{coyotes} Coyotes hang on to defeat Maple Leafs

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- After the Arizona Coyotes ended their three-game losing streak in a high-scoring game against the Washington Capitals on Sunday, coach Dave Tippett was quick to point out the Coyotes wouldn't win many more games if their leaky defense continued to give up chances and goals.

The effort Tuesday against the Toronto Maple Leafs was much closer to what he has in mind, especially early.

Sam Gagner and Martin Erat each scored a first-period goal, and goalie Mike Smith made 28 saves to help the Coyotes hold on for a 3-2 win against the Maple Leafs.

Arizona limited Toronto to four shots on goal in the game's first 28 minutes.

"You give up two goals, you have a chance. You give up five …" Tippett said, referring to the Coyotes' 6-5 win against the Capitals. "Smitty was solid, we were moving our feet, and for the most part our 5-on-5 play was pretty good. There are a lot of positives in this game."

Antoine Vermette made it 3-0 at 6:34 of the second period for the Coyotes, who are 4-2-0 at Gila River Arena and put in one of their best 60-minute efforts of the season. The Maple Leafs pushed hard down the stretch, but they couldn't make it all the way back

"You play the right way and you deserve to win games, and we deserved to win," said Smith, who came into the game with a 2-6-0 record and an .873 save percentage. "We talked about what we need to do to give ourselves a chance to win. We did that for a more consistent time and we earned some bounces.

"We got the puck in deep and we held on to it. We didn't throw it away, and it turned into chances and goals. I hope we learned a lot from those. It shows drastically what we need to do."

Dion Phaneuf and Cody Franson scored power-play goals for Toronto, which saw its three-game winning streak come to an end. Phil Kessel had two assists, giving him 16 points in the first 12 games.

"When you have a start like that, it puts you behind the eight-ball, and we were playing catch-up all night, and it cost us," Phaneuf said. "When you don't start well and do the things that are necessary to start well, you have to push hard to come back."

James Reimer made 30 saves for the Maple Leafs, who had 26 shots in the final 32 minutes, including some chances to tie the game late.

"It was a turtle start. It was slower than slow," Toronto coach Randy Carlyle said. "It seemed like we were in neutral and they were in third gear and we were chasing."

Toronto did force the action early, and penalties 54 seconds apart by Brandon McMillan and Erat gave the Maple Leafs an extended 5-on-3 power play. But the Coyotes killed off the penalties without allowing a shot and didn't allow another for the rest of the period, a span of more than 12 minutes.

"It's hard to fathom we were so inept," Carlyle said of the power play. "We couldn't make two passes. We had a guy fall down twice on it. It's like 'What's going on out there?' And that's when you're helpless."

Meanwhile, the Arizona offense got going.

Lauri Korpikoski intercepted a pass by Toronto's Jake Gardiner behind the Maple Leafs net and slid a backhand centering pass to Gagner, who one-timed a shot over Reimer's shoulder to the short side at 10:29. It was the second goal in as many games for Gagner, who didn't have any in his first 10 games with Arizona.

Toronto is 5-0-0 when scoring first but 1-5-1 when surrendering the opening goal.

The Coyotes made it 2-0 at 15:35 on another hardworking play. Erat collected a Martin Hanzal pass, steamed behind the Toronto net and put a backhand shot off the skate of defenseman Stephane Robidas and by the helpless Reimer.

It was the fourth goal for Erat, who had three in 70 games with the Capitals and Coyotes last season.

It was more of the same early in the second period. Toronto had one shot in the first eight minutes, during which Arizona stretched its lead. Reimer stopped Vermette on the rush with a pad save, but Toronto forward James van Riemsdyk banked the puck off the end boards right to Vermette, who stuffed the puck behind Reimer at 6:34. It was Vermette's third goal, second in two games.

The Maple Leafs finally got on the board at 9:24, making the most of 17 seconds of 4-on-3 power play time. After Kessel gathered in a faceoff win, Tyler Bozak set up Phaneuf for a one-timer that Smith never saw thanks to van Riemsdyk's screen.

