{coyotes} Report: NHLPA advising players not to play in Olympic qualifiers

With Tokyo 2020 now in the rear-view mirror, the sports world will quickly shift its focus to Beijing 2022.

One thing to be excited about with the upcoming Olympic Winter Games is the potential return of NHL players to the always-anticipated men's ice hockey tournament.

The NHL announced in July it had agreed to pause play from Feb. 7 to Feb. 22 on its 2021-22 schedule to account for the Olympics, however it has yet to be finalized whether or not NHL players will be permitted to compete in Beijing as there remain several hurdles to clear.

As first reported by Larry Brooks of the New York Post, the NHLPA has notified players the NHL will not pay for COVID-19 insurance at the Olympics or during Olympic qualification events and the league's position is players won't be paid for games they miss due to COVID-19 if they were to contract the virus while overseas at Olympic events.

Another issue, according to Brooks, is the NHLPA has been told international federations won't pay the insurance either, so at this point the Players' Association is strongly advising players not to participate in Olympic-qualifying events.

Qualification tournaments are scheduled to take place across Europe in late August. Twelve teams will compete for the final three spots in the Olympic tournament. Slovakia and Denmark are among the teams aiming to qualify and they'd be the countries most likely to be impacted by not having eligible NHLers on their rosters.

Canada, the United States, Russia, Sweden, Finland, Czech Republic, Germany, Switzerland and host China are the nine teams that have already qualified.

NHL players didn't participate in the Olympics in 2018, marking the first time since 1994 in Lillehammer, Norway that NHLers were absent from the Games.

The NHL will release a revised 2021-22 schedule if players don't end up participating in the Olympics for a second-straight time.

"The NHL and the NHL Players' Association will retain full authority to decide not to participate should COVID-19 conditions worsen or otherwise pose a threat to the health and safety of NHL Players, or for any other reason that may warrant such decision," a July statement read.

The hockey events (one men's and one women's) at Beijing 2022 are slated to take place from Feb. 4 to Feb. 20 with games split between the Beijing National Indoor Stadium and Wukesong Arena.

{coyotes} NHL to require everyone that interacts with club personnel to be vaccinated

The NHL sent a memo to teams Friday stating that any worker or people with access to personal interactions with club personnel, including players, are required to be fully vaccinated, per Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.

The league defined "personal interactions" as within 12 feet.

The memo also outlined some limited exceptions, for example, valet parking attendants.

Per Friedman, NHL/NHLPA protocols for players have yet to be completed.

The news come as COVID-19 restrictions slowly start to take shape ahead of the Oct. 12 puck drop on the 2021-22 season.

Earlier this week, the Winnipeg Jets announced that they will require all fans who wish to attend home games at the Canada Life Centre to be fully vaccinated.

{coyotes} Coyotes retool at defenseman, adding Gostisbehere, Stralman

2020-21 season: 24-26-6, fifth in Honda West Division; did not qualify for Stanley Cup Playoffs

Key arrivals

Shayne Gostisbehere, D: The 28-year-old was acquired July 22 from the Philadelphia Flyers, along with a second-round pick and a seventh-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft, in a trade for future considerations. He scored 20 points (nine goals, 11 assists) and averaged 19:56 of ice time in 41 games last season. … Carter Hutton, G: The 35-year-old signed a one-year contract July 28. He was 1-10-1 with a 3.47 goals-against average and an .886 save percentage in 13 games (12 starts) for the Buffalo Sabres last season. … Anton Stralman, D: The 35-year-old was acquired July 26 from the Florida Panthers, along with defenseman prospect Vladislav Kolyachonok and a second-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft, in a trade for a seventh-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft. He scored nine points (three goals, six assists) in 38 games and did not score a point in five playoff games last season. … Ryan Dzingel, F: The 29-year-old signed a one-year contract July 28 after scoring 13 points (eight goals, five assists) in 40 games for the Carolina Hurricanes and Ottawa Senators last season. … Andre Tourigny, coach: The 47-year-old was hired July 1 after it was announced May 9 that Rick Tocchet would not return as coach after four seasons. Tourigny is a two-time Ontario Hockey League coach of the year (2018-19, 2019-20) and was an assistant for first-place Canada at the 2021 IIHF World Championship.

