{coyotes} Lehner stops 35 shots, Islanders beat Coyotes 3-1

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) The New York Islanders were a step slow and gave up an early goal - not the best way to start the second game of a back-to-back.

Once the Islanders scored, they started buzzing and rolled to their second win in two nights.

Robin Lehner stopped 35 shots, Anthony Beauvillier scored his fourth goal in five games and the Islanders beat the struggling Arizona Coyotes 3-1 Tuesday night.

''They came out really well, I think they were the better team the first 10 minutes,'' Lehner said. ''After that goal, after 10 minutes we started playing better.''

The Islanders beat Colorado 4-1 the night before, yet had more jump after Arizona scored the opening goal.

Arizona's Mario Kempe scored in the first period, but Joshua Ho-Sang answered and Brock Nelson put New York ahead with a goal early in the second.

Beauvillier made it a two-goal lead and Ryan Pulock had two assists for the Islanders, who withstood a late power play to win their third straight.

''It's big on the road like that, a couple good teams, to get those wins is important to us,'' Pulock said. ''We knew we had to buckle down and be a little better, and these two games we've done a pretty good job.''

Arizona had the early jump and finished strong, yet came away with another loss thanks to a shaky second period.

Darcy Kuemper stopped 29 shots for the Coyotes in their sixth loss in seven games since a four-game winning streak.

''The goals they got, it's just execution, a couple bad passes,'' Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet said. ''In this league, you have to be able to make an 18-foot pass and we didn't.''

Kempe scored by carrying the puck into New York's zone, circling back and beating Lehner glove side on a shot through traffic.

Lehner prevented it from being 2-0 Arizona later in the period with a sprawling save on Conor Garland's rebound attempt after stopping Clayton Keller's initial shot.

Ho-Sang scored shortly after a crisp power play expired in the first period, slipping in a loose puck from a sharp angle past Kuemper for his first of the season.

Nelson, who was injured against Colorado on Monday night, put the Islanders up 2-1 in the second by gathering a loose puck and beating Kuemper from between the circles.

Beauvillier made it 3-1 midway through the second, one-timing a pass from Josh Bailey after Arizona turned the puck over in its own end.

''A 1-1 game going into the second and you leave it 3-1, that was definitely the difference,'' Kuemper said. ''Guys are working hard and that's all you can ask. Mistakes are going to happen and right now they seem to be costing us.''

NOTES: Arizona plays at New York on March 24 to complete the season series. ... Islanders D Thomas Hickey did not play after going hard into the boards with his back against Colorado. ... Coyotes RW Vinnie Hinostroza (lower body) and C Christian Dvorak (upper) have resumed skating, but are not ready to return.

{coyotes} Foegele ends scoring drought, Hurricanes blank Coyotes 3-0

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) Carolina Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour gave his players a day off after a tough loss. They rewarded their first-year coach with a 3-0 win over the Arizona Coyotes on Sunday.

Warren Foegele scored his first goal since October and Petr Mrazek made 23 saves in his first shutout of the season to help the Hurricanes bounce back from a difficult loss to Washington on Friday.

''It just felt like the guys needed a mental break from the game of hockey,'' Brind'Amour said. ''We've been grinding a lot and not getting results. I think they came back today a little refreshed.''

The Hurricanes had coughed up a three-goal lead in Friday's 6-5 shootout loss to the Capitals. After Brind'Amour gave them Saturday off, they managed to come up with their second win in seven games in December.

''We got a quick day off and then it was right back to hockey, instead of waiting a week and thinking about that loss,'' Foegele said.

Foegele, a rookie left winger, scored three times in the first four games of the season. He had a goal in a 5-3 win over Vancouver on Oct. 9 but hadn't scored since, a span of 27 games.

Foegele beat Arizona's Nick Schmaltz to a rebound of a hard shot by Calvin de Haan and deposited the puck past goalie Adin Hill at 9:44 of the second period to give Carolina a 1-0 lead.

Foegele was relieved to end the drought.

''You kind of question your abilities and things go in your head that shouldn't,'' he said.

De Haan had two assists while Andrei Svechnikov and Sebastian Aho also scored for the Hurricanes.

