{coyotes} NHL considering penalty for failed challenge for offside

CHICAGO (AP) -- The NHL is considering issuing a minor penalty for a failed coach's challenge for offside.

The penalty would be instead of losing a timeout for a failed challenge under the current rules. The league's general managers discussed the possible change at a meeting Thursday ahead of this weekend's NHL draft in Chicago.

Replay reviews for possible offside have attracted attention in the playoffs the past two years. Penguins coach Mike Sullivan got a Nashville goal wiped out in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final in May. St. Louis star Vladimir Tarasenko had a playoff goal wiped out by a razor-thin offside ruling during a series against Chicago in 2016.

NHL executive Colin Campbell says the next stop for the possible rule change is the league's competition committee.

{coyotes} 2017-18 NHL schedule released

NEW YORK -- The NHL's 2017-18 regular season will commence Wednesday, Oct. 4, with a four-game slate, highlighted by the Pittsburgh Penguins raising their fifth Stanley Cup championship banner before facing the St. Louis Blues at PPG Paints Arena. The 1,271-game regular-season schedule - 82 games per team - will conclude Saturday, April 7, 2018.

The other three games on the first night of the 2017-18 season include the Toronto Maple Leafs visiting the Winnipeg Jets at Bell MTS Place; the Edmonton Oilers hosting the Calgary Flames in a Battle of Alberta at Rogers Place; and the San Jose Sharks playing host to the Philadelphia Flyers at SAP Center.

After closing Joe Louis Arena last season, the Detroit Red Wings will open their new home, Little Caesar's Arena, on Thursday, Oct. 5 against the Minnesota Wild.

The NHL's 31st franchise, the Vegas Golden Knights, will play its first regular-season game on Friday, Oct. 6 against the Dallas Stars at American Airlines Center. The Golden Knights will play their first home game on Tuesday, Oct. 10 when they play host to the Arizona Coyotes at T-Mobile Arena.

The Colorado Avalanche and Ottawa Senators will face off in a pair of regular-season games in Stockholm, Sweden on Friday, Nov. 10 and Saturday, Nov. 11 at Ericsson Globe in the 2017 SAP NHL Global Series™, marking the sixth time the NHL has traveled to Europe to play regular-season games and the first such time since the 2011 Compuware NHL Premiere™.

On Saturday, Dec. 16, the 2017 Scotiabank NHL100 Classic™ will feature the Ottawa Senators and Montreal Canadiens outdoors at Lansdowne Park in Ottawa. The game will pay tribute to a century of NHL® contests, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the League's first games played on Dec. 19, 1917. The game falls within the League's year-long NHL® Centennial festivities, Canada's celebrations of 150 years of Confederation, and the 125th anniversary of the Stanley Cup®.

On New Year's Day, the 2018 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic® will feature the Buffalo Sabres and New York Rangers outdoors at Citi Field, home of the New York Mets. This year's edition will mark the 10-year anniversary of the first NHL Winter Classic®, which continues the tradition the League established in 2008 of hosting a regular-season outdoor game at the onset of the new year.

The League's regular-season schedule will pause from Jan. 26-29 so the world's top players can gather in Tampa for the 2018 NHL All-Star weekend at Amalie Arena, which will include the NHL All-Star Skills Competition™ and the NHL All-Star Game. The 2018 NHL All-Star returns to a 3-on-3 tournament format after successful games in Nashville (2016) and Los Angeles (2017). Under the tournament rules, the NHL All-Star Game will be divided into three 20-minute games, with star players from each NHL division making up the four All-Star teams: Pacific, Central, Atlantic, and Metropolitan.

On Saturday, March 3, the Washington Capitals will play host to the Toronto Maple Leafs outdoors at the 2018 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series™ at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Md. Over the next several years, the League plans to stage a series of outdoor games at the venues of the other respective U.S. Service Academies.

The 2017-18 regular season will conclude Saturday, April 7, when 30 of the League's 31 teams take to the ice.

