{coyotes} Top prospects for Arizona Coyotes

The Arizona Coyotes have struggled in recent seasons but have used high draft picks and moves at the NHL Trade Deadline to restock their farm system, creating one of the strongest in the League.

Forwards Max Domi, Anthony Duclair and Jordan Martinook and goalie Louis Domingue all played important roles as rookies last season. Forwards Dylan Strome and Christian Dvorak could do the same this season. The depth the Coyotes have also means Arizona likely will give extra time for defenseman Jakob Chychrun, the No. 16 pick in the 2016 NHL Draft, to develop.

Here are the Coyotes' top five prospects, according to NHL.com:

1. Dylan Strome, C

How acquired: Selected with No. 3 pick of 2015 NHL Draft

Last season: Erie (OHL): 56 GP, 37-74-111

Strome almost made the Arizona roster out of training camp last season, and another big season in the Ontario Hockey League did nothing but bolster the Coyotes' confidence in him. Strome, 19, was captain for Erie and overcame the disappointment of being sent back to junior by having his second consecutive 100-plus point season.

General manager John Chayka said Strome has filled out his 6-foot-3 frame (the Coyotes list him at his draft weight of 185 pounds) and worked hard to improve his skating, the one knock on his scouting report before Arizona selected him with the third pick in 2015.

"He's done everything we've asked," Chayka said. "Now he has to prove it in camp."

The Coyotes hope Strome will be their Max Domi of this season -- another player who stayed in junior for an extra season and hit the ground running in the NHL.

Projected NHL arrival: This season

Coyotes 30 in 30: Season outlook | Fantasy outlook | Burning questions, reasons for optimism

2. Christian Dvorak, LW

How acquired: Selected with No. 58 pick of 2014 NHL Draft

Last season: London (OHL): 59 GP, 52-69-121

Dvorak, 20, scored a tournament-best seven goals in four games as captain for Memorial Cup champion London after he was the team's leading scorer (121 points in 59 games) during the OHL regular season. Like Strome, his skill set, vision on the ice and hockey IQ have the Coyotes eager to see him in the NHL.

Arizona wants Dvorak (6-foot, 187) to play center.

Projected NHL arrival: This season

3. Christian Fischer, RW

How acquired: Selected with No. 32 pick of 2015 NHL Draft

Last season: Windsor (OHL): 66 GP, 40-50-90; Springfield (AHL): 6 GP, 2-1-3

If Dvorak was the most impressive at Coyotes development camp, Fischer was its biggest surprise. He could end up back with Windsor, in the American Hockey League, or on the NHL roster.

Fischer, 19, has a big body (6-2, 214) and looked sharp at development camp. The Chicago native also plays right wing, a position where the Coyotes need help.

"Sometimes, the biggest part of our job involves where we think the player is and where the player thinks he is," director of player development Steve Sullivan said. "There is usually some disconnect. With him, there is no disconnect. He is the one player that is right on cue."

Projected NHL arrival: This season

4. Jakob Chychrun, D

How acquired: Selected with No. 16 pick of 2016 NHL Draft

Last season: Sarnia (OHL): 62 GP, 11-38-49

The Coyotes spent the offseason rebuilding their defense, at the NHL and developmental level. After trading up to select Chychrun -- once regarded as a top-5 prospect -- at No. 16 in the draft, the 18-year-old jumped to the top of Arizona's development chart on defense.

The addition of defensemen Alex Goligoski and Luke Schenn should give Chychrun (6-2, 205) another year to develop, but he showed the size, skill and skating that have the Coyotes envisioning a player who will play plenty of minutes for years to come.

Projected NHL arrival: Next season

5. Brendan Perlini, LW

How acquired: Selected with No. 12 pick of 2014 NHL Draft

Last season: Niagara (OHL): 57 GP, 25-20-45

Once considered to be the Coyotes' top prospect, Perlini's scoring numbers haven't matched up with the skill set they feel he has over the past two seasons.

But Perlini (6-2, 212) remains Arizona's top prospect at left wing, and Chayka remains high on him. The 20-year-old likely will start the season in the AHL.

Projected NHL arrival: Next season

{coyotes} Reasons for optimism, questions facing Coyotes

The Arizona Coyotes were active during the offseason, trading for defenseman Alex Goligoski and Anthony DeAngelo, and signing defenseman Luke Schenn and forwards Jamie McGinn and Ryan White in free agency. They're hoping the new faces and the growth of young players, including Max Domi and Anthony Duclair, help them make the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2012.

