Insider for the Arizona Coyotes Craig Morgan reported on Sunday that Niklas Hjalmarsson, three-time Stanley Cup champion with the Blackhawks, has retired at age 34.
Per source, Coyotes UFA D Niklas Hjalmarsson is retiring. I don't expect a formal announcement or statement from Nik. Those who have covered him or known him know that is not his style.
He was an integral part of 3 Stanley Cups in Chicago and the consummate pro on/off the ice. pic.twitter.com/b3GUVwGWa9— Craig Morgan (@CraigSMorgan) July 25, 2021
Drafted to the Hawks in 2005, Hjalmarsson made his NHL debut is 2006, and was an integral part of the team's defense and overall core for 10 years before he was dealt to Arizona after the 2016-17 season in exchange for Connor Murphy and Laurent Dauphin.
The Swedish-born shot blocker is one of seven Blackhawks with his name etched into the Stanley Cup three times (2010, 2013 and 2015), making him one of the greatest defensemen in franchise history and a member of NBC Sports Chicago's All-Decade team.
The "Hammer" also earned an Olympic silver medal for Team Sweden in 2014.
