{coyotes} Price stops 33 shots in Canadiens' 4-1 win over Coyotes

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- The Montreal Canadiens arrived in the desert a day early and had an extra jump in their step.

The Arizona Coyotes had a day off following a long road trip and labored from the start.

The result was predictable.

Carey Price stopped 33 shots, Brendan Gallagher and Shea Weber scored in the opening minute of the first two periods, and the Montreal Canadiens rolled to a 4-1 win over the Arizona Coyotes on Wednesday night.

''Those goals at the start of periods are huge,'' Gallagher said after his 500th NHL game. ''We know what those are like when they go against us and to get those, it carries over to the rest of the periods.''

Montreal got to town early for an extra day of practice and acclimation after beating Toronto 5-2 on Saturday.

The Canadiens scored on their first shift in each of the first two periods. Jonathan Drouin added his third goal in two games, Nick Cousins also scored and Price was superb as usual against Arizona, improving to 12-1 all-time.

''There's always going to be something you have to tweak and that's an area we spoke to our team about, starting and finishing strong,'' Montreal coach Claude Julien said.

Arizona fell behind as fans were still getting to their seats and never recovered, dropping to 7-2-1 in its last 10 games.

Jakob Chychrun scored for the Coyotes and Antti Raanta made 32 saves, giving up one goal when his skate blade fell off.

''The road trip was pretty good to us, then we came home and got some humble pie,'' forward Derek Stepan said.

The Coyotes had a successful road trip back East, winning three of four, but didn't get back from Buffalo until Tuesday.

Arizona was sluggish in its first home game in 11 days, giving up Gallagher's goal and plenty of pressure by the Canadiens.

The Coyotes were better late in the opening period, but got a bad break early in the second when Raanta's skate blade broke off. Weber scored from near the blue line as Arizona's goalie desperately tried diving back as his blade lay on the ice.

''Those are killers,'' Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet said. ''You can't give up freebies to Carey Price. He's too good a goalie.''

Cousins made it 3-0 early in the third period, one-timing a nifty pass through the crease by Nick Suzuki.

Chychrun scored on a similar feed from Phil Kessel.

Drouin was credited with a goal when Coyotes defenseman Jason Demers accidentally swiped the puck into his own net on a mishit shot.

''We're going to have some of these spots throughout the year. This is going to happen again,'' Tocchet said. ''We're going to be in a tough spot and we can't just say well, this is our schedule, it's this or it's that. I don't care what it is, we can't use it as an excuse.''

NOTES: C Brad Richardson missed his third straight game and Jordan Oesterle his sixth straight, each with an upper-body injury. The Coyotes hope to have both back soon. ... Gallagher has five goals and three assists in his past eight games. ... Montreal is 19-8-4 against the Coyotes since they moved from Winnipeg in 1996.

{coyotes} Schmaltz's shootout winner lifts Coyotes over Sabres

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) Nick Schmaltz scored in the shootout to help the Arizona Coyotes beat the Buffalo Sabres 3-2 on Monday night.

Conor Garland and Carl Soderberg scored in regulation for Arizona, which improved to 7-3-1. Darcy Kuemper made 24 saves and stopped all three Sabres attempts in the shootout.

Schmaltz scored the game-winner on a low shot to the glove side.

Jack Eichel and Jeff Skinner scored for Buffalo (9-2-2), which had won four of five. Carter Hutton made 41 saves.

The Coyotes dominated the last part of the game, outshooting the Sabres 30-15 over the final two periods.

Both teams had prime scoring opportunities in overtime. The Sabres hit the post twice, and Arizona's Clayton Keller nearly found himself with an empty net after Hutton mishandled the puck.

The Sabres got off to a solid start, using their speed to find openings in the offensive zone. Eichel opened the scoring with his seventh goal 3:31 into the game, ripping a hard power-play shot from the left circle after a Sabres faceoff win.

Skinner made it 2-0 when he finished a terrific give-and-go sequence. Marcus Johansson got the puck back to Skinner, who converted a one-timer for his seventh goal at 11:16.

The Coyotes got on the board just before the end of the first thanks to a bad-angle goal from Garland. Stationed near the Sabres end line, Garland snuck the puck past Hutton on the short side with 1:10 remaining.

After a series of impressive saves by Hutton in the second period, including a stop on Christian Dvorak from point-blank range, Arizona evened the score on the power play with 3:28 remaining. A tipped puck deflected high into the air, fell onto Hutton's back and went into the net. Soderberg was credited with the goal.

