John MacLean was hired as an assistant to Arizona Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet on Wednesday.
MacLean won the Stanley Cup with the New Jersey Devils as an assistant in 2003. He also coached New Jersey for 33 games in 2010-11 and was an assistant for the Carolina Hurricanes from 2011-14. He had been working as an analyst at NHL Network and with MSG Network, where he handled pre- and postgame coverage of the Devils.
He had 842 points (413 goals, 429 assists) in 18 NHL seasons with the Devils, San Jose Sharks, New York Rangers and Dallas Stars.
Selected by the Devils with the No. 6 pick in the 1983 NHL Draft, MacLean helped New Jersey to its first Cup championship in 1995. The two-time NHL All-Star (1989, 1991) had 83 points (35 goals, 48 assists) in 104 Stanley Cup Playoff games.
"I played against John MacLean my entire career and always felt that his hockey IQ was outstanding," Tocchet said. "We had numerous talks about systems and philosophy and John's passion to coach, and I was very impressed with him."
Scott Allen, an assistant with the Florida Panthers last season, also has joined Tocchet's staff.
"We are very pleased to have John and Scott join the Coyotes organization," general manager John Chayka said. "Both individuals bring a wealth of hockey knowledge and coaching experience to our team and we are confident that they will be great additions to head coach Rick Tocchet's staff."
