{coyotes} Hall calls pause 'a variable' as possible free agent with Coyotes

Amazon: Everything From A to Z

Taylor Hall said he's happy to have hockey games to think about before he determines his NHL future as a possible free agent.

The 28-year old forward could have become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, but the pause in the NHL season due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus changed the usual timing of play and the offseason.

"It's a variable for sure, but I think you look around the world and there's people that are in much tougher spots than I am," Hall told Sportsnet in remarks published Saturday. "And it's completely out of my hands, so, whether I'm going to become a free agent or not, I think it's nice that there's hockey left to be played, and I can really just focus on that and then see what happens from there."

The NHL announced its 24-team Return to Play Plan on May 26, and it included the Coyotes, who were four points out of a Stanley Cup Playoff position when the season was paused March 12.

Arizona (33-29-8), with a .529 points percentage, would play the Nashville Predators (35-26-8, .565) in a best-of-5 Qualifying Round series, with the winner advancing to the playoffs in the Western Conference. Dates and sites for those games have not been announced.

"I think everyone's timeline's been thrown off," Hall said. "I just consider myself lucky that I play on one of the 24 teams that's going to have a chance to play for the Stanley Cup ... and we'll see what happens from there."

Hall played 35 games for Arizona after he was traded by the New Jersey Devils on Dec. 16. The seven-year contract with an average annual value of $6 million he signed with the Edmonton Oilers was set to expire June 30. Training camp to precede the restart will not begin before July 10.

"It's been an interesting year," Hall said from Toronto in an episode of "Hockey Central at Home." "I spent three months in New Jersey, I spent around three months in Arizona, and I've been in quarantine for almost three months. So it's been an interesting year.

"But certainly whenever anyone asks me about Arizona, I say the living was awesome, it's a great place to play as a person. The arena is a little bit far (in Glendale), that's maybe the only complaint that players would have, but we get treated well by the organization. I think everyone loves playing for our coaching staff and [it] really was a great experience. I wish we would have won more games, but overall it was awesome."

Hall scored 27 points (10 goals, 17 assists) with Arizona, eventually landing on a line with wing Conor Garland.

"We started playing together 6-7 games into my stint in Arizona and I found that he is a great player to play with," Hall said of the 24-year-old. "He plays with a lot of heart and a lot of passion and has a lot of skill. So, as a left winger, to have a guy on your right side like that was a lot of fun to play with."

Hall was voted the Hart Trophy winner as NHL MVP after he helped the Devils reach the playoffs in 2017-18, his only postseason in 10 NHL seasons and New Jersey's first berth since 2011-12.

The No. 1 pick in the 2010 NHL Draft by Edmonton, he scored 52 points (16 goals, 36 assists) in 65 games this season with New Jersey and Arizona, and has 563 points (218 goals, 345 assists) in 627 games with the Oilers, Devils and Coyotes.

Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet said earlier this month he felt Arizona had a good chance to keep Hall.

"I'm not saying he is going to sign here, but I definitely think we're a team he's very interested in staying with," Tocchet told the ESPN On Ice podcast.

"... You're talking about a guy who, before this, was going to make a ton of money. With this whole pandemic, like he told me, he doesn't want to go through another year trying to play on a one-year contract. He wants to get settled somewhere. So he's got a lot of different options that he's [got to] weigh."

{coyotes} 2020 NHL Draft Lottery procedure

Amazon: Everything From A to Z

The NHL on Tuesday announced the protocol for the 2020 NHL Draft Lottery, with its first phase held June 26.

The draft lottery will determine the first 15 picks in the 2020 NHL Draft based on 3-6 drawings over one or two phases. It will include the seven teams that did not qualify for the postseason, plus eight teams that lose in the Qualifying Round.

The First Phase of the draft lottery will be held June 26, prior to the Qualifying Round. It will consist of three drawings and include the seven teams that did not qualify for the postseason and eight placeholder positions.

The lottery odds for the seven non-qualifying teams were determined by their point percentage during the 2019-20 regular season, which was paused March 12 due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus and was ended Tuesday with the Return to Play Plan announcement.

The eight potential losing teams from the Qualifying Round will be represented in the First Phase of the draft lottery as unassigned picks.

The first drawing of the First Phase will set the team selecting No. 1 in the draft, the second drawing will set the team selecting No. 2, and the third drawing will set the team selecting No. 3.

