TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) Mark Scheifele scored two goals, Connor Hellebuyck stopped 15 shots and the Winnipeg Jets extended their points streak to 12 games with a 6-2 win over the Arizona Coyotes on Sunday night.

One of the NHL's best defensive teams, Winnipeg shut down the Coyotes most of the night, holding them to four shots until Nick Schmaltz scored midway through the second period.

Hellebuyck was sharp after being named to his fourth-career All-Star game on Thursday and the Jets finished with a 36-17 advantage in shots. Winnipeg has allowed three goals or fewer in a franchise-record 29 straight games and leads the NHL with 56 points.

Vladislav Namestnikov, Cole Perfetti, Adam Lowry and Nikolaj Ehlers also scored in Winnipeg's sixth straight win. The Jets' points streak (10-0-2) is their longest since joining the NHL as the Atlanta Thrashers in 1999-00.

Arizona's Dylan Guenther scored in the third period of his 2023-24 debut and Karel Vejmelka stopped 29 shots.

The Jets spent long stints in Arizona's end in the first period, including a pair of power plays, but couldn't get anything past Vejmelka in 11 shots.

Namestnikov broke through late in the period, beating Vejmelka to the stick side after a giveaway behind the goal by Arizona's Sean Durzi went right out in front.

Ehlers made it 2-0 early in the second period, beating Vejmelka from the high slot after the puck caromed off teammate Dylan Samberg's skate.

Schmaltz capitalized on one of Arizona's few good scoring chances in the second period, scoring from the low left circle on a feed from Clayton Keller.

Perfetti put the Jets back up two goals late in the second period by punching in a rebound off his own shot on a delayed penalty.

Arizona turned up the offensive pressure to start the third period, but it turned against them when Scheifele scored on a breakaway to make it 4-1.

Guenther scored on a wraparound after Hellebuyck ventured too far from his crease. Scheifele and Lowry scored late to close out Winnipeg's third straight five-goal game against Arizona this season.

The Chicago Blackhawks claimed forward Zach Sanford off waivers from the Arizona Coyotes, the team announced Saturday.

Sanford, 29, appeared in 11 games for Arizona this season since being recalled from the AHL last month, tallying two assists and nine shots on goal in limited ice-time. The American winger has spent the majority of the season with the AHL's Tuscon Roadrunners after signing a one-year, two-way deal with the Coyotes this offseason.

The nine-year NHL veteran was placed on waivers by Arizona this past Friday, and has previously played for the Washington Capitals, St. Louis Blues, Ottawa Senators, Winnipeg Jets and Nashville Predators.

Sanford has played in over 300 NHL games over the course of his career, registering 49 goals and 51 assists during that span.

The move comes in the wake of Chicago placing forwards Connor Bedard and Nick Foligno to an already crowded Injured Reserve following their 4-2 loss at the hands of the New Jersey Devils on Friday night.

{coyotes} Bo Horvat scores twice, Ilya Sorokin makes 24 saves in Islanders' 5-1 win over Coyotes

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) Bo Horvat scored twice, the second in New York's three-goal third period, and Ilya Sorokin made 25 saves to help the Islanders beat the Arizona Coyotes 5-1 on Thursday night.

Anders Lee and Julien Gauthier scored 52 seconds apart for a 4-1 lead early in the third, and Horvat skated in alone for an unassisted goal with seven minutes remaining.

Matthew Barzal had two assists to give him 401 points in the NHL. Barzal, named to his third All-Star team Thursday, has six assists in his last six games. Horvat added an assist.

"Anders did his thing, and I thought that both Bo and 'Barzy' were skating determined," Islanders coach Lane Lambert said. "Very solid, steady play away from the puck, both of them. As a result they had some opportunities and got some numbers."

Mike Reilly also scored for the Islanders, who had lost three of four. Sorokin had three shutouts in five previous games against Arizona.

"Pretty much all our goals came off the forecheck, so that was big for us," said Barzal, whose team is 1-1-1 on a four-game trip following a 5-4 overtime loss at Colorado on Tuesday night. "The last game in Colorado was not my line's best, so we needed to bounce back."

Nick Schmaltz scored and Connor Ingram made 23 saves for Arizona. The Coyotes have lost two in a row after winning six of seven..

"That's when you learn the most, when things aren't going your way," said Coyotes forward Clayton Keller, named to his fourth All-Star team. "You have to dig deep, and that's why I love this game so much. All the challenges, the setbacks, and the adversity."