Svechnikov made it 2-0 four minutes after Foegele's goal with a high shot past Hill from the slot. The Hurricanes caught the Coyotes in a line change, and the rookie right winger made them pay. Justin Faulk fed Svechnikov on the breakaway.

The Coyotes lost for the fifth time in six games. Their best scoring chance was in the third period. Alex Galchenyuk tipped in a shot at 4:07, but it was waved off for high-sticking.

Twenty-five seconds after Galchenyuk's goal was disallowed, Aho converted a neutral-zone turnover into his team-best 12th goal of the season.

Arizona coach Rick Tocchet was disappointed after his team had erased a three-goal deficit in 4-3 overtime win over the New York Rangers on Friday night and had played the Hurricanes even through the first period.

''The game was there,'' Tocchet said. ''If you look at the other goals, one was a horrendous change. The other one, the third one, was terrible. We had a couple of chances where they made a mistake and we don't score.''

NOTES: The Coyotes have the top penalty-kill unit in the NHL. They killed off all five of Carolina's power-play opportunities on Sunday. ... The Hurricanes are already missing a few forwards and Svechnikov left midway through the third period after getting checked in the back. Brind'Amour said the team will know more about Svechnikov's status on Monday. ''He tweaked something and came to the bench and tried to go but couldn't,'' Brind'Amour said. ''We'll find out.'' Forwards Jordan Staal and Micheal Ferland were out for the Hurricanes. Both have been dealing with concussion issues. Staal has missed five straight games and Ferland has missed seven of the past eight.

{coyotes} Stepan scores in OT to lift Coyotes to 4-3 win over Rangers

NEW YORK (AP) The Arizona Coyotes had every reason to feel the deck was stacked against them. They had lost four straight and trailed 3-0 in the second period against the New York Rangers.

However, instead of accepting another loss, Arizona rallied back to tie the score and Derek Stepan scored with 32 seconds left on the clock in overtime against his former team as the Coyotes beat the Rangers 4-3 Friday night.

''I'd be lying to you if I told you that didn't feel good,'' Stepan said of getting winner back on his former home ice. ''We never quit on it. We stayed with our system. I like this group's resiliency and character. Down 3-1 we could have easily coast through the third period but kept our foot on the gas pedal.''

Stepan fired a wrist shot off the crossbar 4 1/2 minutes into the extra period as the Coyotes beat the Rangers for the first time in 10 meetings. Nick Schmaltz picked up his 100th career NHL assist on the play.

Jordan Oesterle, Josh Archibald and Oliver Ekman-Larsson also scored for Arizona, and Adin Hill stopped 27 shots.

Kevin Hayes had a goal and an assist, and Pavel Buchnevich and Mika Zibanejad also scored to give the Rangers a 3-0 lead less than six minutes into the second. Henrik Lundqvist finished with 30 saves.

''It's just tough to accept this one. It's a game that was right there for us,'' Lundqvist said. ''That was a tough one, felt like we should have won this one.''

Oesterle got the Coyotes on the scoreboard at 10:42 of the middle period when his slap shot from the blue line deflected off Lundqvist's arm. Schmaltz record his first of two assists on the play.

Stepan found Archibald cutting past the hashmarks with 6:49 left in the third to pull the Coyotes within one, and Ekman-Larsson fired a sharp-angled shot over Lundqvist's glove to tie it 3:48 later.

''Everyone is tired of losing,'' Ekman-Larsson said. ''It could have easily gone the other way. I feel like we have a different group, nobody ever gives up on a play or in a game. That's what we want to keep building on. We want to get back in the playoff race and that's how you do it.''

Buchnevich opened the scoring when he hammered a one-timer at 4:01 of the first period. The Russian winger missed the previous 13 games with a broken thumb. Jimmy Vesey had an assist on the play to extend his point streak to three games.

Hayes tallied his eighth of the season with 3:34 left in the opening period. Mats Zuccarello delivered a well-placed cross-ice pass to set up the goal. Hayes posted a multi-point game for the third consecutive contest, and has three goals and three assists in the that span.

Zibanejad snuck a wrist shot past Hill at 5:48 of the second as New York converted for the third time while up a skater. Chris Kreider was planted in front to provide a screen, and Neal Pionk recorded an assist. Pionk leads the Rangers in power-play assists (10) and power-play points (12) this season.