If a team not in the bottom seven wins any of the first three drawings, a Second Phase will be conducted among the eight teams eliminated in the Qualifying Round. That would take place between the end of the Qualifying Round and the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

"Today's announcement by the NHL provides the Ottawa Senators with clarity and allows us to set our sights firmly on the [NHL Draft], one that we believe will be the most transformational in our clubs history," Ottawa owner Eugene Melnyk said. " We are well positioned to select some of the most exciting young players in what is widely perceived to be one of the deepest drafts in years.

"For hockey fans, to Ottawa Senators are pleased the NHL has a firm plan for the return of hockey and that the Stanley Cup may be raised this year."

The odds for the first lottery drawing are as follows (bottom-seven teams' point percentage in parentheses):

Detroit Red Wings -- (.275) 18.5 percent chance for No. 1 pick

Ottawa Senators -- (.437) 13.5 percent

Ottawa Senators (from San Jose Sharks, .450) -- 11.5 percent

Los Angeles Kings -- (.457) 9.5 percent

Anaheim Ducks -- (.472) 8.5 percent

New Jersey Devils -- (.493) 7.5 percent

Buffalo Sabres -- (.493) 6.5 percent

Qualifying Round Team A -- 6.0 percent

Qualifying Round Team B -- 5.0 percent

Qualifying Round Team C -- 3.5 percent

Qualifying Round Team D -- 3.0 percent

Qualifying Round Team E -- 2.5 percent

Qualifying Round Team F -- 2.0 percent

Qualifying Round Team G -- 1.5 percent

Qualifying Round Team H -- 1.0 percent

New Jersey received better lottery odds than Buffalo because it had a worse regulation/overtime winning percentage (.348, compared to Buffalo's .406).

After the first drawing, the odds for the remaining teams will increase on a proportionate basis for the second drawing, and again for the third drawing, based on which team wins the second drawing.

"We're hoping, obviously, to find a difference-maker," Detroit general manager Steve Yzerman said in February. "And looking at that group that's there at the top, we think we'll get a real good player whether we're picking 1 or picking 4."

If each of the three First Phase drawings is won by a bottom-seven team, the Second Phase will not be necessary. The remaining four teams from the bottom seven will be assigned picks No. 4-7 in inverse order of their regular-season point percentage, and picks No. 8-15 will be assigned to the teams that are eliminated from the Qualifying Round in inverse order of their point percentage.

If a Qualifying Round losing team wins each of the top three picks, the bottom seven teams will be assigned picks No. 4-10 in inverse order of their point percentage.

If a Qualifying Round losing team wins one or two of the top three picks, any bottom-seven team not in the top three will be assigned their pick in inverse order of point percentage.

The number of drawings in the Second Phase would depend on how many picks in the First Phase are won by teams that lost in the Qualifying Round.

The odds for each losing team in the Qualifying Round for the first drawing of the Second Phase are 12.5 percent.

The point percentages for the 16 participants in the Qualifying Round (in inverse order, by tiebreaker):

Montreal Canadiens, .500

Chicago Blackhawks, .514

Arizona Coyotes, .529

Minnesota Wild, .558

Winnipeg Jets, .563

Calgary Flames, .564

New York Rangers, .564

Vancouver Canucks, .565

Nashville Predators, .565

Florida Panthers, .565

Columbus Blue Jackets, .579

Toronto Maple Leafs, .579

Edmonton Oilers, .585

New York Islanders, .588

Carolina Hurricanes, .596

Pittsburgh Penguins, .623

The top four teams in the Eastern and Western conferences -- Boston Bruins, Colorado Avalanche, Dallas Stars, Philadelphia Flyers, St. Louis Blues, Tampa Bay Lightning, Vegas Golden Knights and Washington Capitals -- will not participate in the draft lottery.

Forward Alexis Lafreniere is expected to be the No. 1 pick. Other top prospects include forward Tim Stuetzle, forward Quinton Byfield, defenseman Jamie Drysdale and defenseman Jake Sanderson.

{coyotes} Return to Play: Western Conference

Amazon: Everything From A to Z

The NHL announced its Return to Play Plan on Tuesday.

The League, which has been paused since March 12 due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus, will restart with the Stanley Cup Playoffs in two hub cities each hosting 12 teams from one conference.

