{coyotes} Keller hints at future Utah name, thinking playoffs in first year

In the move from Arizona to Salt Lake City in the off-season, the Utah Hockey Club decided to forego having a name in its inaugural season.

However, Utah forward Clayton Keller dropped a hint of what it could be, starting in 2025-26, at the NHL North American Players Media Tour on Wednesday.

"It sounds like it's going to be the Yeti, but I don't know," Keller told NHL.com. "We'll see what happens. Whatever they choose, I think it'll be a good one.

"It's just part of the excitement of being part of something new."

Taken seventh overall by the Arizona Coyotes in 2016, Keller is heading into his eighth NHL season and it will the first time he is not opening camp in the desert. He feels the nerves of starting a new season in a different place but excited at the new opportunity in Utah.

"You're excited to be with the guys again," Keller said. "You're excited to compete again. And now, with this situation, going into a new situation, a new fan base, things like that, I think it's super exciting."

Keller saw his new hockey home for the first time on April 24, five days after the franchise was awarded. The former Coyotes players and management were greeted with more than 12,000 fans at the Delta Center.

The 26-year-old visited the city a couple times over the summer but is now there full time with training camp set to open next week.

"I've been there for a couple of weeks now and the living seems super easy and convenient," he said. "Everything seems close. We all live within 10 minutes of each other.

"I really think it's going to be an easy transition for sure."

Playoffs on Keller's mind

One thing Keller hopes to see change in Utah is success on the ice.

In his first eight seasons, Keller has played in the postseason just once, back in 2019-20 when the Coyotes beat the Nashville Predators in a five-game series in the qualifying round established during the NHL's bubble playoffs at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Coyotes lost in the first round to the Colorado Avalanche and haven't been back since.

Keller had 33 goals and 76 points in 78 games last season as the Coyotes finished seventh in the Central Division for the second year in a row.

However, he will have some more help this season as Utah made a pair of trades to solidify its blueline, bringing in two-time Stanley Cup champion Mikhail Sergachev from Tampa Bay and 27-year-old defenceman John Marino from the New Jersey Devils.

"Our core guys have developed, a good coach in the locker room," Keller said. "We have a lot of young players who are coming in and are ready to take that next step. We've done a good job of helping them and guiding them in the right direction. And adding guys like Marino and Sergachev who have had playoff success is really going to help.

"The playoffs are definitely on our minds for sure."

{coyotes} Keller ready for 'super exciting' 1st season for Utah Hockey Club

LAS VEGAS -- Asked if he has a suggestion for the name of the fledgling Utah Hockey Club, Clayton Keller seems to have an idea of what it might end up being.

"It sounds like it's going to be the Yeti, but I don't know," the forward said at the NHL North American Players Media Tour on Wednesday. "We'll see what happens. Whatever they choose, I think it'll be a good one.

"It's just part of the excitement of being part of something new."

Whether the 26-year-old proves to be right about the Yeti, he, like the rest of the hockey world, will have to wait a while to see if that is, in fact, the case. The franchise, which is preparing for its inaugural season, has opted to hold off on a name until next year.

Fortunately for the team's eager fanbase, they didn't have to wait that long to have Utah's players step onto the ice for the first time, name or no name.

Indeed, that happened Wednesday when Utah's rookie camp opened at the renovated Kearns Olympic Oval in Salt Lake City. Then, next week, veterans like Keller will officially report to training camp in what he hopes will be the start of a successful pro sports franchise legacy.

He says he always gets butterflies whenever camp is just around the corner. But the churning in his gut, he admits, has reached an entire new level these days, thanks to the nervous anticipation of being part of Utah's first year

"You're excited to be with the guys again," Keller said. "You're excited to compete again. And now, with this situation, going into a new situation, a new fan base, things like that, I think it's super exciting.

"To be able to be part of something like this is really cool. I know the fans are stoked and so are we.

"We kind of saw the enthusiasm that is in store for us when we first came out here back in April."

On April 24, five days after the franchise had been established, the players walked onto the stage at Delta Center in Salt Lake City and were introduced to more than 12,000 cheering fans who welcomed them to Utah. For players, coaches and management who had spent the 2023-24 season in Arizona with the Coyotes, it was an overwhelming moment.

"It actually started when we arrived at the airport in Salt Lake," he said. "There were tons of families there and lots of kids looking for autographs and photos.

"We kind of didn't know what the rink would be like. But when we walked in and saw that many people, it was definitely crazy and super exciting. It's very motivating to play in front of a new fan base. They're super excited for hockey. It was a couple of awesome days there."

Over the summer he had the opportunity to visit Salt Lake City a couple of more times and was impressed with his new hockey home.