''We have to figure it out,'' Rangers coach David Quinn said after his team squandered a three-goal lead at home for the second straight time. ''We have to get better.''

New York was 1-15 on the man-advantage in the previous eight games and Arizona entered the game with the NHL's top penalty killing unit.

NOTES: Rangers D Kevin Shattenkirk will be sidelined two-to-four weeks with a separated shoulder sustained in the previous game against the Lightning. ... The Rangers scratched F Lias Andersson for the first time since recalling the 2017 seventh-overall draft pick from Hartford of the AHL on Nov. 5. ... Rangers D Adam McQuaid did not dress but has been practicing in a regular contact jersey for the previous few days and is expected to return to the lineup in the coming days. ... Coyotes F Alex Galchenyuk missed a second straight game with a lower-body injury and is considered day-to-day.

{coyotes} Dec. 14: Orr gets first NHL hat trick

THIS DATE IN HISTORY: Dec. 14

1968: Bobby Orr scores three goals for his first NHL hat trick in the Boston Bruins' 10-5 win against the Chicago Blackhawks at Boston Garden.

Orr, 20, scores twice in the first period and once in the second. Each of the three goals is set up by a lead pass from forward Ed Westfall, who also has a goal and keeps Chicago's Bobby Hull off the scoresheet. Orr also has two assists, the second on Westfall's third-period goal.

Orr gets his hat trick midway through the second period, beating goaltender Dave Dryden from 35 feet. He receives an 80-second standing ovation and more than 50 hats are tossed onto the ice. Orr misses the chance for a fourth goal by shooting wide of an open net in the third period.

MORE MOMENTS

1933: Howie Morenz becomes the NHL's all-time leading goal-scorer when the 247th of his career moves him ahead of Cy Denneny. The milestone comes in the Montreal Canadiens' 2-0 victory against the Toronto Maple Leafs at the Forum. Lorne Chabot gets the shutout in a game played without a penalty being called.

1943: Boston's Bill Cowley sets up two goals (and scores one) in a 4-3 victory against Chicago to become the NHL's all-time leader in assists with 258, one more than former New York Rangers center Frank Boucher. Cowley retires four years later as the NHL record holder with 353 assists.

1968: Tony Esposito earns his first NHL shutout by making 25 saves for the Montreal Canadiens in a 1-0 victory against the Philadelphia Flyers at the Spectrum. It's one of Esposito's five wins with the Canadiens, who lose him to the Chicago Blackhawks in the 1969 intraleague draft; he wins 418 games with Chicago before retiring in 1984. He is inducted to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1988

1982: Marcel Dionne becomes the ninth player in NHL history to score 500 goals. The milestone comes when his second of the game gets the visiting Los Angeles Kings even with the Washington Capitals at 2-2. But the Capitals score five unanswered goals for a 7-2 victory.

1985: Ron Wicks referees his 1,034th NHL regular-season game, passing Bruce Hood for the most in League history. Wicks calls eight minor penalties in a 6-6 tie between the Minnesota North Stars and Toronto Maple Leafs at Met Center.

1997: Mike Gartner of the Phoenix Coyotes becomes the fifth member of the League's 700-goal club when he scores twice in a 3-3 tie with the Detroit Red Wings at America West Arena. Goal No. 700 comes at 10:41 of the first period when he beats goalie Chris Osgood for his first of the night. Gartner retires after the 1997-98 season with 708 goals.

2006: New York Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist plays against his twin brother, Joel Lundqvist of the Dallas Stars, for the first time in the League. Henrik makes 43 saves in New York's 5-2 win at American Airlines Center; Joel plays 5:44 and does not have a shot on goal in his fifth NHL game. It's the third twin vs. twin matchup in NHL history, the first since Ron Sutter (Quebec Nordiques) and Rich Sutter (Chicago Blackhawks) face against each other on March 14, 1994.

2017: The Vegas Golden Knights defeat the Pittsburgh Penguins 2-1 at T-Mobile Arena for their 20th win in 31 games (20-9-2), setting an NHL record for fewest games needed by an expansion team to reach 20 victories. Marc-Andre Fleury, selected by Vegas from the Penguins in the 2017 NHL Expansion Draft, makes 24 saves in his first game against his former team.
