{coyotes} GMs recommend centralizing goalie interference reviews

The NHL's general managers recommended Tuesday that the league give the final call on goaltender interference reviews to the Situation Room in Toronto.

NHL director of hockey operations Colin Campbell said the league would be looking into the possibility with both the National Hockey League Players' Association and the officials association, adding there would be further discussion on Wednesday, the final day of the NHL's general managers meeting.

Goaltender interference, currently decided by the on-ice officials, has been a controversial issue throughout the season with multiple coaches and players speaking out.

"No one knows what's going on," Maple Leafs head coach Mike Babcock said last week. "We better get it solved. Just saying 'Okay, we're going to leave it the way it is …' No chance. Get it fixed.

"Let's get it fixed before the playoffs, so we all know the rules."

Through Saturday night's action, 145 scoring plays were challenged for goaltender inference: 98 calls were upheld (68 per cent), 47 on-ice rulings were overturned (32 per cent), wiping out 41 goals while turning six non-goal rulings into goals.

The NHL general managers also discussed making a change to offside reviews Tuesday, but did not gain enough support to make a change. Roughly 10 of the NHL's 31 general managers believed there was a problem with the current rule.

"Players know the rule," Campbell said of goals currently being disallowed if their back foot is off the ice when entering the zone ahead of the puck.
