{coyotes} Owners of NBA’s Jazz and NHL’s Utah Hockey Club unveil renovation plans to add seats to arena

The owners of the NHL's Utah Hockey Club and NBA's Jazz are beginning a massive renovation of their downtown Salt Lake City Arena that will eventually increase hockey capacity to roughly 17,000 and basketball to nearly 19,000 fans.

Smith Entertainment Group announced its plan Wednesday after a meeting of the Salt Lake City Council earlier in the week.

Officials said the initial stage of renovations this summer should boost the number of full-ice view seats by 1,400: 1,000 new ones and upgrading 400 that had a sightline of just one end of the rink in the team's first season in the city.

"Just in Year 1 (post-renovations) we're going to see a great improvement for the lower-bowl capacity for hockey," Jazz president Jim Olson said on a video call with reporters.

To make room for a new retractable seating system and install a new ice floor slab, the floor is getting raised 2 feet and lengthening the arena bowl by roughly 12 feet at each end.

"(Delta Center) was built solely for basketball," Olson said. "When you come and plop the size of an ice sheet in that venue with those sightlines, the geometry just doesn't work, and so that's where you come up with the riser-system configuration. You come up with raising the floor 2 feet. We are absolutely protecting the basketball experience but then also creating a great hockey experience where all the seats can see all the ice."

The plan is for renovations at the building that opened in 1991 to take place over the next three summers.

The NHL team, which was called the Utah Hockey Club as a placeholder after Ryan and Ashley Smith bought the Arizona Coyotes and moved them to Salt Lake City, is expected to have a full-time name before next season. Its YouTube channel showed as the Utah Mammoth for a brief time Tuesday night.

Mammoth, Outlaws and Utah Hockey Club are the finalists.

"Progress continues on exploring all three of the name options that were chosen as finalists by our fans," SEG executive Mike Maughan said. "We're fully on track to announce a permanent name and identity ahead of the '25-26 NHL season and look forward to sharing that with our fans when we do."

{coyotes} NHL to hold draft lottery May 5

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

There will be plenty of excitement and intrigue surrounding the 2025 NHL Draft Lottery, which will be held May 5 at NHL Network studios in Secaucus, New Jersey. The event will be broadcast on ESPN in the United States and Sportsnet and TVA Sports in Canada, at a time to be announced.

The prize for the team that wins the No. 1 pick appears to be defenseman Matthew Schaefer (6-foot-2, 183 pounds), who played for Erie of the Ontario Hockey League.

Schaefer, who is No. 1 on NHL Central Scouting's final ranking of North American skaters, has been compared by scouts to Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski because of his skating, competitiveness and hockey sense.

"He is the best available prospect at his position and the results he achieves with his combination of speed, skills and size give him the edge for the No. 1 spot," NHL Central Scouring director Dan Marr said. "While his game is still maturing, he's playing a style that will transition well once he gets his NHL opportunity."

Schaefer did not play again after having surgery Dec. 30 because of a broken clavicle sustained three days earlier while playing for Canada at the 2025 IIHF World Junior Championship in Ottawa. He also missed the opening nine games of the season because of mononucleosis. When Schaefer was able to play, he had 22 points (seven goals, 15 assists) and a plus-21 rating in 17 games. He could become the first player from Erie to go No. 1 in the NHL draft since Connor McDavid to the Edmonton Oilers in 2015.

The lottery will set the order of selection for the first 16 picks for the clubs that failed to qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Upper Deck 2025 NHL Draft will be held at L.A. Live's Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. The first round will be held June 27 (7 p.m. ET; ESPN, ESPN+, SN, TVAS), with rounds 2-7 on June 28 (Noon ET; NHLN, ESPN+, SN, SN1).

There will be two drawings, one to determine the No. 1 pick and a second to determine the No. 2 choice. No team can move up more than 10 spots in the draft order; only the top 11 teams in the lottery are eligible for the No. 1 pick. If a team outside the top 11 wins, the team with the worst record in the NHL will pick No. 1.

