{coyotes} Sharks score 4 straight to rally past Coyotes 4-2

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- The Sharks and Coyotes both had stretches playing their best hockey Saturday night. San Jose just kept its run going longer.

Logan Couture scored twice and the Sharks got four unanswered goals to rally past Arizona 4-2 Saturday for their 11th win in 13 games.

Couture bookended San Jose's comeback, starting it midway through the first period and completing it with an empty-netter. He has five goals and 14 points in his past 10 games.

Dylan Gambrell and Timo Meier also scored for San Jose.

The Sharks extended their NHL record by winning their 45th consecutive game in which they have allowed fewer than three goals. They broke the mark in a 4-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Friday.

''Big resiliency,'' San Jose coach Peter DeBoer said. ''We settled down and got to our game, and the next 50 minutes probably some of the best hockey we've played this year.''

Nick Schmaltz and Derek Stepan scored on the Coyotes' first two shots, but Martin Jones stymied the Coyotes the rest of the way. Jones made 21 saves while starting on back-to-back days for the first time this season.

''(The) first seven or eight minutes, I think was our best hockey of the year,'' Arizona coach Rick Tocchet said. ''We had four Grade As (shot chances). Then it just kind of unraveled.''

Gambrell tied it early in the second period on a tricky angle from the right side, and Meier put San Jose ahead with a tip-in at 8:52 of the second.

San Jose, which has the most effective penalty kill in the league, killed off three penalties in the third period while giving up only one shot. The Sharks have given up an NHL-low nine power-play goals.

''It's won us so many games,'' Couture said. ''Imagine if our kill was at 85 with all the penalties we're taking, we would have lost a lot of these games that we've been able to win.''

The Coyotes, who had been 6-2-2 in their last 10 games, had scored at least a point in their last nine game against Pacific Division opponents.

Coyotes goaltender Atti Raanta, who missed the previous two games because of illness, made 26 saves.

''We found a way,'' Couture said. ''Kind of held on at the end there. Would have liked to attack more in the third (period) instead of sitting back like we did, but we'll take the win right now, division game.''

NOTES: Sharks C Antti Suomela did not play after taking a hard hit in the third period of a victory over Los Angeles on Friday. ... Both teams were playing the second of back-to-back games. ... D Erik Karlsson had an assist for the Sharks and has five points in his last four games. ... The Coyotes acquired minor league D Vili Saarijarvi from Detroit for G Eric Comrie. ... The Coyotes recalled F Michael Chaput from Tucson of the American Hockey League. He was a healthy scratch.

{coyotes} Having won 10 of 12, Sharks face Coyotes next

Winners of 10 of their past 12 games, the San Jose Sharks will try to continue their climb up the Pacific Division standings when they face the second-place Arizona Coyotes on Saturday night in Glendale, Ariz., in the second half of a back-to-back for both teams.

The Sharks, who began the season with four consecutive losses and had another early stretch that saw them drop seven of eight games, have moved back into fourth place in the Pacific thanks to their latest run of victories. San Jose trails first-place Edmonton by just six points.

San Jose bounced back from a lethargic 5-1 setback to visiting Winnipeg on Wednesday to cruise past the visiting Los Angeles Kings 4-1 on Friday afternoon.

Martin Jones had 33 saves and added an assist on Noah Gregor's first NHL career goal, and Patrick Marleau scored his 557th career goal to move past Johnny Bucyk into 27th place on the NHL's all-time scoring list as the Sharks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period and led 4-0 after two periods.

"I thought that was going to be the test tonight," San Jose coach Peter DeBoer said of his team's rebounding from the ugly loss to the Jets. "Can we recognize what we didn't do last game and get it fixed tonight? I thought we did that. We were much more competitive in all areas on the ice."

"Yeah, that was not our best effort the other night," said Jones, who lost his shutout when Kyle Clifford scored with just 1:49 remaining. "Great game tonight. I thought we played well all over the ice. Great bounce-back for sure."

Marleau, who needs three goals to catch Guy Lafleur (660) for 26th place and is four goals behind Mike Modano in 25th place, scored his sixth goal of the season at the 7:26 mark, and Marc-Edouard Vlasic made it 2-0 less than six minutes later.

