ATLANTA — Five professional sports leagues and their players associations have aligned forces to ask for protections for players and staff who face threats and harassment from sports bettors.

The Associated Press obtained a copy of the letter sent Tuesday to gambling regulators in 35 states and the District of Columbia. In the letter, the NFL, Major League Baseball, NBA, Major League Soccer and the NHL and the leagues' players associations asked that rules be established to permanently revoke betting privileges for anyone found to have threatened or “abusively harassed” any professional or amateur athlete, coach, official or team personnel."

The letter to state gambling regulators cited “the escalating threat facing professional players, coaches, and officials, the continued harassment and violent threats from sports bettors.”

“While the expansion of legal, state-regulated sports betting has brought new ways for fans to engage with their favourite sports, it has also introduced some negative consequences for players and other personnel involved with professional sporting events,” the leagues and players associations wrote. "Too often, individuals who lose sports bets direct threatening and harassing messages toward players coaches and their families via social media and in-person interactions.

“Threatening the safety of an athlete or their family members over a sports bet crosses a bright ethical and criminal line and it is entirely unacceptable. It is critical that state and local leaders safeguard the participants of sports at all levels.”

The letter noted that Ohio, West Virginia, Louisiana and Wyoming already exclude “bad actors” from licensed sportsbooks and mobile applications. The letter asks for broader protections from the other 35 states and District of Columbia, which do not have similar laws or protections in place since the Supreme Court paved the way for gambling legalization in 2018.

“We call on all state gaming commissions and state policymakers to promptly adopt uniform rules and legislative guardrails to help address this behaviour,” the leagues and players associations wrote, asking state-regulated sportsbooks and mobile betting operators “to permanently revoke wagering privileges for any individual verified to have abusively harassed or issued threats of violence against any professional or amateur athlete, coach, official, team personnel or their respective families.”

Goaltender Connor Ingram announced his retirement on Instagram on Friday.

Ingram, 29, was acquired by the Edmonton Oilers prior to last season from the Utah Mammoth and went 16-10-3 with an .899 save percentage and 2.60 goals-against average.

He went on to go 2-3 in the playoffs with an .876 save percentage and 3.86 GAA before the Oilers were eliminated in the first round.

The 6-foot-1 netminder came off a three-year, $5.85 million contract that carried a cap hit of $1.15 million.

Drafted 88th overall by the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2016, Ingram has a career 55-54-18 record with a .901 save percentage and 3.01 GAA split between the Nashville Predators, Arizona Coyotes, Mammoth, and Oilers.

{coyotes} Hurricanes, Sabres and Mammoth among suitors for Hellebuyck; Panthers out of running

Lucky Strike AMF

As the Winnipeg Jets continue to explore options to honour star goaltender Connor Hellebuyck’s trade request, TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun lists the Carolina Hurricanes, Buffalo Sabres and Utah Mammoth as possible landing spots.

LeBrun wrote in The Athletic Tuesday that the Florida Panthers were interested in making a move for Hellebuyck in June but no longer have the assets to do so after adding Brady Tkachuk in a massive deal with the Ottawa Senators that same month and later adding goaltender Jacob Markstrom on the trade market.

LeBrun writes that any deal with the Hurricanes would likely include restricted free agent Alexander Nikishin, who remains unsigned and reportedly on the trade block as he seeks a significant raise from the $925,000 cap hit he carried last season. The 24-year-old defenceman posted 11 goals and 33 points in 81 games last season before adding one assist in 17 playoff games.

The defending Stanley Cup champions are currently set to enter the season with Pyotr Kochetkov and Brandon Bussi in net after seeing Frederik Andersen join the Edmonton Oilers in free agency this summer. Carolina has the cap space for Hellebuyck with over $9 million still available, per PuckPedia.

The Sabres and Jets discussed a trade that would have sent Hellebuyck to Buffalo ahead of the first round of the draft in June, but were unable to reach a deal.

While there is obviously interest in the three-time Vezina Trophy winner, it appears no trade is close at the moment.

“The bottom line at the moment, as far as I can ascertain, is that there’s just nothing on the table that would represent a fair deal for Winnipeg,” LeBrun wrote in The Athletic. “It’s a real tough spot for the Jets to be in, especially after the star Team USA goalie made his trade request public. But the Jets can’t give him away.”

The 6-foot-4 netminder is entering the third season of a seven-year, $59.5 million contract that carries an annual cap hit of $8.5 million. He holds a full no-move clause as part of the contract through next July, when it will switch to a 10-team approved trade list.

