{coyotes} Jets beat Coyotes 4-2 to earn home-ice in 1st round

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) Mark Scheifele and Kyle Connor each had a goal and an assist and the Winnipeg Jets beat the Arizona Coyotes 4-2 Saturday night to earn home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

Jacob Trouba and Nikolaj Ehlers also scored, and Blake Wheeler had his 71st assist for Winnipeg, which won just two of its last seven games (2-4-1) to give up a four-point lead in the Central Division. Nashville won earlier Saturday night to take its second straight division title, edging the Jets by one point.

Connor Hellebuyck stopped 19 shots as the Jets finished tied with St. Louis, but will have home-ice in the opening-round series due to a tiebreaker with more regulation/overtime wins.

Alex Galchenyuk and Brad Richardson scored for Arizona, and Calvin Pickard finished with 28 saves.

Scheifele scored his 38th goal to tie the score late in the first period, after Galchenyuk's 10tj had given the Coyotes a 1-0 lead 2:21 in.

Winnipeg then scored three times in the second to take control. Trouba put the Jets ahead for good with his eighth at 2:35, and Connor scored his 34th to make it 3-1 with 9:55 left in the period - just 2 seconds after a power play ended but before the Coyotes' fifth skater could get in the play. Ehlers gave Winnipeg a three-goal lead with 21st with 4:39 left.

Richardson capped the scoring with his 19th about 3 1/2 minutes into the third.

NOTES: Hellenbuyck played in 63 regular-season games, third in the league among goalies behind Minnesota's Devyn Dubnyk (67) and Montreal's Carey Price (66). ... Coyotes G Darcy Kuemper finished with a 2.33 goals-against average, the lowest among goalies who played at leasts 50 games. Kuemper and Tampa Bay's Andrei Vasilevskiy had a .925 save percentage, the highest among goalies with at least 50 games.

{coyotes} Coyotes see positive future despite disappointing present

LAS VEGAS -- The Arizona Coyotes have missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the seventh straight season. Only the Buffalo Sabres' eight-season drought is longer. But consider this:

Despite losing 377 man-games to injuries, the Coyotes were in the race until the last minute of the second period of their second-to-last game.

Not until the Colorado Avalanche ended regulation tied 2-2 with the Winnipeg Jets at Pepsi Center on Thursday was Arizona eliminated; the Coyotes had a 3-1 lead against the Vegas Golden Knights at T-Mobile Arena at the time. The Avalanche went on to win 3-2 in overtime; the Coyotes went on to win 4-1.

The Coyotes (39-34-8) have won 10 more games and gotten 16 more points in the standings than they did last season with one game left, against the Jets at Gila River Arena on Saturday (10 p.m. ET; NHLN, SN360, CITY, SNW, FS-A PLUS, NHL.TV).

"It stings," general manager John Chayka said. "But I'm a big believer you learn more from your failures than you do your successes.

"But at the same time, I don't consider this a failure. I think it's a ton of progress. I'm proud of this group. I have a lot of respect for this group. They did a lot of great things this year.

"We're not finished. We're just getting started. That's how I view it. Got a lot of things to build off of, so just keep building."

The injuries have been ridiculous. Goalie Antti Raanta has missed 65 games with a lower-body injury, forward Christian Dvorak 62 (upper-body injury), defenseman Jason Demers 46 (lower-body injury), forward Nick Schmaltz 42 (lower-body injury), forward Michael Grabner 41 (upper-body injury), and so on.

"I've never seen something quite like this," said center Derek Stepan, who missed 10 games in March because of a lower-body injury.

Yet since Jan. 6, the Coyotes have gone 22-13-5. Their 49 points in that span rank eighth in the NHL. They have gone 10-2-1 in their past 13 home games, energizing Gila River Arena.

"So proud of the guys," defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson said. "I mean, with what we have been through with injuries and everything and to still be around there when it's two games left, it says a lot about this team. Bright future ahead of us.

"But now we know what it takes to win in this League. And obviously we're not there right now, but hopefully it's something that we can build off and come back next year."

Goalie Darcy Kuemper was a huge reason the Coyotes were in the race. Since Jan. 6, he has gone 22-9-5 with a 2.06 goals-against average, a .933 save percentage and five shutouts. During that span, he's third in save percentage, fourth in GAA, tied for second in shutouts and third in wins.

For the season the Coyotes rank fifth in the NHL defensively (2.67 goals-against per game) and first in penalty killing (85.3 percent).

But they're 29th offensively (2.56 goals per game) and   26th on the power play (16.1 percent). No one has reached 20 goals or 50 points.

