TASCHEN

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) Jordan Staal's goal with 29.4 seconds left gave the Carolina Hurricanes three goals in the final two minutes for a 5-4 victory over the Utah Mammoth on Thursday night.

The Hurricanes became the first NHL team in more than 30 years and third overall to rally from two goals down in the last two minutes to win in regulation. The others were the Dallas Stars against the Boston Bruins on Oct. 14, 1995, and the Montreal Maroons against the New York Rangers on March 15, 1932.

Andrei Svechnikov and Shayne Gostisbehere each had two goals and an assist for the Hurricanes, who stretched their points streak to six games. Brandon Bussi stopped 21 shots to become the first NHL goalie with 20 wins in his first 24 games.

Utah's Kailer Yamamoto scored two goals for the first time in more than two years and added an assist. JJ Peterka and Michael Carcone also scored for the Mammoth, who concluded a 2-2-0 trip in their last road game until March. Jack McBain had two assists and Karel Vejmelka made 27 saves.

Svechnikov scored on a power play with the goalie pulled with 1:59 left, giving him eight goals in a six-game stretch. Just 32 seconds later, Gostisbehere, who had missed the previous five games with an injury, got the Hurricanes even.

The Mammoth lost for the second time in eight games.

Peterka responded 19 seconds after Carolina's second-period goal and the Mammoth led until the final minutes.

Svechnikov opened the scoring 3:04 into the game.

Yamamoto's second goal of the trip, after getting scratched for four games, came 4:10 into the second. He gave the Mammoth the lead for the first time at 8:24 of the second by sending a rebound into an open net.

The Hurricanes converted on their third power-play opportunity of the second period when Gostisbehere blasted a shot from inside the blue line.

Vejmelka has lost two games in a row for the first time since Dec. 8-10.

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) Mikhail Sergachev scored in the third period to put Utah ahead to stay, and the Utah Mammoth held on for a 4-3 win over the Florida Panthers on Tuesday night.

Nick Schmaltz, Sean Durzi and Barrett Hayton also scored goals for the Mammoth, who have won nine of their last 11 games and played without top goal-scorer Dylan Guenther, who has a lower-body injury. Vitek Vanecek made 25 saves and Durzi also had an assist.

Sandis Vilmanis, Cole Schwindt and Carter Verhaeghe scored goals and Sergei Bobrovsky made 16 saves for Florida, which had a three-game winning streak snapped.

Sergachev's goal with 8:55 to play gave Utah a 3-2 lead and Hayton made it 4-2 with an empty-netter with 56 seconds to play. Verhaeghe scored with 16 seconds left to pull the Panthers within 4-3, setting up a frantic final few seconds.

Schmaltz scored an unassisted short-handed goal with 4:14 to play in the first period when he picked up a loose puck just inside his own blue line, skated in alone and backhanded it past Bobrovsky.

The second short-handed goal of Schmaltz's NHL career (the first was on March 26, 2024, against Columbus) gives him 15 points in his last 14 games (7 goals, 8 assists).

Vilmanis' goal 2:52 into the second was the first of his NHL career and tied it at 1-1. The team's fifth-round draft choice in 2022 was playing in his ninth NHL game.

The Panthers went scoreless on the power play in four chances.

Florida's A.J. Greer played in his 300th career game

Mammoth: Play at Carolina on Thursday night in the final game of a four-game road trip.

Panthers: Visit St. Louis on Thursday night.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) Andrei Vasilevskiy made 28 saves for his second shutout of the season and 42nd of his career, Darren Raddysh scored on a power play late in the second period, and the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Utah Mammoth 2-0 on Monday night.

Brandon Hagel added a power-play goal in the final minute for the Lightning, who have won 15 of 17 and swept the season series against Utah. Tampa Bay moved atop the Eastern Conference standings with 70 points, one ahead of Carolina and Detroit.

Vasilevskiy, who leads the league in goals-against average, improved to 2-0-0 against the Mammoth, both shutouts. He blanked them last season, the inaugural campaign for the Utah franchise.

Raddysh took a feed from Nikita Kucherov and one-timed it above the shoulder of Karel Vejmelka for a 1-0 lead with 2:22 left in the second.

Vejmelka made 25 saves for Utah, which lost in regulation for only the second time in its past 12 games.

Kucherov's assist was his team-best 53rd of the season. He ranks third in the NHL in points with 79 and is second in assists.

Hagel's goal was his 26th, matching Kucherov for the team lead.