The top four teams in the Eastern or Western Conference will play each other once (three games per team) in a round-robin to decide the top four seeds for the next round. Those games will be played with regular-season overtime and shootout rules, with ties in the final standings broken by regular-season points percentage. The four teams from the Western Conference are the St. Louis Blues, Colorado Avalanche, Vegas Golden Knights and Dallas Stars.

The other eight Western teams, seeded by point percentage, will play in four best-of-5 series in the Qualifying Round, with the winners advancing to play against the top four seeds in the First Round. These games will be played with playoff overtime rules.

Here those best-of-5 series matchups and breakdowns:

(5) Edmonton Oilers vs. (12) Chicago Blackhawks

Regular-season records

Oilers: 37-25-9, 83 points (.585 point percentage)
Blackhawks: 32-30-8, 72 points (.514)

Head-to-head

Chicago 2-1-0

Oct. 14: Blackhawks 3, Oilers 1, at CHI
Feb. 11: Oilers 5, Blackhawks 3, at EDM
March 5: Blackhawks 4, Oilers 3, at CHI

What's changed

Oilers: Defenseman Mike Green (knee) and forward Joakim Nygard (hand) could return to the lineup. Green, acquired in a trade from the Detroit Red Wings on Feb. 24, missed the last seven games before the season was paused, and Nygard the last 21.

Blackhawks: Chicago could have defenseman Calvin de Haan (shoulder) healthy when play resumes. He was expected to miss 4-5 months after having surgery Dec. 27. The status of forwards Andrew Shaw (concussion) and Zack Smith (hand) is less clear.

Analysis

The Oilers had their issues playing against the Blackhawks in the regular season, but their one win somewhat surprisingly came without center Connor McDavid in the lineup. Edmonton has the advantage, especially on special teams, where it was first in the NHL on the power play (29.5 percent) and second on the penalty kill (84.4 percent). The Oilers also have the top two scorers in the regular season, forward Leon Draisaitl (110 points) and McDavid (97 points).

(6) Nashville Predators vs. (11) Arizona Coyotes

Regular-season records

Predators: 35-26-8, 78 points (.565)
Coyotes: 33-29-8, 74 points (.529)

Head-to-head

Season series tied

Oct. 17: Coyotes 5, Predators 2, at ARI
Dec. 23: Predators 3, Coyotes 2, at NSH

What's changed

Predators: They were mostly healthy when the season was paused except for defenseman Dan Hamhuis, who missed the last four games with a lower-body injury.

Coyotes: Forward Conor Garland and defenseman Jakob Chychrun each is likely to return to the lineup from a lower-body injury. Each was week to week when the season was paused. Garland led the Coyotes with 22 goals in the regular season, and Chychrun had 26 points (12 goals, 14 assists) in 63 games.

Analysis

One of the interesting storylines will be Predators coach John Hynes going against Coyotes forward Taylor Hall, who won the Hart Trophy voted as NHL MVP with the New Jersey Devils in 2017-18, when Hynes was Devils coach. Another storyline will be the Predators' goalie situation because there was a changing of the guard before the season was paused, with Juuse Saros starting 14 of their last 18 games. Will Saros continue as the No. 1, or will Hynes go back to veteran Pekka Rinne? The Coyotes were trending in the wrong direction before the season was paused, going 8-13-4 in their last 25 games, but get a chance at a fresh start.

(7) Vancouver Canucks vs. (10) Minnesota Wild

Regular-season records

Canucks: 36-27-6, 78 points (.565)
Wild: 35-27-7, 77 points (.558)

Head-to-head

Minnesota 2-1-0

Jan. 12: Canucks 4, Wild 1, at MIN
Feb. 6: Wild 4, Canucks 2, at MIN
Feb. 19: Wild 4, Canucks 3 (SO), at VAN

What's changed

Canucks: Goalie Jacob Markstrom and forward Josh Leivo likely will be healthy. Markstrom (23-16-4, 2.75 goals-against average, .918 save percentage) was out with a knee injury when the season was paused. Leivo was recovering after fracturing his kneecap Dec. 19 against the Golden Knights. The injury was expected to keep him out 2-3 months.

Wild: Defenseman Carson Soucy is the only player who was injured, and he is expected to return. He missed the last nine games before the pause with an upper-body injury.

