{coyotes} NHL, NHLPA move closer to CBA extension

The NHL and NHLPA are continuing to move closer to a CBA extension, TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun reports.

The two sides have been meeting in Florida during the Stanley Cup Final and, while issues remain, there is hope that a deal gets consummated sooner than later.

LeBrun notes there is hope that one is completed ahead of the Board of Governors meeting set for June 25.

The current CBA was originally signed in 2013 with a four-year extension ratified in 2020. It is set to expire on Sept. 15, 2026.

"We're having good ongoing conversations," NHLPA executive director Marty Walsh said at the outset of the Stanley Cup last week. "Right now, this time of year's hard because you're in the Stanley Cup payoffs and Stanley Cup. But it's moving steady. It's moving forward and I feel good where we are and we'll see what happens. It gets complicated at certain times, any collective bargaining agreement, but it's not where it was in the past here or what you see in national disputes between organized labour and workers and companies."

These are the first negotiations with Walsh who succeeded Donald Fehr as NHLPA head in 2023. A former mayor of Boston, Walsh previously served as the United States Secretary of Labour under President Joe Biden from 2021 to 2023.

The Utah Mammoths are signing forward Ben McCartney to a two-year, two-way contract worth an annual average value of $775,000 at the NHL level, the team announced Wednesday.

McCartney, 23, finished with 16 goals and 17 assists for the AHL's Tucson Roadrunners in 2024-2025. He tied for the team lead in points (three) in three playoff games.

The Macdonald, Man., native previously signed a one-year, two-way contract with Utah in 2024.

McCartney was drafted by the Arizona Coyotes in the seventh round of the 2020 NHL Draft.

In 2021, McCartney made his NHL debut with the Coyotes. He skated in two games.

{coyotes} NHL’s state income tax debate heats up with the Florida Panthers back in the Stanley Cup Final

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — The Florida Panthers are two wins away from becoming the fifth Stanley Cup champion in the past six years from a U.S. state with no income tax.

The run has made taxes something of a hot topic around the league. Many contenders going deep in the playoffs come from Sun Belt locales, but the financial benefit is one advantage of many for them in attracting and retaining players. Or is it?

"The tax thing is marginal at best, and I think the real reasons are that we're trying to do figure out a way to do our best to try to win," Florida general manager Bill Zito said, adding that team ownership and coach Paul Maurice are also key assets. "The sun doesn't kill us. It's a nice environment to live in. It's a good place for families. It's a good place for singles. It's got a little something for everybody,"

Commissioner Gary Bettman said before the final he "hates the issue," and that was evident Monday night on TNT when retired player-turned-analyst Paul Bissonnette suggested tax problems should be addressed in the next collective bargaining agreement. Bettman called it ridiculous and rhetorically asked if the league should subsidize teams in places like New York and Los Angeles.

The NHL tax landscape

The Panthers, Tampa Bay Lightning, Vegas Golden Knights, Dallas Stars, Nashville Predators and Seattle Kraken are the six NHL teams out of 32 in a place with no state income tax. Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said some other franchises have raised it as a concern but added the league does not share that thinking.

"These imbalances have existed forever," Daly said. "There are so many reasons why a player may choose to play in a particular location for a particular team for a particular coach that have nothing to do with the tax situation in that market."

The union seems to agreed that nothing needs to be negotiated in the next CBA to mitigate varying tax levels. NHLPA assistant executive director Ron Hainsey, who played for seven teams over 17 seasons from 2003-20, cited a run of Cup winners in places like Detroit, Chicago, Los Angeles and Pittsburgh over a decade-plus span as a hole in the argument.

"I'm kind of baffled at times that this is the topic it is," Hainsey said. "To react this way out there because Florida and Tampa are having their moment here where they have the players, good teams, took less to stay — it's the same thing that's happened the previous 12 years with all these other things. So, when we talk about, is it really an issue, I'm not certain that it is."

Hainsey also pointed out that this is not a top issue in the NFL and NBA. Of course, hockey still has a ways to go to catch up with football and basketball player salaries, even with the NHL cap rising over the next few years because of revenues setting records.

Alan Pogroszewski, who has studied and worked with players on tax matters for more than a decade, said a flexible salary cap would account for the range of tax situations. His AFP Consulting found that since 2016, teams in places with no state income tax qualified for the playoffs at a higher rate, providing what he called "an innate-built-in tax advantage for several of these cities."