"It's important to get that lead," said Joe Thornton. "Last game, we didn't have a very good game and we addressed that. To come out here and get two quick ones is huge, and then to follow up in the second period and get two more ... it's a good game for the guys."

Thornton assisted on Marleau's opening goal.

"Some of those names around Patty's name, it's just incredible," Thornton said. "It's going to be fun to watch him catch some more guys."

San Jose also set an NHL record with the victory, winning its 44th consecutive game when allowing two or fewer goals.

Second-place Arizona moved within one point of the Oilers for the lead in the Pacific Division with a 2-1 shootout loss against the Vegas Golden Knights on Friday afternoon in Las Vegas. Alex Tuch scored the game-winner in the third round of the shootout.

"It would have been great to win this one, but if we keep bagging points, we're going to be in good shape," Coyotes defenseman Jason Demers said.

"We played a good hockey game," added Arizona coach Rick Tocchet. "We deserved better. I'm proud of the guys. We played hard."

{coyotes} Alex Tuch lifts Golden Knights past Coyotes in shootout

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Alex Tuch scored in regulation and added the shootout winner in the Vegas Golden Knights' 2-1 victory over the Arizona Coyotes on Friday.

Vegas' Malcolm Subban stopped 35 shots in his third straight start, including two monster saves in the final 12 seconds of regulation, and two more in overtime, turning away Phil Kessel.

Subban went into the shootout a perfect 16 for 16 in his career, and stopped two of three shots he faced.

Jakob Chychrun scored for the Coyotes, and Darcy Kuemper made 37 saves.

Vegas played its second straight overtime game and sixth in November. Arizona played in its third straight overtime game and , and seventh this month.

Arizona is 6-2-2 against Pacific Division teams and has earned a point in nine straight games (6-0-3) against them.

Tuch opened the scoring when he skated through the slot just at the right time to deflect Nic Hague's shot from the point past Kuemper for a power-play goal. The Golden Knights have the fifth-best home power play this season, while Arizona arrived in Vegas ranked 21st with its road penalty kill.

Chychrun tied it with his sixth goal of the season, finding a found a way to snipe a wrister by Subban's shoulder and into the top corner.

NOTES: Vegas scored a first-period goal in its first 11 home games of the season, but has been held scoreless in the first period in three of its last four home games. ... Chychrun is two games shy of playing in the 200th of his career.

{coyotes} Dvorak scores 2, adds shootout winner as Coyotes top Ducks

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Christian Dvorak's approach was to get to the front of the net for scoring chances, and he executed it to perfection twice before finishing with a flourish.

Dvorak scored in the fourth round of the shootout after getting two goals in regulation, and the Arizona Coyotes beat the Anaheim Ducks 4-3 Wednesday night.

Conor Garland scored on Arizona's second shot of the shootout, but Ondrej Kase answered for the Ducks. Dvorak then won it as the second shooter of the fourth round.

''I like to get my head up and try to see what's open there,'' Dvorak said.

Alex Goligoski scored to force overtime and Darcy Kuemper stopped 31 shots to help the Coyotes win for the fourth time in six games. Arizona also moved to two points behind the Edmonton Oilers for first place in the Pacific Division.

''I'm happy we won,'' Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet said. ''Two points behind Edmonton and all that stuff, but we've to play better defensively and players have to understand that.''

Brendan Guhle, Sam Steel and Troy Terry scored for Anaheim, and John Gibson finished with 25 saves.

In overtime, the Coyotes got a power play after a slashing penalty to the Ducks' Max Jones with 2:19 left, but couldn't score.

Terry's goal at 10 minutes of the third period gave the Ducks their first lead of the game, 3-2. But the Coyotes tied it 38 seconds later when Goligoski's shot hit Ducks defenseman Hampus Lindholm in his backside and ricocheted into the net.

''It was a fun game, they play a fun style,'' Terry said. ''It's hard to lose it that way, in a shootout, but there's a lot of positives for us.''

Cam Fowler had two assists for the Ducks, who've lost four of five but have earned points in three of four. Guhle scored his first goal of the season at 6:22 of the first period.

''Just a solid road game,'' Ducks coach Dallas Eakins said. ''In overtime, that's a tough kill when its 4-on-3 and they (penalty kill) did a great, great job.''