Tampa Bay's Nick Paul dropped the gloves with Utah's Ian Cole after Cole put a big hit on rookie Dominic James along the boards early in the second period. Paul and Cole each received 5-minute penalties for the fight.

Mammoth: Stay in Florida and visit the Panthers on Tuesday night.

Lightning: Host Winnipeg on Thursday night.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) Kailer Yamamoto had a goal and an assist and the Utah Mammoth extended their winning streak to five games with a 5-2 victory over the Nashville Predators on Saturday.

Clayton Keller, Michael Carcone, Barrett Hayton and JJ Peterka also scored, Mikhail Sergachev had three assists and Karel Vejmelka made 27 saves for Utah.

Steven Stamkos and Jonathan Marchessault scored and Juuse Saros made 26 saves for the Predators, who have lost three of four.

Stamkos scored the game's first goal at 3:43 of the opening period.

With the Predators on a power play, Roman Josi sent a pass from the slot to Stamkos at the left faceoff dot, where he beat Vejmelka with a one-timer.

Stamkos, who had a hat trick Thursday, has four goals in two games. He has eight power-play goals on the season to lead Nashville.

Early in the second period, Keller beat Saros with a wrist shot to tie the game at 1-1.

Keller has points in four consecutive games. He has three goals and four assists over that span.

Two minutes later, Carcone drove down the left wall before beating Saros high to the short side with a wrist shot.

Yamamoto scored on a deflection at 8:10 of the second to give the Mammoth a 3-1 lead.

Marchessault drew Nashville within 3-2 with 3:21 remaining in the second.

Hayton scored a power-play goal at 11:02 of the third and Peterka was awarded a goal with 1:32 remaining when he was pulled down from behind on a breakaway with Saros pulled for an extra attacker.

The game's opening faceoff was moved up two hours to 12:30 p.m. local time because of the winter storm moving through the area and much of the rest of the country. The Predators announced that there were 6,159 fans at the game.

Utah visits Tampa Bay on Monday.

Predators at Boston on Tuesday.

{coyotes} Utah Mammoth to host 2027 Winter Classic

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

When I think of Utah's football stadium, I think of Alex Smith. Next January, will the former star quarterback be there?

"What you're going to see," answered Mammoth owner Ryan Smith, "is a majestic mountain backdrop that you can't un-see."

"Even before we closed the deal on the team, I had seen the outdoor game. I said, 'Even if you can't give us a team, let's do an event there. Let's do the outdoor game.'"

Smith got both. The Winter Classic is headed to the Beehive State in 2027 — a massive victory for a franchise in its second NHL season.

"The speed with which they have accomplished things is breathtaking," NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said. "You remember, we announced the (move from Arizona) in April (2024). It closed in June. They were up and running. September, the players were in for training camp. They managed to put together a temporary training facility. They then in the year built the training facility that you yourself quoted people as saying was spectacular. They designed it and built it in a year. They've retrofitted half of the arena and the fans have been engaged and connected in ways that are just spectacular. Everything they've done has exceeded our expectations, and our expectations were incredibly high to begin with."

"It's been less than two years since (Smith and wife Ashley) bought the team and they've turned it into a major NHL market. The response has been incredible from the fans and they've earned the right."

"It's not only a celebration on the game it's also the celebration of a new beginning for an entire market," Smith said. "It's the 2034 Olympic opening ceremony venue."

"The amount of people I wouldn't have believed are hockey fans, who have turned into hockey fans is something that I shouldn't be surprised with at this point, but it's unbelievable to me. I'm driving out of the arena at night. It's 10:30 or 11 p.m., and I'm two blocks down and all I see are black Mammoth sweaters. Cooley and Sergachev and Keller and you can't un-see it. It is different than anything I've ever been a part of. It's just this wave that, whoa, two years ago, this didn't exist."

The date and time are not yet set, but it will be in the usual window. (Bettman did say that sunlight is a major factor, making sure it does not have negatively impact the ice or the players' ability to see.) Colorado is the opposition. Vegas also made sense, but it's believed the Golden Knights will be Dallas's opponent in the Stars' 2027 outdoor game.

"We don't have an NFL team," Ryan Smith added, "But it's either the Raiders or the Broncos (on television in Utah). To have that natural rivalry come in…that's what makes it even greater. I mean, we've got, I don't know, six flights a day going into Denver. I hope they all come out, right? It's not a far drive. Whoever was in charge of that was smart, because I think it's gonna be, it's going to be a really cool thing that I think a lot of people in two states look forward to."
