{coyotes} Kuemper helps Coyotes top Wild 4-0 to continue playoff push

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) Darcy Kuemper has gone from backup to backstop in goal for Arizona this season.

Kuemper made 36 saves for his second straight home shutout and Josh Archibald had two goals as the Coyotes continued a playoff push with a 4-0 victory over Minnesota in the closest thing to a playoff elimination game each team has faced this season.

''We wouldn't be where we are at without his game,'' Coyotes forward Alex Galchenyuk said of Kuemper. ''Again tonight, he made a couple of game-changing saves. He's been our best player the whole year. You have to give him all the credit.''

Kuemper began the season behind Antti Raanta, but took over when Raanta suffered a season-ending lower-body injury in late November. Kuemper has career highs in starts (53) and victories (26) and has started 20 straight games, tied for third-longest for a goalie in franchise history.

''A lot of guys are feeding off him,'' Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet said. ''He's calm during the off days. He's calm during practice and he's calm during the game. That exudes a lot of confidence to your players when your goalie is like that.

''Goalies can do that to a team, lift a team, and obviously, `Kemps' is the heartbeat of our team.''

Kuemper had his second shutout in three games overall, and the Coyotes moved within one point of Colorado for the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference with three games to play. The Avalanche have four games remaining.

The Coyotes, who have not made the playoffs since 2012, have won 10 of their last 12 at home.

One of Kuemper's key saves came with three minutes remaining, when he stopped a rising slap shot from the slot by Brad Hunt with three minutes remaining to keep the game 2-0, Kuemper shut out Chicago 1-0 on Tuesday and has three shutouts in March.

''It feels good,'' Kuemper said. ''Huge win. It keeps us alive. The guys did a great job in front of me. They allowed me to see it (puck). It always takes a full team to get a shutout, and we had everyone tonight. We need some help. We need Colorado to lose. But we feel like if we win these last three, we have a good chance here.''

Devan Dubnyk made 19 saves for the Wild, who have lost eight of 11 since beating Tampa Bay 3-0 on March 7, when they were three points ahead of Arizona and four points ahead of Colorado for the second wild-card spot in the west. The Wild pulled Dubnyk with 2:59 left.

Galchenyuk scored his 18th goal in the first period, and Archibald and Vinnie Hinostroza had empty-netters in the final two minutes for the Coyotes (38-33-8), who have rebounded after losing six of seven, including one in overtime and two by shootout. They had nine goals in those seven games.

Galchenyuk poked a loose puck past Dubnyk at 7:48 of the first period after Oliver Ekman-Larsson flipped a shot on net from the left circle and Dubnyk could not control the bouncing puck.

''Keep fighting,'' Galchenyuk said. ''Same approach we've had for the last month or two now. Same mentality. We keep pushing. We're still in it. A couple of games left. We have to battle it out.''

The Wild's Jason Zucker had a breakaway with six minutes left in the first period, but could not get off a shot when Niklas Hjalmarsson was penalized for slashing. The Coyotes killed the penalty to preserve their lead.

Archibald gave the Coyotes a 2-0 lead in the final minute of the second period when he skated in on the right side and beat Dubnyk with a wrist shot high to the glove side.

NOTES: Coyotes F Nick Schmaltz to a seven-year contract extension through the 2025-26 season on Saturday. Schmaltz has five goals and 14 points in 17 games with the Coyotes after being acquired from Chicago on Nov. 25. He has not played since Dec. 30 because of a lower-body injury. ... Wild F Zach Parise (lower-body injury) missed his fourth straight game. He has a team-high 26 goals. ... The Wild finish the season with home games against Winnipeg and Boston and a road game at Dallas. All have clinched playoff berths. ... Dubnyk leads NHL goalies in games (66) and road victories (19) this season.

UP NEXT

Wild: Play host to Winnipeg on Tuesday. The Wild have won the first four games of the five-game season series.

Coyotes: Play host to Los Angeles on Tuesday.

{coyotes} Schmaltz signs seven-year contract with Coyotes

Nick Schmaltz signed a seven-year contract with the Arizona Coyotes on Saturday. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The 23-year-old forward has 25 points (seven goals, 18 assists) in 40 games this season. He has not played since sustaining a season-ending knee injury Dec. 30 and could have become a restricted free agent after this season.

"I'm very excited to sign a long-term contract with the Coyotes," Schmaltz said. "We have a great core of young, talented players in Arizona and I'm looking forward to coming back healthy next season and contributing for many years to come. We have a very bright future here and I'm thrilled to be a part of it."

Schmaltz was acquired by the Coyotes in a trade with the Chicago Blackhawks for forwards Brendan Perlini and Dylan Strome on Nov. 25, 2018.

Selected by Chicago with the No. 20 pick in the 2014 NHL Draft, Schmaltz has 105 points (34 goals, 71 assists) in 179 regular-season games.