Key departures

Oliver Ekman-Larsson, D: Arizona's captain was traded to the Vancouver Canucks on July 23 along with forward Conor Garland for a first-round pick (No. 9) in the 2021 NHL Draft, a second-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft, a seventh-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft and forwards Jay Beagle, Antoine Roussel and Loui Eriksson. Ekman-Larsson scored 24 points (three goals, 21 assists) in 46 games last season. … Darcy Kuemper, G: He was traded to the Colorado Avalanche on July 28 for defenseman Conor Timmins, a first-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft and a conditional third-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft. Kuemper was 10-11-3 with a 2.56 GAA, a .907 save percentage and two shutouts in 27 games last season. … Conor Garland, F: He scored 39 points (12 goals, 27 assists) in 49 games last season. … Antti Raanta, G: He agreed to a two-year contract with the Hurricanes on July 28 after going 5-5-2 with a 3.36 GAA and .905 save percentage in 12 games (11 starts) last season.

On the cusp

Dylan Guenther, F: The 18-year-old was selected with the 2021 first-round pick acquired from Vancouver in the trade for Ekman-Larsson and Garland. Guenther scored 24 points (12 goals, 12 assists) in 12 games for Edmonton of the Western Hockey League last season. … Victor Soderstrom, D: The 20-year-old scored two points (one goal, one assist) in four games with the Coyotes and 10 points (two goals, eight assists) in 32 games with Tucson of the American Hockey League last season, his first as a professional in North America. ... Jan Jenik, F: The 20-year-old scored one goal in each of in his first two NHL games, at the San Jose Sharks on May 7 and 8. He scored 14 points (six goals, eight assists) in 29 games with Tucson during his first pro season.

What they still need

More production from the young forward core of Clayton Keller, 23; Nick Schmaltz, 25; Barrett Hayton, 21; and Christian Dvorak, 25. The four combined to score 43 goals last season, when the Coyotes, led by 33-year-old forward Phil Kessel in goals (20) and points (43), saw their goals per game drop to 2.68 from 2.71 in 2019-20. Arizona also could use improved play on the penalty kill, which was tied with the Minnesota Wild for 11th in the NHL (80.8 percent) after it was fifth (82.7 percent) in 2019-20.

They said it

"It's been a good time to be a 'Yote.' We were very fortunate to be at a good time where a lot of our contracts were expiring, and we were able to take on some players and gain some picks. The Coyotes haven't gotten a lot of bounces over the years, so it's probably nice to see them get a few this year." -- general manager Bill Armstrong

Fantasy focus

Even with Arizona trading Garland, Ekman-Larsson and Kuemper, defenseman Jakob Chychrun remains fantasy relevant, a fringe top-20 player at the position and ranked just outside the top 100 overall. He led NHL defensemen in goals (18) last season, ranked second in shots on goal (176, four behind Dougie Hamilton, now with the New Jersey Devils) and was tied with Quinn Hughes of the Canucks for 10th in points (41 in 56 games). Even with concerns about Chychrun's supporting cast, he's a viable third fantasy defenseman in almost any league. -- Pete Jensen

Projected lineup

Clayton Keller -- Nick Schmaltz -- Phil Kessel

Barrett Hayton -- Christian Dvorak -- Christian Fischer

Lawson Crouse -- Johan Larsson -- Dmitrij Jaskin

Ryan Dzingel -- Jay Beagle -- Antoine Roussel

Jakob Chychrun -- Conor Timmins

Shayne Gostisbehere -- Ilya Lyubushkin

Anton Stralman -- Victor Soderstrom

Carter Hutton

{coyotes} Coyotes sign defenceman Conor Timmins to two-year contract

The Arizona Coyotes have signed defenceman Conor Timmins to a two-year contract, the team announced Friday.

Although terms were not disclosed, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported the deal carries an average annual value of $850,000.

The 22-year-old from St. Catharines, Ont., had seven assists in 31 regular-season games with the Colorado Avalanche this past year and appeared in 10 playoff games.

Arizona acquired Timmins, who was a restricted free agent, in the trade that sent goaltender Darcy Kuemper to Colorado on July 28.

{coyotes} Coyotes sign depth centre Travis Boyd to one-year contract

The Arizona Coyotes added some forward depth by signing centre Travis Boyd to a one-year contract.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed by the team but PuckPedia reports the contract is worth $750,000.

Boyd, 27, split last season with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Vancouver Canucks, appearing in 39 games. The six-foot pivot had five goals, 10 points and two penalty minutes.

"We are pleased to have Travis join the Coyotes," Coyotes general manager Bill Armstrong said in a statement. "He is a versatile, two-way center who can fill a lot of different roles for our club."
