{coyotes} Raanta stops 34 shots in Coyotes' 5-2 win over Senators

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) The Arizona Coyotes liked the way they were playing at the start of the season, even if pucks weren't going into the net. They were playing solid defense, creating good chances, and figured the goals would come.

Now that they're scoring in bunches and, for the most part, playing lockdown defense, the wins are piling up.

Conor Garland had a goal and an assist, Antti Raanta stopped 34 shots and the surging Coyotes outlasted the Ottawa Senators 5-2 on Saturday night.

''We've been playing the way we wanted to play really since the start of the season,'' Garland said. ''We didn't get those first two games, but we played pretty good.''

The Coyotes have allowed the fewest goals in the NHL this season and have revved up their offense since scoring one goal the first two games.

Kyle Capobianco had his first NHL goal and Oliver Ekman-Larsson also scored in the first period. Carl Soderberg added a goal in the third period and Lawson Crouse had an empty-netter for Arizona, which has 20 goals during a five-game points streak.

The Coyotes had some defensive lapses in the third period, but Raanta stopped 19 shots for his first win since last Nov. 2 against Carolina.

''When you haven't played in 11 months, it doesn't really matter what kind of game it is,'' said Raanta, who was injured most of last season. ''You're just happy to be back and playing, just enjoying the game.''

The Senators made a late push, pulling within two goals after Vladislav Namestnikov and Chris Tierney scored in the third period. Craig Anderson stopped 23 shots.

''They outplayed in the first period, didn't give us anything, we made some major mistakes that end up in the net, and then you're playing catch-up hockey the rest of the way, which is tough,'' Ottawa coach D.J. Smith said. ''The second and third period, I really liked our effort.''

The Senators earned a point in Thursday's 3-2 shootout loss to Vegas, but were shaky defensively, allowing the Golden Knights to pepper Andres Nilsson with 54 shots.

Ottawa as didn't give up as many shots against Arizona, but more found the back of the net.

Capobianco scored his first NHL goal midway through the first period on a shot from near the blue line that hit Senators center Namestnikov's stick and caromed past Anderson.

Ekman-Larsson scored 81 seconds later on a rebound after a shot by Clayton Keller bobbled across the crease.

Garland made it 3-0 midway through the second period, wristing in a rebound after a shot by Brad Richardson caromed out to the left faceoff dot.

Soderberg opened the third period with a power-play goal on a shot from the slot, but Namestnikov answered with a short-handed goal on a breakaway.

Tierney cut Arizona's lead to 4-2 with a power-play goal, one-timing a pass from Thomas Chabot in the slot. The Senators continued to push, but Raanta made some difficult saves and Crouse closed it out with his first goal of the season.

''We knew they were going to come out hard early and we didn't match their compete level,'' said Tierney, who has two goals this season. ''They dominated, got the lead and it ended up being too much for us.''

{coyotes} Kessel scores twice, leads Coyotes past Predators 5-2

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) Phil Kessel scored his first two goals for Arizona, and Christian Dvorak scored his third goal in two games as the Coyotes beat the Nashville Predators 5-2 on Thursday night.

Arizona (3-2-1), 3-0-1 in its last four games, went 3 for 6 on the power play. Darcy Kuemper stopped 23 shots and set a franchise record by allowing two goals or less in 12 consecutive games. Jakob Chychrun added his first goal of the season, and Carl Soderberg also scored.

Dante Fabbro and Nick Bonino scored for the Predators, who have lost two of three.

The Predators were without leading goal scorer Filip Forsberg, who came in with five on the season. Forsberg took a shoulder blow to his head in the Predators' 5-2 win at Vegas on Tuesday and was a game-time decision with a lower body injury.

Arizona lost defenseman Jordan Oesterle 17 seconds into the game when a shot was deflected off the back of his head. Oesterle was down on the ice for a few moments before being helped to his feet and to the bench.

The Coyotes didn't seem affected. Dvorak sent a shot from a difficult side angle high into the net past Juuse Saros at 6:06.

Kessel, a 13-year veteran acquired in a trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins in the offseason, finished off a power play give-and-go with Clayton Keller, scoring at 10:34 of the first.

Kessel scored again on a power play for a three-goal lead, with Keller assisting at 5:03 of the third. Nick Schmaltz and Derek Stepan also had two assists.

The Predators made it 2-1 at 3:13 of the second with Fabbro's goal. Ryan Ellis assisted on both Predators goals, giving him a team-high eight assists.

Saros blocked a breakaway attempt from the Coyotes' Derek Stepan at 9:13 of the second. Saros finished with 27 saves.

Chychrun, on another power play, scored on a left-handed wrist shot at 14:27.

The Predators managed only three shots in the first period. They are 1-1-6 in their last eight games in Arizona.

Bonino scored late in the third, then Soderberg put the game out of reach with an empty-net goal at the 17:10 mark.

NOTES: The Coyotes celebrated Noche De Los Yotes, a tribute to Hispanic heritage, on Thursday night. Earlier in the day, the team announced the formation of the franchise's first ever Latino advisory board, which is headed by majority owner Alex Meruelo. Meruelo has said he intends to build more fan interest in the Coyotes within the Phoenix area's large Hispanic population. ... The Coyotes played 59 minutes, 43 seconds of the game with five defensemen after Oesterle's injury. They were already without their top defenseman, Niklas Hjalmarsson, who is on injured reserve with a cracked fibula and could miss several months. ... F Michael Grabner played in his 600th career NHL game. ... Nashville's streak of five straight games with a power-play goal came to an end.

