{coyotes} Vrbata retires from hockey after 16 NHL seasons

Radim Vrbata retired from professional hockey after 16 NHL seasons Monday.

The 37-year-old forward had 14 points (five goals, nine assists) in 42 games with the Florida Panthers last season.

Selected by the Colorado Avalanche in the seventh round (No. 212) of the 1999 NHL Draft, Vrbata had 623 points (284 goals, 339 assists) in 1,057 games with the Panthers, Avalanche, Carolina Hurricanes, Chicago Blackhawks, Arizona Coyotes, Tampa Bay Lightning and Vancouver Canucks.

"I want to thank the fans and all seven organizations that I played for ... and all the management and coaches who took a chance on me and gave me the opportunity to play in the NHL for 16 years," Vrbata said in a statement issued by his agent. "I consider myself extremely fortunate to have played over 1,000 NHL games and I am very grateful to have been part of the NHL for so long."

Vrbata scored at least 20 goals in a season six times, including an NHL career high 35 with the Coyotes in 2011-12, and played in the 2015 NHL All-Star Game. He's third among players drafted in 1999 with 284 goals, behind Daniel Sedin (393) and Henrik Zetterberg (337), and fourth in games played and points.
