{coyotes} Ducks dominate third period, beat Coyotes, 5-2

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) The Ducks had something of a rally cry to start their season: Just wait until we get healthy.

Slowly, the injured have returned. And now with Ryan Kesler back after missing 37 games following hip surgery and Corey Perry expected back soon, Anaheim is approaching full strength for the first time this season.

It appears to be showing dividends after the Ducks dominated the third period Sunday to down the Arizona Coyotes 5-2 for their fourth victory in five games.

''We're just trying to get some guys in shape and healthy,'' said Anaheim forward Antoine Vermette, who had a goal and two assists. ''It takes time. We believe we still have much better to offer.''

The Ducks got two goals from Rickard Rakell in the first period, then third-period scores from Cam Fowler and Jakob Silfverberg, before Vermette added a final empty-net goal.

The NHL-worst Coyotes rallied back twice on power plays against Rakell's scores to tie it.

Brendan Perlini's slap shot tied it at 1, and 19-year-old rookie Clayton Keller's 14th goal tied it at 2 early in the third. Then came the flood of three Anaheim scores.

''I thought we played a good game until then,'' Keller said. ''I think we just kind of got away from it.''

Not an unfamiliar theme for the Coyotes, who have won only nine games and lost 10 of their last 12.

''We played a good game,'' Arizona coach Rick Tocchet said. ''I'm happy with their effort. We had a couple of breakdowns and crucial mistakes at the wrong time, and it was in our net. That seems to be the story of our team.''

Anaheim's early story was its roster. It started the season missing six players expected to dress, and later lost Perry.

Now they will start a five-game trip coming off consecutive wins at home, and Perry close to returning.

''We're kind of a work in progress,'' Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said. ''We haven't had an opportunity to have everybody together. We think this (trip) is an opportunity for our team to bond together.''

Vermette went his last eight games without a point, but Carlyle inserted him into the first line with forwards Ryan Getzlaf and Rakell and it worked to near perfection.

''It's a lot of fun,'' Vermette said. ''They're great players and make a lot of room. They're patient and find ways to get the puck, slow things down and make plays. I thought we fed off each other pretty well.''

Rakell extended his career-high goal streak to five games.

''We're scoring goals all right, but it feels like we can get even more,'' Rakell said.

NOTES: Vermette collected his first three-point game since March 12, 2016. . Keller leads the Coyotes in scoring and has a career-high eight-game point streak going. ... Kesler appeared in his 900th career game. He had two assists for his 47th career multi-assist game. ... Anaheim's Patrick Eaves, out for the season with Guillain-Barre syndrome, was in attendance for the first time this season. Said Carlyle: ''He's definitely part of our group and we haven't forgotten about him. We're going to let him and his family take their time.'' ... Perlini tried to find encouragement in Arizona's latest defeat: ''We fought back and got back in the game. It was a good effort by the guys anyway, and the score line doesn't really justify how we played.''

{coyotes} Auston Matthews scores for Maple Leafs in Arizona homecoming

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) Auston Matthews enjoyed his mother's cooking - and feasted on the lowly Arizona Coyotes.

Matthews scored in Toronto's three-goal first period in his Arizona homecoming to help the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Coyotes 7-4 on Thursday night.

Facing the Coyotes in Arizona for the second time in his career, the 20-year-old Matthews scored in his second straight game after missing six because of concussion-like symptoms.

''That was a great feeling,'' Matthews said.

With Toronto off since beating the Rangers on Saturday night in New York, Matthews spent the Christmas break with his family at home in Scottsdale. He enjoyed mother Ema's home meals and played golf with father Brian and younger sister Breyana, an accomplished junior golfer.

The family was out in full force at Gila River Arena in the Maple Leafs' only Arizona visit of the season. Thousands of fans wore Toronto jerseys, with Matthews' No. 34 the most popular.

