{coyotes} Martinook signs two-year contract with Coyotes

Forward Jordan Martinook avoided arbitration by signing a two-year contract with the Arizona Coyotes on Saturday. The contract has an average annual value of $1.8 million, according to Sportsnet.

Martinook, 24, was a restricted free agent and was scheduled for an arbitration hearing July 26.

Arizona's second-round choice (No. 58) in the 2012 NHL Draft, Martinook had 25 points (11 goals, 14 assists) in 77 games for the Coyotes last season. He has 50 points (20 goals, 30 assists) in 166 games since making his NHL debut on Dec. 6, 2014.

Martinook was among three NHL players who received qualifying offers from the Coyotes. Center Nick Cousins, acquired in a trade with the Philadelphia Flyers on June 16, signed a two-year contract on July 1. Forward Anthony Duclair, who is not arbitration-eligible, has yet to sign.

{coyotes} July 22: Two-time Cup winner Zubov born

THIS DATE IN HISTORY: July 22

1970: Sergei Zubov, one of the best Russian defensemen in NHL history, is born in Moscow. The New York Rangers select Zubov in the fifth round (No. 85) of the 1990 NHL Draft with a pick obtained as compensation from the Quebec Nordiques for their signing of free agent Guy Lafleur the previous summer, and he joins the Rangers for the 1992-93 season.

In 1993-94, Zubov's 89 points (12 goals, 77 assists) are tops on the Rangers, who end a 54-year championship drought by winning the Stanley Cup; he and teammates Alexander Karpovtsev, Sergei Nemchinov and Alexei Kovalev become the first Russians to have their name engraved on the Cup.

After three seasons in New York and one with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Zubov is acquired by the Dallas Stars on June 22, 1996. He spends the remaining 12 seasons of his NHL career with Dallas, helping the Stars win the Stanley Cup for the first time in franchise history in 1999. Zubov ends his career after playing 10 games in 2008-09, finishing with 771 points (152 goals, 619 assists) in 1,068 games, as well as 117 points (24 goals, 93 assists) in 164 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

MORE MOMENTS

2003: Center Mike Sillinger is traded twice in the same day. The Columbus Blue Jackets send Sillinger and a second-round pick in the 2004 NHL Draft to Dallas for defenseman Darryl Sydor. The Stars then trade Sillinger and a conditional draft pick to the Phoenix Coyotes for defenseman Teppo Numminen. The Coyotes are the ninth of 12 teams that Sillinger plays for during his 18 seasons in the NHL.

2008: The NHL, Chicago Cubs, Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings formally announce that the Blackhawks will play the Red Wings in the Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic at Wrigley Field on Jan. 1, 2009. It will be the third outdoor game in League history.

{coyotes} Iginla, Doan ponder retirement while searching for contract: report

Free agent forwards Jarome Iginla and Shane Doan want to play in the NHL this season but are having difficulty finding someone to sign with.

The veterans each told Kamloops This Week that they have been in contact with multiple teams.

"At 40, you want to be on a contending team," Iginla said last week. "With the parity in the NHL, there are probably 15 teams that have a chance. … You factor all that in, along with family. At this point, we're still uncertain."

Iginla had 27 points (14 goals, 13 assists) and was minus-30 in 80 games for the Colorado Avalanche and Los Angeles Kings last season.

"I know last year I had a tough year, probably the toughest of my career," he said. "I look at it as fuel. I think I can bounce back and score goals and help a team in different areas."

Neither Doan, also 40, nor Iginla has won the Stanley Cup. Doan advanced to the Western Conference Final in 2012, when the Coyotes lost to the Kings in five games. Iginla went to the Stanley Cup Final with the Flames in 2004, when Calgary lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning in seven games.

Doan, who has been the Phoenix/Arizona Coyotes captain since 2003, said he is looking for a one-year contract.

"It's pretty hard to find that," he said. "Pretty much impossible at this point. … We're just kind of waiting and seeing. We've talked to four or five teams."

The Coyotes decided on June 19 to not retain Doan after 21 seasons with the franchise, which relocated from Winnipeg after the 1995-96 season, his first in the NHL. He played last season on a one-year, $4.8 million contract, and had 27 points (six goals, 21 assists) in 74 games, his lowest total in a full NHL season since 1998-99. He is the Coyotes' all-time leader in goals (402), assists (570) and points (972).

Iginla is coming off a three-year, $16 million contract he signed with the Avalanche on July 1, 2014. They traded him to the Kings before the 2017 NHL Trade Deadline on March 1. After spending 16 NHL seasons with the Calgary Flames from 1996-2013, Iginla has played for four teams (also Pittsburgh Penguins and Boston Bruins). He ranks third among active players behind Jaromir Jagr and Joe Thornton with 1,300 points (625 goals, 675 assists) in 1,554 NHL games.

"If I keep playing, I look forward to that. I'll be ready," Iginla said. "If I don't, I've had a great run and I'm very thankful for that."

{coyotes} Tocchet putting Coyotes on fast track as coach

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- The Arizona Coyotes introduced coach Rick Tocchet and president Steve Patterson at Gila River Arena on Thursday.