Analysis

Markstrom's return is the biggest advantage for the Canucks. He's in the final season of a three-year contract and can become an unrestricted free agent. A strong showing in this series could help him in contract negotiations. The Wild were coming together before the season was paused, going 12-5-1 in their last 18 games. Will Minnesota forward Kevin Fiala, who had 26 points (14 goals, 12 assists) in those 18 games, be able to pick up where he left off?

(8) Calgary Flames vs. (9) Winnipeg Jets

Regular-season records

Flames: 36-27-7, 79 points (.564)
Jets: 37-28-6, 80 points (.563)

Head-to-head

Winnipeg 1-0-0

Oct. 26: Jets 2, Flames 1 (OT), 2019 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic in Regina, Saskatchewan

What's changed

Flames: Defenseman Travis Hamonic, who missed the last 14 games before the season was paused with an upper-body injury, likely will be ready to return.

Jets: Forward Bryan Little could return. He last played Nov. 5 when he sustained a concussion and punctured eardrum against the Devils when he was hit in the head by teammate Nikolaj Ehlers' shot. Little played seven games this season but had five points (two goals, three assists), including the overtime goal in the Heritage Classic.

Analysis

The Jets have the advantage in net, and that should give them the advantage in the series. Connor Hellebuyck had a Vezina Trophy-caliber season, going 31-21-5 with a 2.57 GAA, a .922 save percentage and six shutouts. It will be interesting to see which goalie the Flames start. Do they go with David Rittich (24-17-6, 2.97 GAA, .907 save percentage) or Cam Talbot (12-10-1, 2.63 GAA, .919 save percentage)? Each started six of Calgary's last 12 games before the pause, but Talbot was thriving (2.42 GAA, .922 save percentage) and Rittich was struggling (3.71 GAA, .885 save percentage). The pause may even things out and elevate Rittich back to No. 1 goalie.

The NHL announced its Return to Play Plan on Tuesday.

The League, which has been paused since March 12 due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus, will restart with the Stanley Cup Playoffs in two hub cities each hosting 12 teams from one conference.

The top four teams in the Eastern or Western Conference will play each other once (three games per team) in a round-robin to decide the top four seeds for the first round of the playoffs. These games will be played with regular-season overtime and shootout rules, with ties in the final standings broken by regular-season points percentage. The other eight Eastern teams, seeded by point percentage, will play in four best-of-5 series in the Qualifying Round, with the winners advancing to play against the top four seeds. These games will be played with playoff overtime rules.

Here are those best-of-5 series matchups and breakdowns:

(5) Pittsburgh Penguins vs. (12) Montreal Canadiens

Regular-season records

Penguins: 40-23-6, 86 points (.623 point percentage)
Canadiens: 31-31-9, 71 points (.500)

Head-to-head

Pittsburgh 2-1-0

Dec. 10: Canadiens 4, Penguins 1, at PIT
Jan. 4: Penguins 3, Canadiens 2 (OT), at MTL
Feb. 14: Penguins 4, Canadiens 1, at PIT

What's changed

Penguins: Forward Jake Guentzel is expected to be in the lineup after recovering from shoulder surgery he had Dec. 31 that was supposed to keep him out 4-6 months. He led the Penguins with 20 goals and 43 points when he was injured against the Ottawa Senators on Dec. 30.

Canadiens: Defenseman Victor Mete (broken foot) and forwards Jonathan Drouin (ankle) and Tomas Tatar (upper body) all likely will be in the lineup. Each was out with an injury when the NHL paused the season.

Analysis

The Penguins should have a healthy and deep lineup, making them the clear favorite, but the biggest decision will come down to who starts in goal, Matt Murray (20-11-5, 2.87 goals-against average, .899 save percentage) or Tristan Jarry (20-12-1, 2.43 GAA, .921 save percentage)? If the Canadiens are going to pull off the upset, it will likely be goalie Carey Price (27-25-6, 2.79 GAA, .909 save percentage) leading the way. He is widely respected for his ability to get in the heads of his opponents and steal games.