Dvorak scored on the game's first power play 3:02 in. Oliver Ekman-Larsson's slap shot from out high hit Dvorak's stick and the puck went over Gibson's glove. Dvorak has eight goals on the season which is second on the team.

Ekman-Larsson, the Coyotes' captain, moved into 11th place on the franchise all-time points list with 344.

The Ducks tied it soon after. Ryan Getzlaf sent a pass toward the net, where Guhle was able to put the puck past Kuemper despite the presence of Coyotes defenseman Ilya Lyubushkin. Getzlaf has points in six straight games.

Arizona took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission with Dvorak taking advantage of a deflection off the stick of Anaheim's Erik Gudbranson. Vinnie Hinostroza shot the puck toward the crease, and Dvorak was in front for a backhand with 1:38 left.

''That's where goals are scored, so that's where I try to get to,'' Dvorak said.

The Coyotes missed chances to build on the lead in the second period before Steel put in a loose puck at the 11:42 mark, tying the score.

Gibson stretched his right leg just far enough to stop a point-blank attempt from Arizona's Michael Grabner with 3:53 to go in the second.

NOTES: Eric Comrie, who hasn't appeared in a game all season, was the backup goaltender for the Coyotes with Antti Raanta scratched due to illness. ... F Lawson Crouse missed his second straight game with a head injury. ... F Phil Kessel played in his 800th straight game, the seventh-longest streak in NHL history. He hasn't missed a game since Oct. 31, 2009. ... Ducks D Michael Del Zotto was scratched for the second straight game. ... An assist for F Nick Ritchie in the second period was his 100th career NHL point.

{coyotes} Nov. 27: Howe reaches three milestones

THIS DATE IN HISTORY: Nov. 27

Gordie Howe reaches three major milestones on the same day during a span of nine years.

1960: Howe becomes the first player in NHL history to have 1,000 points when he assists on a first-period goal by Howie Glover in the Detroit Red Wings' 2-0 victory against the Toronto Maple Leafs at Olympia Stadium. Howe's 1,000th point comes in his 938th NHL game.

1965: Howe scores his 600th NHL goal during Detroit's 3-2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens. He is the first player in League history to score 600 goals.

1969: To complete his personal hat trick of milestones on this date, Howe has two assists in a 5-1 victory against the Los Angeles Kings to become the first NHL player with 1,700 points. He gets point No. 1,700 in his 1,567th regular-season game.

MORE MOMENTS

1941: The Boston Bruins tie an NHL record by scoring four goals in the 10-minute overtime period to defeat the Brooklyn Americans 6-2 at Madison Square Garden. Overtime is a mandatory 10-minute period before being discontinued in November 1942. When the NHL reinstitutes OT in 1983, the format is changed to a five-minute sudden-death period.

1946: Assistant coach Dit Clapper comes out of retirement to help the Bruins on defense, replacing the injured Jack Crawford. He gets a standing ovation from 14,000 fans at Boston Garden. The inspired Bruins defeat the New York Rangers 5-2.

Dit Clapper

1974: The Canadiens begin an NHL-record 23-game road undefeated streak (14-0 with nine ties) with a 3-2 win against the Pittsburgh Penguins at Civic Arena. Jacques Lemaire scores the winning goal at 11:54 of the third period.

1991: The Penguins hold a 10-minute candlelight ceremony in honor of coach Bob Johnson, who died one day earlier, prior to their game against the New Jersey Devils at Civic Arena. Pittsburgh then rolls to an 8-4 victory, giving Scotty Bowman, who has stepped in after Johnson becomes ill, his 750th NHL win.

Bob Johnson

2007: Mats Sundin becomes the first player to score 400 goals as a member of the Maple Leafs. The milestone comes in a 4-3 shootout loss to Montreal at Air Canada Centre. Sundin's 400th goal comes with 17.6 seconds remaining in the third period. Sundin scores 420 of his 564 NHL goals with Toronto, and he is inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2012.

2015: Dave Tippett gets his 500th win as an NHL coach when the Arizona Coyotes defeat the Calgary Flames 2-1 at Gila River Arena. Oliver Ekman-Larsson's goal with 39.9 seconds left in overtime makes Tippett the 22nd coach in League history with 500 victories.

