{coyotes} Mike Ribeiro discusses buyout as he signs with Predators

TimeLife.com

Breaking Bad / The Walking Dead / Work From Home

NASHVILLE - The Predators continued to lock down the center position, signing pivot Mike Ribeiro to a one-year, $1.05 million contract on Tuesday.

The Arizona Coyotes recently bought out the 35-year-old veteran's four-year, $22 million contract. Much of that decision had to do with "behavioral issues," Coyotes general manager Don Maloney said at the time.

Speaking during a news conference at Bridgestone Arena after the Predators announced his signing, Ribeiro talked about Maloney's comments, said he had addressed his issues and was going to marriage counseling with his wife Tamara.

"I had a chance to really focus on myself and really learn about myself," Ribeiro said. "That's why I'm comfortable. What Mr. Maloney said – it shocked some people, my wife wasn't happy about it. I sat down, thought about it. I'm comfortable with myself now. I'm open with what happened or didn't happen with our marriage issues, and really I think I'm comfortable with it and not trying to hide it."

Ribeiro was a point-per-game player in the past, but more recently his production has been in decline. Last season he had 47 points in 80 games with the Coyotes after posting 49 points in 48 games the previous season with the Washington Capitals.

He conceded that his marriage problems contributed to his production last season.

"I was not committed to my job because of my issues. I just wanted the year to be over so I could go work on them and be a healthy person," Ribeiro said. "I think my head is really clear. I have my family with me right now, and we're ready to move forward."

Predators general manager David Poile intimated that Ribeiro, who is known as a slick-passing center, could work with forward James Neal on the first line. The Predators traded Patric Hornqvist and Nick Spaling to the Pittsburgh Penguins for Neal during the NHL draft last month.

Ribeiro was an NHL All-Star in 2007-08, the season when he set career highs in goals (27), assists (56) and points (83).

Poile said Ribeiro sought out the Predators, not the other way around. He visited the city over the last four days and found a house. The Predators and Ribeiro nailed down the contract late Monday, Poile said.

"For Mike and his family, this was the best fit," Poile said. "For Mike as a hockey player, he thought this was the best opportunity on the ice. For his family, they thought this was the best community for him and his family to make a home."

{coyotes} Domi determined to make Coyotes this season

Meet Christian Singles

The Fault in Our Stars / Divergent / The Descendants

SCOTTSDALE Ariz. -- The Arizona Coyotes development camp featured 39 players and enough familiar NHL surnames to ice a starting lineup.

Henrik Samuelsson, son of Ulf Samuelsson and the Coyotes' first-round pick in 2012 (No. 27), is coming off a 95-point season with the Edmonton Oil Kings of the Western Hockey League. Brendan Perlini, son of former Toronto Maple Leafs center Fred Perlini, was Arizona's first-round pick (No. 12) last month. Coyotes coaches Sean Burke and Jim Playfair got to put their sons, goalie Brendan Burke and forward Jackson Playfair, through their paces. And Kevin Ekman-Larsson, brother of Coyotes defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson, was one of the defensemen in camp.

But there is one player with the best chance to add another generation to his hockey pedigree very soon. The Coyotes are hoping forward Max Domi, son of longtime NHL forward Tie Domi, can supply some much-needed skill to the lineup.

The Coyotes saw a lot of offense leave during the offseason, including a buyout of the final four years of center Mike Ribeiro's contract and the free agency departure of Radim Vrbata.

Sam Gagner can slide into Ribeiro's spot as top playmaker, but the hope in Arizona is Domi, who had 94 goals in 187 games with the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League, can bring that skill set to the Coyotes lineup.

Coach Dave Tippett and general manager Don Maloney have a track record of not rushing prospects to the NHL. But Tippett made it clear on the first day of camp there were players on the ice, among them Domi, Samuelsson and hard-working center Tyler Gaudet, who he would not hesitate to add to the roster if they continue their strong play into training camp in September.

"I play guys I can win with," Tippett said. "I play to win. When you get to the NHL you should play to win, not play to hope you can develop kids. Developing kids is for the American league and junior. When we put a kid in, he's in there because he can win.

"You look around this camp and you see people with the skill to help you win."

Domi made a strong bid to make the Coyotes last season but they sent him back to London. He responded with 34 goals and 93 points in 61 games.

"I watched as many [Coyotes] games as I could," Domi said. "And yeah, you envision yourself on the ice, playing in certain situations and trying to contribute. I would have loved to stay here. But at the end of the day they had a different thing in mind, so they told me what to work on. I went back and hopefully addressed all that, and hopefully it will be a little different this year."

This year has a different feel for Domi. Instead of hopes, there are expectations from management. Making the Coyotes last season would have been a bonus. Not doing so this season, not showing the top-six skill he has shown elsewhere, would be a disappointment.

Domi, 19, said during camp he's ready to show what he has and what he's learned. Like his father, confidence is not in short supply.

"Having a year under my belt helps a lot, just knowing what it feels like and what it takes," he said. "Soaking everything in, being around guys like Shane Doan and Antoine Vermette, watching what they do. We all want to get there one day and you want to make sure you take advantage of everything that moves you along in that journey.

"At the end of the day I have to come to the rink and make the team. Whatever that takes, that's my goal."

{coyotes} Offseason grades: Sizing up moves by West teams

Platinum - Miranda Lambert / First Love - Jennifer Lopez

USA TODAY Sports hockey columnist Kevin Allen grades Western Conference teams' offseason moves:

Anaheim Ducks: A

General manager Bob Murray transformed the Ducks into stronger contenders by acquiring Ryan Kesler to be the team's No. 2 center. The Ducks' one-two center punch of Ryan Getzlaf and Kesler is formidable. Adding winger Dany Heatley on a one-year, $1 million deal is a good roll of the dice.