* Vegas acquired D Shea Theodore from Anaheim.

* Vegas acquired Buffalo's 6th-round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft (No. 161).

* Vegas acquired Boston's 5th-round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft (No. 142, previously acquired by Carolina).

* Vegas acquired F David Clarkson, Columbus' 1st-round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft (No. 24) and Columbus' 2nd-round pick in 2019.

* Vegas acquired F Reilly Smith from Florida for Vegas' 4th-round pick in the 2018 NHL Draft.

* Vegas acquired F Alex Tuch from Minnesota for Vegas' 3rd-round pick in the 2017 or 2018 NHL Draft.

* Vegas acquired F Mikhail Grabovski and D Jake Bischoff as well as NY Islanders' 1st-round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft (No. 15) and 2nd-round pick in 2019.

* Vegas acquired Pittsburgh's 2nd-round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft.

* Vegas acquired F Nikita Gusev, Tampa Bay's 2nd-round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft (No. 45) and Pittsburgh's 4th-round pick in 2018 (previously acquired by Tampa Bay).

* Vegas acquired Winnipeg's 1st-round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft (No. 13) and 3rd-round pick in 2019 for Columbus' 1st-round pick in 2017 (No. 24, previously acquired by Vegas).

ROSEN'S ANALYSIS

The Golden Knights have their No. 1 goalie. It's Fleury, who walked onstage and got a huge ovation from the crowd at T-Mobile Arena.

"I didn't expect that," Fleury told NBC Sports' Kathryn Tappen onstage. "That's really crazy. Obviously I'm excited to get this started."

Fleury should be the first face of the franchise and a perfect ambassador for the growth of hockey. There are few, if any, better people in hockey than Fleury.

Vegas also got two defensemen from the Ducks: Stoner, who was a pick, and Theodore, who came in a trade to influence the pick of Stoner. Theodore could be a cornerstone defenseman for years in Vegas.

Haula and Karlsson are centers who will compete for ice time. Both should be in the lineup on opening night.

Methot could be the Golden Knights' first captain or could be traded as early as Thursday. Methot has two years left on his contract and is coming off a strong season playing top-pair minutes with two-time Norris Trophy winner Erik Karlsson.

The Emelin pick is surprising, especially since the Canadiens didn't have to give up anything to Vegas to influence that selection. It's a straight pick by the Golden Knights, who either covet Emelin's physicality or have another trade ready to announce Thursday. Emelin has one year left on his contract. He could be a second-pair defenseman for Vegas or could get them future assets.

Perron should give the Golden Knights scoring on the wing, something owner Bill Foley and general manager George McPhee each said they would have. He also has one year left on his contract, so he could be trade bait now or before the NHL Trade Deadline.

Lindberg is one of my favorite picks. He's an intangible guy and was good in a bottom-six forward role for the Rangers. He's versatile; he can play center or the wing, can win faceoffs, can play on the power play and the penalty kill and can score. Lindberg is not a first- or second-line center, but he's a perfect depth center.

In Neal, the Golden Knights have their first-line scorer, if he remains with them. McPhee could have a trade lined up to flip Neal, who has one year left on his contract. If he's not traded, Neal gives Vegas another legitimate scoring option on the wing.

The Islanders gave up a lot to ensure Vegas wouldn't take some of the players they covet but did not protect, like forwards Brock Nelson and Ryan Strome and defenseman Calvin de Haan. So instead the Golden Knights took Berube, who may never play a game for them, but they also got the Islanders' first-round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft as well as their second-round pick in 2019, Bischoff and Grabovski.

The key here for Vegas is the draft picks and Bischoff, who signed with the Islanders in March after completing his senior season at the University of Minnesota. The Islanders are also getting rid of Grabovski's $5 million salary-cap charge for this season.

I first thought Garrison would be a player McPhee would look to trade immediately for future assets, but Garrison was here, in uniform, so that leads me to believe he's here to stay. He's entering the last year of his contract.

