{coyotes} MacKinnon gets assist to extend point streak to 18 games, Avs cruise to 4-1 win over Coyotes

DENVER (AP) Nathan MacKinnon extended his point streak to 18 games with an assist, Alexandar Georgiev stopped 24 shots and the Colorado Avalanche cruised to a 4-1 victory over the Arizona Coyotes on Saturday night.

Bowen Byram opened the scoring in the first period before Colorado pulled away in the second behind goals from Valeri Nichushkin, Josh Manson and Fredrik Olofsson.

"The second period is a template of how we should and want to play," said Avalanche coach Jared Bednar, whose team has won three of four heading into the NHL's holiday break. "Might have been our most complete period of the year."

MacKinnon's 18-game point streak is the second-longest for Colorado since the franchise relocated from Quebec to Denver in 1995-96. He trails only Paul Stastny, who compiled a 20-game run in 2006-07.

It was also MacKinnon's 25th point in December. He's three away from matching the franchise record for a single month set by Peter Stastny in February 1981. Colorado still has three games left this month.

Alex Kerfoot scored on a power play with 3:04 remaining to spoil Georgiev's shutout bid. Connor Ingram made 22 saves for the Coyotes, whose four-game winning streak was halted.

"They are the measuring-stick team in our division," said Kerfoot, who played two seasons with Colorado. "If we want to be a team who competes for playoff spots, these are the types of teams that we need to bring our best efforts against."

Colorado turned up the intensity in the second period and ran away with the game. MacKinnon got the offense going by sending a backhand, cross-ice pass to Nichushkin, who knocked it in for his 16th goal of the season.

With his assist, MacKinnon has at least one point in all 18 home games this season. It's the longest season-opening home point streak in Quebec/Colorado history. Wayne Gretzky has the longest home point streak to start a season in NHL history with 40 straight games for the Los Angeles Kings in 1988-89.

"He does it all, right?" Bednar said of MacKinnon. "He's executing at a high rate."

Byram gave Colorado a 1-0 lead midway through the first period with his first goal since Dec. 2. Colorado's defensemen have a league-leading 27 goals this season.

"It was a lot of fun tonight to play like that," Byram said.

Coyotes defenseman J.J. Moser took a hard hit from Miles Wood in the second period and didn't return due to an upper-body injury. Arizona coach André Tourigny had no update after the game.

"I think there were a few incidents without the puck, which I didn't like," Tourigny said of the physical play, which included a fight between Wood and Lawson Crouse. "But at the end of the day, I don't think they're predators on the other side. I think they play hard. They're a hard-working team. I have a ton of respect for them.

"For us, if we didn't like it, we just have to push back out there. It's not after the game making comments about it. If you don't like it, you need to do it during the game."

The Avalanche have two players who recently returned to practice.

Forward Artturi Lehkonen, sidelined with a neck injury since early November, has started skating in a red non-contact jersey. Defenseman Samuel Girard was cleared Friday to resume practice after receiving care from the player assistance program. Girard last month cited anxiety and depression leading to alcohol abuse as the reason for entering the program.

{coyotes} Clayton Keller scores in 3rd consecutive game as Coyotes beat Sharks 5-2

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) Clayton Keller scored his third goal in three games and the Arizona Coyotes beat the San Jose Sharks 5-2 on Thursday night to extend their win streak to four.

Keller, who leads the Coyotes in points, got his 12th goal of the season in the second period as part of a three-point night. He took a lead pass from Alex Kerfoot in the attacking zone and broke in alone on Sharks goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood, beating him through the legs with a backhand.

Keller and Kerfoot both had a goal and two assists, and Michael Kesselring and Lawson Crouse also scored for Arizona. Karel Vejmelka made 29 saves in the win.

Anthony Duclair and Filip Zadina scored for the Sharks, who have lost four straight and entered the day tied with Chicago for the fewest points in the NHL.

The Coyotes, in the thick of the playoff picture, are on a hot streak after dropping four straight earlier this month. It was Arizona's second win over San Jose in a week, with the Coyotes blanking the Sharks 1-0 last Friday at home.

After a scoreless first period, Arizona took control in the second with three goals. Kesselring put the Coyotes ahead at 4:58, chipping a pass from Keller over Blackwood's glove.

Duclair responded for the Sharks with a breakaway goal. Off a deflection by Fabian Zetterlund, Duclair took the puck from his own end, sped past two flat-footed defenders and went the distance for a tying goal before Keller gave Arizona the lead back two minutes later.

Kerfoot added a goal at 12:56 of the second, putting the puck in with his skate after a centering feed by Nick Schmaltz. Video review determined Kerfoot did not kick the puck in.

