NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) The Nashville Predators feel like they're improving with each game, and that meant finishing off a long homestand with a seven-round shootout.

Cody Glass scored off the right arm of Arizona goalie Connor Ingram, and the Predators held off the Coyotes 4-3 Monday night.

''It was a little bit of nerves, but I'm a confident player and obviously I've played with Ingy for the past year,'' Glass said of being tapped to shoot. ''So I kind of knew what I was going to do and got fortunate enough to kind the change of pace on it, and obviously it went in net.''

Shayne Gostisbehere had a final chance to keep the shootout going. Nashville goalie Juuse Saros made a stick save to finish off the 1,500th regular-season victory for Predators general manager David Poile in his long career.

The Predators wrapped up a five-game homestand going 4-0-1.

Predators forward Matt Duchene was surprised to see the shootout go so long, if only because of how good Saros usually is.

'They did a good job of breaking him down because he's the best shootout, breakaway goalie that I've ever seen,'' Duchene said. ''But he did a great job sticking with it and taking one shot at a time. And our shooters did a great job, too. I haven't seen too many extra inning shootouts in a while.''

Captain Roman Josi had a power-play goal and an assist, tying it up with a slap shot near the blue line tying it up after Arizona forward Matias Maccelli tripped Alexander Carrier. Colton Sissons dropped the puck to Matt Duchene, who put a wrister over goalie Connor Ingram for a 3-2 lead at 1:31 of the third.

Mikael Granlund scored a power-play goal and had an assist. Josi also had an assist.

Josi hit the crossbar twice in overtime, the second on the man advantage after Lawson Crouse went to the box for holding. Nashville went 2 of 7 on the power play.

Nick Bjugstad scored twice and had an assist. His second goal came shorthanded with 6:44 left in regulation as he scored over Nashville goalie Juuse Saros' stickside, tying it at 3. Crouse also had a goal.

Arizona came in rested since a 4-1 loss in Las Vegas on Nov. 17, but the Coyotes now have lost four straight with eight more road games remaining before their next home game.

''You want two points, but we didn't lose the hockey game,'' Coyotes coach Andre Tourigny said. ''We lose in the entertainment (portion) of the game. For me, it's a 3-3 game as far as I'm concerned.''

Ingram fell to 1-5-0 making 24 saves against his old team. Ingram started the Predators' final three playoff games in being swept by eventual Stanley Cup champs Colorado last spring. Nashville waived him in October, and Arizona claimed him.

''He was great,'' Tourigny said of Ingram. ''He gave us a chance to win. He made some key saves at key moments. Really happy about his performance.''

Once Nick Schmaltz went to the box for elbowing Ryan McDonagh, Granlund put Nashville up 1-0 with his snap shot at 7:04 with his second goal this season on Nashville's third man advantage of the first period.

Crouse tied it at 1 on Arizona's second shot of the second off a nice pass from Bjugstad, and Crouse finished off the rush with a snap shot from just inside the left circle near the slot at 8:49.

Arizona had a chance to take the lead on the man advantage but Maccelli's shot hit the post with 5:52 left in the second seconds before Dante Fabbro's tripping penalty expired. Bjugstad pushed the puck past Saros' outstretched right skate at the post with 4 :04 left in the period for a 2-1 lead.

INJURIES

McDonagh took a puck to the face during the second period and went to the locker room for evaluation. McDonagh was back on the ice to start the third.

Nashville forward Tanner Jeannot appeared to take a stick from teammate Zach Sanford, but he returned to the bench. He took another high stick from Valimaki in the third, which set up Bjugstad's tying shorthanded goal.

Arizona defenseman Josh Brown suffered an upper-body injury and did not play in the third.

{coyotes} Chychrun to make season debut, Schmaltz back for Coyotes

--
banners Meal Ninja - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

Jakob Chychrun will make his season debut when the Coyotes visit the Nashville Predators (8 p.m. ET; BSSO, BSAZ, ESPN+, SN NOW).

The defenseman has not played since March 12, 2022, when he sustained an ankle injury in a loss to the Boston Bruins. He also underwent wrist surgery during the offseason.

Nick Schmaltz will also return to the lineup after an extended absence. The forward has not played since sustaining an upper-body injury in the Coyotes season opener on Oct. 13, a 6-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Arizona coach Andre Tourigny said Chychrun will be paired with Shayne Gostisbehere, while Schmaltz will play on a line with Clayton Keller and Travis Boyd.

"I don't want to put too much pressure on them," Tourigny said. "We're really happy. They're two really good players and we're looking forward to having them back. But at the same time, you look at [Chychrun], he hasn't played in eight months. So he needs a little bit of time.

"He's a really good player. He's important for us. But we'll take what he will give us. I'm sure it will be plenty, but still at the same time, I don't want to put pressure on him.

"For [Schmaltz], he was with us during training camp. He's been with us on a lot of adjustments, a lot of things we've changed in the system. He's used to it. So [we're] excited that both will be back."