"It's a combination of many things," Pogroszewski said Tuesday. "There's more factors than just the amount of money that's spent. It's how it's spent. But when you come into an equal playing field and your dollar's worth more, then that allows you some leeway."

What do players think?

Brad Marchand, a Canadian who played in Boston for a decade and a half before getting traded to Florida in March, does not dismiss taxes as a factor in choosing where to play.

"The Canadian teams, most of them have an extremely high tax rate, and then the California teams, same thing: Those teams are going to have to pay more money to get certain players than others," Marchand said. "When you look at a team like Montreal, what are they 52, 54%? Versus a team like here or Dallas or whatever. That's a 15% difference. When you add that up, it's a tremendous amount of money."

Of course, money isn't the only motivating factor. Success for Florida, Tampa Bay, Vegas and Dallas directly coincides with Zito, Julien BriseBois, Kelly McCrimmon and Jim Nill being some of the best executives around and knowing how to evaluate talent and manage the cap.

Being able to golf in the winter does not hurt either, and some players prefer smaller markets with less pressure. Others are drawn to hockey-crazy places where fans care deeply and hockey is either the top dog or the only game in town.

The Edmonton Oilers, in the final for a second consecutive year, are the perfect example of that.

"The passion obviously that this fanbase has for their team is incredible," said Oilers forward Evander Kane, who has also played in Atlanta, Winnipeg, Buffalo and San Jose. "Once you actually get here and get to know your way around the city a little bit more, you realize there's actually quite a bit to do and it is a good spot for families and they have great summers."

NHL players get paid in U.S. dollars, even in Canada, taking some of the tax bite out of places like Montreal and Toronto with high tax rates because of the exchange rate. But that can also get cut into based on where guys choose to live.

"It helps while you're there, but also the living costs in Canada are extremely high, too, because you're taxed through the roof on everything: what you buy, what you sell, what you make," Marchand said. "So, yes, at the time, the costs are a little bit different but not much, and then when you move back, you have 20, 30% less money, so it absolutely plays a part."

{coyotes} NHL to host all-star style event at Islanders' UBS Arena in 2027

--

It appears that the UBS Arena is going to be a popular hockey destination in the coming years.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman spoke to media on Wednesday before Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final and noted that the league will host an all-star style event at the home of the New York Islanders in 2027.

This news comes after the UBS Arena was originally slated for an event in 2026, one that was supposed to resemble a traditional All-Star Weekend. But that seemingly changed in early May when it was reported that the NHL would instead plan an international event in lieu of the usual festivities.

The league's decision stemmed from the proximity of the event to the start of the 2026 Milan-Cortina Olympics. The thought was always to use New York as a jumping-off point for Milan, with players leaving from there to participate in the Olympics for the first time since 2014.

"We've concluded that whatever we do for (2026) needs to take into account that the players are going to be very focused on getting to Milan and playing in the Olympics, and we want to respect that," Bettman said Wednesday.

And not everyone was pleased by that decision, namely New York governor Kathy Hochul who wrote a letter to Bettman expressing her disappointment about the choice to hold a Winter Olympics kickoff event in place of an All-Star Weekend, adding it was made without consulting with the state and requesting the league "bring a hockey event with equal or greater economic activity and cultural value to the region in 2027."

It's safe to say that message was received. The NHL now intends to hold events at the UBS Arena in back-to-back years, still planning to host an Olympics kickoff in 2026 and then an all-star style event in 2027.

"We're going to make sure we do something," Bettman said in an April meeting with Associated Press Sports Editors in New York. "We'll have an event at UBS before we go to the Olympics. But then we'll do something that's more focused on a major hockey event for the following year."

As for how things may look for the festivities in two years, that's yet to be determined, according to Bettman.

Following the success of the 4 Nations Face-Off during the 2024-25 season, the NHL is open to exploring more non-traditional formats for a mid-season experience.

"We set a pretty high bar for All-Star weekends in all sports ... in response to the success that we've had," Bettman said. "So there will be an event (in 2027) at UBS, and we're still trying to figure out what we can do that will do justice to the level of interest and authenticity that we and the players created at the 4 Nations, so that's still a work in progress."