Patrick Marleau scored twice for Toronto. Zach Hyman, Mitch Marner, William Nylander and Connor Brown added goals, and Frederik Andersen made 30 saves.

''Seemed like everybody contributed tonight,'' Matthews said. ''That's the kind of team we are.''

Josh Archibald, Brendan Perlini, Jordan Martinook and Christian Fischer scored for the NHL-worst Coyotes. Arizona was coming off a 3-1 victory in Colorado on Wednesday night.

Toronto scored three goals in a 2 1/2-minute span midway through the first period, and added three more in a 6:08 stretch in the second to put it away.

''It was frustrating,'' Archibald said. ''They're a speed team and unfortunately we couldn't slow down that speed through the neutral zone and into the offensive zone.''

Hyman opened the scoring on a short-handed breakaway at 8:55 of the first. Arizona's Derek Stepan lost control at the blue line, and Hyman sped away and beat Scott Wedgewood with a wrist shot.

Matthews added his 15th of the season 2:03 later with a wrist shot from the slot. Twenty-seven seconds later, Marner fired another wrist shot - this one while falling - past Wedgewood.

''We got behind their defense and moved the puck well,'' Marner said. ''We created havoc down low.''

Arizona scored twice in a 1:17 span late in the period. Archibald scored off a bouncing rebound for his first goal of the season, and Perlini connected from close range.

''I think we just took our foot off the gas,'' Matthews said.

The Maple Leafs revved up the offense again midway through the second.

Marleau started the spree with a power-play deflection , Nylander beat Wedgewood on a breakaway after Oliver Ekman-Larsson's turnover, and Marleau capped the flurry from close range. The 38-year-old Marleau has 14 goals in his first season with Toronto.

''I felt great, which is weird in a six-goal game,'' Wedgewood said.

Martinook scored for Arizona late in the second, and Fischer had a power-play goal in the third. Brown finished the scoring with an empty-net goal.

HONORING BOWER

The Maple Leafs honored the late Johnny Bower by wearing ''JB'' jersey patches and helmet stickers. The Hall of Fame goalie died Tuesday at age 93. He helped Toronto win four Stanley Cup titles, the last in 1967 at age 43. The Coyotes had a moment of silence for Bower before the game.

NOTES: Matthews has 55 goals and 43 assists in 110 career regular-season games. He was born in San Ramon, California. ... Matthews and Fischer were teammates for two seasons in the U.S. national team development program. ... Toronto scored at least seven goals for the NHL-leading fourth time this season. ... Arizona recalled F Mario Kempe from Tucson of the American Hockey League.

{coyotes} Goligoski, Raanta push Coyotes past Avalanche 3-1

DENVER (AP) The Arizona Coyotes withstood a late push and held off the Colorado Avalanche.

The NHL's worst team sure appreciated the change of fortune - if even for just one night.

Alex Goligoski scored the go-ahead goal midway through the second period, and Arizona survived a flurry of near-misses by the Avalanche to come away with a 3-1 victory.

Of the close calls in the third by Colorado, Matt Nieto hit the crossbar 2:05 into the period. Nathan MacKinnon was denied on a breakaway chance at the 5:10 mark. And Nikita Zadorov hit the crossbar with 7:05 remaining.

''Game of inches,'' Arizona coach Rick Tocchet said. ''It can go either way a lot of nights. It's nice to be on our end sometimes than the other end, so it was a hard-fought win for us.''

Tobias Rieder scored 54 seconds into the game and Antti Raanta stopped 25 shots for the Coyotes, who won for only the second time in 10 games. Lawson Crouse added his first goal of the season with 4:25 remaining.

Arizona fell to Colorado 6-2 on Saturday prior to the NHL's three-day break.

''It's been an up-and-down first half (of the season) and we're trending in the right direction,'' Raanta said. ''Hopefully we can keep it going.''