The San Jose Sharks (20-50-12), who finished with the League's worst record, have the best odds to win the lottery at 18.5 percent, followed by the Chicago Blackhawks (25-46-11) at 13.5 percent and the Nashville Predators (30-44-8) at 11.5 percent.

The Sharks won the lottery last year and selected forward Macklin Celebrini with the No. 1 pick of the 2024 NHL Draft. The 18-year-old tied for second among NHL rookies this season with 63 points (25 goals, 38 assists) in 70 games.

There are two skilled forwards who could challenge Schaefer for the No. 1 spot, especially if a team is in need of a top-two center in the very near future.

Michael Misa of Saginaw (OHL) and James Hagens of Boston College in Hockey East are Nos. 2-3, respectively, on Central Scouting's list of North American skaters.

Misa (6-1, 184) is the first player in Saginaw history to win the Eddie Powers Trophy as the top scorer in the OHL, finishing the regular season with 134 points (62 goals, 72 assists). The Saginaw captain had at least one point in 60 of 65 regular-season games and tied John Tavares (2006-07) for the most points by an OHL player under 18 since 2000 (Misa turned 18 on Feb. 16). His style of play has been compared to Nashville Predators center Steven Stamkos.

"He's the type of player that, if there's a man in a better position for a scoring opportunity and if the proper read is to get the puck to that man, he'll do it," Central Scouting's Nick Smith said. "And he does it with such quickness and elite hockey sense that it's just great to watch."

Hagens (5-10, 177), whose playmaking ability and skating resemble Clayton Keller of the Utah Hockey Club, was third for Boston College with 37 points (11 goals, 26 assists) in 37 games skating as the No. 1 center between Gabe Perreault (New York Rangers) and Ryan Leonard (Washington Capitals). He also tied for the United States lead with five goals in seven games to help the U.S. win the gold medal at the 2025 WJC.

"I mean, as far as like driving and creating plays, Misa has lit the lamp more, but Hagens played in a bigger, stronger league and can do that too," Smith said. "I think Misa may be a little bigger, a little stronger down low, and maybe in the trenches a little bit more, but they're pretty similar players."

Rounding out the top six North American skaters are right-shot center Jake O'Brien with Brantford (OHL), right-shot defenseman Radim Mrtka of Seattle in the Western Hockey League and right wing Porter Martone of Brampton (OHL).

Forwards Anton Frondell and Victor Eklund are Nos. 1-2, respectively, on Central Scouting's International skater ranking. They each play for Djurgarden in Sweden's second division.

Frondell (6-1, 198), a center, had 25 points (11 goals, 14 assists) in 29 games. Eklund (5-11, 161), a right wing and the brother of San Jose Sharks forward William Eklund, had 31 points (19 goals, 12 assists) in 42 games.

"Some minor injuries slowed [Frondell] a bit during the early season but he's a strong skater, skilled, and a two-way player," NHL Director of European Scouting Jukka-Pekka Vuorinen said. "Eklund plays with a lot of confidence and intensity. He's a playmaker with an ability to manipulate with great vision and creativity."

Though Schaefer is the projected No. 1 pick, Marr said anything can happen in the opening round.

"This is a deep draft class in the top three rounds and it's great for the NHL to have such a solid crop of top-end prospects," Marr said. "The top three or four players will likely be interchangeable depending on one's definition of best available and the rest of the top 10 will be hard to displace."

{coyotes} Utah trio, Swayman among 18 named to USA worlds roster

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

Three Utah Hockey Club players highlight the United States roster for next month's IIHF World Championships on Thursday.

Logan Cooley and Clayton Keller and defenceman Michael Kesselring highlight the initial 18 players set for the American entry in Sweden and Denmark.

"We really like our team," Team USA general manager Jeff Kealty said in a statement. "We have a group with significant international experience and I know our players are excited about representing our country on the world stage and competing for a gold medal."