Vegas also got the negotiating rights to Gusev, Tampa Bay's second-round pick in this year's draft and its fourth-round pick in next year's draft for picking Garrison. That's a heck of a haul for McPhee.

It was also interesting that McPhee said Vegas selected and signed Engelland, a Las Vegas resident. Engelland could have become an unrestricted free agent July 1, but he gave up that option to play in his hometown.

In their first nine picks, the Golden Knights actually got 10 players. In addition to picking Marchessault from the Panthers, Vegas acquired Smith, who has five years left on his contract. They had to give Florida a fourth-round pick in 2018.

That's some good offense for Vegas. Smith scored 25 goals last season and 15 this season. Marchessault scored 30 goals this season.

Smith could be trade bait for Vegas if the Golden Knights can find a team willing to take his contract, which carries a $5 million NHL salary-cap charge. He gives McPhee options.

Pickard has a chance to be a decent backup this season for Vegas, which likely won't have a great defense but could still put together a better unit than Colorado had this season. I don't think he'll get flipped in a trade unless Vegas gets a good offer.

Carrier is the perfect pick for Vegas from Buffalo. He's 22 and has upside to be a power forward who can score. To get a player like that for no cost is simply good value for a new team that needs to build a young core.

Eakin has a chance to be a top-two center for Vegas. The center market for the Golden Knights wasn't strong, but he can be a 40-point scorer; he was one in Dallas in the 2014-15 season.

The Golden Knights got two big defensemen in Sbisa and Merrill. Each of them can block shots and play sound defensively, but has been inconsistent. I don't see either as a top-pair or even middle-pair defenseman, but Vegas might have to use one of them there.

Sbisa and Merrill are each signed through 2017-18, so they could also be trade bait for Vegas around the NHL Trade Deadline. That might be their best value.

{coyotes} Gary Bettman says NHL will call more slashing penalties next season

Commissioner Gary Bettman says the NHL will look to enforce slashing penalties more next season and is not interested in more expansion at this time.

Following the league's board of governors meeting, Bettman said pointless slashes to players' hands will be called more. Ottawa's Marc Methot and Calgary's Johnny Gaudreau were among the players to miss time last season with hand injuries from slashes.

In response to questions about Seattle and Quebec City, Bettman says owners weren't interested in considering another expansion process. Vegas, which will announce its expansion draft selections tonight during the awards show, begins play as the 31st team next season.

Bettman also says he doesn't believe anything is "amiss" with the Chicago Blackhawks and Marian Hossa, who won't play next season because of side effects to medication for a progressive skin disorder. Hossa can be placed on long-term injured reserve, giving the Blackhawks much-needed salary relief.

{coyotes} Auston Matthews sad to see Shane Doan's time with Coyotes end

LAS VEGAS -- Toronto Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews is struggling with the notion that Shane Doan's career with the Arizona Coyotes is over.

The Coyotes announced Monday they will not re-sign Doan, 40, who can become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. Doan has spent his entire career with the franchise, moving with it from Winnipeg to Phoenix in 1996, and has been the captain for the past 14 years.

"I'm pretty sad about it," said Matthews, who grew up a Coyotes fan living in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Matthews used to have posters of Doan on his bedroom walls. He eventually participated in summer skates with Doan.

Matthews' first game in his home state, Dec. 23, 2016, was also the night when Doan scored his 400th NHL career goal in his 1,500th career game. They took the opening faceoff against each other.

"I loved him growing up," Matthews said. "He was my idol. Then getting to know him, he's such an unbelievable person. As good as he is on the ice, the person he is off the ice really exemplifies everything about him. I'm pretty sad to see it, but he gives it his all and he's been with that organization for 21 years and he's made a big impact on and off the ice."

Matthews knew Doan's time with the Coyotes couldn't last forever, but it didn't make the news that came out Monday any easier for him to handle.

"Pretty sad to see that," he said.