Lee scored on an open chance from the slot at 4:49 of the third, when Barzal got a stick on an attempted clearing pass and it deflected to Lee. Gauthier carried the puck from his end and scored on a first short from the left circle.

"We came out really well in the third period," Horvat said. "Something that we haven't done in the past, and tonight I thought we did a great job of that."

Horvat opened the scoring at 7:56 of the first period, 11 seconds into a power play. Noah Dobson slapped a rolling puck from the right circle that ricocheted off an defender right to Horvat, who put a quick wrister past Ingram from the slot.

Reilly made it 2-0 four minutes later, when he scored on a wrist shot from the low left circle. An Arizona turnover in the Islanders' end led to a quick 3-on-1 break.

Schmaltz scored on a power play 3:29 into the second period to make it 2-1. The Coyotes had a 5-on-3 advantage for nine seconds after consecutive New York penalties and Schmaltz scored four seconds after the first penalty expired.

The Coyotes played without forward Jason Zucker, who served the first game of a three-game suspension after taking a boarding penalty against Florida on Tuesday night.

Islanders defenseman Robert Bortuzzo was placed on injured reserve before the game because of a lower-body injury. He was checked into the boards in the second period of a 5-4 overtime loss at Colorado on Tuesday night.

New York goalie Semyon Varlamov also sustained a lower-body injury in Colorado and was not available. Goalie Ken Appleby was recalled from American Hockey League Bridgeport.

{coyotes} NHL All-Star Game rosters unveiled; Matthews to represent host Maple Leafs

Auston Matthews and Connor Bedard highlight the group of 32 players selected by the NHL to play in the 2024 NHL All-Star Game at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto on Feb. 3. 

Matthews, who leads the NHL with 30 goals, will represent the host Toronto Maple Leafs. Bedard, the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NHL Draft, leads the Chicago Blackhawks and all NHL rookies with 33 points (15 goals, 18 assists).

Fans will select the final 12 players (eight skaters, four goalies) through the 2024 NHL All-Star Fan Vote presented by MassMutual, which is underway and runs through Jan. 11. Fans can vote at NHL.com/vote and via X (formerly Twitter) and the NHL App.

Bedard is one of seven players selected to make their first appearance in the NHL All-Star Game. The others are Anaheim Ducks forward Frank Vatrano, Columbus Blue Jackets forward Boone Jenner, Dallas Stars goalie Jake Oettinger, Florida Panthers forward Sam Reinhart, Seattle Kraken forward Oliver Bjorkstrand and St. Louis Blues forward Robert Thomas. 

He's also one of six No. 1 picks in the NHL draft to be selected for the game.

Matthews, the No. 1 pick in the 2016 NHL Draft, will be making his fifth All-Star Game appearance, while Edmonton Oilers center Connor McDavid, the No. 1 pick in the 2015 NHL Draft, will make his seventh. Other No. 1 picks selected to play in the All-Star Game this year are Pittsburgh Penguins center Sidney Crosby (2005), who is making his sixth appearance, Colorado Avalanche center Nathan MacKinnon (2013), who is making his fifth appearance, Buffalo Sabres defenseman Rasmus Dahlin (2018), who is making his third appearance, and New Jersey Devils center Jack Hughes (2019), who is also making his third appearance.

All-Star Weekend, which runs from Feb. 1-3, will have a completely new look this year. The player draft will return to as part of a new event: NHL All-Star Thursday.

Celebrities will be paired with captains, who will pick the four teams of 11 players (nine skaters, two goalies) for the NHL All-Star Game.

The NHL Alumni Association will announce its Man of the Year in a tribute to the 1967 Toronto Maple Leafs, their last team to win the Stanley Cup. The Professional Women's Hockey League will play a 3-on-3 game.

The skills competition, which will be held Feb. 2, will have a new look this year as well, with 12 NHL All-Stars competing for points in eight events, with the NHL All-Star who accumulates the most points taking home a prize of $1 million (USD).

Each player will compete in four of the first six events listed below, earning points for their respective finish in each event.

The events are: Fastenal NHL Fastest Skater; Rogers NHL Hardest Shot; Upper Deck NHL Stick Handling; NHL One Timers; NHL Passing Challenge; Cheetos NHL Accuracy Shooting.

The top eight point-earners will advance to the seventh event, the Honda NHL Shootout, where each player will choose which goalie they shoot against. Following the Honda NHL Shootout, the top six point-earners will advance to the eighth and final event, the Pepsi NHL Obstacle Course, where the point totals are doubled.

"We've decided to add a third night to an already vibrant weekend," NHL chief content officer Steve Mayer said. "We felt like this was a year to make some changes."

