{coyotes} Quintal to lead NHL Department of Player Safety

Wal-Mart.com USA, LLC
The Fault in Our Stars / Divergent / The Descendants

The National Hockey League announced today that Stephane Quintal has been named Senior Vice President of Player Safety.

Quintal had been serving in that role on an interim basis since April 11, 2014, when Brendan Shanahan left his position as Senior Vice President of Player Safety to become the President of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Following an extensive evaluation process that included interviews with many qualified candidates, it was determined that the goals and objectives of the Department of Player Safety would be served best under Quintal's continued leadership.

"Stephane Quintal has been dedicated to the mission of the Department of Player Safety since its creation for the opening of the 2011-12 season and has demonstrated over the last several months that he is uniquely suited to lead the department going forward," NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said. "Brendan Shanahan established and built a highly-functioning and well-run department in his three years at its helm. Among his most important decisions was hiring Stephane Quintal to be part of his supervisory team.

"Tasked with running the department last spring during the most intensely-competitive and closely-scrutinized part of our season – the final regular-season weekend and the entire Stanley Cup Playoffs – Stephane proved that he clearly was up to the challenge. I am confident that he is the right man for the job."

An all-around defenseman during his 16 NHL seasons with the Boston Bruins, St. Louis Blues, Winnipeg Jets, Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers and Chicago Blackhawks, Quintal was Boston's first-round selection (14th overall) in the 1987 NHL Entry Draft. The native of Boucherville, Que., appeared in 1,037 NHL games, scoring 63 goals with 180 assists while compiling 1,320 penalty minutes.

For nearly 50 years the London Knights have been a standard-bearer in Ontario junior hockey, grooming a list of future greats that includes Darryl Sittler, Brendan Shanahan, Rick Nash, Corey Perry and Patrick Kane. But none of those NHL stars accomplished in London what the most recent graduating class did with the Knights.

Playing for coach Dale Hunter, the most recent group enjoyed a three-year run that few squads can match, winning back-to-back Ontario Hockey League championships in 2012 and 2013 and participating in three consecutive Memorial Cup tournaments. Now the players constituting the core of that team are ready to make their mark against each other in the NHL.

"Our core group has been very close the last three years," said center Max Domi, who will attempt to make the Arizona Coyotes roster this fall. "We always talk about one day playing against each other in the big leagues. But there's still a lot of work to do."

A Coyotes 2013 first-round pick (No. 12), Domi led London in scoring each of the past two seasons. He got a taste of the NHL last season when he played in some preseason games, including one against the Vancouver Canucks and their own 2013 first-round pick (No. 9), Knights teammate and good friend Bo Horvat.

"Last year was the first stepping stone with the exhibition game against Bo," Domi said. "The whole warmup I remember looking across and just laughing the entire time. It's pretty cool. It was a pretty special moment for both of us."

Horvat has a similar recollection of that game.

"It was definitely really weird," he said. "Max and I couldn't stop laughing at each other."

If they continue in their progression they may have to get used to facing off in the NHL. In fact, there could be a few familiar faces from those dominant Knights teams arriving in the League soon.

London's captain last season, center Chris Tierney, is a 2012 second-round pick (No. 55) of the San Jose Sharks and right wing Josh Anderson is a 2012 fourth-round pick (No. 95) of the Columbus Blue Jackets. Twin forwards Matt and Ryan Rupert are veterans of the Toronto Maple Leafs' recent development camps and Ryan, Toronto's sixth-round pick in 2012 (No. 157), signed an entry-level contract with the Maple Leafs in April. Defenseman Nikita Zadorov, a 2013 first-round pick (No. 16) by the Buffalo Sabres was a key contributor the past two seasons, as was goaltender Anthony Stolarz, a 2012 second-round pick by the Philadelphia Flyers (No. 45).

"It was a really great time. It couldn't have been a better three years. It's three years I'll never forget," Horvat said. "We had a bond right from the beginning. We all hung out together. We were like brothers there. We pretty much did everything together. We had a really tight-knit group, everybody hung out with everybody. I thought that was a huge part of our success."

And those teams certainly enjoyed plenty of success.

London led the OHL in points in 2011-12 and 2012-13, winning the OHL championship in each season. They finished third in the OHL standings last season and lost in the second round of the playoffs to the Guelph Storm, who won the OHL title and advanced to the championship game of the Memorial Cup, which London hosted.

As the host, London earned an automatic bid to the tournament, allowing the group one final run together.

"It was a long three years," said Horvat, who played 244 OHL regular-season and playoff games, plus Memorial Cup games, the previous three seasons. "Not a lot of guys can say they went to three Memorial Cups in three years. I've had pretty short summers. It's been a long three years but it's been a good three years and a great junior career."

The group's OHL success is what their tenure in London will be remembered for. But their hockey development was fuelled by more than just wins, especially on a proud club that encourages current and former players to routinely rub elbows.

The 2005 Memorial Cup championship, which featured Perry, Dave Bolland and Brandon Prust, still casts a long shadow. And the players from that team are too happy to trade stories with the new class.

"I was talking to a bunch of guys from the '05 team that won the Memorial Cup. They're still all best buddies with the guys from their junior team and they've played in the NHL for however many years," Domi said. "Those are the first guys they call come summertime. I'm sure for us it won't be much different. I'm looking forward to that. It's friendships we'll have for a lifetime."