Phaneuf's first goal of the season gives him seven goals and 14 points in 24 career games against the Coyotes.

The Maple Leafs had 13 shots in the final 10 minutes of the period but didn't capitalize on the momentum they built. Smith made several good saves on the next Maple Leafs power play, stopping van Riemsdyk at one post and Bozak at the other on a rebound of a Gardiner shot.

Toronto did capitalize on Connor Murphy's slashing penalty in the third period to cut the deficit in half with another power-play goal. Smith made a pad save on Kessel, but van Riemsdyk slid the rebound neatly to Franson, who had half the net to put in his second goal.

"Those guys play a pretty tight system and they don't give you a whole bunch, so you have to capitalize on the chances you do get," Franson said. "You get down like that and you have to play more aggressive than you want. It's a regrettable game for us."

{coyotes} Coyotes stick with Rieder on top line vs. Leafs

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The Arizona Coyotes have been searching for some offensive spark all season. It turns out the pilot light might have been in the minor leagues all along.

Coach Dave Tippett's decision to have rookie Tobias Rieder start alongside Antoine Vermette and Shane Doan on the first line produced four goals in a 6-5 come-from-behind win Sunday against the Washington Capitals, and that trio will remain intact Tuesday when the Coyotes face the Toronto Maple Leafs at Gila River Arena.

Rieder, 21, made his first NHL goal a game-winner against Washington, scoring with 4:27 left in regulation. Doan and Vermette combined for three goals and six points in by far their most productive game of the season. That allowed the Coyotes to spread their offensive wealth a little bit and the slumping Mikkel Boedker responded with two assists while playing the right side for the first time this season with Lauri Korpikoski and Sam Gagne, who scored his first goal as a Coyote against the Capitals.

"He was a top player [with the Portland Pirates of the American Hockey League] in all situations and was playing against the best players. You could see he was playing well," Tippett said of Rieder. "He's a smart player and that shows. We put him right on the top line and he looked like a top player. He was sent down and he took it as another step that he needed to take to learn."

Rieder became the second Coyote to score a goal in his first NHL game in an eight-day span and both were huge. Justin Hodgman scored the game-tying goal late in a 2-1 overtime win against the Florida Panthers on Oct. 25. Hodgman was sent back to the Portland on Monday. Defenseman Brandon Gormley was recalled from Portland and will make his first appearance alongside Michael Stone against the Leafs.

Gormley played 22 games for the Coyotes last season but didn't have a strong training camp.

"My expectation was he was going to be part of our team, but for whatever reason he didn't have a great camp, He was battling some nagging injuries," Tippett said. "He went down, got himself healthy, played a handful of games and looks like the player we saw at the end of the season last year and he'll get an opportunity tonight."

"There's a lot to like about his game, but he doesn't have to feel like he has to make the NHL on his first two shifts. He just has to be a solid player, and he has the game and the mindset to do that."

Even with the win Sunday, Tippett is not happy with a defense that ranks 30th in the league in goals against and was still very shaky against the Capitals.

"I love scoring six goals, but the chances of scoring six every night are pretty slim," he said. "You'd better not give up five in this League. Until we start cleaning up that end we'll never be able to score enough."

Arizona will face a hot team Tuesday. Toronto has won three straight games, outscoring opponents 9-1 in even strength situations during the run. The Leafs needed 26 third-period saves from goalie James Reimer to pull out a 3-2 win Saturday against the Chicago Blackhawks.

Toronto did not skate Tuesday. The goalie is undecided but Jonathan Bernier, who has a 3-0-0 career record with a 1.15 goals-against average and a .967 save percentage against the Coyotes, would figure to get healthy consideration as the Leafs look for their third straight win against Arizona.

Here are the projected lineups:

{coyotes} Doan: My responsibility to win Cup with Coyotes

The Walking Dead Official Store

1989 - Taylor Swift / NCIS: Los Angeles / The Blacklist

Coach Dave Tippet says the team has looked sloppy, and general manager Don Maloney has threatened "change" if the team doesn't get better soon, but the captain of the Arizona Coyotes still sees promise in a group that is off to a disappointing 4-6-1 start.