NOTES: The Sabres had a video tribute in the first period welcoming Coyotes assistant Phil Housley back to Buffalo. Housley had a turbulent stint as head coach of the Sabres from 2017-19, but also spent eight seasons with Buffalo (1982-90) during his Hall of Fame career as a player. ... D Marco Scandella, LW Jimmy Vesey and D William Borgen were scratched for Buffalo. Borgen was recalled from the AHL's Rochester Americans on Sunday. ... C Brad Richardson, D Kyle Capobianco and G Eric Comrie were scratched for Phoenix. ... The teams don't meet again until Feb. 29 in Arizona.

{coyotes} Hayton scores 1st goal, Raanta leads Coyotes past Devils 5-3

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) Barrett Hayton has been patiently waiting for his chance to get back into the Arizona Coyotes' lineup, and the 19-year-old made the most of it against Jack Hughes and the New Jersey Devils.

Hayton scored his first NHL goal early in the third period, Antti Raanta was outstanding in making 32 saves and the Coyotes overcame two deficits to beat Hughes and the Devils 5-3 on Friday night.

''I think this is what you dream of for so long and every day you're learning, so you're trying to be sharp every day,'' Hayton said. ''Mentally you don't really take any breaks, so I think I was prepared and I had some fresh legs. So that was like an advantage for me to get out there and get kind of wheeling around.''

Hayton got a chance to play in his third career game and first since Oct. 12 because Brad Richardson was hurt in a loss to the New York Islanders on Thursday.

With the score tied 3-all, Hayton was in the right spot to redirect Nick Schmaltz's pass under Devils goalie MacKenzie Blackwood to cap a 2-on-1 break 1:45 into the final period.

''Definitely a pretty cool experience,'' Hayton said. ''It's something that I dreamed of for the longest time and it was a great play by Smaltzy there.''

Schmaltz, Michael Grabner and Oliver Ekman-Larsson also scored as the Coyotes won their fifth in six games. Clayton Keller added an empty-net goal for his first of the season to ice it with 1:40 to play.

Hughes, the No. 1 pick in this year's draft, had his best game, scoring once and setting up goals by Sami Vatanen and Pavel Zacha.

''I think tonight was a game I felt pretty good in, obviously,'' said Hughes, who had two points in his first eight games. ''It would have been nice for the team to win. We played a really good hockey game, made a few mistakes. That's not a good loss.''

Taylor Hall was impressed with his linemate.

''You can sense he wants the puck. He is confident,'' Hall said. ''I really didn't realize, but this is the first time he has played against people really older than him and there is going to be an adjustment there.''

Blackwood had a tough night in net, giving up four goals on 17 shots as the Devils' modest two-game winning streak was snapped.

New Jersey had chances to tie it late but Raanta denied Wayne Simmonds on a power play and Nico Hischier hit the post with a shot.

Hughes had a goal and two assists in the first two periods to help the Devils take leads of 2-0 and 3-2.

The Coyotes rallied each time and the teams were tied 3-all heading into the third.

Ekman-Larsson tied it at 3 with a shot from the left circle that seemed to go right through Blackwood's glove.

Zacha had given New Jersey the lead 31 seconds earlier from the left circle after being sprung by Hughes' long pass.

Hughes also had the primary assist on Vatanen's game-opening goal at 16:29 of the first period. The defenseman took a cross-ice pass and sent a puck from the corner that hit off the skate of Coyotes defenseman Alex Goligoski and deflected in.

Hughes got his second goal less than two minutes later with a laser shot from the right faceoff circle into the top corner on a power play.

''He's fun to watch when he plays like this,'' Blackwood said.

Schmaltz woke up the Coyotes with 17 seconds left in the period, taking Ekman-Larsson's pass and beating Blackwood.

Grabner tied the game 2-all at 2:01 of the second, scoring his 22nd career short-handed goal with a backhand on a breakaway.

NOTES: Grabner is second among active players in short-handed goals, trailing only Brad Marchand (26) of Boston. ... Coyotes D Jason Demers got his 200th point on Schmaltz's goal. He is the third player taken in the fifth round or later in the 2008 draft to reach 200 points. The others are Cam Atkinson (Columbus) and Jared Spurgeon (Minnesota). ... The Devils placed D Connor Carrick on injured reserve with an upper-body injury sustained in practice Thursday. D Will Butcher was activated off IR.

UP NEXT

Coyotes: Finish a four-game road trip at Buffalo on Monday.

Devils: Host the Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday, their second game in 11 days.

