{coyotes} Coyotes aiming to take step forward in franchise rebuild

FILE - In this July 1, 2021, file photo, Arizona Coyotes new head coach Andre Tourigny speaks during an NHL hockey news conference at Gila River Arena in Glendale, Ariz. The Coyotes are in their second year of rebuilding under Tourigny after finishing with the NHL's second-worst record a year ago. (AP Photo/Ross D. Franklin, File)

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — The Arizona Coyotes predictably labored during the first season of their rebuilding project, finishing near the bottom of the NHL standings.

The focus of the second year will be about making progress, no matter how incremental.

"I told the team, the odds are stacked against us," Coyotes general manager Bill Armstrong said. "The media, the league think we're going to take a step back and that's not the case. We've got to take a step forward."

Arizona overhauled its roster in coach André Tourigny's first season, trading away most of its top players and all three goalies to stockpile future draft picks.

The Coyotes labored on the ice, finishing with 57 points, second-worst in the NHL to Montreal's 55.

Arizona made no significant additions to its roster this year, adding a few veterans who can add grit and experience to a young lineup.

The core of last year's team is back, led by forwards Clayton Keller, Nick Schmaltz and Christian Fischer, defensemen Jakob Chychrun and Shayne Gostibehere, and goalie Karel Vejmelka.

None of the Coyotes' three first-round draft picks will be ready to contribute right away, so it will be up to those core players to keep the Coyotes competitive.

It won't be easy.

Because they're sharing the new Mullett Arena with Arizona State's hockey team, the Coyotes won't play their first home game until Oct. 28 and 20 of their first 24 games are on the road

"If you look at the big picture, that will be a challenge," Tourigny said. "The only thing you can control is today, and it's always the way I approach it."

THE MULLET

The Coyotes were forced to search for a new home when the city of Glendale opted to not renew the annual lease for Gila River Arena, where they had played since 2003.

They found a temporary fix in what will be the league's most unique home environment.

The Coyotes reached a deal to play the next three seasons at Arizona State's Mullett Arena, which has a 5,000-seat capacity — by far the smallest in in the NHL.

"I think it's going to be a great atmosphere," Keller said. "Obviously, smaller building, but hopefully the fans are really engaged and, you know, it's like a new chapter of hockey in Arizona.

CHYCHRUN'S RETURN

Chychrun will be back for his seventh season manning the blue line in the desert.

It may not last long.

The Coyotes approached the 24-year-old about a possible trade to a playoff contender while the franchise goes through its rebuild.

After deliberating with his family, Chychrun decided to take the team up on its offer.

"It's kind of a mutual position for me to get moved on to a situation with a chance to win and a team that's fighting for the Stanley Cup and for them here to be able to get assets," he said. "I understand how rebuilds work. I think it could be mutually beneficial."

Chychrun has been one of Arizona's anchors, a top-line defenseman who has become a leader in the locker room. He was not ready for the start of training camp while recovering from offseason wrist and ankle surgeries.

KELLER'S RISE

Keller is coming off the best of his six NHL seasons.

The 5-foot-10, 178-pound forward had a career-high 28 goals and added 35 assists last season before breaking his leg late in the season.

Keller has been cleared medically, but the team is being cautious with his return and he's expecting to play in the season opener Oct. 13 at Pittsburgh.

"That's been everything I've been working for this entire summer is to get back for that game, and I'll be ready for it and treat it like any other game and have fun," he said.

VEGGIE TIME

Vejmelka will start his second season as Arizona's No. 1 goalie and may have an even heavier workload as the goalies in the team's pipeline gain more experience.

The 26-year-old had some good moments last season despite an occasionally shaky defense in front of him, finishing second among NHL rookies with 52 games and 49 starts. He finished 13-32 with a 3.68 goals-against average.

The Boston Bruins appear to be bringing veteran Anton Stralman into training camp.

TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun reports Stralman is set to sign a professional tryout with Boston.

The 36-year-old defenceman posted eight goals and 23 points in 74 games with the Arizona Coyotes last season. He reached free agency in July after completing a three-year, $16.5 million contract ($5.5 million AAV) signed with the Florida Panthers in 2019.

A seventh-round pick of the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2005 draft, Stralman has 63 goals and 293 points in 930 career games. He has spent time with the Maple Leafs, Columbus Blue Jackets, New York Rangers, Tampa Bay Lightning, Panthers and Coyotes.

{coyotes} Coyotes’ Chychrun looking for trade to playoff contender

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Arizona Coyotes defenseman Jakob Chychrun still wants to be traded to a playoff contender. He's not going to let that impact how he plays while he's still in the desert.

"I've been here a while now and the way I operate and take care of my business, I try to get better every day," Chychrun said Wednesday, a day before the Coyotes start training camp. "All I'm going to focus on is continuing to get better, get healthy — that's obviously the biggest thing right now."

Chychrun will not be ready for the start of training camp and possibly preseason games after having wrist and ankle surgery in the offseason. He will play for the Coyotes once he is healthy, but the team will likely move him to a contender at some point.

The Coyotes are in year 2 of a rebuild that started with trading away veteran players for draft picks before that season. Arizona finished with the second-fewest points in the NHL last season and is expected to be near the bottom again this year.

The team approached Chychrun about a possible trade to a contender before last season and again early in the season, but the Coyotes could not find a suitable deal for one of their best players.

"Throughout the start of last season, I had a lot of reflection time and some really, really emotional, hard reflections with my loved ones and family," he said "We ultimately decided to take them up on that offer and try to get moved on to a better situation."