Zadina's early third-period goal cut the lead in the half, but Keller and Kerfoot combined with Schmaltz on a tic-tac-toe power-play goal to give Arizona the insurance goal back.

Arizona's Sean Durzi returned to the lineup on defense after missing the last five games with a lower-body injury. He recorded an assist on Keller's goal.

{coyotes} Coyotes rally past Senators 4-3 to spoil Jacques Martin's return as Ottawa coach

--

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) Michael Kesselring scored with 3:33 remaining to cap a four-goal comeback in the Arizona Coyotes' 4-3 victory over Ottawa on Tuesday night, spoiling the return of Senators interim coach Jacques Martin.

Jack McBain, J.J. Moser and Clayton Keller also scored for the Coyotes, who trailed 3-0 after the first period. Moser and Keller scored 33 seconds apart in the third to tie it 3-all at 9:47, and Kesselring's goal gave Arizona its third straight victory.

"We kept coming and kept coming and we found a way," coach Andre Tourigny said. "When Bainer broke the ice, we all had the feeling, OK, it's not over. Don't know if we will make it, but we're still in it. And we were."

Angus Crookshank, Josh Norris and Dominik Kubalik scored for the Senators in their first game since coach D.J. Smith was fired Monday. Martin was 342-255-96 in his first stint as Ottawa coach from 1996 to 2004.

"I thought for two periods, we played pretty good," said Martin, who began his NHL coaching career 37 years ago with St. Louis. "I think when they got the second goal, we needed to make some adjustments technically. Not to spend as much time in our zone.

"I felt comfortable. I think it's going to be a process. We have different areas that we need to be better and solve. It's not going to happen all in one day. But I think what I want to see is a progression as we move along."

Hall of Fame forward Daniel Alfredsson, a longtime Ottawa star, made his debut as an assistant coach for the Senators, who have lost five in a row.

Arizona goaltender Karel Vejmelka stopped all 16 shots he faced after replacing Connor Ingram following Kubalik's goal late in the first period. Ingram stopped three of six shots.

The Coyotes dominated the third period, outshooting Ottawa 13-5. They finished with a 39-21 shots advantage.

Kesselring's winning goal ricocheted in after hitting Ottawa defenseman Travis Hamonic's skate.

"Unlucky bounce there," Senators forward Tim Stützle said. "No excuses. We gave up too many chances tonight, and they are a very good team."

Joonas Korpisalo made 34 saves for the Senators in the fourth game of a five-game trip that ends Thursday in Colorado.

The Coyotes improved to 11-5 at 4,400-seat Mullett Arena, their best home start since 2009-10 when they also began 11-5 and won 16 of their first 21 at home.

Crookshank, Norris and Kubalik scored in the first period, the first goals the Coyotes had given up on their three-game homestand.

"We knew they would come out with energy," Tourigny said. "We saw it from the first faceoff. They were pushing hard."

Crookshank opened the scoring four minutes in when he tipped in Artem Zub's shot from right blue line through traffic. Crookshank was recalled Sunday after compiling 10 goals and 11 assists for Belleville of the American Hockey League.

"It was a pretty special moment," Crookshank said. "I am still trying to find a way to digest it. It was cool. I saw my parents jump up right away, which is something I will never forget."

Norris scored eight seconds into a power play on a slap shot from the right circle to make it 2-0 at 13:06, and Kubalik scored on a nifty backhand redirection of a pass from Erik Brannstrom just 73 seconds later.

The Coyotes posted shutouts in the first two games of the homestand. Crookshank's goal was the first by an opponent at even strength in 139:47.

McBain beat Korpisalo at 14:10 of the second, 10 seconds after a Senators penalty expired, when he put a rebound of Logan Cooley's shot into an open side to make it 3-1. Moser scored after Matias Maccelli took the puck from Norris along the side boards.

Senators forward Vladimir Tarasenko played in his 700th game after missing the previous two to attend to a family matter. Mathieu Joseph missed his second straight game with a lower-body injury.

banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

The NHL's annual Holiday Roster Freeze is set to take effect Tuesday night at 11:59p.m. local in each market and run through 12:01 a.m. local on Dec. 28.

The freeze will halt all trades, loans and waiver activity. Players placed on waivers Tuesday and subsequently claimed Wednesday will immediately report to their new team. Transactions made to come into compliance regarding a player being removed from long-term injured reserve will also be allowed during the freeze.

Any player on emergency recall may be loaned back to the AHL during the roster freeze period and any player who was recalled after Dec. 11 may be loaned up until 11:59 p.m. local time on Dec. 23, as long as waivers are not required.

The NHL schedule runs through Dec. 23, when 28 teams will be in action, before pausing until Dec. 27.