"As a group we defend extremely hard," Stepan said. "That's not an issue. We've got to find ways to score goals, and we've got to continue to work on your skills. There's a good chunk of hockey where we were playing well, but we were losing because we couldn't score goals."

There is potential though. Forward Alex Galchenyuk, who has 18 goals in 71 games, scored 30 for the Montreal Canadiens in 2015-16. Forward Clayton Keller, who has 14 goals in 81 games, scored 23 last season. Grabner, who has nine goals in 40 games, has scored at least 20 goals four times and as many as 34. Dvorak, who has two goals in 19 games, had 15 each of the previous two seasons.

"We've got guys who have done it before," Chayka said. "We've got guys that I know that there's that latent ability in them. …

"If there's an opportunity to add to this group we'll look to do that. But having said that, for the last two years that's what I've been doing. I've been making a lot of transactions. I think we've got to look at this group now and develop it as well."

Bottom line: The Coyotes have improved. They have to keep improving.

"[Coach Rick Tocchet and his staff] did a phenomenal job, obviously," Chayka said. "We developed a mindset. We developed an attitude, a culture. We took big steps in those regards.

"I think there's a lot of rebuilding teams that would like to have our year this year, and we're in a good spot."

{coyotes} Coyotes miss playoffs after rash of injuries, sputtering finish to season

The Arizona Coyotes failed to make the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the seventh consecutive season.

The Coyotes (39-34-8) were eliminated from playoff contention when the Colorado Avalanche defeated the Winnipeg Jets 3-2 in overtime at Pepsi Center on Thursday.

Here is a look at what happened in the 2018-19 season for the Coyotes and why things could be better next season:

The Skinny

Potential UFAs: Richard Panik, RW; Mario Kempe, RW; Calvin Pickard, G; Dave Bolland, C

Potential RFAs: Nick Cousins, C; Lawson Crouse, LW; Josh Archibald, RW; Ilya Lyubushkin, D

Potential 2019 NHL Draft picks: 8

What went wrong

Out of gas: On March 14, the Coyotes were on a 10-2-0 run, four points ahead of the Minnesota Wild for the second wild card into the playoffs from the Western Conference and flirting with their first playoff appearance since advancing to the conference final in 2012. Arizona then went 3-4-3 in its next 10 games, scoring two goals or fewer in eight of them. Most damaging was a 3-1 loss on Tuesday to the 30th-place Los Angeles Kings at Gila River Arena, where the Coyotes were 10-1-1 in their previous 12 games.

Injuries: Though the Coyotes gutted their way through numerous injuries to stay in playoff contention, the absence of key players proved too much to overcome. Goalie Antti Raanta hasn't played since Nov. 27 and center Nick Schmaltz last played Dec. 30. Forwards Derek Stepan, Brad Richardson, Alex Galchenyuk and Christian Dvorak and defensemen Jakob Chychrun and Jason Demers each missed at least 10 games. Arizona particularly was snakebitten with the lower-body injury to Schmaltz, who was acquired in a trade with the Chicago Blackhawks for forwards Dylan Strome and Brendan Perlini on Nov. 25. Schmaltz was productive, with 14 points (five goals, nine assists) in 17 games. The Coyotes will have more time to see him develop after signing Schmaltz to a seven-year contract March 30.

Punchless offense: The Coyotes could not get going offensively, ranking 28th in goals for (207) and tied for 28th in goals per game (2.56). Galchenyuk and Richardson are tied for the Arizona lead with 18 goals each. Center Clayton Keller leads the Coyotes with 47 points (14 goals, 33 assists), a drop-off from the 65 points (23 goals, 42 assists) he had last season as a rookie, when he finished third in Calder Trophy voting.

Reasons for optimism

Late playoff push: The Coyotes showed why they could be playoff contenders for seasons to come despite coming up short this season. They responded to a five-game losing streak (0-4-1) that started just before the NHL All-Star break by going 13-4-0 from Feb. 9 to March 14, best in the Western Conference during that stretch. The players fought through the adversity and responded to second-year coach Rick Tocchet, who guided them to a 16-point improvement from a last-place finish in the West in 2017-18.

Kuemper goal-den: Once goalie Darcy Kuemper took over the No. 1 role when Raanta's season ended, the former backup showed he's a legitimate NHL starter. Since Jan. 4, Kuemper is 22-9-6 with a 2.05 goals-against average, .933 save percentage and five shutouts. His 16 wins since Feb. 9 are second in the NHL (Andrei Vasilevskiy of the Tampa Bay Lightning leads with 18), and his .941 save percentage is third among goalies with at least 11 games played in that span.