Up front Cooley and Keller will be joined by Tage Thompson of the Buffalo Sabres, Cutter Gauthier of the Anaheim Ducks, the Vancouver Canucks' Conor Garland and Drew O'Connor, Matty Beniers of the Seattle Kraken, the Nashville Predators' Michael McCarron and Frank Nazar of the Chicago Blackhawks.

On the blueline, Kesselring is accompanied by the Preds' Brady Skjei, who is the oldest player on the team at 31, Jackson LaCombe of the Ducks, the Boston Bruins' Mason Lohrei and Andrew Peeke and the Blackhawks' Alex Vlasic.

Among the goaltending options is the youngest player on the team in 19-year-old Los Angeles Kings prospect Hampton Slukynsky, fresh off of a national championship at Western Michigan. He's joined by the Kraken's Joey Daccord and Jeremy Swayman of the Bruins.

Cooley, 20, set career highs in his second NHL season with 25 goals and 40 assists in 75 games played. The Pittsburgh native has previously represented the US on a number of occasions, including at back-to-back world juniors in 2022 and 2023, but this will mark his first appearance with the senior team.

Keller, 26, is a worlds veteran, having previously played in the 2017 and 2019 tournaments. A native of Chesterfield, MO, Keller was a member of the team that won gold at the 2017 IIHF World Junior Championship in Montreal and Toronto. He appeared in 81 games this past season, his ninth in the NHL, scoring 30 goals and adding 60 assists for a career-high point total.

Kesselring, 25, will participate in his second straight worlds, having played last year in Czechia where Team USA finished fifth. He appeared in all seven games, scoring two goals and an assists. The Florence, SC native appeared in all 82 games for Utah this past season, notching a career-high 29 points.

The team will be coached by San Jose Sharks bench boss Ryan Warsofsky.

Team USA will compete in Group B alongside Czechia, Switzerland, Germany, hosts Denmark, Norway, Kazakhstan and Hungary. They open their tournament against the Danes on May 9.

{coyotes} NHL sets another attendance record, topping 23 million fans for the 1st time

banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

NEW YORK (AP) — The NHL has set another attendance record and surpassed 23 million fans for the first time.

The league on Friday reported an attendance figure of 23,014,458 over the 1,312-game regular season. That represents 96.9% capacity over 32 teams with the Montreal Canadiens making up the biggest share thanks to 41 home sellouts with crowds of more than 21,000.

It's the third consecutive time the 108-year-old NHL has broken attendance records after 22.4 million fans in 2022-23 and 22.9 million last season. That does not include the successful return of international competition: the 4 Nations Face-Off in Montreal and Boston, which drew an average of more than 19,000 fans a game.

Thirty-six venues hosted regular-season games, most notably Wrigley Field for the Winter Classic and Ohio Stadium in Columbus for the league's other outdoor game. The Stadium Series game in Columbus had the biggest crowd of the season, 94,571, the second-largest in NHL history.

{coyotes} Blues beat Utah 6-1 to lock up 2nd wild-card spot in the Western Conference playoffs

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

ST. LOUIS (AP) The St. Louis Blues secured the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference playoffs Tuesday night with a 6-1 victory over Utah.

Pavel Buchnevich had a goal and two assists, Jordan Kyrou scored twice and Jimmy Snuggerud, Brayden Schenn and Zack Bolduc each added a goal and an assist for the Blues. Robert Thomas contributed a pair of assists and Jordan Binnington made 22 saves for St. Louis, which will face the conference-leading Winnipeg Jets in the opening round of the playoffs.

The Blues were eight points out of a playoff spot at the break for the 4 Nations Tournament and used a 19-4-3 run to qualify for the postseason for the first time 2022.

Clayton Keller scored his 30th goal of the season and Karel Vejmelka made 23 saves for Utah.

The Blues scored four goals in the first period and never looked back. Schenn opened the scoring at 8:08 and was followed by goals from Buchnevich, Snuggerud and Bolduc.