Shane Doan is 38 years old and in his 19th NHL season with the same franchise that picked him in the first round of the 1995 draft, but he's never been to a Stanley Cup final. And his best shot — the Coyotes' 4-1 series loss to the eventual champion L.A. Kings in the 2012 Western Conference final — now seems like distant history.

The veteran admitted to Sportsnet's Brady & Walker Tuesday that he thinks about his NHL expiry date, but reassured listeners that he still believes in both his own level of play and Arizona's ability to turn things around.

"How long do you want to play? How long do you want to do this? Do you still enjoy it?" Doan said he asks himself. "I love the game. I've always joked that I'll play the game until I can't move anymore. It's just no one will be watching for the next 40 years after I'm done. I won't be playing in the NHL, but I'll be playing somewhere."

LISTEN: Coyotes captain Shane Doan talks Maple Leafs, Mike Smith, more

So even though the 400-goal milestone is just 43 red lamps away and he's won two gold medals with Canada at the World Championship, Doan still has his sights on the Cup.

"It's your dream. It's the reason why you play," said Doan, who is signed with Arizona through the 2015-16 season. "It feels like it's my responsibility to find a way to do it here. Obviously people can laugh at that and find that humourous. We haven't looked like one of the contenders in the last two years and this year so far, but at the same time, I really like our group, and I think Mike Smith is an unbelievable goalie. And that's the key.

"I'm really focusing on us, and I'm not even going to worry about what else could be going on."

The captain threw up three points in the Coyotes' come-from-behind, 6-5 victory over the Washington Capitals Sunday, snapping Arizona's three-game losing skid. But he says the team's 30th-ranked defence, which has averaged an ugly 3.73 goals against through 11 games, needs to tighten up.

"[Defence] has been our identity, that's been our calling card," he said. "In order for us to have any real success, that has to be a staple. That being said, when you're not doing it, you gotta find ways to score goals."

Doan and the Coyotes aim to shut down the Maple Leafs' offence Tuesday when they host Toronto at 9 p.m. ET in Glendale.

Season series: The Toronto Maple Leafs swept the two-game set against the Arizona Coyotes last season. Phil Kessel and Jake Gardiner each had a goal and an assist in Toronto's 4-2 win Jan. 20.

Maple Leafs team scope: Toronto will be seeking its fourth straight win Tuesday; the Maple Leafs made it three in a row with a 3-2 win against the Chicago Blackhawks at Air Canada Centre on Saturday. They've allowed three goals during the win streak. "The key has been balance, there's no doubt about it," coach Randy Carlyle told the Toronto Sun. The Maple Leafs recalled center Sam Carrick and defenseman Stuart Percy from the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League on Monday. Carrick made his NHL debut Saturday against the Chicago Blackhawks; Percy has three assists in seven games for the Maple Leafs this season.

Coyotes team scope: After losing the first three games on its four-game road trip, Arizona salvaged the final game with a 6-5 win at the Washington Capitals on Sunday. Forward Tobias Rieder became the eighth player in team history to score in his NHL debut. It was also the game-winner. "It was tough going to bed [Saturday night], I'm not going to lie," Rieder told the Coyotes website. "I think I haven't really realized it. This is a dream come true." Arizona recalled defenseman Brandon Gormley and assigned forward Justin Hodgman to the AHL's Portland Pirates on Monday. Gormley, 22, has three points in six games for Portland this season. He was the Coyotes' first-round pick (No. 13) at the 2010 NHL Draft.

{coyotes} Coyotes rally, end road trip with win vs. Capitals

GameStop, Inc.

1989 - Taylor Swift / NCIS / The Crazy Ones

WASHINGTON -- In the first three games of their four-game Eastern Conference road trip, the Arizona Coyotes inspired little confidence in their overall play.

With four goals in three regulation losses, the Coyotes entered their game against the Washington Capitals on Sunday at Verizon Center with the fewest points in the Western Conference.

Trailing 3-1 entering the second period with the possibility of a winless road trip looming, the Coyotes rallied by scoring five consecutive goals in a 6-5 victory.