Homegrown talent: Though the Coyotes traded Strome, the No. 3 pick in the 2015 NHL Draft, others are waiting in the pipeline. Pierre-Olivier Joseph, a 19-year-old defenseman chosen No. 23 in the 2017 NHL Draft, had 47 points (nine goals, 38 assists) and a plus-36 rating in 62 games for Charlottetown and Drummondville of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Barrett Hayton, an 18-year-old forward selected No. 5 in the 2018 NHL Draft, had 66 points (26 goals, 40 assists) in 39 games for Sault Ste. Marie of the Ontario Hockey League. Nate Schnarr, a 20-year-old center and a third-round pick (No. 75) in 2017, had 102 points (34 goals, 68 assists) for Guelph of the OHL.

{coyotes} Stepan scores twice, Coyotes dump Vegas, 4-1

LAS VEGAS (AP) Derek Stepan scored twice, Darcy Kuemper made 35 saves and the Arizona Coyotes defeated the Vegas Golden Knights 4-1 on Thursday night.

Arizona entered the day needing a win to stay in playoff contention, but was officially eliminated from the postseason when Colorado went into overtime with Winnipeg earlier in the night. The Avalanche needed just one point to clinch the final spot in the Western Conference.

It marks the seventh consecutive season the Coyotes will miss the playoffs.

Richard Panik and Conor Garland also scored for the Coyotes. Kuemper has started a career-high 55 contests and has won a career-high 27 games. Since the calendar flipped to 2019, Darcy Kuemper is 22-9-6 with a 2.02 goals against average.

The Coyotes - who have earned points in 16 of their last 22 games (13-6-3) - improved to 3-3-3 all-time against the Knights, and 3-1-1 at T-Mobile Arena.

Mark Stone scored Vegas' lone goal and Marc-Andre Fleury made 30 stops in his first appearance since March 15. Fleury had been listed as day-to-day with a lower-body injury.

The Golden Knights opened the scoring when Paul Stastny's takeaway deflection fed Stone, who beat Kuemper with a backhand for his fifth goal with the Knights and career-high 33rd overall.

The lead wouldn't last long, though, as Panik gathered a loose puck in the slot and blasted a shot past Fleury while falling down to tie the game at 1 with 2:37 left in the first period.

Stepan's two second-period goals pushed the Coyotes ahead 3-1.

On the first, Lawson Crouse fed Stepan, who deked around Fleury's right pad to give Arizona a 2-1 lead. Stepan got his 15th goal of the season when he buried a rebound that would get challenged by Vegas coach Gerard Gallant, who was looking for goaltender interference. The Situation Room confirmed the incidental contact between Crouse and Fleury occurred in the white ice and did not constitute goaltender interference.

NOTES: After announcing they signed free agent defenseman Jimmy Schuldt to a one-year, entry level contract, the former Hobey Baker Award finalist skated with the Golden Knights during warmups and was then officially scratched for the game. ... Vegas fan favorite Ryan Reaves was also a healthy scratch, missing only his second game of the season.

{coyotes} Kings hurt Coyotes' wild-card chances with 3-1 win

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) An impressive performance by Jack Campbell helped the lowly Los Angeles Kings push the Arizona Coyotes to the brink of elimination from the Western Conference playoff race.

Campbell made a career-high 49 saves and Trevor Lewis scored 3:29 into the third period, sending the Kings to a 3-1 victory over the Coyotes on Tuesday night.

''Even though it's been a disappointing year, it's still fun to play against teams that are on their games down the stretch,'' Campbell said. ''It's definitely fun to kind of be the villains and to try to eliminate teams from the playoffs.''

Tyler Clifford had a goal and an assist for Los Angeles (30-41-9), which had dropped three of four. Drew Doughty added an empty-netter with 44.4 seconds left.

Arizona fell four points behind Colorado for the second wild card in the Western Conference. The Coyotes (38-34-8) need to win their final two games and have Colorado lose its last two in order to have a chance to get in.

''Our job is to come in (Wednesday). I know guys are going to be down,'' Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet said, ''but our coaching staff has to get the energy level up for these guys.''

Brad Richardson scored for Arizona, and Darcy Kuemper made 16 saves before he was accidentally struck in the eye when Lewis raised his stick after his backhand goal.

Kuemper, who has played a key role in Arizona's push for a wild card, was replaced by Calvin Pickard.

''It looked bad but I think he's going to be OK,'' Tocchet said. ''He said he feels OK.''