{coyotes} NHL general managers discuss potential rule changes in 'evolving' game

TORONTO -- The NHL general managers met for about five hours in Toronto on Tuesday, mostly going over fine points of rules and setting up in-depth discussions for their meeting in Palm Beach, Florida, from March 13-15.

The NHL hockey operations department showed the GMs videos of nuances in the game now and new moves that might challenge interpretations of rules in the future.

"It's a compelling product, it's evolving, and you have players doing all sorts of things we wouldn't have even thought about 25, 30 years ago," NHL director of officiating Stephen Walkom said. "We had some unique plays that we could show them, like a player picking the puck up on a shootout attempt and carrying it in lacrosse-style and keeping it below his shoulders. When's it legal? When's it illegal? What can he do when he gets to the net?"

One GM suggested adding video review to see if a player shoots the puck over the glass in the defensive zone, which results in a delay of game penalty. NHL senior executive vice president of hockey operations Colin Campbell said the idea comes up from time to time, but it's difficult to get the right camera angle and consistent TV replays.

One GM suggested reducing the penalty for a failed coach's challenge from a two-minute minor for delay of game to a lost timeout, but that could have unintended consequences. The point of the penalty is to make sure coaches challenge only in obvious situations and to reduce the number of challenges.

The GMs continued some common debates, such as the definition of a distinct kicking motion, which determines whether a goal counts when a puck goes into the net off a skate.

"I said, 'This is 'Groundhog Day' times 10,'" Campbell said. "We've been dealing with it for 25 years, how to address a kicked puck. It's OK until it happens in the second round in the fourth game of the Battle of Alberta. There's going to be different opinions. Two million people north of Red Deer agreed with us, and 2 million people south of Red Deer didn't agree with us. So how do we make that decision easier?"

Walkom said the GMs went over tweaks that have had positive effects. They saw a couple of examples in which the officials called a major penalty on a play that resulted in an injury, then rescinded it after reviewing the play with video and a former referee in the situation room in Toronto.

"That was a small change in the rules, but it worked," Walkom said. "It was good for the game. Nobody wants to see a player hurt, and the refs wanted to be sure they didn't miss anything on the play."

The NHL has seen numerous examples of players better understanding the helmet rule, picking up their helmet, putting it back on and returning to the play instead of automatically leaving the ice. Officials are using common sense enforcing the rule if the puck is in the vicinity and a play can be made, and they also have identified when a player has removed another player's helmet deliberately and called a minor penalty for roughing.

"All these little changes that have been made over time have added up to a great game, and we just want to continue to keep it there," Walkom said.

The GMs looked at goalies knocking the net off the moorings.

"We said, 'Is that a trend -- the goalie, when he's under pressure, knocking the net off -- and if so, how do you want us to deal with it? Do you want us to give him a penalty?'" Campbell said. "They might want us to give him a penalty now, until it happens to them."

Walkom said the NHL will monitor the situation the season goes on, and the GMs will look at it more closely in March, when they break up into small groups to discuss subjects, bring their thoughts to the main group and decide whether to recommend rule changes to the competition committee.

"How's [the net] coming off?" Walkom said. "Is it coming off at a higher frequency? Is it the result of how the goalies are playing, or does it have something to do with technology in the pegs? So we're monitoring that for discussion in March."

{coyotes} Goodrow, Fox lead Rangers to 4-1 win over Coyotes

NEW YORK (AP) Barclay Goodrow and Adam Fox scored late in the second period as the New York Rangers beat the Arizona Coyotes 4-1 on Sunday night.

Chris Kreider and Ryan Carpenter also scored and Igor Shesterkin made 31 saves for the Rangers who snapped a three-game home losing streak. The Rangers are 13-1-2 in their last 16 games against the Coyotes, dating back to March 2014.

''We played a good team game, blocked a lot of shots,'' said Shesterkin, who improved to 8-2-2. ''It meant a lot for me.''

Clayton Keller scored for Arizona, which has lost consecutive games after winning the first three on their season-high 14-game road trip. Connor Ingram had 23 saves.

''We came with a lot of urgency, we played well,'' Coyotes coach Andre Tourigny said. ''But we lost momentum on our power play.?

Goodrow broke a scoreless tie when he intercepted a misplayed puck in front of Ingram and deposited his fourth goal of the season with just under five minutes remaining in the middle period.

Fox made it 2-0 just 1:18 later with his fifth goal after the Coyotes had more chances than the Rangers for much of the first two periods. Artemi Panarin had his team-leading 17th assist on the play, giving him 22 points on the season.

''We started off a little slow, got it going and created chances,'' Fox said. ''We got rewarded for it ... We were able to hold them off, got some big saves.''

Kreider extended the lead with a power-play goal at 4:39 of the third for his seventh of the season. Mika Zibanejad and Fox had assists, stretching Fox's point streak to six games and giving Zibanejad a point in eight of his last nine.

