{coyotes} Mammoth rebuilding project puts Utah in playoffs in team’s second season since moving from Arizona

Utah’s rebuilding process began in the Arizona desert, where the team was known as the Coyotes and progress was incremental.

In the first year after a move to Salt Lake City, the team became the Utah Hockey Club and took a bigger step, winning eight more games than the previous season to inch closer to the NHL playoffs.

Now known as the Mammoth, the young players who served as the rebuild foundation have developed into a skilled, cohesive unit that’s reached the postseason for the first time in six years.

“The guys are getting older, more mature, and they learn from what happens,” Mammoth coach AndrĂ© Tourigny said after his team’s playoff-clinching 4-1 win over Nashville on Thursday night. “The GM does a great job to improve the team every year. It’s easy now to look back and see we started from scratch. It’s a privilege when you start the process where you start. It’s not every time you have that much runway, so I feel fortunate and try to keep improving every year for the next.”

The win over Nashville put Utah (42-30-6) in the top Western Conference playoff wild-card spot, six points ahead of the Predators. The Mammoth are the third team in 45 years to make the playoffs in the first two seasons as a franchise — with Vegas and Seattle — but did it with a foundation of players who played in Arizona before the team moved.

The Mammoth already have four more wins than last season and their 90 points is two more than last season, which had been highest since 2013-14. Utah has won five straight, eight of its last 11 and are 21-14-3 at home.

That puts the Mammoth in the postseason for the first time since the 2020 NHL playoff bubble — then as the Coyotes — and second since reaching the 2012 Western Conference finals.

“It’s a step in the right direction,” Utah captain and leading scorer Clayton Keller said. “A lot of us haven’t played in the playoffs in a while and we want to taste that. You want to play against the best teams and see what it’s all about.”

They’ve done it with superb goaltending and balanced scoring.

Karel Vejmelka has been solid since joining the Coyotes in 2021, superb this season.

The 29-year-old has a career-high 36 wins, 10 more than his previous best and second only to Tampa Bay’s Andrei Vasilevskiy’s 37 in the NHL. Vejmelka’s 36 wins also are the most by a Czech goaltender since Dominik Hasek’s 38 in 2006-07 and he had a career-best eight-game win streak (8-0-0) in January.

The offense has been a nice change for a franchise that’s long lacked in that aspect.

Utah is 10th in the NHL at 3.31 goals per game and scored at least six goals in four straight games, eight of the last 10, before putting up four against Nashville. The Mammoth have six players with at least 20 goals, matching Vegas and Colorado for most in the NHL.

Keller has been his usual steady self. The four-time NHL All-Star leads the team with 80 points — his fourth straight 70-point season — and 54 assists, and is third with 26 goals.

Dylan Guenther has continued to get better in his fourth NHL season, setting career highs with 38 goals and 69 points.

Mikhail Sergachev has been a superb two-way defenseman since joining the Mammoth prior to the 2024-25 season and is fourth on the team this year with 56 points, including 46 assists.

Then there’s Nick Schmaltz.

The 30-year-old has been one of the NHL’s best under-the-radar skilled players and has peaked this season, his eighth with the Mammoth.

Schmaltz is an elite defensive forward, but also creative with the puck and his movement. He’s having a career year, reaching 30 goals and 70 points — both second on the team — for the first time in 10 NHL seasons.

“He’s just go gifted; fast, skilled, thinks the game such a high level, has such a good stick,” Keller said. “There’s so many things about his game that people don’t recognize or truly appreciate as much as all of us do in this room, just how good he is.”

Same could be said for the Mammoth, who now get to show the rest of the hockey world in this year’s playoffs.

Lucky Strike AMF

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Dylan Guenther scored his 39th goal of the season, Clayton Keller had three assists to reach 56 and the Utah Mammoth beat the Nashville Predators 4-1 on Thursday night for their fifth straight victory.

Utah (42-30-6), which has won seven of 10, can clinch the franchise's first playoff berth in its second season if the Anaheim Ducks beat the San Jose Sharks later Thursday. The Mammoth sit in the first Western Conference wild card spot with 90 points and have a six-point lead over Nashville.

Kailer Yamamoto, Nick Schmaltz and captain Lawson Crouse also scored for Utah, and Karel Vejmelka stopped 29 shots.

Erik Haula had Carolina's goal and Juuse Saros made 23 saves.

Yamamoto, who only played 12 NHL games last season, scored his 12th goal to open the scoring with 5:33 to go in the first period. He deflected in a puck off a cross-crease pass from Guenther for his second goal in the last three games.

Schmaltz scored his 31st goal - and fifth in his last five games - on a power play 5:35 into the second for a 2-0 lead. Keller slid the puck across the crease to Schmaltz at the back door.

Crouse, who had 20 points all of last season, scored his 22nd goal early in the third for a 3-0 lead.

Guenther's goal made it six straight games Utah has scored at least four times.

Haula scored on the power play for Nashville midway through the third after Vejmelka stopped the first 22 shots he faced.

Nashville defenseman Roman Josi was a late scratch after participating in warmups with an upper-body injury.

Nashville, which wrapped up its final trip of the regular season, returns home for three more games and will host the Minnesota Wild on Saturday.

Utah wraps a three-game homestand on Saturday against the Carolina Hurricanes.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Clayton Keller scored on a power play 33 seconds into overtime to lift the Utah Mammoth to a 6-5 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday night.

Alexander Kerfoot forced overtime with 7:04 left in regulation after tapping in a long feed from Sean Durzi, setting the stage for Utah to claim its first win over Edmonton.