The 24-year-old Chychrun has been one of the anchors of Arizona's team, both as a top-line defenseman and a leader in the locker room. The 6-foot-2, 220-pound defenseman is a physical presence at the blue line and a capable scorer, eclipsing 20 points five times in his six NHL seasons.

"It's kind of a mutual position for me to get moved on to a situation with a chance to win and a team that's fighting for the Stanley Cup and for them here to be able to get assets," Chychrun said. "I understand how rebuilds work. I think it could be mutually beneficial."

{coyotes} Yandle retires from NHL, holds consecutive games played record at 989

Keith Yandle, who set the NHL record for consecutive games played last season, announced his retirement Tuesday after 16 seasons.

"The last year it's one of those things I've been thinking about," Yandle said on the "Spittin' Chiclets" podcast. "When that's all you know in your life, to call it quits on it, to call it an end, it's nerve-wracking. You're worried about what you're going to do. Especially this time of the year, you're ramping up for training camp.

"The last couple weeks, I've been at ease with it. Really enjoyed spending time with the family. ... I think for me, I'm really at ease with it and looking forward to the next chapter."

His games played streak reached 989 games. It ended when he was scratched oileragainst the Toronto Maple Leafs on April 2.

"My only hope is that he just recognizes how amazing it is what he's done," Flyers coach Mike Yeo said that day. "For sure, for him it's disappointing, no question. But not many can say they've done something that nobody in the history of the NHL has ever done. And so in no way does this diminish what he's accomplished. It is remarkable and certainly something to be extremely proud of."

The 36-year-old defenseman had 19 points (one goal, 18 assists) in 77 games with the Philadelphia Flyers last season.

Yandle said he spoke to a number of his former teammates for advice on making his decision, among them Rick Nash, Shane Doan and Roberto Luongo.

"Seems like guys nowadays are really at ease with it," Yandle said. "We've been lucky enough to make enough money that we're not too worried about it that much. I think … the mental aspect of it, finding your way in life and what you're going to do. For me, it's focusing on the next chapter, being a good family guy. I think the majority of things guys have told me is once you know, your body tells you it's time to shut it down, the time has come. For me, this summer I had no interest in working out. This is it, it's not worth fighting for, trying to grind it out another year. I'm more at ease."

Yandle played his record 965th consecutive game at the New York Islanders on Jan. 25. Doug Jarvis held the record of 964 straight.

"It's a love for the game and having fun," Yandle said then. "At the end of the day, we're playing a game that we all dreamt of playing growing up."

Vegas Golden Knights forward Phil Kessel is second to Yandle with 982 consecutive games played.

Selected by the Phoenix Coyotes in the fourth round (No. 105) of the 2005 NHL Draft, Yandle had 619 points (103 goals, 516 assists) in 1,109 games with the Coyotes, New York Rangers, Florida Panters and Flyers. He also had 36 points (six goals, 30 assists) in 58 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

He had signed a one-year, $900,000 contract with the Flyers on July 28, 2021, two weeks after the Panthers bought out the final two seasons of his seven-year contract.

Yandle scored at least 10 goals in a season four times and played in the NHL All-Star Game three times (2011, 2012, 2019). As much as he accomplished on the ice, numerous teammates cited Yandle for his energy, work ethic and what he brought to the dressing room.

"He's one of the teammates you remember forever," Flyers forward Joel Farabee said. "I don't think there's enough good things to say about him. ... He's the most down to earth, nice guy that loves the game so much.

"Having the honor to play one season with him is something I'll remember. He's one of the best ever to do it and I wish him well with whatever happens in his post-career life."

Center Kevin Hayes, who played with Yandle in New York and Philadelphia, said, "He's one of my favorite teammates that I've ever played with. He's a grounded human who understands what hard work is and he's just a consistent human on and off the ice. You know exactly what you're going to get from him."

Also on Tuesday, defenseman Zdeno Chara, 45, announced he will sign a one-day contract with the Boston Bruins and retire after 24 seasons and defenseman P.K. Subban, 33, retired after 13 NHL seasons.

{coyotes} Coyotes re-sign Barrett Hayton to two-year contract

The Arizona Coyotes have re-signed RFA centre Barrett Hayton to a two-year contract, the team announced Tuesday. NHL Network's Craig Morgan reported that the contract was worth $3.55 million, carrying an AAV of $1.775 million.

"Barrett is a young, talented, hard-working player who made significant strides last year," Coyotes general manager Bill Armstrong said. "We're excited to have him on our roster for this season."

In 60 games with the Coyotes last season, Hayton amassed 10 goals for 24 points. Over 94 career NHL games, he has scored 13 goals and tallied 31 points.

Hayton, 22, was selected fifth-overall in the 2018 NHL Draft by the Arizona Coyotes and has since played three seasons split between the Coyotes and their AHL affiliate, the Tucson Roadrunners.

{coyotes} NHL's 'ironman' Yandle retires after 17 seasons

Veteran defenceman Keith Yandle has retired after 17 seasons in the NHL.

Yandle became the NHL's new ironman last season, when he played in his 989th consecutive game.

The 35-year-old scored one goal and had 19 points in 77 games with the Philadelphia Flyers during the 2021-22 campaign.

Drafted 105th overall by the Phoenix Coyotes in 2005, he spent the first nine years of his career in Arizona until he was traded to the New York Rangers in 2015. He played two seasons in New York before being traded to the Florida Panthers, where he spent five years before signing with Philadelphia last year.