(6) Carolina Hurricanes vs. (11) New York Rangers

Hurricanes: 38-25-5, 81 points (.596)
Rangers: 37-28-5, 79 points (.564)

Head-to-head

New York 4-0-0

Nov. 7: Rangers 4, Hurricanes 2, at CAR
Nov. 27: Rangers 3, Hurricanes 2, at NYR
Dec. 27: Rangers 5, Hurricanes 3, at NYR
Feb. 21: Rangers 5, Hurricanes 2, at CAR

What's changed

Hurricanes: Goalie James Reimer and defensemen Dougie Hamilton and Sami Vatanen should be available. Hamilton hasn't played since Jan. 16 because of a fractured left fibula. He was fourth among NHL defensemen with 40 points (14 goals, 26 assists) when he sustained the injury. Vatanen, who had a lower-body injury when the Hurricanes acquired him from the New Jersey Devils on Feb. 24, hasn't played yet for Carolina. Reimer has been out since Feb. 22 with a lower-body injury.

Rangers: Forward Chris Kreider (fractured foot) will be available. Kreider, who missed the last six games before the season was paused, had 45 points (24 goals, 21 assists) in 63 games.

Analysis

This looks like a lopsided matchup with the Rangers 31-6-0 against the Hurricanes since Feb. 22, 2011. However, Carolina is stronger at defenseman than it was going into the pause with Hamilton and Vatanen expected back, and Brady Skjei in the mix after being acquired in a trade from the Rangers on Feb. 24. Each team will have a decision to make for starting goalie (Igor Shesterkin, Alexandar Georgiev or Henrik Lundqvist for New York; Petr Mrazek or Reimer for Carolina).

(7) New York Islanders vs. (10) Florida Panthers

Regular-season record

Islanders: 35-23-10, 80 points (.588)
Panthers: 35-26-8, 78 points (.565)

Head-to-head

New York 3-0-0

Oct. 12: Islanders 3, Panthers 2 (SO), at NYI
Nov. 9: Islanders 2, Panthers 1, at NYI
Dec. 12: Islanders 3, Panthers 1, at FLA

What's changed

Islanders: Center Casey Cizikas and defenseman Johnny Boychuk will be healthy when play resumes. Cizikas missed the last 13 games before the season was paused with a lacerated leg, and Boychuk missed the last three because of a facial injury.

Panthers: Goalie Sergei Bobrovsky will be available after missing the last four games before the pause because of a lower-body injury. Forward Brian Boyle, who missed the last 19 games with an upper-body injury, also is expected to be ready.

Analysis

There's an argument to be made that the Islanders and Panthers each underachieved this season, but this five-game series presents an opportunity to change opinions. The Islanders will be deeper down the middle with the return of Cizikas. The difference could be Bobrovsky, who has been disappointing in the first of his seven-year contract with the Panthers (23-19-6, 3.23 GAA, .900 save percentage). This series represents a chance for him to turn around his season.

(8) Toronto Maple Leafs (9) Columbus Blue Jackets

Regular-season records

Maple Leafs: 36-25-9, 81 points (.579)
Blue Jackets: 33-22-15, 81 points (.579)

Head-to-head

Toronto 1-0-1

Oct. 4: Maple Leafs 4, Blue Jackets 1, at CBJ
Oct. 21: Blue Jackets 4, Maple Leafs 3 (OT), at TOR

What's changed

Maple Leafs: Defenseman Jake Muzzin (broken hand) and forwards Andreas Johnsson (knee) and Ilya Mikheyev (wrist laceration) all likely will be in the lineup. Muzzin missed the last six games before the season was paused, Johnsson the last 12, and Mikheyev the last 31.

Blue Jackets: Defenseman Seth Jones and forward Oliver Bjorkstrand each will be in the lineup after fracturing his ankle in February. The Blue Jackets were 3-5-6 without Jones and 3-3-2 without Bjorkstrand. Defenseman Dean Kukan (knee) and forwards Cam Atkinson (ankle), Alexandre Texier (back), and Nathan Gerbe (groin) likely will be ready to return as well.

Analysis

The Blue Jackets are a different team with Jones in the lineup. He's their top defenseman who plays in all situations and partners with Zach Werenski for one of the most formidable defense pairs in the NHL. The Maple Leafs counter by getting Muzzin back. He's the most experienced defenseman and one of two Stanley Cup champions in the series (Toronto forward Kyle Clifford). This series is a tale of differing styles. Columbus was tied for third in the NHL in goals-against per game (2.61); Toronto was third in goals per game (3.39).

{coyotes} NHL plans to return with 24-team Stanley Cup Playoffs

Amazon: Everything From A to Z

The NHL announced its Return to Play Plan on Tuesday with 24 teams in competition for the Stanley Cup.

