CALGARY, Alberta (AP) Yegor Sharangovich scored a power-play goal in overtime to give the Calgary Flames a 3-2 victory over the Arizona Coyotes on Tuesday night.

The Coyotes were penalized for too many men at 3:03 of overtime and Sharangovich roofed a sharp-angled shot with 18 seconds remaining in extra time.

Nazem Kadri had a goal and an assist and Blake Coleman also scored for the Flames, who won their fourth win in a row. Dan Vladar made 25 saves.

Sean Durzi had a goal and assist and Logan Cooley scored one for Arizona while Connor Ingram stopped 27 shots in the loss.

The Flames played without winger Jonathan Huberdeau (illness) and also called up goaltender Dustin Wolf from the AHL's Wranglers after declaring Jacob Markstrom day-to-day with a lower-body injury.

The Coyotes led 2-0 on Cooley's power-play goal at 6:37 of the third period. Durzi's shot deflected off the toe of Cooley in the slot.

But Calgary pulled even with a pair of goals in a 63-second span. Coleman scored his team-leading 20th and his fifth in four games at 8:54 by redirecting Rasmus Andersson's feed from behind the goal line.

Kadri extended his point streak to seven straight games driving the net to knock in a one-handed pass from Martin Pospisil at 9:57.

After a scoreless first period, Durzi scored at 8:20 of the second period to give Arizona the early lead.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) Nick Bjugstad had his second career hat trick Connor Ingram made 38 saves for his fifth shutout of the season and the Arizona Coyotes routed the Minnesota Wild 6-0 on Saturday night.

Bjugstad, the Minneapolis native who starred at the University of Minnesota, snapped a 16-game goal drought. He had two goals in the first period and completed the hat trick in the second with his ninth goal of the season.

Clayton Keller had two goals and an assist, and Alexander Kerfoot also scored for Arizona. Keller has scored goals in three straight games and has 19 points in 24 career games against the Wild. The Coyotes had lost four of five, all at home.

Forward Kirill Kaprizov and goalier Filip Gustavsson returned from injuries for Minnesota, but the Wild lost for the eighth time in nine games.

Kaprizov, the team's scoring leader with 34 points, missed seven games becaue an upper-body injury and Gustavsson, the top netminder, missed seven games with a lower-body injury.

Gustavsson struggled in his return as did a defense still missing its top two defensemen in Jared Spurgeon and Jonas Brodin. Gustavsson allowed five goals on 18 shots before being pulled midway through the second period for Marc-Andre Fleury. Fleury stopped 14 of 15 shots faced.

The Wild surged with 11 wins in 14 games after John Hynes replaced Dean Evason as head coach, but are 1-7-1 in their last nine games, while injuries have played a part.

On the first game of a three-game road trip, Arizona jumped on Minnesota quickly. Kerfoot scored five minutes in and the Coyotes scored three times in the first period. Two of the goals were on the power play.

Arizona was 2 of 3 on the power play. Minnesota's penalty kill entered the day 30th in the NHL and 32nd at home.

{coyotes} Yegor Sharangovich has 2nd career hat trick, Flames beat Coyotes 6-2

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) Yegor Sharangovich scored two of his three goals in the third period and the Calgary Flames chased Arizona goalie Karel Vejmelka early in a 6-2 victory over the Coyotes on Thursday night.

Sharangovich, Mikael Backlund, Rasmus Andersson and Blake Coleman scored in the Flames' four-goal first period, and Sharangovich finished his second career hat trick in the third.

"I think it's chemistry with his two linemates now," Flames coach Ryan Huska said about Sharangovich, who skates on a line with center Elias Lindholm and Jonathan Huberdeau.

"They are starting to make some plays together. We have talked all year about his shot release. I think he is putting himself in positions now where he is available and they are starting to find him."

Jacob Markstrom made 33 saves to help the Flames win for the fifth time in seven games. Coleman also had two assists.

Lawson Crouse and Clayton Keller scored for the Coyotes, who trailed 4-1 after the first period. They finished 1-4 on a five-game homestand after winning six of seven.