Goligoski put the Coyotes ahead for good 10:34 into the second with his fourth goal of the season. Off a Colorado turnover, Clayton Keller pushed up the ice and fed Goligoski, who beat Colorado goalie Semyon Varlamov from the circle.

Varlamov stopped 24 shots as the Avalanche failed to record at least a point for just the third time in nine games. Mikko Rantanen added his 11th goal of the season.

Colorado was outshot 20-13 through two periods but came out firing in the third.

''The end of the second and third period we had a lot of chances,'' Rantanen said. ''We should have scored at least a couple goals there and their goalie played pretty well. Everyone knows it's one we should have had.''

The Avalanche fell to 10-7-1 at home this season.

Arizona won despite going 0 for 4 on the power play and failing to score on a 5-on-3 chance that lasted 1:53. Colorado's penalty kill has not allowed a goal in its last 28 chances.

''(The PK) was great again, did a real nice job keeping them to the outside, good sticks, when we needed to block shots, we did,'' Colorado coach Jared Bednar said. ''If the rest of our game played with the same urgency as our PK does, we'd be a lot more successful.''

Earlier, Rieder scored his sixth goal of the season to put Arizona up 1-0 in the first minute. Varlamov lost track of the puck behind the net as Brendan Perlini sent a pass in front to Rieder, who scored glove-side with Varlamov facing the opposite direction.

Colorado tied things at 1-1 3:56 into the first on Rantanen's one-timer.

NOTES:

Arizona C Zac Rinaldo has been suspended six games for punching Colorado's Samuel Girard. Rinaldo was expected to take part in a phone hearing Wednesday with the NHL after waiving his right to have an in-person hearing. The league's player safety department announced his suspension with a tweet about an hour before Wednesday's game. . Avalanche D Tyson Barrie is expected to undergo surgery on Thursday for a broken bone in his right hand and will be out four to six weeks. Barrie left Saturday's game early in the first period after he blocked a shot with his hand.

{coyotes} Boeser, Barzal leading NHL rookies out of holiday break

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- The Arizona Coyotes expected Clayton Keller to be a key contributor as a rookie this season.

Few could have seen how big of an impact the 19-year-old forward would have out of the gate.

Crafty with the puck and blessed with good vision, Keller had a goal in his first game of 2017-18 and was the NHL's leading rookie scorer the first month of the season with nine goals and 15 assists.

The No. 7 overall pick in the 2016 draft hit a dry spell in December, going 17 games without a goal, but continued to create when he wasn't scoring. He had the game-winning goal in overtime against Washington last week and leads the Coyotes with 13 goals and 16 assists.

Here's a look at some of the other top rookies in the NHL this season:

---

BROCK BOESER, VANCOUVER CANUCKS

The 23rd overall pick of the 2015 draft opened some eyes last season, notching four goals and an assist in nine games. He's kept that pace going this season, leading all rookies with 20 goals, and he had a hat trick during a four-point game against Pittsburgh on Nov. 4.

Boeser became the fastest Vancouver rookie to reach 20 goals, doing it in 34 games, and he's one of the favorites to win the Calder Trophy, awarded to the league's top rookie.

---

MATHEW BARZAL, NEW YORK ISLANDERS

Barzal had an uneventful stint in the NHL last season, failing to register a point in two games with the Islanders.

This season, the playmaking 20-year-old has been racking up the points as a second-line center.

Prior to Wednesday's games, Barzal was the NHL's leading rookie scorer with 35 points and was third in goals with 12, including a hat trick against Winnipeg last Friday. He has quickly become the cornerstone of the future for the Islanders.

---

CHARLIE MCAVOY, BOSTON BRUINS

Skating next to Zdeno Chara, McAvoy doesn't look all that big. Then again, almost no one does next to Boston's 6-foot-9 defenseman.

But McAvoy is sturdily built at 6 feet, 208 pounds and so is his game.