Nick Schmaltz scored twice in the second period to rally the Mammoth from a two-goal deficit. JJ Peterka and Logan Cooley also scored, and Karel Vejmelka had 21 saves.

Curtis Lazar, Connor McDavid, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Vasily Podkolzin, and Colton Dach scored for the Oilers, who lost their second straight. Tristan Jarry made 25 stops.

Utah opened the scoring in the first when Peterka converted a feed from Ian Cole at the 1:53 mark. Edmonton then scored three straight in the period. Lazar beat two defenders and slid the puck underneath Vejmelka with a well-timed backhand shot for an equalizer 11 seconds after Peterka.

McDavid put the Oilers ahead at the 8:56 mark when scored on the power play. Nugent-Hopkins extended the lead with 5:17 left in the first.

Utah scored three times in the second period with two goals by Schmaltz and another by Cooley. Podkolzin scored at 16:06 and the teams were tied at 4 after two periods.

Dach collected the puck off a blocked shot and scored a second-chance goal to give Edmonton a 5-4 lead at the 2:10 mark of the third period.

Oilers: At San Jose on Wednesday.

Mammoth: Host Nashville on Thursday.

{coyotes} A playoff salary cap is coming to the NHL. GMs get a calculator to help them navigate it

This image provided by the NHL shows a playoff cap calculator that was added to the SAP-NHL Front Office App that general managers and other executives use. (NHL via AP)

HerbsPro

NEW YORK (AP) — Gone are the days of NHL teams stashing players on long-term injured reserve through the end of the regular season and dressing them at the start of the playoffs.

Starting this spring, the lineup for each game must fit under the salary cap, which until now did not apply in the postseason. As part of the adjustment, the league added a playoff cap calculator to the SAP-NHL Front Office App that general managers and other executives have been using for more than a year.

"Once we were going to cap-compliant rosters for playoff games, we needed something that would enable us to do it in real time," Commissioner Gary Bettman told The Associated Press. "It was an issue that a lot of people were concerned about. I'm glad we were able to solve it conceptually, and I'm glad that SAP and Central Registry were able to create a tool that made it realistic for teams to comply with this in real time."

The rule change was part of the collective bargaining agreement reached with the players union last summer. It comes after years of complaints about the LTIR loophole, which helped numerous teams load up at the trade deadline and go on deep playoff runs and even win the Stanley Cup.

Dougie Hamilton infamously said after he and Carolina got eliminated by Tampa Bay in the second round in 2021, "We lost to a team that's $18 million over the cap."

Under the terms of the CBA, teams don't have to have their entire playoff roster under the cap ceiling, but annual salaries of the skaters and goaltenders dressed for each game cannot exceed $95.5 million.

The projector planning tool, which the AP was given a demonstration of, allows users to mix and match lineups to see if they're cap-compliant. The Edmonton Oilers, for example, will need to fix Leon Draisaitl's $14 million cap hit when the star forward is back from the injury that is sidelining him for the rest of the regular season.

"You do it and it tells you if it doesn't work, and it lets you pick and choose and substitution," Bettman said. "It's absolutely ingenious."

Initially introduced for iPads, the app has been accessible on iPhones since December. The playoff cap calculator publicly unveiled by the league on Tuesday has been available since early February, just before the roster freeze prior to the Olympic break, and NHL VP of Digital Business Development Chris Foster said usage has increased significantly across all 32 teams.

"Introducing on iPhone, the playoff cap projector — those weren't in our original timelines," Foster said, acknowledging the scenario-building was first considered a trading and free agency tool before the CBA changes came about. "We quickly shifted. It's a credit to our Central Registry group. They flagged right away this is going to be needed, and we knew it was coming before the teams really knew about it, so it was their leadership that helped drive this change in the roadmap."

Daniel Beringer, SAP's Global Head of Technology and Innovation and Global Sponsorships, said the giant task of importing contract data took a lot of time putting in digital form what used to be in paper binders, but once that was completed, it is now faster to make additions on the fly.

"I would argue if the commissioner would ask for an app for his new Apple Watch, he could get that in a week or two now," Beringer said. "It's getting easier and easier to have additional functionality."

LOS ANGELES (AP) Alexander Kerfoot and Logan Cooley scored two goals each, Mikhail Sergachev tied a franchise single-game record with four assists, and the Utah Mammoth beat the Los Angeles Kings 6-2 on Saturday night.

Nick Schmaltz and Jack McBain also scored, Karel Vejmelka made 29 saves, as the Mammoth avoided a second losing streak of at least three games in March.

Anze Kopitar and Adrian Kempe scored for the Kings, who have won one of their last six games. Darcy Kuemper allowed five goals on 16 shots before being replaced by Anton Forsberg to start the third period. Forsberg made 11 saves in relief.

The Mammoth continued their charge toward a playoff berth when Kerfoot opened the scoring 2:31 into the game, followed by two goals from Cooley late in the first period. Cooley struck on the power play to pick up his second with less than nine seconds remaining, canceling out any momentum Los Angeles had when Kopitar got them on the board two minutes earlier.

Utah is now five points ahead of Nashville for the first wild-card berth in the Western Conference, which would put them against the Pacific Division in the postseason and away from the Central Division powerhouse trio of Colorado, Dallas and Minnesota.

The Kings started a critical seven-game homestand with a chance to move into the second wild-card spot ahead of the Predators - a team they face twice next week - but instead face planted with a dismal showing.

Special teams was particularly dire for Los Angeles, giving up two goals on the penalty kill plus an even-strength tally to Kerfoot shortly after its own power play expired midway through the second period.

Mammoth: Visit Seattle on Thursday night.

Kings: Host St. Louis on Wednesday night.
