Veteran forward Nick Bjugstad has been traded from the Arizona Coyotes to the Edmonton Oilers.

The Oilers send AHL defenceman Michael Kesselring and a 2023 third-round pick to the Coyotes in the deal and Arizona retains 50 per cent of Bjugstad's salary (cap hit, $900,000).

The Oilers also get AHL defenceman Cam Dineen in the trade.

Bjugstad is in the midst of an improved season, with 13 goals and 23 points that put him on pace for the most points since the 2018-19 season.

The 33-year-old will provide the Oilers some bottom-six forward depth and is capable of playing both centre and on the wing. And with just a $900,000 cap hit for the remainder of the season, Bjugstad likely had plenty of suitors on the trade market.

This trade allows the deep-rebuilding Coyotes to retain another future asset, something they certainly had in mind when they signed Bjugstad as a free agent last year.