[cactuswings 4098] Re: Storage & Other News

Hi Felipe,

i don't know if there is such thing as an average time for CRJs cargo conversions, but it is worth noting CRJ2 XA-VCX took seven months for its cargo conversion, while XA-VCS conversion lasted nine months.

Saludos,

Mayer

{coyotes} Coyotes 'feel like a playoff team,' Stepan says

NEW YORK -- Derek Stepan hesitated because he didn't want to get too far ahead of himself by talking about the Stanley Cup Playoffs in October.

But the Arizona Coyotes center eventually couldn't contain his optimism.

"As of right now we have the machine oiled well," Stepan said following practice at Madison Square Garden on Monday. "When I first got to Arizona it was like, 'OK, which direction are we going in?' Now the ship is moving pretty quickly in the right direction. So, yes, I would tell you that it does feel like a playoff team."

The Coyotes (4-2-1) haven't made the playoffs since the 2011-12 season, but since then they also haven't been as fast and as deep up front as they are this season.

They've won three in a row and are 4-0-1 since losing the first two games of the season. Arizona, which counts defense and goaltending as its hallmarks, has scored 14 goals during its winning streak and 20 in the five-game point streak.

The Coyotes missed the playoffs by four points last season largely because they averaged 2.55 per game, tied for 28th in the League.

They're averaging 3.00 goals per game through seven games this season, and that includes scoring a total of one in their first two games, each regulation losses. This while allowing 1.86 goals per game, which is second in the NHL to the Anaheim Ducks (1.78).

Arizona starts a stretch of four consecutive road games at the New York Rangers on Tuesday (7 p.m. ET; MSG, FS-A, FS-A Plus, NHL.TV).

"It's just been more of a consistent game," coach Rick Tocchet said. "This team can't afford, especially in the past, to have four, five or six guys have an off night. We just can't. Some other teams can. Now I'm finding that we don't have as many passengers. Very rarely at the end of a game do you say five or six guys weren't into it. Those numbers are a lot less."

The offseason trade for forward Phil Kessel and the return of forward Nick Schmaltz from injury have been the two most impactful changes from last season.

Kessel, acquired from the Pittsburgh Penguins on June 29, is the right wing on the Coyotes top line with Stepan and Clayton Keller. He has four points (two goals, two assists), but he leads the Coyotes with 20 shots on goal and he has points on three of their six power-play goals, all scored in the past five games.

"He knows how to score and he's giving everybody around him more confidence just being around him," defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson said. "At the same time guys that we're playing against focus on Phil and maybe it gives some other guys a bit of a break."

Schmaltz's return from knee surgery gives the Coyotes more skill and speed on their second line.

He leads Arizona with eight points (three goals, five assists), all in the past five games. He scored 14 points (five goals, nine assists) in 17 games with the Coyotes after being traded to Arizona by the Chicago Blackhawks on Nov. 25 but missed the final 43 games because of the injury.

Tocchet said Schmaltz's line, with Christian Dvorak at center and Conor Garland on the left wing, has been the Coyotes' most consistent. Garland leads the team with four goals and Dvorak has three. He has also won 68.2 percent of his face-offs (45 of 66).

"[Schmaltz] can find that open ice and and be patient with the puck," Tocchet said. "He doesn't really get rid of pucks. He can find somebody. He just doesn't throw pucks or dump it all the time. He can make a play and I think that goes a long way. He's shooting the puck and he's got a great shot."

Tocchet wonders if Schmaltz would have made the difference to help Arizona get into the playoffs last season. He specifically pointed to a four-game road trip from March 18-24, when the Coyotes scored a total of four goals and went 0-3-1 against the Tampa Bay Lightning, Florida Panthers, New Jersey Devils and New York Islanders.

"A goal here or there," Tocchet said. "Is there a goal that maybe he would have gotten or maybe he would have made a play? Yeah, you take a playmaker out of our lineup it's a big thing for us. He's a guy that can make plays."

The Coyotes' forward depth this season doesn't stop at the second line, a problem in previous seasons.

The third line of Carl Soderberg, who was acquired in a trade from the Colorado Avalanche on June 25, Lawson Crouse and Christian Fischer might be the Coyotes most trustworthy defensively. Soderberg also has five points (two goals, three assists).

Their fourth line of Brad Richardson, Michael Grabner and Vinnie Hinostroza is arguably their fastest line.

"I talked to some guys in training camp and I was like, 'Oh, you can really feel how we stepped it up from last year,' " said Ekman-Larsson, the Coyotes captain. "I mean, it's hard to practice against our forward group right now and I think that's good for 'D' corps too. That's how we get better too.

"It's been a long time since we've had a team like this."