The 14th overall pick of the 2016 draft, McAvoy has a solid all-around game and has been heavily leaned on by coach Bruce Cassidy, logging an NHL rookie-high 23:13 of ice time per game. The 19-year-old has played steady defense and chipped in five goals with 14 assists.

---

NICO HISCHIER, NEW JERSEY DEVILS

The No. 1 overall pick earlier this year played well enough to earn a roster spot coming out of training camp.

Hischier, who turns 19 on Jan. 4, has centered New Jersey's top line and is tied with Keller for third among rookies in assists with 16.

Hischier recently had a six-game pointless streak and hasn't had a goal since Nov. 27 (five total), but the Devils like his creativity and decision-making at such a young age.

---

MALCOLM SUBBAN, VEGAS GOLDEN KNIGHTS

Vegas' decision to take Pittsburgh goalie Marc-Andre Fleury in the expansion draft was seen as a big step toward helping the Golden Knights have some success in their first year as a franchise.

Vegas has exceeded expectations, becoming arguably the NHL's biggest surprise by leading the Pacific Division, but first-year goalie Subban has been the key cog. The 24-year-old from Toronto has become a fan favorite along the Strip and won eight of his 10 starts to lead all rookies despite missing a month with a lower-body injury.

---

ALEX DEBRINCAT, CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS

At 5-7, 165 pounds, the Blackhawks' 20-year-old winger is not going to overpower anyone. He can weave his way through and race past defenders, as he's shown so far this season.

A second-round pick in 2016, DeBrincat is tied for third among rookies with 12 goals and is fifth with 23 points. He's also spent time on Chicago's top line with Jonathan Towes and Brandon Saad, and had a hat trick against Anaheim on Nov. 27.

{coyotes} Rinaldo to have phone hearing for unsuspecting punch Wednesday

Arizona Coyotes forward Zac Rinaldo has waived his right to an in-person hearing with the NHL Department of Player Safety for a punch to unsuspecting opponent, Colorado Avalanche defenseman Samuel Girard, during a game at Gila River Arena on Saturday.

A telephone hearing will be conducted Wednesday.

At 8:52 of the second period, Rinaldo punched Girard and was assessed a match penalty. He also was penalized at the same time for a fight with Avalanche defenseman Erik Johnson.

The following grounds are being considered for supplemental discipline: punch to an unsuspecting opponent. However, the Department of Player Safety retains the right to make adjustments to the infraction upon review.

The Avalanche won the game 6-2.

{coyotes} Carl Soderberg scores twice, Avs rout Coyotes 6-2

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) Their top scorer out after a brawl and game misconduct, the Colorado Avalanche responded with a flurry of second-period goals Saturday night.

Carl Soderberg scored twice, the first to start a four-goal burst in the second, and the Avalanche routed the Coyotes 6-2.

After Soderberg opened the scoring at 10:20 of the second, J.T. Compher, Nail Yakupov and Matt Nieto added goals in less than four minutes. Sven Andrighetto had a power-play goal in the third, and Soderberg completed the scoring.

''That's a really good sign for your team when they're standing up for one another like that,'' Colorado coach Jared Bednar said. ''The other guys stepped up to get the job done on the power play.''

Semyon Varlamov stopped 31 shots for the Avalanche, allowing only Derek Stepan's two short-handed goals. Stepan became the third player in franchise history with two such goals in a game, joining Tobias Rieder and Keith Tkachuk.

The Avalanche have earned at least a point in six of eight games. The Coyotes have lost eight of nine games after ending a seven-game losing streak Friday night with a victory over Washington.

In the second period, Coyotes forward Zac Rinaldo, already playing with a broken nose, drew a match penalty for punching Colorado's Samuel Girard in the face. Just before the punch, Rinaldo delivered a crunching mid-ice hit on Nathan Mackinnon, the Avalanche's scoring leader. A fight broke out after Rinaldo's hit and, after a lengthy delay, three game misconducts were handed out, one to Mackinnon and one each to Rinaldo and Arizona forward Josh Archibald.