The tournament will begin with a 16-team, eight-series Qualifying Round and a Seeding Round Robin among the top four teams in each conference to determine seeds for the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The NHL paused the regular season March 12 due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus and its remaining 189 games will not be completed. The 12 qualifying teams from the Eastern and Western conferences were determined by points percentage as of that date. Seven teams did not qualify.

"I want to make clear that the health and safety of our players, coaches, essential support staff and our communities are paramount," Commissioner Gary Bettman said in announcing the Return to Play Plan. "While nothing is without risk, ensuring health and safety has been central to all of our planning so far and will remain so.

"Let me assure you that the reason we are doing this is because our fans have told us in overwhelming numbers that they want to complete the season if at all possible. And our players and our teams are clear that they want to play and bring the season to its rightful conclusion."

The format was determined in meetings of the Return to Play Committee, which included executives from the NHL and NHL Players' Association, and five players: Ottawa Senators defenseman Ron Hainsey, Edmonton Oilers center Connor McDavid, Winnipeg Jets center Mark Scheifele, Toronto Maple Leafs center John Tavares and Philadelphia Flyers forward James van Riemsdyk.

The objective was to find a way to award the Stanley Cup this season.

"I certainly hope that we can. I certainly hope that is the case," NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr told NBCSN. "I certainly hope that all the necessary agreements, health and safety, and economic, and the rest can be finalized, so that they can take place. But I hope it is for another reason, because if we can, that would suggest that the world is beginning to return a little bit towards normal, and that's something that everybody wants and is in everybody's interest, and we can't forget that."

The Qualifying Round and Seeding Round Robin will be held at two hub cities to be identified -- one for the 12 participating Eastern Conference teams and one for the 12 Western Conference teams - and begin at a date to be determined. Candidates for the hub cities include Chicago, Columbus, Dallas, Edmonton, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Pittsburgh, Toronto and Vancouver.

The Commissioner said the decision on the hub cities and when play will begin will depend on COVID-19 conditions, testing ability and government regulations. A comprehensive system for testing will be in place in each hub city, and each team will be permitted to travel a maximum of 50 personnel, including players, coaches and staff.

"Obviously, we anticipate playing over the summer and into the early fall," Commissioner Bettman said. "At this time, we are not fixing dates because the schedule of our return to play will be determined both by developing circumstances and the needs of the players."

In the Eastern Conference, the Boston Bruins (44-14-12, 100 points), Tampa Bay Lightning (43-21-6, 92 points), Washington Capitals (41-20-8, 90 points) and Philadelphia Flyers (41-21-7, 89 points) will each have a bye and play each other once to determine the order of the top four seeds for the first round of the playoffs.

The Eastern Conference Qualifying Round will have four best-of-5 series: the Pittsburgh Penguins (40-23-6, 86 points) vs. the Montreal Canadiens (31-31-9, 71 points); the Carolina Hurricanes (38-25-5, 81 points) vs. the New York Rangers (37-28-5, 79 points); the New York Islanders (35-23-10, 80 points) vs. the Florida Panthers (35-26-8, 78 points); and the Toronto Maple Leafs (36-25-9, 81 points) vs. the Columbus Blue Jackets (33-22-15, 81 points).

In the Western Conference, the St. Louis Blues (42-19-10, 94 points), Colorado Avalanche (42-20-8, 92 points), Vegas Golden Knights (39-24-8, 86 points) and Dallas Stars (37-24-8, 82 points) will each have a bye and play round-robin to determine their seeding order.

The Western Conference best-of-5 qualifying round series are: the Edmonton Oilers (37-25-9, 83 points) vs. the Chicago Blackhawks (32-30-8, 72 points); the Nashville Predators (35-26-8, 78 points) vs. the Arizona Coyotes (33-29-8, 74 points); the Vancouver Canucks (36-27-6, 78 points) vs. the Minnesota Wild (35-27-7, 77 points); and the Calgary Flames (36-27-7, 79 points) vs. the Winnipeg Jets (37-28-6, 80 points).

Seven teams did not qualify for the postseason and their season is over: the Buffalo Sabres, New Jersey Devils, Anaheim Ducks, Los Angeles Kings, San Jose Sharks, Ottawa Senators and Detroit Red Wings. Each of them will participate in the NHL Draft Lottery, which will hold its first phase June 26.

Games in the qualifying round will be played with playoff overtime rules. The round-robin games will be played with regular-season overtime and shootout rules with ties in the standings broken by regular-season points percentage.