The Coyotes are looking for a top-four defenseman for the right side and a right wing with goal-scoring ability, and may not be done dealing. Arizona has stockpiled assets at the NHL and prospect levels to use in a trade.

Here are four reasons for optimism entering this season:

1. A little help arrives for Oliver Ekman-Larsson

The Coyotes allowed 244 goals last season (28th in the League), so their top priority was to retool the defense around Ekman-Larsson, whose 55 points (21 goals, 34 assists) were seventh among NHL defensemen.

Goligoski, 31, signed a five-year, $27.375 million contract with Arizona on June 22, six days after he was acquired in a trade with the Dallas Stars. He'll likely be paired with Connor Murphy, who signed a six-year contract on July 28 after setting NHL career highs in goals (six), assists (11), points (17) and games played (78). Schenn, the No. 5 pick in the 2008 NHL Draft, signed a two-year, $2.5 million contract on July 23.

2. The maturation of the 'Killer Ds'

The Coyotes had their fingers crossed that Domi and Duclair were ready, and the rookies responded with a combined 38 goals and 96 points to give Arizona two young scorers to go with 39-year-old captain Shane Doan's 28-goal season.

Arizona wants to see Domi and Duclair take the next step in development. For Domi, that includes not only production but taking more of a leadership role. Each player also can help mentor the next wave of prospects on the way.

3. The even younger guns

With Domi and Duclair established, the Coyotes have room on the roster for more additions from their highly touted farm system.

Center Dylan Strome, the No. 3 pick in the 2015 draft, came close to making the Coyotes out of training camp last season and could find himself in a top-six role. Center Christian Dvorak, coming off a 121-point season and a Memorial Cup championship as captain for London of the Ontario Hockey League, also is expected to be NHL-ready after impressing in development camp.

4. Greater organizational commitment to winning

With a shoestring scouting budget and little commitment to player development during their cost-cutting days, the Coyotes paid the price at the NHL level with a four-year playoff drought.

But a new commitment to scouting includes a retooled department headed by former NHL forward Steve Sullivan, who played 33 games for the Coyotes in 2012-13, with several strong drafts yielding talent and optimism.

Here are three key questions facing the Coyotes:

1. What improvements will be made on right wing?

The Coyotes appear set on the left side with Domi, McGinn, Jordan Martinook and Tobias Rieder, a restricted free agent who remains unsigned. But the right side isn't as clear.

Behind Duclair, who played the right side much of last season, the Coyotes have Doan entering his 21st NHL season and question marks from there.

White can play there if needed, but the Coyotes want a right wing with scoring ability. Arizona may have interest in bringing back 35-year-old unrestricted free agent Radim Vrbata, who had 137 goals and 288 points in 428 games over six seasons (2007-08, 2009-14) with the Coyotes. They also could make a trade to fill the need.

2. Will Mike Smith stay healthy and play at a high level?

Smith was 38-18-10 with a 2.21 goals-against average and .930 save percentage in 67 starts during the 2011-12 season, and helped the Coyotes reach the Western Conference Final. In four seasons since, Smith has won an average of 18 games and hasn't had a GAA better than 2.58 (in 2012-13).

Now 34 and entering the fourth season of a six-year, $34 million contract, Smith remains the No. 1 goalie. Will the improvements around Smith allow him to regain form? Or are the Coyotes banking on a version of Smith that isn't coming back?

3. How will the center position shake out?

Antoine Vermette's contract was bought out by the Coyotes on Aug. 1, giving Strome and Dvorak each an opportunity to earn a roster spot. Martin Hanzal hasn't played more than 65 games since 2009-10 but when healthy is the best matchup option for big Pacific Division centers like Ryan Getzlaf (Anaheim Ducks), Anze Kopitar (Los Angeles Kings) and Joe Thornton (San Jose Sharks).

Brad Richardson had a strong season on the third line but is best suited to stay there.

{coyotes} Inside look at Arizona Coyotes

The Arizona Coyotes hired John Chayka as the youngest general manager in major league sports history, at 26 years old, on May 5.

At his introductory press conference, Chayka, now 27, vowed that the Coyotes would do everything they could to become a winner. They started by acquiring a top-four defenseman, Alex Goligoski, in a trade with the Dallas Stars on June 16, two weeks before he was to become an unrestricted free agent, then signed him to a five-year contract worth a reported $27.375 million.