Hellebuyck, 33, went 23-23-11 last season with a 2.86 goals-against average and an .895 save percentage. Winnipeg took a step backward, going from Presidents’ Trophy winners to missing the playoffs.

He was crucial in leading the United States to their first Olympic gold medal in men’s hockey since 1980, going 5-0 with a 1.18 GAA and .956 save percentage. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom following his 41-save performance in the gold-medal overtime win against Canada.

Hellebuyck put the pressure on Winnipeg last month as he informed the world he first requested a trade earlier this summer.

“I have tried to handle the situation quietly and respectfully while giving the organization time to explore its options,” Hellebuyck said as part of a statement released by his agent. “With training camp approaching, I felt it was important to publicly confirm my request. My position has not changed, and I believe moving on is the best path forward for me and my family.

“I appreciate everything Winnipeg Jets fans have meant to me throughout my career and hope a resolution can be reached soon.”

Hellebuyck is just a year removed from being the runaway winner of the Hart Trophy and Vezina Trophy in 2024-25, putting up a 47-12-3 record with a 2.00 GAA and .925 save percentage.

{coyotes} NHL Draft decentralized once again in 2027

Simply Wholesale

For a third straight year, the NHL Draft will be decentralized next summer.

The league confirmed on Monday that the 2027 edition will follow the same format of the previous two.

The 2027 NHL Draft is set for June 25 and 26.

A decentralized draft means that all 32 teams and their staffs will remain in their home cities and convene there while top prospects, along with league officials, will meet elsewhere as first-round selections are made, allowing for players to still receive jerseys and draft caps. The 2025 draft was held at Long Island’s UBS Area, while Buffalo’s KeyBank Center played host to this past summer’s draft.

“Some people like it; some people don’t,” Los Angeles Kings president Luc Robitaille said ahead of the 2025 draft. “I put a lot of value on what scouts do in the season and the traveling and so forth, so the less distraction you have when you’re in the room when it’s time to make a decision that can impact a franchise for 10-plus years, I think it’s very important. Is the show itself, being on the floor and talking to everyone fun? Yes. But at the end of the day, that draft every year could make or break a franchise.”

The decentralized draft was born from the COVID-era virtual drafts of 2020 and 2021 that were done so out of necessity.

{coyotes} Newest Mammoth Trocheck enjoying move to Utah: ‘It’s been great so far’

In an NHL off-season filled with big moves, forward Vincent Trocheck made one of the biggest in terms of lifestyle, trading in skyscrapers in downtown Manhattan for the mountains of Utah.

Looking for veteran presence to add to their young core, the Utah Mammoth added the 33-year-old Trocheck via trade from the New York Rangers on July 1 in exchange for defenceman Sean Durzi, forward Cole Beaudoin and a 2027 third-round pick.

The Mammoth made the playoffs last season for the first time since the franchise moved from Arizona to Utah before losing in the first round to the Vegas Golden Knights.

Trocheck said Tuesday in a radio interview on OverDrive that he and his family have been in Salt Lake City for about three weeks with his kids already in school for the year.

“It’s been great so far,” said Trocheck of the move. “It’s so beautiful out here, being able to wake up and see the mountains every day has been awesome.”

Trocheck missed 14 games early in the 2025-26 season with a severe lung infection but still managed 16 goals with 53 points in 67 games with the Rangers.

“Another ultimate teammate,” Mammoth general manager Bill Armstrong said of adding Trocheck on July 2. “A guy that’s a glue guy. He’ll do anything for his teammates. He’s good off the draw, he’s a right-handed draw. He can get in the bumper and score some goals.

“He really can just fit around people and do whatever needs to be done at the time. He did that with Team USA to win a gold medal, but he’s done that for a lot of his career.”

The Mammoth open the 2026-27 season at home against the Chicago Blackhawks on Oct. 1 as the NHL shifts to having 84 regular-season games on the calendar for the first time since the 1993-94 campaign.

Trocheck, who is playing for a West Coast team for the first time in his career, says he’s in favour of the NHL adding more regular-season games and cutting down the pre-season slate.

“I think everybody wants to get going,” said Trocheck. “These are kind of the dog days of summer where you have these couple weeks left, you’re back in your city but kind of just going through captain’s practices or whatever it is before camp starts.

“I think having a quicker, shorter camp and quicker pre-season is favourable for everyone.”