How deep those London Knights roots go may have been on full display last season when Bolland missed more than four months after surgery to repair a severed tendon in his left ankle. He spent part of his recovery time in London working at the arena; the team announced it will retire his No. 91 Knights jersey Oct. 15.

"[John] Tavares came out for a little bit. Guys like [Drew] Doughty and Perry were on the ice a couple of years ago," Tierney said. "It's been awesome to watch those guys and see what they do, learn from them, ask them questions."

After enjoying so many moments together as teammates, the group is poised to splinter off at the next level. They'll just have to learn to stop laughing when they see each other on the opposing team's bench.

"It would be pretty cool playing against each other night in and night out," Tierney said. "I've been with those guys for a couple of years now, went through a couple of long playoff runs, a couple of championships. Hopefully we can all make it one day. That would be awesome."

{coyotes} Commissioner says NHL 'stronger every season'

TimeLife.com

Nick & Knight / ESPN Fantasy Football / Yahoo Fantasy Football

NEW YORK -- Commissioner Gary Bettman discussed the financial state of the NHL among several topics Thursday at the Bloomberg Sports Business Summit.

Bettman, while being interviewed by Bloomberg's Tom Keene, praised the League's competitive balance as a key component of increased success in several areas.

"Over the last decade now, we've gotten stronger every season," Commissioner Bettman said. "As [Tom] pointed out, last year may have been the strongest ever. The point is, why? It starts with the game. It starts with the way the game is being played, the skill, the speed, the competitive balance that we have that is perhaps maybe the best we've ever seen and the best in all of sports. Every team is in it in the regular season, most of the regular season.

"The playoffs are wildly unpredictable. How many games did we see where it turned around when a team was down by three goals? We had a series where a team came back after being down 3-0 in the series. That's a testament to how the game is being played and how exciting and entertaining it is. You combine that with the things we're doing around the game to build the business of the game: Attendance has never been better, ratings have never been better, and business has never been better."

Expansion was an extended topic during Commissioner Bettman's panel at the summit. He refuted a recent report that the NHL will expand by four teams, as well as the financial figures involved.

"Nothing has changed on that front from any announcement we've made, which is we're not expanding and we're not relocating," Commissioner Bettman said. "The only thing that bothered me about the story was it said we're going to sell four teams for [$1.4 billion] and that's too low ... if we were going to do it all."

On the subject of geographical territory rights, Commissioner Bettman said there is no issue for the New York Islanders moving to Brooklyn because they will remain in their territory. He said any additional teams in Canada would not alter the terms of the new television deal with Rogers, but would give the company more content.

Keene also asked about player dilution, and how adding teams and players to the League would work.

"We haven't thought about any of those things because we're not in expansion mode," Commissioner Bettman said. "We're getting lots of expressions of interest. All we're doing right now is listening."

Commissioner Bettman reiterated previous statements about being close to naming a successor to Brendan Shanahan as senior vice president of Player Safety, and he is hopeful of an announcement about the NHL's involvement in international hockey, including the return of the World Cup on a consistent basis, in the near future.

The Commissioner also was asked about topics dealing with game play, including goalie equipment and the number of goals being scored per game. After he told Keene there are about 5.5 goals per game, he asked the Commissioner if he'd like that number to be higher.

"A little higher than that would be nice, but it is not important," Commissioner Bettman said. "What is more important to that is the amount of lead changes we're seeing. Go back to when Tampa Bay played Calgary in the [2004] Stanley Cup Final, the last games played under the old system before the salary cap and the rule changes we did when we took the year off, and the team that scored the first goal in a Stanley Cup Playoff game was the team that won. We're seeing lead changes in the playoffs left and right, and that's what makes the game so entertaining."

{coyotes} Player Safety leader will be named before season

Microsoft Store

Nick & Knight / ESPN Fantasy Football / Yahoo Fantasy Football

BOUCHERVILLE, Quebec -- The NHL is close to hiring a new head of the Department of Player Safety, Commissioner Gary Bettman said Wednesday.

The NHL has been without a permanent lead disciplinarian since Brendan Shanahan left the League on April 11 to become president and alternate governor of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Stephane Quintal, who worked under Shanahan since November 2011, took over as head of player safety on an interim basis through the end of the 2014 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

"We're getting to the short strokes of that process," Commissioner Bettman said, speaking at a media event outside Montreal. "We've interviewed a lot of candidates, including somebody that's been doing it on an interim basis, and we will be making a decision shortly. We wanted to finish the process; [NHL deputy commissioner] Bill Daly and I each managed to take a little time off in August, but certainly well in advance of the start of the season we'll have an announcement."

The first game of the 2014-15 NHL season is Oct. 8; the preseason schedule begins Sept. 21.

Commissioner Bettman also addressed the progress in talks with the National Hockey League Players' Association regarding international play, more specifically reviving the World Cup of Hockey, which was last played in 2004.

"The Players' Association is our partner, and to the extent we haven't had any announcement yet is simply because we haven't been able to button down everything to our mutual satisfaction," Commissioner Bettman said. "Our hope is that at the appropriate time, we'll be able to talk about the opportunities internationally that we think events like the World Cup will have.

"We're constantly talking about this and other issues with the Players' Association. But as I said, we want to be in a position where we're doing this together."
