The Arizona Coyotes are placing both Zack Kassian and Patrik Nemeth on unconditional waivers for the purpose of buying out their contracts.
Kassian and Nemeth had one year remaining on their contracts. Kassian would have counted $3.2 million against the cap while Nemeth had a cap hit of $2.5 million going into next season.
With the buyout, Kassian will now count for $1.67 million against the cap in 2023 and leave a cap charge of $766,667 for the 2024-25 season. Nemeth will count for just $166,667 against the cap this next season while leaving a charge of $1.17 million in 2024-25.
Arizona acquired Kassian at the 2022 NHL Draft in a trade with the Edmonton Oilers where they acquired the 29th overall pick, which was used to take Maveric Lamoureux, a second-round pick in 2025 and a third-round pick in 2024.
Kassian had spent seven seasons with the Oilers and four with the Vancouver Canucks before that.
The 32-year-old winger had two goals in 51 games for the Coyotes last season.
The New York Rangers sent Nemeth along with a 2025 second-round draft pick and a conditional 2026 second-round draft pick to the Coyotes in exchange for defenceman Ty Emberson last off-season.
Nemeth, 31, appeared in 75 games for Arizona and had five points.