"Just keep working. As simple as that," Arizona coach Dave Tippett said, recalling what he told his team during the first intermission. "We wanted to end the trip on a good note. Things hadn't gone our way and we wanted to just keep working and see what happened. … I like the way we played there, right from the start."

Antoine Vermette. Michael Stone, Shane Doan (two goals), Sam Gagner and Tobias Rieder scored for the Coyotes. Devan Dubnyk, who made his third start of the season, stopped 32 shots.

"They're up 3-1 and it was frustrating," Doan said. "But that second period, we just kept trying to do little things. Obviously, it's not the type of game we need to play, but it's a win and we need to build on it."

Tom Wilson, John Carlson, Alex Ovechkin, Joel Ward and Troy Brouwer scored for Washington, which has lost four in a row.

"We need to be better, period," Capitals defenseman Mike Green said. "We let a game slip away. Us as guys in this dressing room need to figure it out."

Ovechkin's goal was his first in six games, ending his longest drought since Nov. 12-23, 2011. With four points, Ovechkin tied Peter Bondra's franchise points record with 825. Nicklas Backstrom had three assists; it was his NHL-leading 27th three-assist game since his rookie season of 2007-08.

After starting the season 3-0-2, the Capitals have lost four straight and five of six (1-5-0).

"[Their] behavior has to change or we have to change people," Washington coach Barry Trotz said. "I mean it's plain and simple. Their ice time, look at different people in different situations. To me, it's absolutely unacceptable. They have to fix it. It's my job to fix the behavior. I don't like the behavior. If they're not going to fix it internally, individually, then I'll make sure I fix it."

The Coyotes entered the game with nine of their 22 goals this season on their sixth-ranked power play. With Evgeny Kuznetsov in the penalty box for holding Rieder, Vermette gave Arizona a 1-0 lead at 7:14, picking up the rebound of an Oliver Ekman-Larsson one-timer from the point.

Forty-nine seconds later, Wilson tied the game for Washington. Ovechkin hooked off near the left point and threw a puck toward the goal. Wilson, who boxed Ekman-Larsson out near the crease, deflected the shot over Dubnyk's glove for his first goal of the season.

Carlson put the Capitals ahead 2-1 at 9:49, working a give-and-go with Backstrom off an Arizona defensive-zone turnover created by Wilson. Ovechkin then padded Washington's lead at 16:09 with a patented one-timer on the power play from the left faceoff circle.

By the end of the period, the Coyotes had allowed 17 first-period goals on the season, the most in the League.

In the second period, the Capitals' lack of discipline gave the Coyotes three power-play opportunities, which allowed them to eventually tie the game. Stone's goal came one second after Karl Alzner's hooking penalty expired, but Stone fired the puck past Justin Peters (24 saves) from above the right circle before the Capitals defenseman could re-enter the play. Doan scored from in tight with 3.7 seconds remaining in the period.

"Our power play's been great all year," Doan said. "Our first three goals were pretty much on the power play, the second one was right when the guy stepped out of the box. For all intents and purposes, that's three power-play goals. We had to find a way to generate something 5-on-5, and that momentum the power play gives right before the period is huge."

Sloppy defensive-zone play led to each of Arizona's first two third-period goals, first by Gagner, whose short-side top-shelf goal at 3:05 was the result of a Washington turnover in the left corner. Doan scored his second at 4:33 when Ovechkin muffed a pass near the blue line.

"You always hear coaches talk about the blue lines and 10 feet inside the blue lines, a lot of chances to get pucks out," Capitals defenseman Brooks Orpik said. "There's a lot of good teams, good players in this League. If you don't execute those plays in this League, it usually comes back to haunt you. A lot of it is puck management. Mistakes are going to happen, but you'd like to identify those and not make the same mistake over and over."

Rieder, who made his NHL debut, scored on the rush at 15:33.

"I just wanted to go out there and do my job," Rieder said. "Do the little things right, and it turned out to be a great game."

The Capitals scored two late goals; Ward scored on the power play at 18:07 and Brouwer scored his fourth goal of the season with 27 seconds remaining.