After the round-robins and the qualifying round, the conference-based playoffs will be continue in the two hub cities. Each of the winners of the qualifying round will advance to face one of the round-robin teams in the first round. The Return to Play Committee is discussing whether those first-round series will be set through seeding or by bracket.

The Return to Play Committee also has yet to decide the length of the first-round and second-round series, and whether the second-round series will be determined through seeding or by bracket.

The conference finals and Stanley Cup Final will each be a best-of-7 series. Commissioner Bettman told NBCSN there is a slim possibility the final three series can be played in the home arenas of the teams that reach those rounds, but that would require a substantial change in the outlook of the pandemic. It's most likely all games will be played in the hub cities without fans in attendance.

"It depends on what the world looks like," the Commissioner said. "If you made me guess today, I think we'll be in one of the two hub cities or conceivably a third city. But if things change dramatically and we have the ability to go back to the home markets, (the League will). We anticipate playing this without fans, but if at some point things change, then obviously we'd reevaluate."

The Commissioner told NBCSN that it's not required that the Eastern Conference teams have to play in an Eastern hub city and the Western Conference teams have to play in a Western hub city.

The two hub cities that are selected will depend on the circumstances in that city. For example, though Edmonton, Toronto and Vancouver are among the cities being considered, the current edict in Canada requiring those who enter the country to be quarantined for 14 days would probably preclude one of those cities from being selected.

"We are talking to the Canadian government about it, but if we get done with training camp and we want to go to a Canadian city and to do that we have to quarantine for another 14 days, that isn't going to work," Commissioner Bettman said.

Training camps could open in mid-July as part of Phase 3 of the Return to Play Plan, and Commissioner Bettman said the NHL believes the qualifying and first two rounds of the playoffs can be completed in a little more than a month.

"Obviously, these are extraordinary and unprecedented times," he said. "Any plan for the resumption of play, by definition, cannot be perfect. And I am certain that, depending on which team you root for or which team you cover, you can find some element of this package that you might prefer to be done differently.

"But we believe we have constructed an overall plan that includes all teams that, as a practical matter, might have had a chance of qualifying for the playoffs when the season was paused. And this plan will produce a worthy Stanley Cup champion who will have run the postseason gauntlet that is unique to the NHL."

{coyotes} NHL plans move to small-group training as Phase 2 of return

Amazon: Everything From A to Z

TORONTO (AP) -- The NHL hopes to have players back in team facilities soon -- with plenty of precautions.

The league, which paused its season on March 12 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, released a memo Monday saying it is targeting early next month as the start date for Phase 2 of its return-to-play protocol, including the opening of practice rinks and allowing small, voluntary group workouts on and off the ice.

''It has not yet been determined when precisely Phase 2 will start or how long it may last,'' the said read. ''We are continuing to monitor developments in each of the club's markets, and may adjust the overall timing if appropriate, following discussion with all relevant parties.''

The NHL, which has worked closely with the NHL Players' Association on the phased approach, said that while it views the protocol as ''very comprehensive ... (it) cannot mitigate all risk.''

''A range of clinical scenarios exist, from very mild to fatal outcome,'' the 22-page memo continued. ''COVID-19 generally affects older age groups and those with previously existing medical conditions, more so than younger, and otherwise healthy, individuals.

''We recognize that players and personnel have family and household members who may fall into these vulnerable categories.''

If the Phase 2 plan gets the green light, on-ice sessions will be noncontact and involve up to six players, who will be expected to maintain physical distancing at all times. Players will be required to wear masks when entering and exiting facilities, and when not able to physically distance.

''Players are not required to wear face coverings when they are exercising or on the ice,'' the memo said.

Teams are not allowed to require a player to return to a club's home city to complete any necessary quarantine measures before the workouts begin. Coaches and management will be allowed to watch, but not participate in, the informal skates.

The final two phases of the return-to-play protocol -- training camps followed by a resumption of game action -- were not mentioned in the memo. Phase 1, which continues after a number of extensions, saw players advised to self-quarantine after the novel coronavirus paused most of the sports world some 10 weeks ago.

The NHL/NHLPA Return to Play Committee has been hashing out details of what the game will look like if it's allowed to return this summer. The union's executive board approved further negotiations on a 24-team format Friday.

