{coyotes} Shane Doan to conduct Phoenix Symphony

Arizona Coyotes forward Shane Doan will try his hand at conducting when he leads the Phoenix Symphony's performance of "The Star-Spangled Banner" on its opening night on Friday.

"The people with the Phoenix Symphony are very nice people and they reached out to me to do this," Doan told the Coyotes website. "At first I thought maybe they'd dialed the wrong number because I have absolutely zero, and I mean ZERO, musical skills. I can't carry a note whatsoever, I can't keep tempo and I'm tone deaf. I can't even whistle or hum. But I'm very honored and excited to do this. Hopefully it will be something that's fun for everyone involved."

Doan, who will turn 40 on Oct. 10, will serve as maestro to the more than 70 members of the symphony when they begin their 2016-17 season.

"They are very talented and disciplined people, and to watch them and to hear them is just amazing to me," Doan said. "That music is so emotional and moving when it's done the way they do it, you can't help but feel it. Every time I've gone it's been so enjoyable. I'm very excited about getting the opportunity to be a small part of it this time."

The Coyotes captain is having an eventful offseason. In addition to signing a one-year contract in July to return for his 21st season with the organization, Doan threw out the first pitch at the Arizona Diamondbacks game Friday.