"It worries me," said Arizona coach Andre Tourigny, whose team was coming off an overtime, comeback victory over Boston. "You saw what we can do against Boston. You saw the energy. You saw the desperation. That was a bright spot. Today, that's why it is disappointing, surprising."

Sharangovich has five goals in his last two games after scoring twice in a 6-3 victory over Ottawa on Tuesday night, when Coleman also had two goals. Backlund skated in his 950th game, second in Calgary franchise history.

"Sharky (Sharangovich) was really good," Coleman said. "That whole line was really solid. They made some big plays, some big goals. Really happy for Sharky to get that hat trick. It's always a special feeling. The third one was really a big goal for us."

Backlund opened the scoring 20 seconds into the game, when he skated in alone on Vejmelka after an Arizona turnover and scored on a wrist shot from the lower left circle.

Sharangovich made it 2-0 six minutes later on a short-handed goal after another turnover, taking a nifty backhand pass from Coleman to score from the right circle.

Andersson scored with 7:53 left for a three-goal lead. Nazem Kadri took a shot from the left circle that hit the back boards and ricocheted directly to Andersson, who tucked it in from the right side.

Crouse got the Coyotes' first goal when he picked up a rebound of Nick Bjugstad's shot and had a backhander bounce in off the Flames' Martin Posipsil with 6:14 left in the period.

The Flames regained a three-goal lead 14 seconds later, when Coleman tipped in Chris Tanev's shot from the right point to make it 4-1.

Connor Ingram then replaced Vejmelka, who gave up goals on three of the first four shots he faced and four of 12 overall. Ingram made 18 saves.

Keller scored from the left circle on a 3-on-2 break two minutes into the second period to close the deficit to 4-2. Sharangovich scored 58 seconds in the third period and again on a power play seven minutes into the period to make it 6-2.

The Flames scored four goals in consecutive periods over two games. They had four in the third period of the 6-3 win over Ottawa, which broke a two-game losing streak.

"We had a tough weekend," Coleman said. "We wanted to bounce back and show we were better than that."

{coyotes} NHLPA unveils mental health initiative to help hockey players learn more, watch for warning signs

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

Whenever Blake Wheeler endured mental health challenges in his hockey career, he felt better when he talked about them and sought help.

When the NHL Players' Association introduced a pilot program to teach the basics of mental health, Wheeler was on board to give it a try. On Wednesday the union unveiled its First Line program, an initiative with Mental Health Commission of Canada that is now available to players who want to learn more about the topic.

"We're opening a door that hasn't been opened before and giving guys just a little bit of a feel that, if something pops up in your life, if you need a little bit of support, you have a few guys who have been trained a little bit," said Wheeler, who is in his 16th season and first with the New York Rangers. "Hopefully in the future this is just commonplace in our league."

A handful of players in recent months have opened up about mental health struggles, including Arizona's Connor Ingram, Florida's Spencer Knight and Colorado's Samuel Girard. They received care from the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program, a joint venture of the league and union.

First Line is separate from that and is designed to be a preventive measure, offering players the tools to understand mental health and recognize potential warning signs in themselves, teammates and family members.

"(It) is not therapy or counseling," NHLPA director of player health and safety Maria Dennis told The Associated Press. "It's a class. It's to educate players and arm them with the knowledge and skills so that they could take the first step."

Wheeler and Calgary captain Mikael Backlund were among the roughly 20 players who took the pilot class with Jay Harrison, a retired defenseman who's now the PA's consulting psychologist. Harrison said the idea came from player feedback, especially from the pandemic when there was more focus put on mental health concerns.

Shane Silver, VP of the Mental Health Commission of Canada's Opening Minds division that focuses on mental health education, said there has been sharp growth in interest from organizations since the pandemic. Director Mike Pietrus said the programs can be adapted to specific needs — in this case, that of NHL players, who play in a sport that prides itself on secrecy when it comes to injuries and other details.