Patterson was presented, in traditional style, with a new Coyotes jersey showing No. 17 on the back.

When Tocchet was invited to the podium, owner Andy Barroway pulled out a nearly 20-year-old, kachina-style, No. 22 Phoenix Coyotes jersey that longtime equipment man Stan Wilson had stored away, just in case.

"No wonder I couldn't skate then. These things were so heavy," Tocchet said.

It's a new era for the Coyotes, who reached back into their heyday of 20 years in the desert and hired Tocchet on Tuesday. But he said up front his coaching style isn't the same as the rough-and-tumble persona that was part of a short but memorable stretch with the Coyotes from 1997-99.

Tocchet won the Stanley Cup as a player and as an assistant coach, most recently back-to-back on Mike Sullivan's staff with the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Coyotes haven't made the Stanley Cup Playoffs in five seasons and had the third-worst record in the NHL last season, but Tocchet said he remembers a time when they were striving for a championship, something he's determined to revive as coach.

"We had a good, smart, competitive team that played a fast style and that's what this fan base wants," Tocchet said. "We had offensive players with skill and the fans really connected. When we played downtown (at America West Arena) and the building was electric, we had a good advantage."

Tocchet, who is replacing Dave Tippett, said he always planned to retire in Arizona.

"This is an underrated hockey market," the 53-year-old said. "I've seen a lot of old friends from when I used to live here and they are starving for a winner. Then you take the commitment by the new front office and ownership to a new start … you mix all that in together and it was an easy choice for me to come back."

Barroway grew up watching Tocchet play for his hometown Philadelphia Flyers and said he jumped at the opportunity to hire him.

"In my mind, he's a Philly guy like me: a scrapper," said Barroway, who became the Coyotes' sole owner last month. "Philly people have attitudes with a natural chip on our shoulder. I like his intensity and the fact that he's beloved, by the communities where he's played and by his players (as a coach). They all want to play for Tocc."

With so many young players, don't expect to see a fiery Tocchet too often, at least behind the bench.

"I'm not going to be a yeller and a screamer. I know a lot of people think I will be walking with a big stick and hitting guys with it," he said with smile. "There will be the odd time you have to blast guys, but I want to be a communicator and a teacher.

"Our roster is filled with people who will be feeling their way. There are going to be mistakes made. And when it happens, I'm going to put that guy back out there and not sit him on the bench. In the long run, that's the approach you have to have. I think the fans will understand."

{coyotes} Coyotes owner apologizes for bungling Shane Doan exit

Arizona Coyotes owner Andrew Barroway met the media on Thursday as the club held an introductory press conference for new head coach Rick Tocchet and new CEO and president Steve Patterson.

Barroway used the opportunity to mend some potentially burnt bridges, responding to a question about former captain Shane Doan with a candid apology.

"What happened with Shane, I have to take some responsibility for," Barroway said, according to AZCentral.com. "Shane's a bedrock of this community, and a pillar in the Valley for, you know, since we came here. I think we made the right hockey decision with Shane – I'm confident we did. But I certainly – in retrospect, I should've flown out and met with him myself and told him that, and for that I'm sorry.

"I apologize to Shane and the fans. I definitely could've done that better. With that said, it's time to move forward."

Doan was informed in June that he would not be brought back into the Coyotes' fold for the 2017-18 season. While the decision to part ways with the 40-year-old wasn't necessarily a shocking one, the manner in which Doan was turned away drew the ire of many Coyotes fans.

"I had been corporately fired," Doan said of the brief meeting with Coyotes general manager John Chayka in which he was told of the team's decision, according to AZCentral's Sarah McLellan. "That's the way it felt."

The former captain – who stands as the franchise leader in games played, goals, assists and points – wasn't the only one upset with how the situation was handled, as plenty of fans expressed their outrage on Twitter following news of Doan's exit.

While the situation remains a sore spot for those involved, the organization is turning its attention to the new faces joining them next season.

Former Pittsburgh Penguins assistant coach Tocchet, who suited up in the NHL for 18 seasons and previously served as part of Wayne Gretzky's coaching staff in Arizona, spoke about his vision for the 2017-18 Coyotes.

"This fan base wants to see exciting hockey, they want to see some offence, some skill," said Tocchet. "That's the way you have to play to be successful in the league today."

The addition of Patterson has more to do with the club's arena than the players plying their trade within it. Patterson brings a wealth of experience to the Coyotes, most notably due to his key role in helping the Houston Texans, Portland Trail Blazers and Houston Rockets all design and construct new facilities.

That experience should be crucial to helping the Coyotes navigate its present building issues. Originally locked into a 15-year deal with the city of Glendale for Gila River Arena, the club saw Glendale's City Council vote to opt out of the pact in 2015, just two years into the contract. The Coyotes then turned to Arizona State University to remedy the situation, only to have them pull out of an agreed-upon deal as well, leaving the Coyotes with continuing instability concerning their future.

"As I've said before: These deals are like vampire movies," Patterson said of the Coyotes' arena situation. "It's got to go in the grave a half-dozen times and hopefully come out a seventh time."