Thomas left the game early in the third period with a lower-body injury and did not return.

Utah: Keller, who played in his 600th career game Monday, was born in the St. Louis suburb of Chesterfield. He has 13 goals and 22 assists in 32 career games against the Blues.

Blues: Snuggerud, a first-round pick in the 2022 entry draft, scored his first career goal and had his first multipoint game. His power play goal stood after an extensive review to determine whether he intentionally kicked the puck into the net.

Jake Neighbours gave the Blues an early spark in the first with a big hit on Utah's Kailer Yamamoto. Less than a minute later, a Buchnevich touch pass sprung Snuggerud on a breakaway that led to Schenn's goal.

The Blues won a franchise-record 12th straight home game, and Binnington earned a franchise-record 11th straight home win.

Utah's season is over with a record of 38-31-13. The Blues face Winnipeg in the playoffs with the date and time to be determined.

{coyotes} Keller has 2 goals, 2 assists as Utah beats Predators 7-3

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) Clayton Keller had two goals and two assists, and the Utah Hockey Club beat the Nashville Predators 7-3 on Monday night.

Logan Cooley had a goal and two assists, Michael Kesselring had a goal and an assist, and Nick Schmaltz, Nick Bjugstad and Kevin Stenlund also scored for Utah. Alexander Kerfoot had two assists and Matt Villalta finished with 27 saves to get his first career win in his second NHL start.

Ryan O'Reilly, Luke Evangelista and Michael Bunting scored for Nashville, and Juuse Saros had 29 saves.

O'Reilly gave the Predators a 1-0 lead 6:10 into the game as he got the puck in the right circle, skated up and fired it into the top right corner over Villalta's glove just as a power play was expiring. It was his 20th.

Kesselring tied it with 7:30 remaining in the first, and Bjugstad put Utah up 2-1 with 1:39 left in the period.

Cooley made it a two-goal lead with his third goal in four games at 3:03 of the second for his 25th, and Schmaltz made it 4-1 just 1:10 later.

Evangelista scored on a rebound with just under 9 minutes left in the second, and Bunting knocked in the rebound of Matthew Wood's hard shot that hit off the right post and fell behind Villalta in the crease with 5:40 remaining in the period to pull the Predators within one.

Keller, playing in his 600th game, scored with 7:55 left to give Utah some cushion, and then added an empty-netter for his 29th with 1:47 remaining. Stenlund capped the scoring in the final minute.

Utah: Utah is 6-1-1 over its last eight games and will finish the season no more than seven points out of a playoff spot.

Predators: Nashville has lost eight of the last 10 - all the losses in regulation - and will likely finish nearly 30 points out of the playoffs.

Schmaltz's power-play goal made it 4-1 at 4:13 of the second period. It was Schmaltz's 20th goal of the season.

Keller reached 60 assists for the first time. His previous career high was 49 assists during the 2022-23 season.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Filip Forsberg beat Karel Vejmelka with a backhander for the lone shootout goal in the Nashville Predators' 4-3 victory over the Utah Hockey Club on Thursday night.

Forsberg, Nick Blankenburg and Ryan O'Reilly scored in regulation, and Juuse Saros made 39 saves and turned aside all three Utah attempts in the tiebreaker.

Nick Bjugstad, Josh Doan and Dylan Guenther scored for Utah - eliminated from playoff contention Wednesday night - in its home finale in its first season in Salt Lake City. Vejmelka stopped 28 shots.

Utah failed to score on an overtime power play after Fedor Svechkov was sent off for hooking Mikhail Sergachev midway through the extra period.

Guenther tied it at 3 with at 5:42 of the third period with his 27th goal of the season.

Nashville scored power-play goals late in the second and early in the third to tie it. With Utah's Logan Cooley off for tripping, Blankenburg pulled the Predators within one with a long wrist shot with 3:39 to go in the second.