{coyotes} Coyotes beat Jets 4-2, get first win in Winnipeg

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) Nick Schmaltz knew the Arizona Coyotes' power play was going to finally click.

Schmaltz and linemate Christian Dvorak each scored with the man advantage just over two minutes apart and the Coyotes beat the Jets 4-2 for a rare victory in Winnipeg.

The Coyotes had lost 10 straight games in Winnipeg, since the Jets franchise moved from Atlanta in 2011.

Dvorak also scored at even strength.

''I don't think it was anything that changed,'' Schmaltz said of the power play that was 0 for 9 heading into the game. ''We were going in the right direction.

''I thought last game was better, we had the good looks and they just weren't going in, so we stuck with it and eventually they're going to go in.''

Schmaltz, who has scored in three straight games, added two assists for Arizona. Conor Garland also scored and Oliver Ekman-Larsson finished with two assists.

Arizona was 2 for 2 on the power play. The Jets were 2 for 6.

''We just didn't kill two penalties. That, to me, is the difference,'' Jets coach Paul Maurice said.

He also saw weaknesses in his team's penalty kill rather than strength in Arizona's power play.

''Those were their first two power-play goals of the year,'' Maurice said. ''We made mistakes, but we blocked four shots. Four. We blocked four shots tonight and that's a problem.''

Darcy Kuemper made 38 saves for the Coyotes. He has allowed two goals or less in 11 straight games, tying the franchise record set by Nikolai Khabibulin.

Mark Scheifele had a goal and an assist and extended his point streak to five games with his team-leading fourth goal of the season for Winnipeg.

Kyle Connor also scored for Winnipeg, and Josh Morrissey had a pair of assists.

Jets captain Blake Wheeler said the team wants to play well defensively and work from there.

''I think we're still trying to establish ourselves and figure out our identity as a team,'' Wheeler said. ''We're very much a work in progress.

''We're a competitive group and we've come to work every single day since training camp. That's a great thing to fall back on. Tighten a few things up. Also keeping in mind we've played quite a bit of hockey here to start the year.''

Connor Hellebuyck stopped 31 shots for the Jets, who were playing the second game of a five-game homestand and coming off a 7-2 loss to Pittsburgh.

The teams were tied 1-1 after the first period, but Arizona scored a pair of power-play goals and led 4-1 following the second.

With Coyotes forward Derek Stepan off for hooking, Patrik Laine blasted a shot that hit the post and Scheifele sent the rebound past Kuemper at 7:35 of the first.

Garland deflected a shot from the point by Ekman-Larrson with eight seconds remaining in the opening period to tie it.

Dvorak and Schmaltz scored with the man advantage just over two minutes apart in the second to stretch Arizona's lead to 3-1 at 7:21.

Jets defenseman Josh Morrissey had accidentally flipped the puck into his own net after Dvorak touched it.

Schmaltz then scored through traffic and Dvorak added his second goal of the game when he beat Hellebuyck on the glove side at 17:47.

With Garland in the penalty box for a high-sticking double minor against Laine, Connor flipped a backhand shot by Kuemper at 4:48 of the third to make it 4-2.

Winnipeg had another power play with five minutes left in the third, but failed to convert.

{coyotes} Burakovsky scores in OT, Avalanche beat Coyotes 3-2

DENVER (AP) Andre Burakovsky scored at 3:29 of overtime and the Colorado Avalanche beat the Arizona Coyotes 3-2 on Saturday night.

Pavel Francouz had 34 saves in his first NHL start, and Nazem Kadri and Tyson Jost scored less than two minutes apart as the Avalanche started the season with four wins at home.

Francouz was signed as a free agent in May 2018. His only two appearances before Saturday were in relief last season.

Antti Raanta was equally sharp in his first start of the season, stopping 29 shots. Michael Grabner and Nick Schmaltz scored for the Coyotes.

Burakovsky got the winner after a back-and-forth extra period. Burakovsky collected the puck close in and sent a high shot past Raanta for his second goal and second winner in as many games.

After nearly 50 minutes without a goal, the teams combined for three in a span of 2 minutes, 30 seconds.

The Avalanche scored first at 6:57 of the third on Kadri's first of the season. With Jason Demers off for tripping, Cale Makar took a shot from the point that Raanta stopped. Kadri grabbed the rebound on the left side, avoided defenseman Jordan Oesterle and beat Raanta high.

The second goal came 1:49 later when Jost, battling in front, knocked in another rebound, giving Colorado a 2-0 lead with his first of the season.

Grabner made it 2-1 41 seconds later with a blast from the right circle that beat Francouz to the top corner. The Coyotes tied it at 16:03 on Schmaltz's second goal of the season.

NOTES: Arizona RW Phil Kessel played in his 1,000th NHL game and 778th in a row Saturday night. Kessel is the 21st active player with a 1,000 games played and his consecutive games streak ranks third among current players. ... Avalanche LW J.T. Compher missed his second straight game with a lower-body injury. ... Coyotes LW Lawson Crouse was out of the lineup with an upper-body injury.