2017: Roberto Luongo becomes the second goalie in NHL history to win 200 games with two teams when the Florida Panthers defeat the New Jersey Devils 3-2 at Prudential Center. Luongo makes 23 saves in his 200th win with the Panthers to go along with his 252 wins with the Vancouver Canucks. He joins Patrick Roy, who has 289 wins with the Canadiens and 262 with the Colorado Avalanche.

2018: The Buffalo Sabres tie a team record with their 10th consecutive victory, a 3-2 overtime win against the San Jose Sharks at KeyBank Center. Jeff Skinner scores his 18th goal in 18 games at 1:41 of OT for the win. The 10 straight wins match the team record set from Jan. 4-23, 1984 and equaled from Oct. 4-26, 1986.

{coyotes} McDavid scores shootout winner, Oilers top Coyotes 4-3

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Fatigue set in for the Edmonton Oilers in the second game of a back-to-back as part of a five-game road trip.

However. the Oilers found a way to tie the score late in the third period and pick up two more key points with a shootout win.

Connor McDavid got the only goal of the tiebreaker, and the Pacific Division-leading Oilers beat the second-place Coyotes 4-3 Sunday night.

Mikko Koskinen stopped Vinnie Hinostroza on Arizona's last shootout attempt and finished with 27 saves. The Oilers got even for an overtime loss to Arizona at home earlier this month.

''This is a really big road trip for us,'' Koskinen said. ''We're never giving up, and when you believe in each other good things start to happen.''

James Neal, Alex Chiasson and Markus Granlund scored in regulation time for the Oilers, who have won three of four on their current road trip.

Hinostroza, Carl Soderberg and Christian Fischer scored for Arizona, which was also playing the second game of a back-to-back. Alex Goligoski had three assists and Darcy Kuemper stopped 34 shots.

Granlund tied the score at 3 when he collected a dropped catch from Kuemper of his own shot, and put in the rebound with 6:48 to play in regulation.

''That goal, you've got to take the body, can't watch the puck,'' Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet said. ''I thought we were doing well.''

The Oilers were more active around the net over the final minutes of the third period and overtime, but couldn't get another goal.

McDavid extended his point streak to 11 games with his 29th assist of the season, while Leon Draisatl got his NHL-leading 32nd.

The league's second-best power play entering the game struck quickly. After a too many men on the ice penalty against Arizona, McDavid slid a pass across the Coyotes zone to Draisatl, who found Neal alone near the goal for a tap-in at 2:05 of the first period. It was Neal's 14th of the season and gave him 21 points and 12 career goals against the Coyotes.

Arizona tied it at 9:43 of the period, with 4 seconds left on a power play. Nick Schmaltz sent a pass to Soderberg, whose long wrist shot zoomed past Koskinen for his seventh goal of the season.

Arizona had a chance to go in front before the first period ended, but Michael Grabner just missed a chance when Koskinen pushed the puck off the post just as it was about to get past him.

Edmonton scored another quick goal to start the second period, Chiasson putting in a pass from Sam Gagner from behind the net.

Gagner replaced injured second-line center Ryan Nugent-Hopkins after being scratched the previous three games.

''(Gagner) comes in and gives us a lot of energy. That's what you need in this league, for guys to step up at different times,'' Chiasson said.

Arizona tied it at 2 on Fischer's goal off a pass from Grabner behind the net at 11:52. Fischer wriggled away from being tangled up with McDavid along the boards and skated back into the play to collect the pass and score.

''That's a team we're chasing, and to give them a point when we have control, it stinks,'' Fischer said.

Less than two minutes later, Hinostroza scored on a slap shot from the side that appeared to take a deflection in front of the net. Goligoski got his third assist of the game on the play.

''We didn't have much gas in the tank, you could tell,'' Oilers coach Dave Tippett said. ''Tough turnaround, so I'm proud of my guys for hanging around. It's a good two days for us.''