Forsberg then drew a hooking penalty on Sean Durzi with a second left in the period, and tied it with his team-leading 31st at 1:19 of the third. O'Reilly gave Nashville a 3-2 lead at 3:17 with the Predators' third goal in a 5:56 span.

The teams will meet again Monday night in Nashville.

Predators: Nashville is 14th in the Western Conference at 29-42-8.

Utah: Utah finished 18-15-8 at home. It is 11th in the West at 36-30-13.

{coyotes} Utah Hockey Club’s future trending in a positive direction after first NHL season in Salt Lake City

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Reaching the NHL playoffs is a long shot for the Utah Hockey Club in its inaugural season in Salt Lake City.

Beyond Year 1, though, things are trending upward for the franchise.

Utah has plenty of draft picks over the next three years and has $21.5 million in projected cap space for the next season. Many key contributors are signed to long-term, team friendly deals. Starting goaltender Karel Vejmelka signed a five-year deal in March to stay.

Fan support has also been consistently robust throughout Utah's first season with hockey-capacity sellouts of 11,131 unobstructed seats for all regular-season home games.

"Everyone sees where we are from a roster standpoint: the youth that we have, the future that's ahead of us and then the intrigue of this market," Utah owner Ryan Smith said. "Honestly, the way the community has rallied behind everything that we're doing, it's super powerful."

Smith faced a major challenge when he bought the Arizona Coyotes roughly a year ago and moved players and front office personnel to Salt Lake City with no previous hockey infrastructure in place. The Utah Olympic Oval from the 2002 Games, primarily a speedskating venue, had to be converted into a temporary practice facility and Delta Center, home of the NBA's Jazz, was primarily designed for basketball and not built for hockey.

The quick fixes even extended to what to call the team. Utah Hockey Club was designated as a placeholder name for the franchise while fans voted on a permanent team name that will be rolled out ahead of the 2025-26 regular-season opener.

Still, the season played out on the ice and behind the scenes how Smith hoped.

"It was pretty daunting a year ago ... walking into a room and then not knowing what to say to the guys besides: 'Trust us. It's going to be OK,'" Smith said. "I think people do good with change in life. I think uncertainty is really hard for people, and that was probably one of the more uncertain moments."

Utah quickly won over many new fans with an energetic and physical brand of hockey. While making a late playoff push, Utah has scored 21 goals over its past five games while allowing only nine.

Utah is not likely going to wrestle the final wild-card spot in the Western Conference from Minnesota. Still, the team's late-season form of play bodes well for its ability to be competitive beyond April in future seasons.

"That's what you want to raise, that's what you want to be as a team … a team who will never quit," Utah coach Andre Tourigny said after a victory over Calgary on April 1. "There's no quitting in that room. There's no quitting in those players."

Smith is quickly building up infrastructure that the team lacked when he purchased the team.

Utah will open a new, 115,780 square-foot practice facility in the southern suburb of Sandy in September. It will house two NHL-sized ice sheets and serve as the team's official headquarters. Training, medical, and dining facilities, offices, and a locker room will also be part of the facility.

Utah's practice facility will also be open for public use starting in January 2026.

"This is the place where we're going to inspire the next generation of kids in Utah to play the game of hockey," Utah president of hockey operations Chris Armstrong said. "And this is where we're going to put down all the habits and the identity of this team for the future as we pursue a Stanley Cup for Utah."

Delta Center will be remodeled within the next three years to improve sightlines for hockey games and bring the arena up to NHL standards. It will also serve as the anchor of a new $1.8 billion sports and entertainment district in downtown Salt Lake City.

"This is the next step," Smith said. "There's a lot more. The arena remodel and everything else that's coming around there, it's all just part of a big puzzle that we got to go put together."

Smith is trying to grow hockey in Utah by funding the construction of up to 20 new community rinks. Through Smith Entertainment Group, he plans to donate up to $500,000 per rink to help build out the sport across the state.