Arizona acquired center Pavel Datsyuk (who signed in the Kontinental Hockey League) from the Detroit Red Wings in a trade at the 2016 NHL Draft on June 24 that allowed them to move up and select defenseman Jakob Chychrun with the No. 16 pick, their second selection in the first round after taking forward Clayton Keller at No. 7. The next day, the Coyotes traded a second-round pick (No. 37) to the Tampa Bay Lightning for defenseman Anthony DeAngelo, the No. 19 pick of the 2014 draft, fortifying their defensive depth.

Free agent left wing Jamie McGinn signed a three-year, $10 million contract with Arizona on July 1, and free agent defenseman Luke Schenn signed a two-year, $2.5 million contract on July 23.

Defensemen Connor Murphy and Michael Stone each agreed to a contract to remain with the Coyotes. Murphy signed for six years and $23.1 million. Stone, coming off major knee surgery, got a one-year, $4 million contract to avoid an arbitration hearing.

The Coyotes signed 39-year-old captain Shane Doan to a one-year, incentive-laden contract that could be worth $5 million. Doan has spent his entire 20-season NHL career with the franchise and is its leader in games played (1,466), goals (396) and points (945).

"I get asked often about the loyalty I feel towards this organization," Doan said July 12 after signing his contract. "I get asked why I've turned down other opportunities so that I can keep playing hockey in what some people characterize as not an ideal situation. I've already given plenty of examples of why I love it here, but on a basic level, my biggest reason for wanting to stick around all these years is simple: The organization drafted me to win a Stanley Cup, and I still plan to deliver on my end of the bargain."

The Coyotes likely aren't finished making moves this offseason and are hoping to add either a top-four or top-six defenseman before training camp.

"There are still lots of areas to improve," Chayka said. "We have a little logjam right now [on defense], but Michael Stone is injured to start the year [with an October return expected], and that creates a little flexibility."

The core of Arizona's defense is secure; Goligoski, Murphy and all-star Oliver Ekman-Larsson each is signed for at least the next three seasons. Ekman-Larsson was seventh among NHL defensemen in scoring last season with 55 points (21 goals, 34 assists) and is now surrounded by plenty of talent on the Coyotes' blue line.

"I think we are really strong defensively," Stone said. "I'm excited about the guys that we have. I'd love to play with a guy like Goligoski and be on that right side paired with him. I think he only makes the team better, and hopefully I can complement him. It's just a really exciting time for the whole back end."

Coach Dave Tippett, now also the executive vice president of hockey operations after signing a five-year contract, has more say in shaping the roster to fit his coaching style and vision. Arizona has more size on defense, quickness to defend in a faster game, and the ability to transition to offense with a strong first pass.

McGinn had 22 goals in 84 games with the Colorado Avalanche and Buffalo Sabres last season. He could be put on a line with center Brad Richardson, who is coming off an NHL career-best 31 points (11 goals, 20 assists), and Doan, who led the Coyotes with 28 goals.

The Coyotes bought out the final year of center Antoine Vermette's contract on Aug. 1, veteran defenseman Nicklas Grossmann and forwards Kyle Chipchura, Boyd Gordon, Steve Downie, and Alex Tanguay were not re-signed, and center Joe Vitale went to the Red Wings in the Datsyuk trade.

Some changes among the forwards will come from within. After rookies Max Domi and Anthony Duclair combined for 38 goals last season, the Coyotes would like to see two of their top forward prospects, Dylan Strome, the No. 3 pick in the 2015 draft, and Christian Dvorak, the No. 58 pick in the 2014 draft, have the same success.

After a second straight 100-plus point season with Erie of the Ontario Hockey League, Strome, 19, is on track to center one of the top two lines now that Vermette is gone. Dvorak, 20, also has an opportunity to land on the NHL roster after backing up an impressive Memorial Cup championship as captain of London of the OHL with a solid showing at Coyotes development camp.

Restricted free agent forward Tobias Rieder, who had 14 goals and 37 points in his second NHL season, remains unsigned. Rieder's agent said he could leave to play in the KHL, but Chayka hasn't budged on a player who had four goals in the final 40 games last season and was minus-21.

The Coyotes signed goaltender Louis Domingue to a two-year, $2.1 million contract after he was 15-18-5 with a 2.75 goals-against average and .912 save percentage as a rookie. He will be the fifth opening-night backup to veteran Mike Smith over the past five seasons. Smith, who is entering the fourth season of a six-year, $34 million contract, has struggled with injuries and inconsistency but remains the No. 1 goalie. He was 15-13-2 with a 2.63 GAA and .916 save percentage in 32 starts last season.