"Nick is a highly skilled, creative, young center with extremely high upside," Arizona general manager John Chayka said. "Getting Nick signed to a long-term extension is another positive step towards building a sustainable contender here in the Valley. Ownership continues to commit the resources necessary to solidify our core group of players for years to come."

The Coyotes (37-33-8) are three points behind the Colorado Avalanche for the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Western Conference. They host the Minnesota Wild on Sunday (5 p.m. ET; FS-A Plus; FS-WI, FS-N+, ESPN+, NHL.TV).

{coyotes} MacKinnon's shootout goal lifts Avs past Coyotes 3-2

DENVER (AP) Despite giving up a late lead, Colorado still wound up ahead.

Nathan MacKinnon's shootout goal lifted the Avalanche over the Arizona Coyotes 3-2 on Friday night and they tightened their grip on the second Western Conference wild-card berth.

MacKinnon and Derick Brassard also had power-play goals in regulation for Colorado, which extended its lead over Arizona to three points in the race for the wild-card berth. Both teams have four games remaining.

Oliver Ekman-Larsson had both goals for the Coyotes, including the tying goal with 51 seconds remaining in regulation. Neither team could score in the extra period, leading to the shootout.

''That was a bit frustrating to give them a point, but I mean, we got two points and that's the biggest thing,'' Colorado's Tyson Barrie said. ''That kind of, again, puts us in control of our own destiny.''

The Avalanche also got 42 saves from Philipp Grubauer, who also stopped all three shots by Arizona in the shootout. Colorado has won six of its last seven games, including the past four at home.

''It was a little bit closer than we wanted it to be,'' Grubauer said. ''We need to stay on the gas a little bit in the last period. It's quite a bit loud in here going into the last period with a lead and giving up a lot of shots. But on the other side, we're doing a great job defending, too. A little bit more interesting than we needed it to be, but it was good.

''Huge two points.''

Arizona's loss clinched Western Conference playoff spots for both St. Louis and Vegas - both of whom lost Friday night, but still were able to celebrate postseason berths.

Trailing 2-0, Arizona got on the board with eight minutes remaining when Ekman-Larsson scored on a slap shot from the left point that beat Grubauer.

The Coyotes tied it with 51 seconds remaining in regulation on Ekman-Larsson's second goal of the night, a wrist shot from inside the left circle.

''We said that we have to keep working hard and that's all we can do and maybe we'll get back in the game,'' Ekman-Larsson said. ''That's what we did, and I think that could be a huge point at the end of the day, so we'll take that one and move forward and hopefully get in the playoffs, but it's going to be a little bit harder now.''

The teams battled through a scoreless first period before the Avalanche broke through for a score while on the power play at 13:37 of the second. Gabriel Landeskog, playing for the first time since suffering a shoulder injury in early March, shot a pass across the crease to MacKinnon, who knocked the puck past Darcy Kuemper, squeezing it under the goalie's stick.

It was the fourth game in a row in which the Avalanche scored a power-play goal.

Colorado made it 2-0 with 4 seconds left in the second period on another power-play score. Kuemper rebuffed a series of shots by the Avalanche, but Brassard got hold of a loose puck between the circles and fired it back into the net for his 14th goal of the season.

NOTES: Landeskog missed the previous nine games after suffering a shoulder separation March 7 at Dallas. ... The seven straight starts by Grubauer are a career high. ... It was Ekman-Larsson's ninth career multi-goal game and his first of the season.

Coyotes: Return home to host Minnesota on Sunday.

Avalanche: Visit St. Louis on Monday night.

{coyotes} NHL, William Hill announce multiyear partnership

NEW YORK -- William Hill US, America's leading sports book operator, today announced a strategic partnership agreement with the National Hockey League (NHL), naming William Hill as an "Official Sports Betting Partner of the NHL."

"This new partnership is yet another example of the innovative yet practical approach our League is taking with the emerging sports gaming industry," said NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman. "We continue to work directly with stakeholders to cultivate relationships across the sports betting landscape. Partnering with William Hill US, a leader in both the sportsbook and mobile betting marketplace, provides a tremendous opportunity to further fan engagement."

"We are thrilled to become an official sports betting partner of the National Hockey League," said Joe Asher, CEO of William Hill US. "Commissioner Bettman and his team at the NHL have been at the forefront of understanding the opportunities to engage fans through sports betting. Combined with our existing partnerships with the Vegas Golden Knights and New Jersey Devils, we are extremely excited to continue to build our relationship with the NHL."

Betting on NHL games has increased 38% during the 2018-19 season at William Hill's Nevada Sports Books. Additionally, according to a recent Nielsen Sports report, NHL fans, when compared to fans of other sports leagues, are more likely to not only wager on their own sport, but also on all other major 'Big 4' sports leagues. "We appreciate the progressive and collaborative approach of the NHL and are encouraged by the early results," Asher said.

As an official sports betting partner of the NHL, William Hill will receive promotional media in relevant NHL markets and will leverage branding opportunities in connection with the League's calendar of marquee events.