"You're dealing with Type-A personalities who basically embody who they are and what they want to be and everything, their goal is set to becoming the best possible athlete," Pietrus said. "They become so obsessed with that that they forget about so many other things. And then later on in life when they, for example, get married and have kids, their perspective changes quite a bit."

Backlund took the course after getting the "C" as Flames captain, seeing it as a way to help him become a better leader.

"There were some simple little things that can help us big time," Backlund said. "I want to keep working on this and improve my skills as a leader on the team as the captain and learn how I can be mentally stronger and healthier and also how I can see signs of maybe my teammates are struggling or not feeling as well and how I can help them."

Calgary teammate Oliver Kylington missed all last season to focus on his mental health, a now-familiar step after other examples around sports, like NBA star Kevin Love, gymnast Simone Biles and former swimmer Michael Phelps acknowledging their own struggles.

"Everybody who comes out, it adds to just knocking down that barrier and the stigma," Dennis said. "The more athletes that come out and talk about their own experiences, the better it is."

Harrison, who played parts of nine NHL seasons from 2006-15, said he believes the culture is shifting in hockey, a sport where mental and physical toughness is stressed from a young age.

"This lies in a place of enhancing and supporting our players' ability to transform that culture from within," Harrison said. "Players are now demonstrating that they're willing to invest and learn. It's important to them."

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

William Nylander was rewarded with an eight-year, $92 million contract from the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday.

Now, NHL fans appear to be rewarding the Maple Leafs forward with a chance to play in front of his home fans in the 2024 NHL All-Star Game in Toronto.

Nylander is the leading vote-getter among skaters in the 2024 NHL All-Star Fan Vote presented by MassMutual. More than 20 million votes have been cast, with the vote running through midnight Thurdsday.

Fans can vote on at NHL.com/vote, via X (formerly Twitter) and the NHL App. Every retweet vote cast on Wednesday will count twice.

As of midnight Monday, Nylander had 744,990 votes. His Toronto teammate, forward Mitchell Marner, was fifth with 457,900 votes. Rounding out the top eight were three Vancouver Canucks forwards, Elias Pettersson (fourth, 518,168 votes), J.T. Miller (sixth, 452,451) and Brock Boeser (seventh, 383,954). Colorado Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar was second with 664,394 votes and Edmonton Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl was third with 567,917 votes. New York Rangers forward Artemi Panarin was eighth with 362,210 votes, but he has said he will not go to All-Star Game because his wife is expecting their second child. Avalanche forward Mikko Rantanen was ninth with 342,193 votes.

The overall leading vote-getter is Canucks goalie Thatcher Demko with 788,278 votes. He would be one of four goalies voted in by the fans. Rounding out the top four are Sergei Bobrovsky of the Florida Panthers (440,210), Boston Bruins goalie Jeremy Swayman (381,270) and Avalanche goalie Alexandar Georgiev (350,179). Georgiev has a 39-vote lead over Bruins goalie Linus Ullmark.

The 12 players voted in by the fans will join the 32 players selected by the NHL who were unveiled on Jan. 4.

The first six of the final 12 will be announced on ABC, ESPN+ and Sportsnet during the first intermission of the game between the New York Rangers and Washington Capitals on Saturday (1 p.m. ET). The final six will be announced on Sportsnet and NHL Network prior to game between the Colorado Avalanche and Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday (7 p.m. ET).

All-Star Weekend, which runs from Feb. 1-3, will have a completely new look this year. The player draft will return to as part of a new event: NHL All-Star Thursday.

Celebrities will be paired with captains, who will pick the four teams of 11 players (nine skaters, two goalies) for the NHL All-Star Game.

The NHL Alumni Association will announce its Man of the Year in a tribute to the 1967 Toronto Maple Leafs, their last team to win the Stanley Cup. The Professional Women's Hockey League will play a 3-on-3 game.

"Toronto will be cool," Avalanche center Nathan MacKinnon said. "I have family that lives there, friends that can just fly up easily. It'll be a little different this year. Last year, Florida was fun; little better weather there for sure, but I don't mind the cold."

