NEW YORK / TORONTO -- El Paso, Texas, winner of Kraft Hockeyville™ USA 2020, will host the Arizona Coyotes and Dallas Stars for an NHL preseason game on Sunday, October 3 at 7 p.m. MT at El Paso County Events Center, Kraft Heinz, the National Hockey League (NHL®) and the National Hockey League Players' Association (NHLPA) announced today.

El Paso, which earned its designation as 2020's most-spirited hockey community in America after amassing the most votes in the online Kraft Hockeyville™ USA 2020 contest also won $150,000 in rink upgrades from Kraft Heinz and $10,000 worth of new equipment from the NHLPA Goals & Dreams fund. The game was not hosted in 2020 due to COVID-19.

"We are thrilled to participate in the Kraft Hockeyville game in El Paso," said Arizona Coyotes President & CEO Xavier A. Gutierrez. {coyotes} Sharks eyed Phil Kessel trade with Coyotes around draft

The Sharks must be sick of seeing Phil Kessel score on them.

Sportnet's Elliott Friedman reported last Thursday that the Sharks were interested in acquiring veteran Phil Kessel from the Arizona Coyotes around the 2021 NHL Draft, but such a move will not be happening.

Kessell, 33, isn't the player he once was but he still is a servicable veteran. And he might as well be called a Sharks killer.

The No. 5 overall pick from the 2006 NHL Draft scored 20 goals last season, 10 of which came against the Sharks. He scored 13 points in eight games against San Jose. That's 30.2 percent of his total points for 2020-21.

Kessel scored 43 total points last season in 56 games, and 38 points in 70 games the season before with Arizona.

It appears the Sharks' main focus now is keeping Tomas Hertl in San Jose for the long term.

{coyotes} Tocchet joins Turner Sports as NHL studio analyst

Rick Tocchet was hired by Turner Sports as an NHL studio analyst on Tuesday.

The 57-year-old was coach of the Arizona Coyotes the past four seasons, going 125-131-34 before it was announced May 9 that he would not return. He also coached the Tampa Bay Lightning from 2008-10, going 53-69-26. He won the Stanley Cup twice as an assistant with the Pittsburgh Penguins (2016, 2017).

Tocchet played 18 seasons in the NHL from 1984-2002, scoring 952 points (440 goals, 512 assists) in 1,144 games for the Philadelphia Flyers, Penguins, Los Angeles Kings, Boston Bruins, Washington Capitals and Phoenix Coyotes. He scored 112 points (52 goals, 60 assists) in 145 Stanley Cup Playoff games and won the Cup with the Penguins in 1992.

Turner Sports announced its entire studio and broadcast teams on Tuesday, which includes Brendan Burke and Darren Pang as a broadcast team, and Keith Jones as an analyst. Former NHL players Anson Carter and Paul Bissonnette will serve as studio analysts.

Turner Sports agreed to a multiyear contract with Wayne Gretzky to be a studio analyst May 26, and hired Kenny Albert and Eddie Olczyk to be the lead broadcast team for games this season.

The NHL and Turner Sports announced a seven-year media rights agreement April 27 that will have regular-season and postseason games televised on TNT and TBS starting this season and running through 2027-28. It will televise all Stanley Cup Final games in 2023, 2025 and 2027, one conference final series each season, and half of the first two rounds of the playoffs, plus 72 regular-season games per season including the NHL Winter Classic, the annual New Year's Day outdoor game, in each of the seven seasons of the deal.

That followed a seven-year broadcast agreement the NHL signed with The Walt Disney Co. and ESPN on March 10 that includes exclusive coverage of the Final on ABC in four of its seven years with the ability to simulcast on ESPN+ and additional ESPN networks.

Among the analysts hired by ESPN are Hockey Hall of Fame members Mark Messier and Chris Chelios, as well as Brian Boucher, Kevin Weekes and Cassie Campbell-Pascall.

The NHL regular season begins Oct. 12.

{coyotes} Canadiens acquire Christian Dvorak from Coyotes for two draft picks

The Montreal Canadiens have acquired forward Christian Dvorak from the Arizona Coyotes for a first and second-round draft pick.

The Coyotes will receive the better of either Montreal's or Carolina's first-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft along with the Canadiens' second-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft. If either the Canadiens or Hurricanes first-round pick are top 10 picks in the 2022 NHL Draft, Montreal will send the worse of the two picks.

The trade comes after the Canadiens declined to match the offer sheet from the Hurricanes for Jesperi Kotkaniemi. Montreal received a first and third round pick in return.

Dvorak played in all 56 games for Arizona last season scoring 17 goals and 31 points while winning 52.1 per cent of his faceoffs. In five seasons with the Coyotes, the 25-year-old has recorded 146 points in 302 career games.

The reason we chose to to to move him is because of what we could get for him, he was a huge piece of our team," Coyotes general manager Bill Armstrong said about the deal. "You know, people talk about his production of what you have to remember, how good he is off the draw. He can score and he can also play good defence."

Along with Dvorak's ability to play strong defensively, Armstrong believes he'll be a strong asset to the Canadiens on the power play.

"He does the little things that nobody sees that really make a difference. And it's just his ability to score from the front in and net in the power play," Armstrong explained. "He's going to be a good player for the Montreal Canadiens. And I think all the little things that he does, you know, he's going to be a coach's dream."