Keller spoiled Shesterkin's shutout bid with his sixth of the season on the power play at 8:33 of the third, extending his point streak to five games and giving him a team-leading 17 points.

Carpenter made it 4-1 at 11:43 with his first goal since joining the Rangers in the offseason.

Arizona failed to capitalize on two power-play chances in the first period when they outshot the Rangers 17-4 overall.

''Our goalie kept it scoreless, which was important,'' Rangers coach Gerard Gallant said. ''I thought we gave them too many turnovers and they were first on pucks. Those two PKs were big for us and we got going. We just found a way.''

Both teams were coming off losses the previous night - the Rangers lost 2-1 at Nashville and the Coyotes were beaten 4-2 at New Jersey.

Ingram was sharp in the first half of the game, stopping Ryan Lindgren on a 2-on-1 short-handed break 12 minutes into the first on the Rangers' initial shot on goal after Arizona recorded 10 against Shesterkin. Ingram also denied Zibanejad's one-timer on a Rangers power-play with just under two minutes left in the first.

STATS

The Rangers are 7-0-1 when scoring first this season and improved to 11-0-2 against Arizona at home dating back to 2008-09.

LONG TRIP/ARENA DRAMA

Arizona's road trip is tied for the longest in league history and is occurring while annex construction of Mullett Arena at Arizona State University is completed. The Coyotes relocated to the 5,000-seat college-campus arena while seeking approval for a permanent home in Tempe, Arizona, where the Coyotes have been negotiating to build on a tract of land just west of downtown. Arizona was playing on an annual lease at Gila River Arena until the city of Glendale said it would not renew the lease. The Tempe city council voted unanimously last Thursday to send a proposed arena and entertainment district to referendum in May.

UP NEXT

Coyotes: At Vegas on Thursday night.

Rangers: At Seattle on Thursday night to start a four-game West Coast trip.

{coyotes} Boqvist helps Devils beat Coyotes 4-2 for 9th straight

- Swagbucks is rated #1 Money Making site by MoneySavingExpert
- Over $658,501,950 in rewards have already been paid to Swagbucks members

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) Jesper Boqvist's first goal of the season provided the spark the New Jersey Devils needed to keep their hot streak going.

Boqvist scored the tiebreaking goal midway through the third period and the Devils beat the Arizona Coyotes 4-2 Saturday night for their ninth straight win.

''Timely goal scoring by different guys,'' Devils coach Lindy Ruff said. ''I even think tonight you know Bo getting on the score sheet, that gave us some energy, that got us going. Soon after we scored another one. ... I think it's been a total team effort. A lot of guys have contributed to the fact that we've been able to win that amount of games.''

Tomas Tatar had a goal and an assist, and Jack Hughes and Dougie Hamilton also scored for the Devils, who have their longest streak since winning nine in a row Nov. 17-Dec. 7, 2007. Third-string goalie Akira Schmid had 16 saves in his first start of the season.

''For me, it's just pushing the pace, getting to my spots early and getting set for shots,'' Schmid said. ''It's all about getting to the shots, that's just main key for me.

Dylan Guenther and Clayton Keller scored for Arizona, which had won the first three games of its season-high 14-game road trip. Karel Vejmelka finished with 22 saves.

''Too many turnovers,'' Arizona coach Andre Tourigny said. ''We dig in our tank of energy way too much. When you turn the puck over, you have to work twice as hard to defend.''

Boqvist put the Devils ahead 3-2 with 8:41 left as he converted his own rebound for his first of the season.

Hamilton's power-play goal with 5:45 remaining gave New Jersey a two-goal lead.

Tatar scored 6:29 into the game to put the Devils up 1-0.

Guenther tied it with a power-play goal at 9:04, but Hughes put the Devils back ahead just 23 seconds later with his fifth.

Devils fans started the season yelling, ''Fire Lindy'' chants directed at head coach Lindy Ruff. At the end of the second period with the team in the midst of a long winning streak, they were chanting ''Sorry, Lindy!'' throughout the Prudential Center.

''I accept the apology and maybe one day we can all sit down and have a beer and laugh about it,'' Ruff said with a smile.

Keller beat Nico Hischier and scored a backhand goal 8:19 into the second to tie it 2-2 on another power-play goal.

Schmid got the start two nights after getting his first NHL win in relief in New Jersey's win against Ottawa after Vitek Vanecek collided with a Senators player.

ROAD TRIPPING

The Coyotes' road trip is tied for the longest in NHL history and necessitated while annex construction of Mullett Arena at Arizona State University is completed. The team relocated to a 5,000-seat arena on the college campus while the franchise is seeking approval for a permanent home in Tempe, Arizona.

NOTES

The Devils' franchise record is 13 straight wins set Feb. 26-March 23, 2001. ... New Jersey is 11-0-0 this season when Hischier records a point. He had an assist in this game.