The Phase 2 memo made public Monday also states players and staff will be administered COVID-19 nasal swab tests two days before training begins and will be tested twice a week afterward. They must perform daily self-administered temperature and symptom checks at home before heading to their team's facility.

Clubs must also administer ''a separate temperature and symptom check at the entrance of the club facility.''

Players who live in NHL markets other than where they play will be permitted to use local facilities, pending availability, meaning they won't have to travel back to their team's home cities for Phase 2.

Most NHL players have not been on the ice since the league halted its schedule, although some, including a number of Swedish players who returned home, have been skating in recent weeks.

The league said any player or staff member who develops COVID-19 symptoms during Phase 2, including cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, fever/chills, muscle pain (not exercise-related), loss of smell or taste, cold-like symptoms or gastrointestinal symptoms, are expected to notify medical officials immediately and self-isolate.

If a COVID-19 test comes back positive, the player/staff member's team will conduct contract tracing in conjunction with local health regulations.

Apart from laying out the groundwork for Phase 2 and continuing discussions on the 24-team format, plenty of other hurdles remain before the games will be allowed to resume.

Should the NHL return sometime this summer, it's almost certain teams will be clustered in hub cities across North America -- Vancouver, Edmonton, Toronto and Las Vegas are believed to be in the mix -- with games being held in empty arenas.

The Stanley Cup has been awarded every year since 1893, save for 1919 because of the Spanish flu outbreak, and 2005 when a lockout led to the cancellation of the entire season.

{coyotes} Coyotes will be in mix to re-sign Hall, Tocchet says

Amazon: Everything From A to Z

Rick Tocchet said he's confident the Arizona Coyotes will be in the mix to sign Taylor Hall after this season.

"I'm not saying he is going to sign here, but I definitely think we're a team he's very interested in staying with," Tocchet told the ESPN On Ice podcast.

Hall has 27 points (10 goals, 17 assists) in 35 games for the Coyotes this season. The 28-year-old forward was traded by the New Jersey Devils to the Coyotes on Dec. 16 and can become an unrestricted free agent after the season, which was paused March 12 due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus. He has 52 points (16 goals, 36 assists) between Arizona and New Jersey.

"You're talking about a guy who, before this, was going to make a ton of money," Tocchet said. "With this whole pandemic, like he told me, he doesn't want to go through another year trying to play on a one-year contract. He wants to get settled somewhere. So he's got a lot of different options that he's gotta weigh."

Hall said shortly after the season was paused that he is focused on getting back to playing and making the Stanley Cup Playoffs, not his next contract. The Coyotes (33-29-8) trail the Nashville Predators and Vancouver Canucks by four points for the second wild card in the Western Conference. They were 3-5-0 in their final eight games before the pause and were scheduled to begin a five-game homestand against the Canucks.

"It is definitely a weird time to possibly be a free agent, but there's so much uncertainty throughout the League ... throughout the world, really," Hall told Sportsnet. "So I'm not as worried about free agency as I am about getting back to hockey and hoping that we can somehow get into the playoffs. I think everyone just wants some normalcy back in their lives."

Hall scored 44 points (21 goals, 23 assists) in the final 32 games in 2017-18 helping the Devils to their first postseason berth since 2012 and earning him the Hart Trophy voted as NHL MVP. The No. 1 pick at the 2011 NHL Draft by the Edmonton Oilers, he has 563 points (218 goals, 345 assists) in 627 games with the Oilers, Devils and Coyotes.

"He's an elite player," Arizona general manager John Chayka said. "He's a star player most nights, if not every night. He generates a lot for himself, his teammates. He's a guy that plays in the guts of the game. He's been a terrific addition for us, and like we talked about, we hope to have him long term as well."

Hi Rick,
thanks for your great log! As I was at Pinal Air Park in oct. 2006 for the last time I'm looking for a log around that time. Do you eventually have such a log or know someone who has one or an idea where I could find one? Any help is very welcome. MTIA and greetings from Germany.

8am came, and N1408F Cessna 172H was checked, and off we went. After
an overflight of Davis Monthan, we continued up to Pinal Air Park,
where we did a couple of circuits following by a landing, taxi down
the ramp, and take off.

Many thanks to Dave Anderson for his excellent log on the Teesside

A log of the reg's have come from photos taken. Brackets indicate ones
not read off and taken from Dave's log (apologies to my fellow flyer
John, not checked his photos yet).