{coyotes} Zucker suspended 3 games for actions in Coyotes game

NEW YORK – Arizona Coyotes forward Jason Zucker has been suspended for three games, without pay, for boarding Florida Panthers forward Nick Cousins during NHL Game No. 581 in Arizona on Tuesday, Jan. 2, the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety announced today.

The incident occurred at 19:05 of the second period. Zucker was assessed a major penalty and game misconduct for boarding.

Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and, based on his average annual salary, Zucker will forfeit $82,812.51. The money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.

{coyotes} Zucker to have Player Safety hearing for actions in Coyotes game

Jason Zucker will have a hearing with the NHL Department of Player Safety on Wednesday.

The Arizona Coyotes forward is facing discipline for boarding/interference on Florida Panthers center Nick Cousins.

The incident occurred at 19:09 of the second period during Florida's 4-1 win at Mullett Arena in Tempe, Arizona, on Tuesday. Zucker received major penalties for boarding and fighting and a game misconduct.

The following grounds are being considered for supplemental discipline: boarding/interference. However, the Department of Player Safety retains the right to make adjustments to the infraction upon review.

{coyotes} Reinhart, Tkachuk score late; Florida Panthers win fifth straight 4-1 over the Arizona Coyotes

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) Sam Reinhart and Matthew Tkachuk scored 42 seconds apart in the third period and the Florida Panthers beat the Arizona Coyotes 4-1 on Tuesday night.

Sergei Bobrovsky made 21 saves and Carter Verhaeghe and Gustav Forsling also scored for the Panthers, who have won five straight and nine of 13.

"Sometimes it's not the easiest flying all the way across the country and getting right into one, and they made it tough tonight," Reinhart said. "They fly around the ice. They are a good hockey team. I didn't really seem like a 4-1 game, but we were able to stick with it."

Reinhart scored on a power play at 7:56 off the third period to break a 1-1 tie, and Tkachuk was credited with the goal at 8:38 when Arizona defenseman Michael Kesselring tipped the puck into the net from in front. Forsling scored an empty-net goal with 2:21 left.

Alex Kerfoot scored a short-handed goal to tie it at 1-1 early in the third period for the Coyotes, who had won two in a row and six of seven. The Panthers outshot the Coyotes 38-22.

"Even when they scored a short-handed goal, it's just keep plugging on," Florida coach Paul Maurice said. "That's just a metaphor for this team. When we have bad breaks or bad events, they are confident in what they are doing."

Reinhart has six goals in his last five games, and his 11 power-play goals lead the league. He has scored at least 10 power-play goals in each of the last four seasons.

Aleksander Barkov assisted on Reinhart's goal and set the franchise record with 416 career assists. He has nine assists in his last five games.

"It was a 60-minute effort by us," Barkov said. "I'm honored and fortunate that I get to be a Florida Panther for such a long time, and hopefully for even longer. Those milestones feel great, but they are going to feel even better after the career when you have a chance to relax and think about them."

Florida played the first game of a four-game road trip while the Coyotes played the first game of a five-game homestand.

Bobrovsky, making his fifth start in six games, has 18 wins and trails only Colorado's Alexandar Georgiev, who has 20.

"When Bob is playing like that, is is pretty fun to be in front of him," Reinhart said.

Coyotes goaltender Karel Vejmelka made 34 saves while having his career-best four-game winning streak broken.

Verhaeghe opened the scoring with an unassisted goal at 10:46 of the first period. His pass was knocked down as he entered the offensive zone, but the puck rolled free and he picked it up and put it past Vejmelka on the glove side.

The Coyotes appeared to score less than three minutes into the game when Logan Cooley's shot from the left point was deflected in, but the goal was disallowed because Coyotes forward Liam O'Brien bumped Bobrovsky and knocked him off balance while joining the play from behind the net.

Coyotes forward Jason Zucker and Forsling received five-minute major penalties for fighting after Zucker slammed Forsling into the side boards with 51 seconds remaining in the scoreless second period. Zucker was penalized five minutes for boarding and Forsling two minutes for instigating. Zucker received a game misconduct and Forsling a 10-minute misconduct.

Kerfoot scored 3:17 into the third period to tie it midway through the Panthers' three-minute power play.

"We were in it after two (periods), not only by the score but by the way we played," Arizona coach Andre Tourigny said. "In the third period, we got emotional and had a tough time to stay focused and keep our composure. They scored a big goal off their power play, and right away after we scored another one (own goal), and that sucked the energy out of us a little bit."