The Coyotes came up empty on six power plays and lamented their many missed opportunities.

''You can play really great and make a mistake and end up in the back of your net, and it's not always the same on the other foot,'' center Derek Stepan said. ''It's tough to score goals at this time of year.''

Arizona jumped in front when Vinnie Hinostroza set up Richardson 16:06 into the second. Hinostroza gathered in a turnover and took the puck up the ice for a centering pass to Richardson, who moved into a tie for the team lead with his 18th of the season.

The Kings tied it at 1 with less than a second left in the period. Clifford deflected Tyler Toffoli's shot past Kuemper for his 11th goal.

''That hurt us,'' Tocchet said. ''It's tough. It's still 1-1. ... We had some good looks, a couple guys had some good looks, but we didn't score. That's been the tale of this year, we've had a tough time scoring goals.''

The highlight of a scoreless first period was a fight between Clifford and Arizona's Lawson Crouse, the penalty minutes leaders for their respective teams. After Crouse leveled Alec Martinez with a check, Clifford went after Crouse and both exchanged punches while the crowd roared.

NOTES: Kuemper went 227 minutes, 15 seconds without allowing an even-strength goal before Clifford scored. It was the sixth-longest streak in franchise history. ... The Coyotes' 50 shots were a season high, and the first time they've had that many in a game since March 1998. ... Doughty played in his 408th consecutive game, a team record.

{coyotes} Bobrovsky leads 3 Stars of the Week

NEW YORK - Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky, Detroit Red Wings left wing Tyler Bertuzzi and Arizona Coyotes goaltender Darcy Kuemper have been named the NHL's "Three Stars" for the week ending March 31.

FIRST STAR - SERGEI BOBROVSKY, G, COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS

Bobrovsky went 4-0-0 with a 1.00 goals-against average, .966 save percentage and two shutouts to help the Blue Jackets (45-30-4, 94 points) extend their overall winning streak to five games and move into the first Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference. Bobrovsky stopped all 26 shots he faced for his 32nd career shutout - and second straight (also March 24 at VAN) - in a 4-0 victory over the New York Islanders March 26. He made 26 more saves in a 6-2 triumph against the Montreal Canadiens March 28, lifting Columbus ahead of Montreal for the final playoff spot in the conference. Bobrovsky added 23 saves in a 5-2 win over the Nashville Predators March 30, followed by 38 stops - for his League-leading ninth shutout of 2018-19 - in a 4-0 victory against the Buffalo Sabres March 31. The 30-year-old Novokuznetsk, Russia, native and two-time Vezina Trophy winner ranks second in the NHL with 36 wins in 60 total appearances this season (2.55 GAA, .914 SV%, 9 SO).

SECOND STAR - TYLER BERTUZZI, LW, DETROIT RED WINGS

Bertuzzi shared the League lead with 3-7-10 in four outings to power the Red Wings (31-38-10, 72 points) to a perfect week and their fifth consecutive victory overall. He collected one assist in a 3-2 win over the San Jose Sharks March 25. Bertuzzi then registered three straight three-point performances, posting 2-1-3 (including his first career overtime goal) in a 5-4 triumph against the Buffalo Sabres March 28, 1-2-3 in a 4-0 victory over the New Jersey Devils March 29 and three assists in a 6-3 win against the Boston Bruins March 31. In doing so, Bertuzzi became the first Detroit player to record three consecutive three-point games since 1992-93, when Steve Yzerman achieved the feat twice (Feb. 3-11 and March 5-10). The 24-year-old Sudbury, Ont., native has notched career highs across the board this season, ranking fourth on the Red Wings with 19-25-44 in 70 contests.

THIRD STAR - DARCY KUEMPER, G, ARIZONA COYOTES

Kuemper stopped 95 of the 97 shots he faced, going 2-0-1 with a 0.65 goals-against average, .979 save percentage and two shutouts for the Coyotes (38-33-8, 84 points) as they pursue a Wild Card berth in the Western Conference. Kuemper earned his 15th career shutout with 31 saves in a 1-0 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks March 26. He then denied 25 shots in a 3-2 shootout loss to the Colorado Avalanche March 29. Kuemper closed the week with another shutout (his fifth of 2018-19), making 39 saves in a 4-0 triumph against the Minnesota Wild March 31. The 28-year-old Saskatoon, Sask., native has recorded a career-high 26 wins in 53 appearances this season, ranking in the top 10 in the NHL in goals-against average (6th; 2.34) and save percentage (9th; .924).