"I've been there for a couple of weeks now and the living seems super easy and convenient," he said. "Everything seems close. We all live within 10 minutes of each other.

"I really think it's going to be an easy transition for sure."

On the ice as well as off, thanks to some additions Utah made during the offseason.

On June 29 Utah acquired 26-year-old defenseman Mikhail Sergachev from the Tampa Bay Lightning for defenseman J.J. Moser, forward Conor Geekie, pick No. 199 in the 2024 NHL Draft and a second-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft.

It also acquired 27-year-old defenseman John Marino and pick No. 153 in the 2024 draft from the New Jersey Devils for the 49th pick and a second-round selection in the 2025 draft.

Those moves have Keller dreaming of having postseason games in Utah.

"Our core guys have developed, a good coach in the locker room," he said. "We have a lot of young players who are coming in and are ready to take that next step. We've done a good job of helping them and guiding them in the right direction. And adding guys like Marino and Sergachev who have had playoff success is really going to help.

"The playoffs are definitely on our minds for sure."

Keller will be looked upon to be one of the players to lead Utah to the playoffs. He had 76 points (33 goals, 43 assists) in 78 games with the Coyotes last season and will be looking to improve on those numbers in Utah.

That mission will begin on Oct. 8 when the franchise will play its first regular-season game against the visiting Chicago Blackhawks. The team will play its first preseason game at Delta Center against the St. Louis Blues on Sept. 22.

"We can't wait," Keller said. "And I know the fans can't either."

{coyotes} Gartner to become chairman of Hockey Hall of Fame, replacing McDonald

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

Mike Gartner will become the next chairman of the Hockey Hall of Fame, it was announced Monday.

The 64-year-old will replace Lanny McDonald when the latter's 10-year term expires in June 2025. He has been on the selection committee since 2009.

"Lanny has been an incredible leader for everyone involved with the Hockey Hall of Fame over the past 10 years," Gartner said. "I look forward to continuing his excellent work carrying out the Hall's mission of both honoring individuals who have brought special distinction to the game while preserving and telling the story of hockey's rich history."

Gartner was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2001. The forward played 19 NHL seasons from 1979-98 and had 1,335 points (708 goals, 627 assists) in 1,432 games for the Washington Capitals, Minnesota North Stars, New York Rangers, Toronto Maple Leafs and Phoenix Coyotes. He was the No. 4 pick by the Capitals at the 1979 NHL Draft.

Gartner will assume the role of chair-elect Oct. 1.

McDonald was inducted in 1992. The forward had 1,006 points (500 goals, 506 assists) in 1,111 games from 1973-89 with the Maple Leafs, Colorado Rockies and Calgary Flames. The 71-year-old was the No. 4 pick by Toronto at the 1973 NHL Draft.

"I am thrilled to pass the torch to Mike, whose stature as an honored member will bring continuity and strong leadership during this transitional period for the Hockey Hall of Fame," McDonald said. "His experience and perspective in the business of hockey and longtime service on the selection committee will be a tremendous asset to the Board."

{coyotes} Doan aims to build legacy with Utah Hockey Club similar to father’s with Coyotes

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

ARLINGTON, Va. -- Putting on the Utah Hockey Club's full home uniform for the first time at the 2024 NHLPA Rookie Showcase on Wednesday gave Josh Doan another reason to get excited about the upcoming season.

"It looks good," the 22-year-old forward said of the predominantly black kit with white and light blue striping and white lettering and numbers. "It's definitely something we were all excited to see for the first time, so it's pretty cool."

There will be a lot of firsts for Doan and his teammates in Utah's inaugural season after the team officially joined the NHL on June 13 and purchased the contracts of Arizona Coyotes executives, coaches and players. The move is a little bittersweet for Doan, though.

He grew up in Arizona, where his father, Shane Doan, played for the Coyotes for 20 seasons (1996-2017) and is the Coyotes/Winnipeg Jets franchise's leader in games (1,540), goals (402), assists (570) and points (972).

"It's weird," Josh Doan said. "Obviously, it's hard seeing a hometown team leave, but being on the other end of it and being part of a team, it's something I think that's only going to benefit the NHL and the team right now with what the circumstances were in Arizona at the time. So, I'm excited for Utah and to kind of experience a new city and see what it's like."

The move also represents an opportunity for Doan to establish his own legacy in a new city separate from what his father accomplished with the Coyotes. Shane Doan went through a similar change when the Jets moved to Phoenix to become the Coyotes following his rookie season of 1995-96.