Arizona Coyotes: B-

With the buyout of Mike Ribeiro and the loss of free agent Radim Vrbata, the Coyotes have lost 36 goals and nearly 100 points from their offense. But the trade for Sam Gagner might bring back 50 points. They also added role player Joe Vitale and backup goalie Jason LaBarbera. There's work left to do here.

Calgary Flames: C+

They lost Mike Cammalleri and added Mason Raymond, and surprisingly added goalie Jonas Hiller for a good price (two years, $9 million) to create competition in net. They overpaid for defenseman Deryk Engelland (three years, $8.75 million), though he will fit well into coach Bob Hartley's system. Brandon Bollig fits Brian Burke's desire for truculence.

Chicago Blackhawks: A-

The Blackhawks are strong enough that only minor tinkering was required. They had no cap room, but GM Stan Bowman persuaded Brad Richards to sign a one-year deal for $2 million. The smart, savvy playmaker is a significant upgrade from Michal Handzus as No. 2 center. Bowman also eliminated distractions by getting Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane under contract.

Colorado Avalanche: B-

Given the strides the team made under Joe Sakic and Patrick Roy, it seems surprising the Avalanche would let Paul Stastny leave when he wanted to stay. But the Jarome Iginla signing is good because he offers goals, grit and experience. Acquiring Danny Briere for P.A. Parenteau also works because Briere is a proven playoff producer. Veteran Brad Stuart will help stabilize the defense.

Dallas Stars: A

Rather than wading into free agency, GM Jim Nill made a splash by acquiring Jason Spezza from the Ottawa Senators. Now the Stars have a one-two center combination of Tyler Seguin and Spezza. He also signed play-making winger Ales Hemsky to play with Seguin and Jamie Benn, although he also worked well with Spezza in Ottawa. Spezza might play with Valeri Nichushkin.

Edmonton Oilers: B-

Giving Benoit Pouliot a five-year, $20 million deal seems like overpaying, but the Oilers need size and depth up front. Nikita Nikitin (two years, $9 million) and Mark Fayne ($14.5 million over four years) will help the defense, but their salaries constitute overpaying. But the Oilers must overpay to persuade players to go to Edmonton. Teddy Purcell, acquired in a trade, brings size and scoring.

Los Angeles Kings: B

The champion Kings didn't need to do much, except re-sign Marian Gaborik, and GM Dean Lombardi accomplished that with an attractive $4.875 million cap hit on a seven-year deal. The only significant loss is Willie Mitchell, and championship teams sometimes have to make changes to make room for younger players.

Minnesota Wild: B-

The Wild need scoring, and Thomas Vanek has been one of the league's most prolific point producers the last several seasons. Despite his playoff struggles, he is an upgrade from Matt Moulson. The Wild have medical issues with their goalies but might have to wait until right before the season before they know where they stand.

Nashville Predators: B-

The Predators desperately needed a proven scorer and got one by trading for James Neal. They can raise (or lower) their mark, depending upon how they react to the announcement that Mike Fisher will miss four to six months with a ruptured Achilles tendon. The injury could force them to make it work with the Philadelphia Flyers on a trade for Vinny Lecavalier. Signee Olli Jokinen's best seasons are behind him, but he improves the team's size. Defenseman Anton Volchenkov, at $1 million this season, is an inexpensive third-pairing option.

St. Louis Blues: A

GM Doug Armstrong signed the best available center in Stastny and signed center Jori Lehtera from the Kontinental Hockey League. This will allow David Backes to move to right wing. Vladimir Sobotka's departure to the KHL hurts, but Armstrong tried to make up for it by bringing back Steve Ott.

Twenty players filed for salary arbitration and another three had their club file for arbitration. Many likely will settle before the hearing. A look at the schedule and the 23 players:  Bruce Bennett, Getty Images

San Jose Sharks: D

Although the Sharks want to change their look, it appears they'll do it primarily from within. They waved goodbye to defensemen Dan Boyle and Stuart and announced Brent Burns was moving back to defense. There's a lot of speculation about whether the Sharks will trade a major veteran such as Joe Thornton or Patrick Marleau, but that hasn't happened. Tough guy John Scott has been the Sharks' only free agent signing.

Vancouver Canucks: C

Ryan Miller improves the goaltending, but it's hard to say the team is better after trading Kesler. Even though the Canucks got center Nick Bonino and defenseman Luca Sbisa, Kesler was the best player in the deal. The Vrbata signing is intriguing. Dustin Jeffrey is a high-quality depth forward and Derek Dorsett is a desirable role player.

Winnipeg Jets: D

Fans might have been waiting for the Jets to shake up their core, such as trading Dustin Byfuglien, but they merely added role player Mathieu Perreault. They lost Jokinen and let Devin Setoguchi go to free agency.

Forward David Moss has signed a one-year contract with the Arizona Coyotes, the team announced Friday. Financial terms were not disclosed.

"David is an intelligent, steady, reliable player who fits into our style of play," Coyotes general manager Don Maloney said in a statement. "We are pleased David decided to re-sign with us in Arizona."

A seventh-round pick (No. 220) of the Calgary Flames in the 2001 NHL Draft, Moss has played the past two seasons with the Coyotes. The University of Michigan product scored eight goals and 22 points in 79 games last season. In 441 NHL games with the Flames and Coyotes, he has 74 goals, 166 points and 133 penalty minutes.

Moss won a bronze medal with the United States at the 2013 IIHF World Championship, scoring four goals and seven points in 10 games.