The fireworks seemed to ignite the Avalanche, who went on the 3:46 scoring tear.

''Anytime your best players stick up for one another I think it goes a long way in the locker room,'' said defenseman Erik Johnson, who went after Rinaldo in defense of his teammates. ''We stepped up as a group after that.''

Soderberg got the first Colorado goal, pinging his shot off the post and into the net.

''We wanted this win,'' Soderberg, who scored his second goal in 16 games, said.

Compher fired a shot off Coyotes defenseman Jason Demers and past goalie Antti Raanta at 8:24, and Yakupov sent in a backhand from the side with 6:34 to play in the second. Yakupov's eighth goal of the season ended Raanta's night at 16 saves.

Scott Wedgwood replaced Raanta, but it took just 40 seconds for the Avalanche to greet him with their fourth goal of the period. Nieto scored off Blake Comeau's pass at the 5:54 mark.

''What'd they get, three power play goals, we got none,'' Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet said. ''Our goalie was just OK tonight and a couple of guys were not good. You just put that in a blender and you come out with a 6-2 loss.''

The Coyotes spent the last 1:57 of the first period on a 4-on-3 power play after penalties to Colorado's Johnson and Gabriel Landeskog 37 seconds apart. But Arizona couldn't score before the period ended.

Johnson logged nine penalty minutes in his return to the lineup after serving a two-game suspension for boarding. The two teams combined for 74 penalty minutes.

Mark Barberio and Alexander Kerfoot had two assists each for the Avalanche.

NOTES: Avalanche D Tyson Barrie left in the first period with a hand injury, and did not return. He has a fracture in his hand, but Bednar offered no further update ... D Anton Lindholm was scratched, so Colorado played most of the game with five defensemen, and four for a time after Girard was punched and left the ice to be examined. ... Coyotes F Brad Richardson left the game in the third period with an upper-body injury. ... F Anthony Duclair returned to action after missing the past two games as a healthy scratch. ... F Brendan Perlini was scratched, his first missed game since Oct. 24. ... The Coyotes recalled D Andrew Campbell from Tucson of the American Hockey League on Saturday. D Joel Hanley and forward Nick Merkley were assigned to Tucson, four days after Merkley's NHL debut.

Trottier puts the Islanders ahead 1-0 with a first-period goal, scores three times and has three assists during the Islanders' seven-goal second, and ends his night with a third-period power-play goal. Linemate Mike Bossy's two-goal, five-point night is almost an afterthought.

It's the last game before Christmas for the Islanders, who take a 16-game home unbeaten streak (12-0-4) into the break.

MORE MOMENTS

1933: Howie Morenz of the Montreal Canadiens scores his 249th NHL goal in a 3-0 win against the Detroit Red Wings at the Forum to become the League's all-time leader. Morenz surpasses Cy Denneny, the previous record holder with 248. Morenz finishes his NHL career with 271.

1980: The Winnipeg Jets defeat the visiting Colorado Rockies 5-4 to end their 30-game winless streak (0-23-7). Willy Lindstrom's power-play goal with 1:50 remaining in the third period breaks a 4-4 tie. It's the Jets' first victory since defeating the Chicago Blackhawks 6-2 on Oct. 17. During the streak, they go through three coaches (Tommy McVie, Bill Sutherland and Mike Smith.

1988: Wayne Gretzky moves past Bobby Hull for fourth place on the NHL's all-time goal-scoring list by scoring two empty-net goals for the Kings in a 5-2 victory against the Vancouver Canucks at Pacific Coliseum. The two goals give Gretzky 611 in his NHL career, one more than Hull. He also has two assists.

1999: Paul Coffey of the Carolina Hurricanes has an assist in a 4-3 loss to the Ottawa Senators to become the first defenseman (and eighth player) in NHL history to reach 1,500 points. The milestone comes when he sets up Sami Kapanen's power-play goal late in the second period.

