{coyotes} Tkachuk scores in OT to give Flames 4-3 win over Coyotes

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) Matthew Tkachuk scored with 34 seconds on the clock in overtime to give the Calgary Flames a 4-3 comeback victory over the Arizona Coyotes on Tuesday night.

After the Flames trailed 3-1 late in the third period, Tkachuk and Mark Giordano scored in a 49-second span to tie it. Johnny Gaudreau also scored for Calgary, and David Rittich made 34 saves.

Clayton Keller, Christian Dvorak and Vinnie Hinostroza scored for the Coyotes.

Antti Raanta started in net for Arizona and stopped 39 shots after Darcy Kuemper earned the win in overtime the previous night at Edmonton.

Giordano threaded a low shot through traffic to score stick side at 17:19 of the third. Tkachuk beat Raanta with a shot from the top of the circle for a power-play goal at 16:30.

Hinostroza pounced on a turnover behind Calgary's net and beat Rittich's glove at 10:31 for his first of the season.

Gaudreau halved a 2-0 deficit with a power-play goal at 17:16 of the second. The winger ended Calgary's 0-for-13 drought with the man advantage.

With Carl Soderberg serving a hooking penalty, Gaudreau redirected Tkachuk's cross-ice pass by Raanta to end a 12-game streak without a goal.

After Raanta denied a breaking Mark Jankowski to open the period, Dvorak tipped an off-speed shot by Phil Kessel past Rittich at 4:09.

Rittich turned away Michael Grabner on a breakaway with his right pad with 2 1/2 minutes remaining in the period.

Keller scored at 8:29 when Calgary turned the puck over in its zone near the blue line. Nick Schmaltz in the high slot dished to Keller for a top-shelf one-timer.

The 23-year-old Schmaltz got his team-leading 14th point of the season.

NOTES: Calgary wing Milan Lucic served the second game of his two-game suspension for punching Blue Jackets forward Kole Sherwood on Saturday.

[cactuswings 4116] Re: LOG: Tucson - Ascend yard (formerly Hamiltons)

Bill,

Re the Dash 8 Q400s, Andrew H Cline has a website (www.qseriesworld.com) where he has pretty good details of the location of the first 220 or so Q400s (the website is still under construction). He notes the Q400s as being at TUS when you were there, as your listed 7 plus N406QX, N415QX and N423QX. Unfortunately therefore, he has ten to your nine seen (when I was there in March I counted 14 visible and his website had 14 listed, so I guess I got lucky).

Mind you, we could all do with similar detailed website for the many and various CRJs, which seem to change very regularly and for which I have more unknowns than tie-ups at TUS!

[cactuswings 4116] Marana and other SW USA storage sites:

Does anyone know of a publicly accessible database of what is stored at e.g. Marana please? I can't find a full list for Marana later than Oct 2017. I was there (briefly) in March this year and have more queries from my notes and photos than I have tie-ups (a common problem, I'm sure). Or does anyone have a decent log from around that time that they are willing to share please?

[cactuswings 4116] Marana - help please

Does anyone know of a publicly accessible database of aircraft at the various SW USA storage sites please? I am aware of those published by Socalspotters.

In particular, I was at Marana in March and have more queries than tie-ups from my logs and photos (I'm sure many others will have had the same experience!).

Or does anyone have recent Marana etc logs they would be willing to share please?

{coyotes} Stepan scores in overtime, Coyotes beat Oilers 3-2

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) The Arizona Coyotes are off to an impressive start early in the season.

Derek Stepan scored at 2:01 of overtime and the Arizona Coyotes beat the Edmonton Oilers 3-2 on Monday night.

Stepan took a feed from Nick Schmaltz and picked the corner on goalie Mikko Koskinen for the winner.

''I think our group has been doing that (grinding) all year, it's a big part of our group is our ability to bounce back, whether it be game to game or even in game,'' Stepan said of Arizona's mental resilience after the Oilers tied it up late. ''Maybe when we don't have our `A' stuff, we're able to have a push back within a few minutes.''

Michael Grabner and Carl Soderberg also scored for the Coyotes, who have won four of their last five.

''It was not a great start, them scoring right away, but back-to-backs you have to rely on all the lines and everyone was contributing and that's a really tough line to play against and they have last change,'' said Coyotes goalie Darcy Kuemper, who made 26 saves. ''I thought everyone, whoever was out there did a great job.''

Connor McDavid and Gaetan Haas scored for the Oilers, who had their two-game winning streak snapped.

''We know we could have been a little bit better at the beginning of the game, but we found a way to get that second goal in the third,'' said Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse. ''Sure, we've been doing it a little too often where we have to find ways at the end of the game to win or force overtime, but over the course of 82 games it's going to happen. It just so happens that it happened in a cluster at the beginning of the year.''

The Oilers only needed 91 seconds to get on the scoreboard as McDavid had a highlight-reel goal, moving past defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson and blowing past Kuemper to record his seventh goal of the season.

Grabner beat Koskinen stick side with a wrist shot to tie the game 1-1 3:30 into the first.