Varsity Troop Ham Radio operator request

I got a request from a local Varsity Scout leader looking for some hams to help out.

September 17th the troop will be participating in the On Target project. They climb to tops of peaks, use mirrors to signal other peaks.

I have another commitment, otherwise I would help out.

So here is a call out to all club members.

What you will be doing is a ton of simplex and repeater work on VHF and UHF. You will be the radio communications link between other mountains. They would like to have some demonstrations, get them on the air as well. This is one where there will be a ton of Third Party traffic transmitted, encouraging the youth to look at Ham Radio, maybe do some camping. There is a great chance of you even getting them on the air on HF.

I am not sure what mountain they will be heading to. Right now they are still in the planning phase. So you might have to do some hiking, or there might be a road right to the top.

If interested, please message us, I will then send your contact info to the Troop leader and have him reach out to you. This guy is a great guy, I have been friends with him for years now. This troop is a Mormon Troop, not that religion should be an issue, but for those of you who are Mormon, this might be a great time to step up and help out.

{coyotes} Source: Coyotes place Vermette on buyout waivers

The Arizona Coyotes parted ways with veteran centre Antoine Vermette to give themselves some more flexibility for next season.

The Coyotes bought out the final year of Vermette's contract on Monday, making the 34-year-old a free agent. Instead of counting $3.75 million against the salary cap, Vermette will count $1.25 million each of the next two seasons as Arizona looks to get younger.

"In order to give our team more flexibility, we needed to make this difficult decision," general manager John Chayka said. "This move will provide an opportunity for some of our young, talented players to step up. Antoine is a class act and we thank him for all he did on and off the ice for the Arizona Coyotes organization."

Vermette proved to be a valuable asset for the Coyotes at the 2015 trade deadline when they sent him to the Chicago Blackhawks for a first-round pick and defensive prospect Klas Dahlbeck. Vermette won the Stanley Cup with Chicago, and Arizona selected Nick Merkley to bulk up their prospect depth.

The Coyotes re-signed Vermette in the summer of 2015 to a $7.5 million, two-year deal. He had 17 goals and 21 assists in 76 games last season and will likely draw interest around the NHL at a reduced salary.

In 910 NHL games with Ottawa, Columbus, Chicago and Arizona, Vermette has 211 goals and 260 assists.

{coyotes} Strome feels 'done' with junior hockey

TORONTO — It was only five days before the start of last season that the Arizona Coyotes sent Dylan Strome back to the Erie Otters for another round of junior hockey.

Strome is hard set on avoiding a return trip this fall. The former No. 3 overall pick wants to be in the Coyotes opening night lineup this Oct. 15 and not squaring off against the London Knights in another OHL battle that evening.

"For myself personally I obviously feel like I'm done with junior and I don't want to be there next year," Strome said Sunday from a Hockey Canada development camp. "But at the same time, I obviously want to play in the NHL for a long time in my career and if Arizona thinks that's best for me next year then I don't really have a choice, that's obviously what I'm going to do."

Strome, the third overall pick of the 2015 draft, was among the final cuts for Arizona last fall. He was sent back to Erie, where he rung up 111 points in 56 games, finishing fourth in OHL scoring.

That was a slight dip from the 129-point campaign of his draft year, which led the league.

The 19-year-old centre didn't dispute the prospect of further development in junior hockey, but made no secret of his preference for next season. He also sought advice from fellow Canadian and Coyote Max Domi, who was sent back to the OHL for a fourth season in 2014, starring as a rookie for Arizona last season.

"It's not really up to me," Strome said of the decision. "I obviously felt like I could've been done (with junior hockey) last year. I made it to the last day of (NHL) camp and last cuts. Hopefully this year I can just try to make it a little farther and show what I can do in the exhibition games again. I think (the Coyotes) were pretty impressed with me last year and hopefully they like what they see again and I can get some games in this year."

Strome registered one point in five exhibition games last fall before the Coyotes opted to return him to junior hockey. He's hoping for the longest possible audition this fall, which would include nine regular season NHL games. Strome's entry-level contract would be exercised if he suited up in a 10th game.

A return to Erie would also likely mean another stint with Canada's world junior squad. Strome was a member of the Canadians' disappointing sixth-place entry last year in Finland. The tournament will start in Strome's hometown of Toronto on Dec. 23 and he was admittedly excited about potentially playing in the Air Canada Centre for the first time.

It's clear though that he would rather play there as a member of the Coyotes.

"You want to experience it," he said of the world juniors. "But at the same time your goal is to be in the NHL."