2006: Mike Sillinger becomes the first player in NHL history to reach double figures in goals with nine different teams when he scores his 10th of the season in the Islanders' 4-0 win against the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nassau Coliseum.

2016: Arizona Coyotes forward Shane Doan reaches two milestones on the same night at Gila River Arena. Doan plays in his 1,500th NHL game, all with the Coyotes/Winnipeg Jets franchise, and scores his 400th goal when he beats Frederik Andersen of the Toronto Maple Leafs at 19:16 of the second period. {coyotes} Keller scores in OT as Coyotes beat Capitals 3-2

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) This time, the Arizona Coyotes stayed calm at the end of a close game.

Clayton Keller scored 4:33 into overtime, and the Coyotes rallied to beat the Washington Capitals 3-2 on Friday night.

Arizona had lost seven in a row and 10 of 11. Christian Fischer tied the game with 1:01 to go in regulation, and Christian Dvorak also scored for the Coyotes.

''We had a big meeting after the last game trying to figure out why we panic and things go off the rails,'' Fischer said. ''Tonight we didn't panic. We knew if we stick with it we were going to give ourselves a chance to win.''

Max Domi set up Keller's game-winner, skating in from the left side and deking a defender with a swooping move toward the middle. Philipp Grubauer stopped Domi's shot, but Keller jumped on the rebound for his team-leading 13th goal.

''That's a world-class team,'' Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet said. ''They have Hall of Famers over there. We played a really responsible game and we cashed in our chances at the end.''

Keller's goal capped an impressive overtime for the Coyotes, who dominated the possession and limited the chances for the Capitals.

''We had the puck the whole time,'' Tocchet said. ''It's a lot of discipline because when guys are out there they want to stay out there and try again and again but we had some great changes and that's what led to that goal.''

First-place Washington had won four in a row. T.J. Oshie and Evgeny Kuznetsov scored for the Capitals, and Grubauer made 24 saves.

''We've just got to find ways to get pucks out and finish the game off,'' Oshie said. ''We did a pretty good job up until that point. Sometimes you've got to credit them. They kept coming.''

Fischer also stepped up with his ninth goal late in regulation. With Scott Wedgewood on the bench for an extra attacker, Jason Demers fired a shot from the top of the left circle. Grubauer stopped Derek Stepan's tip in front but the puck came to rest behind the goalie in the crease. Fischer swept in from the left and slid the puck into the net.

''Things change in a hurry and I thought they had way too many chances already,'' Capitals coach Barry Trotz said. "I look at as we had it, we just have to close it out. We weren't where we needed to be.''

Washington led 1-0 after two lackluster periods, but Dvorak tied it 1:28 into the third. He cycled the puck to Alex Goligoski at the point before taking the return pass atop the right circle, skating to the faceoff circle and firing into the top left corner of the net.

Kuznetsov responded with his 12th of the season. Wedgewood stopped Christian Djoos' shot from above the right circle. Kuznetsov shook off a defender, took control of the puck to the right of the net and scored behind Wedgewood, who was caught looking at the top of the crease.

Tobey Reider had a chance to tie the game on a short-handed breakaway with 9:12 to play, but was stopped easily by Grubauer in the goalie's first start since Dec. 4.

The frantic third period was a stark contrast to the first two, when each team displayed little energy despite each not playing since Tuesday.

After a scoreless first period, Oshie put the Capitals ahead at 5:40 of the second, taking a pass from Jakub Vrana and beating Wedgewood from the low slot.

NOTES: The Coyotes are 6-0-1 in their past seven home games against the Capitals. ... Washington finished with a season-low 17 shots on goal. ... Oshie has six goals and 18 points in 25 career games against Arizona. ... Dvorak's goal was his third in four games against Washington. ... Kuznetsov has scored his past four goals and eight of his 12 this season in the third period.