Soderberg took advantage of a turnover by Edmonton defender Joel Persson to make it 2-1 for the Coyotes at about the midway mark of the second, beating Koskinen high to the glove side.

Haas tied it with 4:41 left in the third period. He tipped a shot by Matt Benning past Kuemper for his first career NHL goal, forcing overtime.

''It's good that we score this goal, and we get a point,'' said the 27-year-old Swiss center, playing his first season in the NHL. ''Maybe in the end it's the point we need. I think it's a good point.''

NOTES: It was the first of four meetings between the Pacific Division rivals, with each team winning both road games last year. ... Edmonton has struggled with the Coyotes for quite some time, coming into the game with just seven wins in regulation against Arizona in their last 45 games. .. Kuemper entered the game having only allowed three goals on one occasion out of nine games this season. .. It was Oilers head coach Dave Tippett's first game against his old Coyotes squad. He coached Arizona for eight seasons (2009-10 to 2016-17). ... Alex Chiasson got an opportunity on the top line with Draisaitl and McDavid in an attempt to jumpstart his production. But, he was replaced by Sam Gagner as the game went on.

Oilers: Host defending Stanley Cup champion St. Louis Blues on Wednesday.

{coyotes} Five Questions with Alex Meruelo

Alex Meruelo looks at the Phoenix area's 40 percent Hispanic population and sees a trove of potential new Arizona Coyotes fans.

Meruelo, the NHL's first Hispanic owner, has made boosting the Coyotes' popularity by increasing its Hispanic fan base a mission since he assumed majority ownership in July.

"It's a market that's really gone untapped since the beginning," said Meruelo, who is Cuban-American. "I think if we do the right things attracting the fans, the players, the community, the Hispanic community, we'll have a lot of success with it."

Meruelo, a billionaire who made his fortune in turning around struggling companies, has been aggressive in doing his part to try to make it happen.

He spoke Spanish at his introductory press conference in August. He cut a video in Spanish in September to announce the launch of the Coyotes' Spanish-language social media accounts on Instagram (@LosYotes), Twitter (@LosYotes) and Facebook (Facebook.com/LosYotes); those accounts feature exclusive photos, videos and articles for Spanish-speaking fans.

Meruelo heads the Coyotes recently-formed Hispanic Board to help improve the team's Hispanic outreach.

"We are very fortunate to have Mr. Meruelo as the first Hispanic owner of an NHL team," Coyotes president & CEO Ahron Cohen said in October. "We finally have the right person in place to connect with the Hispanic community and build a genuine relationship."

The 55-year-old spoke with NHL.com about the outreach efforts and how it helps to have a person of color in team ownership.

Here are Five Questions with … Alex Meruelo.

When did you see your first NHL game in person, and what were your thoughts after that game?

"I remember my first game was about 20 years ago and it was a (Los Angeles) Kings game. As soon as I saw the game, I was hooked: the adrenaline rush, the excitement, the fast play … there's no other sport, to me, that comes anywhere close to hockey when it comes to watching it live."

You are the NHL's first Hispanic owner. As such, do you feel a responsibility to grow the game within the Hispanic community in Arizona and beyond?

"I'm not sure I actually feel more of a responsibility. But I have an obligation -- especially being in Arizona, where the market is about 40 percent Hispanic. It's a tremendous opportunity to really present the game to them, and we're working on that right now. But me being Hispanic and understanding the market is where we plan to start moving forward, and I think there will be a lot of excitement by the community and by myself, personally, so we focus now and we move from there."

A series of interesting events occurred during the summer: You assumed majority ownership of the Coyotes, Auston Matthews, a Mexican-American player from Arizona, was picked to be the face of the NHL as the cover athlete for EA Sports NHL 20, and a hockey tournament featuring players from Latin American countries took place near Miami. Are all these signs that interest in hockey is growing within the Hispanic community?

"To be able to see a Hispanic player involved in hockey, like Auston -- and myself, being one of the first majority owners -- is something that, to me, is making a huge difference and will continue to make more differences. I think, to me, what we do with it, how we outreach to the Hispanic community, will make a big difference. First of all, we're very involved in visiting communities, Latino communities, having them understand how the game is played and getting them more involved and actually watching games. The second thing we're doing is we're setting up an advisory board where we're going to have Hispanic leaders from the community in the valley to assist us with information and help and areas that we can focus on that can bring us more with the Hispanic community. … I want the Hispanic community to know that we're here for them and that we want them more and more involved every day. Whether you're playing the game, watching the game or being with your family, I think it's important."

Why is that so important?

The obvious is that in Arizona as we know, especially in the valley, 40 percent of the market is Hispanic and it's a market that's really gone untapped since the beginning. I think if we do the right things attracting the fans, the players, the community, the Hispanic community, we'll have a lot of success with it.

Is there a right way and a wrong way for hockey to reach out to the Hispanic community?

"I believe that if we take the time to do the correct marketing, reach out to the communities in the Hispanic market, make ourselves visible, actually take meetings and explain the game to them and take them to actual Coyotes games, I truly believe that it won't take very long before they are excited wanting to go to the games, be part of the games and play the game."