NOTES: The game marked the return of former longtime Coyotes-now-Oilers head coach Dave Tippett to Arizona. The Coyotes parted ways with Tippett after the 2016-2017 season, and after serving as am adviser for the NHL expansion team coming to Seattle, he was hired by Oilers. The Coyotes played a video tribute to Tippett, who waved in appreciation. ... Oilers F Jujhar Khaira was scratched for the second straight game after hurting his hand blocking a shot against the Los Angeles Kings Thursday. Nugent-Hopkins (hand injury) was scratched just before the game, missing his first game of the season, and is expected to miss at least one more. ... Coyotes F Lawson Crouse was scratched after suffering a head injury Saturday night at Los Angeles.

{coyotes} Crouse scores, leaves with injury as Coyotes beat Kings

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Lawson Crouse scored the go-ahead goal before a scary fall that forced him to leave the game, and the Arizona Coyotes held on to beat the Los Angeles Kings 3-2 on Saturday.

Phil Kessel and Christian Fischer also scored for the Coyotes, who have won five of seven, including a 3-0 home victory over the Kings on Monday. Antti Raata made 43 saves for Arizona, which was outshot 45-18.

Anze Kopitar and Nikolai Prokhorkin scored for the Kings, whose five-game home winning streak ended. Jonathan Quick stopped 16 shots.

Crouse's goal off a rebound in the second period put Arizona ahead 2-1. He left the game in the third period after he fell and hit his head awkwardly into the boards. After being checked by a trainer, he was helped off the ice, and he walked to the locker room.

Kessel opened the scoring with a power-play goal in the first period. The Coyotes got through the neutral zone quickly, and he scored on a give-and-go play, assisted by Keller and Derek Stepan.

Kopitar tied it at 1-1 in the second period on the power play, his team-best ninth goal of the season.

Crouse scored at 15:29 of the second period and 27 seconds later, Clayton Keller was whistled for a hooking penalty. But the Kings came up empty on that power-play opportunity.

Fischer's empty-netter made it 3-1 with 2:10 left in the game, but Prokhorkin responded quickly with the game's final goal.

NOTES

{coyotes} Barrie, Engvall lead Maple Leafs to 3-1 win over Coyotes

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Tyson Barrie and rookie Pierre Engvall came through to help new Toronto Maple Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe get a win in his NHL coaching debut.

Barrie scored his first goal of the season, Engvall got the first of his career and the Maple Leafs snapped a six-game losing streak with a 3-1 win over the Arizona Coyotes on Thursday night.

''Pretty special night for a lot of guys here,'' said Toronto's Auston Matthews, who also scored back in his hometown. ''And a big two points with everything that's been going on the past couple of weeks and the past 36 hours.''

Frederik Andersen stopped 30 shots to help the Maple Leafs end an 0-5-1 skid one day after Keefe replaced the fired Mike Babcock.

''The guys went out and played with confidence,'' Keefe said. ''We had to find our way through the first period. I thought we had really good energy on the bench.''

Not everything was perfect in his first game behind the bench in the NHL, though.

''I was a little behind on making my line changes,'' said Keefe, who was in his fifth season as coach of the AHL's Toronto Marlies when he was promoted. ''I'd like to speed that up a bit. But the players took care of me well there.''

Some Maple Leafs players saw the coaching change as a chance for a new start.

''He came in with a really fresh attitude,'' Barrie said. ''We know we weren't meeting expectations and we need to be better.''

Vinnie Hinostraza scored with 17 seconds left for Arizona to spoil Andersen's shutout bid. Darcy Kuemper finished with 29 saves. The Coyotes had won four of their previous five games.

''Too many mistakes and we didn't really defend good enough,'' Arizona's Oliver Ekman-Larsson said.

Barrie got the scoring started with 46 seconds left in the first period, beating Kuemper under the right glove after coming down the right side from the point with open ice.

''I think I did a good job jumping in on the pass and that's what I'm accustomed to,'' Barrie said.

The Coyotes had trouble generating offense, as the Maple Leafs dominated the puck. Andersen was forced to make a glove save midway through the first on Carl Soderberg, and made a clean save of Jason Demers' shot on a break in the second off a feed from Phil Kessel.

Engvall scored short-handed after breaking up a point-to-point pass and beating Kuemper under his left leg with his left-handed shot with 3:11 remaining in the second.

Matthews made it 3-0 as he skated far side and beat Kuemper between the legs 48 seconds into the third period.

''With everything that (Keefe) threw at us in a short period of time that he'd like to see I thought we executed that for the most part,'' Matthews said.
