{coyotes} 'It's all about money': Hayley Wickenheiser challenges NHL, stars on Olympic participation

Hayley Wickenheiser says the National Hockey League's stars need to speak up if Olympic participation is important to them.

The NHL announced in April that it would not allow its players to compete at the 2018 Winter Games in PyeongChang, South Korea. But many of its marquee players have voiced their displeasure with the decision.

"They all want to go to the Games. I think they need to be vocal and the [National Hockey League Players' Association] could do a little bit more to advocate on the players' behalf," Wickenheiser – a six-time Olympian with four hockey golds – told BNN in an interview on Thursday. "The stars in the game need to step up if they truly want to go."

The decision was a bone of contention between the NHL, its Players' Association (NHLPA), the International Olympic Committee (IOC), and the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), all of which had different priorities riding on participation.

For the players, national pride was at stake, while the NHL and its owners voiced concerns about the League's schedule, player insurance, travel, and a re-prioritization of advertising with the IOC. However, the League's perceived desire to be represented at the 2022 Games in Beijing was a bargaining chip for the IOC, potentially hoping to gain NHL participation in Korea with a 'both or none' scenario.

Reigning League MVP Connor McDavid said Wednesday he is "really upset" about missing his first Olympic opportunity as a pro. Russian superstar and six-time goal scoring champion Alex Ovechkin, meanwhile, has threatened to participate whether the NHL signs off on it or not.

Wickenheiser called the negotiations between all the parties "unfortunate."

"This is all about money, whether it's between the IOC, the IIHF and the NHL," she told BNN. "It's a power struggle and it's unfortunate [for] Canadian fans that the best players in the world won't be there."

However, Wickenheiser did see a silver lining with the potentiality of returning to an Olympic tournament without NHL participation, which was the norm prior to the League's participation at the 1998 Games in Nagano, Japan.

"I started on the national team when the men's national team was full-time and was full of amateur players here in Calgary, and there's something kind of pure and really uniquely Canadian about that, as well. It's going to make our hunt for the gold medal that much more difficult, but maybe that much more exciting, too," she said.

Wickenheiser spoke to BNN after being selected as one of Canada's Top 40 Under 40. She serves as founder and CEO of the Calgary-based Wick Hockey, a program dedicated to growing the game worldwide at a grassroots level.

{coyotes} MacLean hired as Coyotes assistant

John MacLean was hired as an assistant to Arizona Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet on Wednesday.

MacLean won the Stanley Cup with the New Jersey Devils as an assistant in 2003. He also coached New Jersey for 33 games in 2010-11 and was an assistant for the Carolina Hurricanes from 2011-14. He had been working as an analyst at NHL Network and with MSG Network, where he handled pre- and postgame coverage of the Devils.

He had 842 points (413 goals, 429 assists) in 18 NHL seasons with the Devils, San Jose Sharks, New York Rangers and Dallas Stars.

Selected by the Devils with the No. 6 pick in the 1983 NHL Draft, MacLean helped New Jersey to its first Cup championship in 1995. The two-time NHL All-Star (1989, 1991) had 83 points (35 goals, 48 assists) in 104 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

"I played against John MacLean my entire career and always felt that his hockey IQ was outstanding," Tocchet said. "We had numerous talks about systems and philosophy and John's passion to coach, and I was very impressed with him."

Scott Allen, an assistant with the Florida Panthers last season, also has joined Tocchet's staff.

"We are very pleased to have John and Scott join the Coyotes organization," general manager John Chayka said. "Both individuals bring a wealth of hockey knowledge and coaching experience to our team and we are confident that they will be great additions to head coach Rick Tocchet's staff."

{coyotes} Burke: Canada will look into Doan, Iginla for Olympic team

More than three weeks into free agency, veterans Jarome Iginla and Shane Doan remained unsigned in the NHL.

Should they fail to earn contracts, playing for Canada at the 2018 Olympics in Pyeongchang could serve as a backup plan.

Team Canada's general manager Sean Burke told TSN 1050's OverDrive on Tuesday he would consider adding both players to the roster, if they're available.

"I don't think you'd ever have to sell them (on playing in the Olympics)," he said. "I know that those are two players that have served their country in hockey a number of time and both have been impactful players for Team Canada and have enjoyed those experiences.

"Obviously, both are near the end of their NHL careers and not sure where their minds are as far as how much they think they have left to play in the NHL. Those are guys that we'll definitely consider, guys that we will think a lot about and wait to see how those situations play out."

However, Burke added that the former Kamloops Blazer teammates will have to prove they're in shape to make the team.

"(Doan and Iginla) obviously provide you with experience, character, a lot of other things," he explained. "At the end of the day, though, we do have to consider that this will be a good hockey team and everybody that plays on it will have to be able to produce and contribute and that's our first priority is making sure the guys we pick are all capable of playing."

Iginla, 40, split last season between the Colorado Avalanche and Los Angeles Kings. He scored 14 goals and added 13 assists on the season, he passed the 20-goal mark in each of the previous three seasons.

Medal Count
Doan: Three gold (2 WHC, 1 World Cup) Three WHC silver medals
Iginla: Five gold (2 Olympic, 1 WJHC, 1 WHC, 1 World Cup)

Iginla has represented Canada at three times at the Olympics, winning gold in 2002 and 2010. In total, he has played for Team Canada in seven events over the course of his career.

Doan, who turns 41 in October, scored six goals and tallied 27 points in 74 games with the Arizona Coyotes last season. He has spent his entire 21-year career with the franchise, but the team announced last month he would not be re-signed.

Doan was part of Team Canada at Torino 2006, where the team finished off the podium. He has represented Canada eight times in his career, serving as captain at three world hockey championships. In total, he owns three gold medals and three silver medals playing with Canada.

No current NHL free agents were named to either of Canada's rosters for their upcoming pre-Olympic tournaments.