While the Rangers struggled last season, missing the playoffs for a second straight year, Trocheck still experienced one of the ultimate career highs by helping the Americans capture Olympic gold in men’s hockey for the first time since 1980 in February.

“It’s so wild,” said Trocheck of the experience. “It was so much fun and so memorable and one of the coolest, if not the coolest, experience of my life.”

{coyotes} Top prospects for Utah Mammoth

HerbsPro The Ayurveda Experience

TASCHEN

1. Tij Iginla, F

How acquired: Selected with No. 6 pick in 2024 NHL Draft

2025-26 season: Kelowna (WHL): 48 GP, 41-49-90

Iginla (6-foot, 182 pounds), the son of Hockey Hall of Fame forward Jarome Iginla, is coming off his first full season without an injury. He returned last season from double hip surgery that ended his 2024-25 season after 21 games.

"It was great to be back for a full season and healthy," Iginla said. "You never want to go through that stuff, but hopefully, I have most of it behind me."

Knowing he could debut for Utah this season, the 20-year-old said he's adopted tendencies from forward Gavin McKenna, who was taken No. 1 by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2026 NHL Draft, while skating together this offseason.

"It's just picking up something small," Iginla said. "Like a change of direction or something specific a player does like that. More of those little things, more of those skills and movements that I'm trying to build into my game."

Projected NHL arrival: This season

2. Caleb Desnoyers, F

How acquired: Selected with No. 4 pick in 2025 NHL Draft

2025-26 season: Moncton (QMJHL): 45 GP, 22-56-78

Desnoyers (6-2, 178) sustained an apparent left leg injury while playing for Team Canada at the World Junior Summer Showcase on Aug. 1, leaving his chance to make the Mammoth roster during training camp in doubt. His health also was a concern entering last season, missing the start of it after having wrist surgery in mid-August 2025.

When healthy, the 19-year-old leans on his physicality without sacrificing skill. He's averaged more than a point per game for Moncton of the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League the past two seasons, with 162 points (57 goals, 105 assists) in 101 games, and he had six assists in seven games at the 2026 IIHF World Junior Championship.

"My mentality is I'll always aim for the highest thing," Desnoyers said June 28. "The highest level I can play this year is the NHL, so I'll focus and do everything I can this summer to achieve that. If not, we'll see after that."

Projected NHL arrival: This season

3. Sebastian Cossa, G

How acquired: Traded from the Detroit Red Wings on June 26 for the No. 23 pick in 2026 NHL Draft

2025-26 season: Grand Rapids (AHL): 39 GP, 26-8-4, 2.33 GAA, .915 SVP

Cossa (6-6, 221) signed a two-year, $4 million contract with Utah on June 30, four days after being traded from Detroit.

The 23-year-old has played one NHL game, making 10 saves on 12 shots in relief of Ville Husso for the Red Wings in a 6-5 shootout win against the Buffalo Sabres on Dec. 9, 2024. He'll get a more substantial look with the Mammoth this season, likely starting as the backup to Karel Vejmelka.

Projected NHL arrival: This season

4. Ethan Belchetz, F

How acquired: Selected with No. 17 pick in 2026 NHL Draft

2025-26 season: Windsor (OHL): 57 GP, 34-25-59

The Mammoth didn't think they had a chance to draft Belchetz (6-5, 228), general manager Bill Armstrong said. When he started to fall, Utah couldn't resist trading its picks at No. 19 and 83 to move up two spots for the towering power forward.

"We were so excited at where he was laying in the draft that we had to move forward to go get him," Armstrong said. "He was a prime target. When we saw him in that range, we were like, 'Hey, we're not going by. We're going to do everything in our power to go out there, move forward and get him.'"

The 18-year-old is exactly what the Mammoth are looking for. He's someone that plays with an edge and lives around the net.

Projected NHL arrival: Next season

5. Dmitri Simashev, D

How acquired: Selected with No. 6 pick in 2023 NHL Draft

2025-26 season: Utah (NHL): 28 GP, 0-1-1; Tucson (AHL): 40 GP, 8-27-35

Simashev (6-4, 198) quickly adapted to hockey in North America last season after previously playing in Russia. His 35 points in the AHL were up from six points (one goal, five assists) in 56 games for Lokomotiv Yaroslavl of the Kontinental Hockey League in 2024-25.

The 21-year-old is in line for a full season with Utah after the departures of defensemen Sean Durzi, who was traded to the New York Rangers, and Ian Cole, who signed a one-year contract with the Chicago Blackhawks, on July 1.

Projected NHL arrival: This season