The skills competition, which will be held Feb. 2, will have a new look this year as well, with 12 NHL All-Stars competing for points in eight events, with the NHL All-Star who accumulates the most points taking home a prize of $1 million (USD).

Each player will compete in four of the first six events listed below, earning points for their respective finish in each event.

The events are: Fastenal NHL Fastest Skater; Rogers NHL Hardest Shot; Upper Deck NHL Stick Handling; NHL One Timers; NHL Passing Challenge; Cheetos NHL Accuracy Shooting.

The top eight point-earners will advance to the seventh event, the Honda NHL Shootout, where each player will choose which goalie they shoot against. Following the Honda NHL Shootout, the top six point-earners will advance to the eighth and final event, the Pepsi NHL Obstacle Course, where the point totals are doubled.

"We've decided to add a third night to an already vibrant weekend," NHL chief content officer Steve Mayer said. "We felt like this was a year to make some changes."

Tickets to the 2024 NHL All-Star Skills presented by DraftKings Sportsbook are available at Ticketmaster Verified Resale, the official resale partner of the NHL. In addition, tickets to the 2024 Hyundai NHL Fan Fair, the official fan festival of the 2024 NHL All-Star Weekend, are available for purchase at NHL.com/FanFair while supplies last. NHL All-Star Thursday is open to the public and tickets are available here.

Here are the top 15 skaters and top eight goalies in the fan vote as of Tuesday morning.

{coyotes} Schmaltz scores with less than a minute left in OT, lifts Coyotes past Bruins 4-3

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) The Arizona Coyotes have thrived on a feisty, hard-nosed mentality during a surprisingly good season, but that reputation was wavering some after three straight home blowouts.

Nick Schmaltz's goal with less than a minute left in overtime gave the Coyotes a jolt they needed badly.

Schmaltz's 13th goal of the season came with 55.6 seconds remaining in extra time and Arizona edged the Boston Bruins 4-3 on Tuesday night. The center's shot found the far side of the net, beating Jeremy Swayman, who entered the game midway through overtime after Linus Ullmark left with an injury.

Arizona's Connor Ingram had 30 saves, including a few impressive stops in overtime.

"We pride ourselves on working hard and being a hard team to play against, no matter the result," Schmaltz said. "The last couple games we got away from that and the score got pretty lopsided. These are tough days of the season, guys are banged up, everyone's feeling a little something. But we get paid to do this, so you've got to be able to bring it every night."

The Coyotes pushed ahead 3-2 early in the third period when Mattias Maccelli scored on a rebound. Lawson Crouse got the play started on a breakaway and his wrist shot bounced off Ullmann, giving Maccelli the easy opportunity to get his seventh goal of the season.

Jake DeBrusk responded with Boston's second power play goal of the night, making it 3-all with 14:56 remaining, which held until the end of regulation.

The Bruins have lost three of their last four.

"You've got to bring it right from the puck drop, especially against the team that can make you pay if you're not ready to go," Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy said.

Boston's David Pastrnak got the scoring started on a power play less than five minutes into the game, smacking a well-placed shot into the top right corner of the net, just over the shoulder of Ingram. It was his 25th goal of the season.

Clayton Keller tied it up for Arizona on its own power play goal midway through the second period. Keller's initial shot bounced off Ullmark, but the forward corralled the rebound and scored.

Boston responded less than a minute later to take a 2-1 lead when Jesper Boqvist scored his first goal of the season and first for the Bruins, hitting a high wrister past Ingram. The 25-year-old spent his first four seasons with the New Jersey Devils.

The back-and-forth continued late in the second period when Arizona's Dylan Guenther beat Ullmark with a low wrister. Logan Cooley got the assist.

The 20-year-old Guenther has scored a goal in each of his first two games since being called up from Tucson. Coyotes coach Andre Tourigny said he's already got a lot of confidence in him.

"You see the way we use him - words don't mean much, especially early in 2024, I think actions speak louder than words," Tourigny said. "Same thing as a coach, you put him in that position. I know the organization loves him."