"I've talked to him a lot about that, about how he had to move when he was a rookie and join a new city and a new organization with Winnipeg moving to Arizona," Josh Doan said. "He told me to embrace it and welcome everybody. It's pretty easy to watch hockey now on TV, so people are getting used to the game there. But to finally have your own team to cheer for and a local team to cheer for is something that a lot of the people in Utah have been looking forward to for a long time.

"So, it's something that we're excited for them, and hopefully, we win some hockey games for them."

A second-round pick (No. 37) by Arizona in the 2021 NHL Draft, Doan debuted in the League near the end of last season, finishing with nine points (five goals, four assists) in 11 games. That included two goals in a 6-2 win against the Columbus Blue Jackets in his first game on March 26.

He hopes to build on that this season but knows he still has work to do to establish himself and earn a full-time job with Utah.

"The main focus point for me is to prove that I can be someone they can trust all over the ice and play as much as I can," said Doan, who had 46 points (26 goals, 20 assists) in 62 games with Tucson of the American Hockey League last season before he was called up. "Obviously, the goal-scoring will come with playing and getting comfortable, but it's one of those things where you've got to earn trust to play to begin with.

"So, that's my main goal out of camp is to prove that I can continue to play at that level throughout the year."

Doan is part of a collection of young players who represent a promising future for Utah as it nears the payoff of a rebuild that enters its fourth season. That group also includes forwards Logan Cooley, 20, Dylan Guenther, 21, Matias Maccelli, 23, and Jack McBain, 24, and defenseman Michael Kesselring, 24, who each has played in the NHL already, and prospects such as forwards Tij Iginla, 18, and Cole Beaudoin, 18, and defenseman Maveric Lamoureux, 20.

"We're kind of growing together as a group and living together and being around each other as much as you can," Doan said. "It's something that we're excited to see what we can do. We also have the right guys above that are a little bit older. It's crazy to say they're older because they're still so young, but guys like (Clayton) Keller and (Nick) Schmaltz, they've been around now, and they've seen the rebuild and they want to win hockey games.

"They make sure we know that there's a mindset of we need to win, and we need to do it quickly because it's been a long, long time losing, which isn't very fun."

After Arizona missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs the past four seasons, younger veterans such as forwards Keller, 26, Schmaltz, 28, and Lawson Crouse, 27, are eager for Utah to take the next step and compete for a postseason spot. To help, Utah was aggressive in the offseason by acquiring defenseman Mikhail Sergachev in a trade with the Tampa Bay Lightning and defenseman John Marino in a trade with the New Jersey Devils before signing defenseman Ian Cole (one-year contract) and forward Kevin Stenlund (two years).

Sergachev won the Stanley Cup twice with Tampa Bay (2020, 2021), Cole won it twice with the Pittsburgh Penguins (2016, 2017) and Stenlund won it last season with the Florida Panthers.

"Obviously, that was the main goal, to go get guys that know how to win and have been in winning locker rooms," Doan said. "So, as a group, we're all excited to see guys like that come in and know that this is a team that is looking to win and make the playoffs, and we're going to have fun doing it."

{coyotes} Goligoski retires from NHL after 17 seasons

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

Alex Goligoski retired from the NHL on Thursday after 17 seasons.

The 39-year-old defenseman had 475 points (87 goals, 388 assists) in 1,078 regular-season games for the Pittsburgh Penguins, Dallas Stars, Arizona Coyotes and Minnesota Wild. He had 21 points (seven goals, 14 assists) in 47 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

Goligoski signed a one-year, $5 million contract with the Wild on July 28, 2021, and played the final three seasons of his NHL career near his native Grand Rapids, Minnesota. He had 10 assists and was minus-8 in 36 games last season.

"I think I've known for a while," Goligoski told The Athletic. "Do you hang around and see if some team wants to throw some money at you? I have no desire to move my family. No desire to go by myself and do all that. That's the most amazing thing about finishing in Minnesota. It makes it easier to say, 'Hey, I'm good.'

"I think it's the longevity of it, honestly. I can totally see where it'd be very difficult if you're not planning on being done, where it's like you don't get a contract but you're still younger. It feels to me like I've had my fun, I've done it long enough. I'm good to step away and move on."

Goligoski was selected by Pittsburgh in the second round (No. 61) of the 2004 NHL Draft and played 45 regular-season games and two postseason games to get his name on the Cup after Pittsburgh's seven-game win against the Detroit Red Wings. He was traded to the Stars by the Penguins for James Neal and Matt Niskanen on Feb. 21, 2011, and signed a five-year contract with the Coyotes on June 22, 2016, six days after he was sent to Arizona by Dallas.

He played his 1,000th NHL game for the Wild, a 4-3 overtime win against the Vancouver Canucks on Oct. 20, 2022.
