friday, and Penguins host Nashville on Saturday.

{coyotes} Utah Hockey Club narrows the choice of a permanent name to three finalists

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Utah Hockey Club has chosen three finalists for the permanent team name it will adopt beginning with the 2025-26 NHL season.

The franchise will use a final round of fan voting to decide among the Utah Mammoth, Utah Hockey Club and Utah Wasatch. Team officials backed away from including Yeti as a finalist after being unable to work out a co-existence agreement with Yeti Coolers to use the name in branding and merchandising.

"They have a unique trademark that allows them to prevent the use of the word Yeti or Yetis," Smith Entertainment Group executive Mike Maughan said. "They made a determination for the sake of their brand that they didn't want to enter into a coexistence."

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office earlier this month refused a request by the club, citing a "likelihood of confusion" with other notable brands using the name, such as Yeti Coolers. An email sent Wednesday by The Associated Press to Yeti Coolers LLC seeking comment was not immediately returned.

Fans in attendance at the next four home games, starting Wednesday night against Pittsburgh, will vote at designated iPad stations at the Delta Center to help decide the team's name and logo. It will unveil a first look at designs for the logo, jerseys and branding associated with each choice.

Only fans in attendance will be allowed to vote at the Penguins game, against Columbus on Friday, St. Louis on Sunday and Philadelphia on Tuesday. The permanent team name and logo will be unveiled ahead of Utah's 2025-26 regular-season opener.

Wasatch filled the finalist spot originally intended for Yeti. Wasatch is a reference to the Wasatch Mountains, which run north to south along the east side of the Salt Lake Valley.

"We wanted to honor this idea people had for a mythical snow creature like the Yeti and bring a very Utah-centric approach to it," Maughan said. "Because we have the Wasatch Mountains, because we have the Wasatch Front, we have so many different iterations or ways we can do it. We wanted to honor the sentiment of one of those top names of the last iteration (of fan voting) while also including a Utah-centric version of it."

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) Cole Perfetti scored three goals for his first NHL hat trick and the Winnipeg Jets beat the Utah Hockey Club 5-2 on Friday night.

Nikolaj Ehlers had a goal and two assists to reach 500 points for his career, and David Gustafsson also scored for Winnipeg. Connor Hellebuyck had 17 saves.

Barrett Hayton and Nick Schmaltz scored for Utah, and Connor Ingram stopped 25 shots.

Perfetti gave Winnipeg a 3-2 when he lifted the puck over a fallen Ingram on a pass from Vladislav Namestnikov at 5:51 of the third.

Ehlers scored on a breakaway with 7:44 left, and he reached the 500-point mark with an assist on Perfetti's empty-net goal that completed his hat trick with 1:45 to go.

Perfetti opened the scoring with a one-timer past Ingram with 2:08 left in the first period.

Utah tied it as Schmaltz deflected Michael Kesselring's point shot past Hellebuyck at 1:13 of the second.

Gustafsson took advantage of a bad bounce off the boards on a shot by Dylan DeMelo that drew Ingram out of position and fired the puck into an open net at 8:48.

Hayton tied it 2-2 at 1:19 of the third.

Utah: Utah relied on Ingram to make many saves as the Jets just kept firing and managed to score on their rare chances. They may have tired in the third after playing in Minnesota on Thursday night.

Jets: Winnipeg came out firing pucks and it paid off with a pair of slumping forwards scoring. They kept the pressure on, even after Utah tied the score early in the third period.

Ehlers stole the puck at his own blue line and raced down the ice on a breakaway and beat Ingram by sliding in a backhand with little more than seven minutes left in regulation to give Winnipeg a 4-2 lead.

Perfetti snapped a 14-game scoring slump.

Utah visits Ottawa on Sunday, and Jets host Calgary.

{coyotes} Vejmelka makes 26 saves, Hayton scores twice in Utah's 4-0 victory over the Wild

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) Karel Vejmelka made 26 saves for his first shutout of the season, Barrett Hayton scored twice and Utah beat the Minnesota Wild 4-0 on Thursday night for its third straight victory.

Clayton Keller and Lawson Crouse also scored, and defenseman Nick DiSimone assisted on both of Hayton's goals.

Filip Gustavsson made 25 saves for Minnesota. The Wild have lost five of seven.

Hayton's first goal was part of an early surge by Utah, which outshot the Wild 16-5 and outscored them 2-0 in the opening period.

Hayton closed the scoring early in the third with a backhander off a rebound that Gustavsson couldn't control.

Utah: Utah is two points out of the second wild-card spot in a crowded Western Conference playoff field.

Wild: Despite welcoming star forward Kirill Kaprizov and captain Jared Spurgeon back to the lineup after extended absences, Minnesota came out flat. The Wild rebounded with a more consistent attack in the final two periods, but Vejmelka kept them off the scoreboard.

Less than two minutes into the game, DeSimone fired a shot from the top of the right circle. Hayton had set up in front of the net, and his tip skipped past Gustavsson, giving Utah a lead it never relinquished.

Hayton has seven points in his last four games with three goals and four assists.

Utah is at Winnipeg on Friday night. Minnesota hosts Calgary on Saturday night.
