Oliver Ekman-Larsson signed an eight-year contract extension with the Arizona Coyotes on Sunday.
FInancial terms of the contract were not released.
The defenseman, who turns 27 on July 17, has one season remaining on a six-year contract he signed March 15, 2013. He was eligible to become an unrestricted free agent after this season.
"This is a very happy day for me and my family," Ekman-Larsson told the Coyotes website. "I have always loved living and playing in Arizona and this is where I want to be. I signed with the Coyotes because I believe in our team, I believe in our fans and I believe in this market and I want to win here."
Ekman-Larsson had 42 points (14 goals, 28 assists) in 82 games for the Coyotes last season and led them in average ice time (23:41 per game). He has played all but 12 games during the past seven seasons.
"Oliver is one of the NHL's premiere defenseman and we are ecstatic to have him signed for the long-term," Coyotes general manager John Chayka said. "He's a special player and person and we want to build our team around him. You can't win in this League without a star, elite defenseman and we're fortunate to have that in OEL. We look forward to many years ahead with him as our leader on and off the ice."
Ekman-Larsson was selected by the Coyotes with the No. 6 pick in the 2009 NHL Draft. He has 290 points (102 goals, 188 assists) in 576 games in eight NHL seasons.