The Coyotes selected Dvorak in the second round of the 2014 NHL Draft. Dvorak has four more years left on his contract with a $4.45 million cap hit.

{coyotes} Coyotes to feature Kachina logo at center ice for first time

The Arizona Coyotes are going full Kachina this season.

For the first time in the team's 25-year history, the whole iconic logo will be at center ice, along with a Kachina-inspired design inside the red line.

The Coyotes have previously had the kachina head, a howling coyote and a crescent moon at center ice. The red line has also featured various designs, including mini Kachina logos.

The team posted a video of the logo getting painted on last week, as well as several photos of the finished product.

{coyotes} NHL reaches agreement to send players to Olympics in Beijing

The NHL is set to return to the Olympics in Beijing this winter after reaching an agreement with international officials, though the league and players have the opportunity to withdraw if pandemic circumstances warrant.

The NHL, its players' union, the International Olympic Committee and the International Ice Hockey Federation struck a deal Friday that will put the best players in the world back on sports' biggest stage in February after they skipped the 2018 Pyeongchang Games.

"It was not easy, but we did it," IIHF president Rene Fasel told The Associated Press by phone. "I'm really, really happy. When you see the last was 2014, and they would wait until 2026, so you have 12 years in between — that means we have a generation of hockey players that would not be able to play in the Olympics."

Even after the NHL and players agreed to Olympic participation as part of a long-term extension of the collective bargaining agreement last summer, the coronavirus pandemic and related costs threatened to shelve that possibility. Instead, the sides figured it out, allowing for the league or players to withdraw if virus circumstances change for the worse or there's an outbreak during the season.

As long as that does not happen, NHL players will compete in the Olympic men's hockey tournament for the sixth time in seven chances dating to 1998.

"We understand how passionately NHL players feel about representing and competing for the countries," NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said. "We are very pleased that we were able to conclude arrangements that will allow them to resume best on best on the Olympic stage."

COVID-19 insurance is not part of the agreement, though Fasel confirmed the IIHF will provide a $5 million fund for any lost salary because of the disease. Vaccinations are expected to be required, and players will have their contracts insured for injury.

U.S. coach Mike Sullivan called returning to the Olympics "such an exciting time for hockey."

He is not alone in that thinking.

Reigning NHL MVP Connor McDavid played for an under-23 "Team North America" at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey and has yet to play for Canada in a tournament of the world's best men's hockey players.

"Just to be able to represent Canada at the Olympics and compete for a gold medal would be an absolute dream come true," McDavid told the AP this week. "It's kind of been a long time since we've been able to play best on best internationally. I think for me, and I think for a lot of guys that were on that team, it's been a long time coming. We're obviously looking forward to going to the Olympics if we're all lucky enough to make it."

It could be the first Olympics for McDavid, U.S. star Auston Matthews, 2020 playoff MVP and two-time Stanley Cup champion Victor Hedman and many others. They didn't get the opportunity three years ago, when national teams were made up mostly of college and European professional players, except for the Olympic Athletes from Russia, who won the gold medal in Pyeongchang.

"The Olympics is one of the biggest dreams of mine and I haven't been able to participate in one — this might be the last chance I get," said Hedman, who was left off Sweden's 2014 Olympic roster. "When you get an opportunity to represent your country on the biggest stage, it is one of those things that you'll probably never forget. So yeah for me it is obviously something that I've been dreaming about my whole life and something I want to do before I hang up my skates."

In anticipation of a deal being reached, the NHL already scheduled a three-week break to take into account the Olympic tournament opening on Feb. 9. The league will still hold its All-Star weekend in Las Vegas before players fly to China on Feb. 6.

"It levels the playing field," said Hall of Fame defenseman Chris Pronger, who made his Olympic debut in 1998 and won gold with Canada in 2010. "It allows more countries to compete at a higher level. It showcases the sport."

NHL players at the Olympics became commonplace, with the IOC agreeing to pay travel and insurance costs and owners willing to pause the season for players to take part in the tournament. An entire generation of players grew up knowing of Olympics being a showcase for NHL stars.

"You have a dream of representing your country," said U.S. defenseman Ryan McDonagh of the Lightning. "The Olympic Games are such a unique experience, and I think they do wonders for the sport of hockey."

The IOC under President Thomas Bach would not pay assorted costs in 2018, leading the NHL to turn away from the Olympics and league officials expressing their concerns about interrupting the season. Fasel said officials worked off the 2014 agreement and then made tweaks because of the pandemic.

Players ultimately decided it was worth handling any virus restrictions in Beijing, which could go above and beyond the quarantined bubbles of the 2020 playoffs.

"I don't think there'll be anything there that we haven't seen before," Canada coach Jon Cooper said. "I do take comfort in the fact that we've been through all these different situations."

NOTES: Should the NHL opt out for COVID-19 reasons, Fasel said the Olympic tournament would proceed with participating countries sending a team made up of non-NHL players. Such a scenario would potentially handcuff the United States and Canada, based on a limited pool of players to draw from because the tournament would interfere with the Canadian junior and U.S. college seasons. ... With the deal in place, USA Hockey filled out Sullivan's staff of assistants, which will be made up of Nashville Predators coach John Hynes, former New York Rangers coach David Quinn, Penguins assistant Todd Reirden and former NHL goalie Ryan Miller, who retired after after an 18-year career last season.