{coyotes} Bettman: Nothing done, but CBA talks in 'really good shape'

--

EDMONTON - NHL commissioner Gary Bettman says the league and its union are in "really good shape" with negotiations on a new collective bargaining agreement.

Speaking ahead of Game 1 of the Stanley Cup final rematch between the Edmonton Oilers and Florida Panthers, he added that this round of talks with NHL Players' Association executive director Marty Walsh are "no comparison" to past CBA discussions.

"We are having very constructive, professional, cordial dialogue," Bettman said Wednesday. "We started a little bit later than we had anticipated for a variety of reasons on both sides, so I don't have an announcement to make that we have a deal."

The current CBA, which was extended during the COVID-19 pandemic with the NHL's financial situation on shaky ground, is set to expire Sept. 15, 2026.

"We have more than a year to go," Bettman continued. "I think we're in really good shape, having really good discussions … we're in a really good place in terms of our relationship."

Walsh held a media scrum with reporters after Bettman's availability and called conversations "good" and "ongoing."

"It's moving steady, it's moving forward," he said. "I feel good with where we are, and we'll see what happens. It gets complicated at certain times — any collective bargaining agreement — but it's not where it was in the past here where you're seeing national disputes between organized labour and companies."

Walsh, who took over from former union head Donald Fehr in February 2023, added the league and players are working through "different pulls on both sides."

The positive tone is a welcome sign for fans of a league that lost the entire 2004-05 season to a lockout, and also went through labour disruptions that shortened both the 1994-95 and 2012-13 campaigns.

Asked directly on when a deal might be signed, Walsh replied: "We didn't start (negotiations) until April, so a slow start there … I'm not going to give any timeline on that."

OLYMPIC QUESTION

The NHL is set to return to the Olympics next year in Italy. Deputy commissioner Bill Daly said the league doesn't expect the International Olympic Committee or the International Ice Hockey Federation to change its ban on the participation of Russian teams, which means NHLers from that country, as things stand, will be barred from the first Games involving the world's best players since 2014 due to the ongoing war in Ukraine.

TALKING GROWTH

Daly said the NHL has received a lot of interest from markets looking for expansion teams — Atlanta and Houston are believed to be on the list — but it won't be going through a formal process to add to its 32 clubs.

"If somebody wants to essentially apply for an expansion franchise and has all the requisite elements that we would look for in an expansion franchise, we would raise it with the board of governors and see if they have any interest," Daly said. "There are some people we've talked to more than others, but there's a lot of interest, which I think we're gratified with."

{coyotes} 2025 NHL Awards will air prior to Game 4 of Stanley Cup Final

banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

NEW YORK -- The best players and coaches from the 2024-25 season will be celebrated in the 2025 NHL Awards, a one-hour special that will premiere on June 12, at 6 p.m. ET on TNT in the U.S. and Sportsnet in Canada, before Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final. Produced by NHL Productions and 45 Live/Texas Crew Productions, the show will be hosted by actor Isaiah Mustafa. The Hart Memorial Trophy and Vezina Trophy winners will be revealed for the first time in the 2025 NHL Awards program.

The show will highlight all NHL Award winners this season, some of whom will be revealed in a series of special surprise video announcements across all League platforms leading up to the June 12 program. The first player in the series so honored was Florida Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov, who was in a team meeting when he received the King Clancy Memorial Trophy and Frank J. Selke Trophy in a special presentation from several patients of Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital.

In addition to being an avid hockey fan and L.A. Kings loyalist, Isaiah Mustafa is an actor, former professional football player, and the reason Old Spice's sales skyrocketed 107% in 2010. Best known as "The Man Your Man Could Smell Like," Mustafa rode a horse straight into pop culture legend -- shirtless, charming, and casually holding two tickets to that thing you love and body wash, while redefining what a commercial icon could be. He currently stars as fan favorite John Sampson in the NAACP Award-winning Amazon Prime Video series Cross, opposite Aldis Hodge's Alex Cross.

The Stanley Cup Final begins on Wednesday, June 4, at 8 p.m. ET, in a rematch of the epic showdown between the Florida Panthers and Edmonton Oilers. All Stanley Cup Final games will air on TNT, truTV and Max in the U.S., and on Sportsnet, CBC and TVA Sports in Canada.
